Hello. I've owned GOLDIE ( my gold and tan interior maliboo-boo) for over 14 years, and to the cars credit haven't been impressed with many new cars because of the inivations on this malibu in 2000. Try these standard features on my car with the cars of 2016 and see why it was way ahead of is time.... Engine small v-6 3.1 liter and still gets 25-26 mpg combined...that's right.. full size chevy heavy steel frame car that gets 26 mpg combined and its quick...My wife had a 3.6 liter pontiac GRAN AM with 210 hp and I beat her every time...go figure. I have carbon fiber on my dash..free no add on cost. One of the most powerful heater/AC systems I've every felt ( even over my FORD F250 work truck ) and very comfy seats even for my bad hip ( I'm 60 years old and crashed by cycle a few years back) Add full AUTO HEADLIGHTS, ENGINE HILL HOLDER EVEN IN SAN FRANSICO(impressive) and a simple engineand even self-adjusting brakes and a trunk you can almost fit a full size bike into( with the front wheel off) and you have a car that lead the way in many ways and even to this day and the paint even looks fresh as the day she came off the factory showroom too. The reason I'm writing this is because of my medical issues( Diabetic, eye sight, nerve issues) I can't really drive her any more and I'm donating her to a needy family nearby. If you find a CHEVY MALIBU just be aware that engine seals can be a issue with them and need to be replaced every few years...Hell it still has the factory stereo speakers in it and have gone thur 3 hi powered dash radios...She will be missed as the innovator of the GM lineup for the NEW CENTURY ...many imatators have come but no-one did it better...Good bye my fathful stead ...my you live on...but never forgotten . with your gentle seats and your powerful horses...A DEW...Jay Cobbs

It ain't stellar, but it delivers the goods

Would have given 3 1/2 stars rather than 4. My wife had been sinking all of her money into another car she had gotten before we got married and when the transmission went we finally junked it and looked for a new to us car. The 2000 Chevy Malibu LS was available in a corner used car lot and I went to check it out. Cons first: The styling is bland and the interior is all cheap plastic and fabric and the radio is crap. Pros next: The car started up right away and handled very well for a boring 4 door family sedan. There was a surprising amount of pep in the engine. The trunk holds more than expected and the the cheap interior is pretty roomy. My wife loved it and we bought it the next day. She drove that car for 4 1/2 years and put 50,000 miles on it on highways and potholed city streets. We had to fix the driver's power window, pull the remote lock when the Service Soon light came on, replace the serpentine belt, replace a melted tab that kept brake lights on, and changed the battery once. Other than that the car was only in the shop for inspection or oil changes. It handled snow just fine and we trusted it to carry our most precious cargo, our children. We finally needed a bigger car when the children grew, but it was still running when we sold it. Our old Chevy Malibu didn't owe us anything. It's an underrated car.

A solid car

I purchased my 2000 Malibu in 2003 with 60k miles. The owner was a senior citizen who had made lots of road trips and meticulously kept up with maintenance and had all receipts to prove it. I've now had my Malibu for 9 years and love it. I've had to do most of the expected routine maintenance - brakes, rotors, tires, filters. There's been a few pieces of non routine maintenance but overall this has been a great vehicle for me. I'm now at 162k and expect to take it to 200k+. When I'm done, I hope I can find a similar car - malibu from same era with meticulous records and low miles and likely non aggressive driving previous owner.

I bought this car brand new in 2000, and it has been a good car. As with all cars there's maintenance and repairs that need to be done, especially after driving it over 100K miles. It is still running good after 111K and I am confident it will go to 200K. The biggest issue with this car was the anti-theft system. At about 75K it became so sensitive that when I turned the key to start it, the system would turn on, and I would have to wait 5 minutes before it would start. I had the ignition switch replaced and never had the issue again. Also, the cruise control does not stay locked in, but don't use anyway so it's not a problem for me.

So far so good - just purchased with 200K on it

I read most of the reviews here and it almost made me back out of my decision to by a 2000 Malibu LS. But the car was like new, even with 200K miles, and it was very inexpensive compared to the other junk I'd looked at for the same price or more. The prior owner had quite of few of his repair papers and like many of these cars it had the intake manifold redone, a new fuel pump, new water pump, plugs, wires, and one injector, all at around 100K. Also had brakes done several times but no more often them most other cars.

had my Bu for about 2 years, only problem was external head gasket leak. just kept antifreeze in and drove it like that for over a year. had to send to junk yard due to my stupidity with jacking it up in the rear in the wrong spot and bent something that cause the back end to come around when you hit the breaks. didnt want to take the time to fix as I got another car I was fixing. great car tho loved everything about it!

I have had a few issues here and there, got it for free, so all the repairs are good up-to 2,000 dollars. Small leak in A/C lines, repaired and filled for $75 at a Ford lot. I like the car, feels good, great gas mileage, and other than a/c and brakes no problems.

I do love my Malibu - it was a gift, but it's just eating all my money. I got in in February '11 with 115k miles and by August '11 it has 123k, and I've put in almost $1,000 to keep it running. I just blame the water pump/serpentine belt on the age and the control arm on our terrible roads, but it's kicking my butt. I do love my Ali though :) It's not a terrible car but I just don't have the money for the upkeep.

Had one for 10 years, bought it almost new with 40,000kms. I see other people had nothing but problems, not me drove it till 290,000kms only problems I had were it needed an alternator around 150xxxkms and brakes twice. Doors were starting to rust after 9 yrs and 200xxxkms. Handled fine good power and very comfortable. Was always very reliable for me.

Ok this car is junk, why did they make this? Someone gave me this car. For free, all I had to do was fix it up. Leaking coolant, malfunctioning ignition switch, new starter, new head gasket, struts go every couple months, intake gasket went, blower only works on 3 and up, signals don't work, omg the list goes on and on and on, not to mention I've only had this for a little over a year. Don't buy it, or take it for free. Worst car ever built, I will get my vengeance Chevy.

I have owned this used car for 7+ years. Stuck with a 3 year loan, only to shell out more money immediately after buying it! Within the first 6 months, when it hit 50k miles, the engine completely DIED. Spent $4k on a new one. Even after a NEW one, I've replaced the intake gasket 4 times. It's gradually gained a large 6" round rust hole near the bottom of the fuel door. The ignition fails randomly and after 3 repair shops, no one can find the problem. The A/C needs recharged every month during the summer and on 80°F & hotter days, you can't tell it's working. I've quit making repairs ($6k during 3 yr loan!) and am driving it til it's dead. After this car, nothing will make me buy GM again.

traded my 2000 Malibu for a 2010 HHR. Only has 48000 miles, but I never had anything close to a major problem with this car. For 9 years and 9 months it always got me where I wanted to go. It was a very luxurious car for the price I paid. For the last couple of years it sounded like there was a Mexican troope playing castanets in the engine, but I still got 24 miles per gallon. It was one of the best cars I've had and I'm 66 years old.

We bought this car in October 2000 and now at 107k, it has finally died. So many problems every 10,000 miles. Will not miss this vehicle. Wasted so much time and money on the vehicle. Not only will we NEVER purchase any GM product again, if we ever won one on a game show, we would sell it immediately or drive off a cliff. Good riddance to this piece of junk vehicle

When I bought my car it only had 28,000 miles on it. It had been sitting for a couple years so it needed new tires, brake work, and air conditioner fluid. Runs great, never has any problems. Drives extremely smooth. I usually get about 28 mpg. It was my first car. I'm a junior in high school and I'm sure this car will last me well through college.

I bought it used and I have had it over 5 years. Gas mileage is not bad. The interior is OK. I have put brakes on it nearly every year. The A/C randomly stops working. The blower only works on 3 or higher. I have had coolant leaks. Now, my mechanic tells me there is nothing I can do to keep the engine from overheating. The body underneath the gas cap is rusted though. I have seen this on many Malibu's. The turn signals randomly stop working. Don't even think of buying this car, even as a transportation special.

This car had been horrible! Bought it used from a dealer and bought the extended warranty, that was lucky as the knocking and the leaking head gasket wrecked the engine. The insurance paid for its replacement. Then the second engine started doing the same thing! It made a loud knocking sound that "GM does not consider it a problem." Then it overheated and the mechanic did not think it is worth replacing this engine. So the car is junk. We have had the gas door rusting issue and the ignition switch not working issue, the and the turn signals not working issue too. The interior is cheap and we had to replace two speakers that failed. The fan motor does not work in the low speed settings

We bought our 2000 Malibu couple of years ago, thinking is a good balance between price, performance and quality! We were sooo wrong! Although the price was cheap, but not cheap enough to justify the poor performance and the overall quality. The engine is a junk (we had to replace the intake gasket), the A/C system has to be recharged monthly (the compressor and few other things has to be replaced)-still is not working properly! Overall costly repairs!!!

My family bought this car in 2003 and it had 30k miles on it. We barely took care of it. I got it at 70K miles a few years later and drove it into the ground and it was always very reliable! Great acceleration for a standard V6 Chevy! Seats were uncomfortable on long trips but for the price and treatment we gave it, it was an extremely reliable car. It was sold to a friend of mine, it now has 115k miles on it and still has needed nothing in repairs! I cannot believe it!!!

When I bought my 2000 Chevy Malibu in 2003 it had a little over 24000 miles on it.It seemed a good deal for just over 10000. As of 2009 I have probably had over $7000 in repairs. Right now I think the power steering system has passed away. I have had all sort of leaks and wire replacements. I was told by my mechanic that due to the Dexcool coolant that the manual says you are supposed to use it messes up various wires and causes it to overheat. If it wasn't for parental help I would probably be broke and in the gutter. A little after I bought it when I went to use the AC or heater the fan levels periodically stopped working. Driver's side sun visor somehow broke off in my hands. Be wary

There is not much more to say except that I had multiple repairs on this car just months after I had purchased it. Bought this as a demo with 13,000 miles. There has not been a day when this car has not started. Not garage kept and tolerates midwestern winters great. Brakes have been done 3 or 4 times, blower resister just replaced last week, was only blowing on 5. $20 part. Oil changed every 5000-10,000 miles...97% highway driven. Avg 25- 29mpg. Power window switch replaced this past summer (about $100). Husband complained when I purchased 60000 mile tires when car had 160000 mies on it. Bought another set at 222000 miles. Only rust is around gas cap. Serpentine belt has been replaced once, unfortunately, not a do it yourself job. Just hoping I can find another car this dependable.

I bought this car new in 2000. It has been a very good car. No major mechanical problems, only normal wear and tare. Everything still works. Uses no oil. It still drives and rides well. The car is kind of basic compared to some others. Nothing fancy, but less to go wrong. The performance is quite acceptable. It's not a muscle car, but it has enough power. I even pull a small trailer. The pushrod V6 turns fewer RPM at highway speeds than more modern overhead cam engines. But because of the low RPM, you seldom hear any engine noise unless you are really standing on the gas. Fuel economy is decent. What struck me most about this car is that the car feels like a larger car than it really is

I bought my car after renting one from Hertz because I loved the way it handled. I'm 6' tall and can't get into just any vehicle comfortable. With the seat pushed all the way back I have plenty of room and my head doesn't scrape the ceiling. I have over 170000 miles on my Malibu now and it's still going strong. Have an ongoing problem with the A/C compressor cutting off and we've replaced the water pump. The oil is changed regularly and I am careful where I buy gas (also had a problem with bad gasoline). Overall, I'd recommend this car to anyone who's interested in good gas mileage and a fun ride.

I bought this vehicle used with 49K miles. Within the first year it was in the shop for 3 different fuel system problems. After that point, it became a reliable vehicle, with only minor issues. It is relatively comfortable, drives nicely and gets decent mileage. Compared to other vehicles, repairs and service work are inexpensive. It is a plain, dowdy car, but it serves its purpose.

The 2000 Chevy Malibu is a poorly built car. It seems that I and many other people have had trouble with the Intake Manifold Gasket which needs to be replaced about every 50000 miles,I am already on my second gasket. The cost is around $600. Along with ABS, fan switch, and brakes this makes for a very expensive car to maintain.

I've had this car 7 yrs & I've had nothing but problems. It only has 67,000 miles as I don't do much driving except work & errands. I also do the reg. maintenance. I have an extended warranty that has been my lifeline in terms of shelling out money. Every time I take it to the dealership for repair, the same problems start back up a couple of weeks later. I have the manifold gasket repaired, my transmission replaced, the drivers side control panel replaced, the a/c control panel replaced(3x), fuel pump, a couple of the fuel injectors, the water pump & some others I am sure I am leaving out. So this is my second Malibu since I started driving. I've had a Hyundai, Nissan, a Mazda, and the two Malibus. Wrecked the first one, bought this because I liked the first one so much. However, in the past six months I've had the water pump and the taillights mysteriously go out, didn't know that could happen. For the most part I've been pretty happy with it up until now, torn between, fixing this one or getting a new car. $250 is my quote for the taillights, not even sure if that includes the dash and console lights that don't work as well. All in all a great car as long as I don't go out at night.

I bought car new and have put 166,000 miles on it in 7 years. The engine (2.8l) and transmission are great for what I paid. Have lived with 1and 2 blower speeds out and A/C kicking on/off for last few years. Twice I have had to have fuel pump replaced (in tank!). But overall I have gotten my money's worth.

Rented one and loved the performance. First 50,000 miles no issues. Then had to replace manifold gasket and fan control twice. At 100,000 the manifold gasket, air conditioning compressor, and rack n pinion need replacement. Still gets over 30 mpg on long trips but typically 16-20 mpg in suburban driving. As usual, Chevy had a good idea that was executed poorly.

I don't think I will buy another Chevy.

In the beginning I loved my car, but recently it has turned into a "cartoon" car. It seems like things are always popping off of it. Can't keep a wheel cover on one wheel. The sun visor came off in my hand one day recently. Can't roll down one of the windows. One of the A/C buttons won't stay on. The speakers are crap. Sometimes my non existent anti theft system kicks in and I cannot start my car. The first time that happened it cost me $165 for the tow and to get it "fixed". In reality, they just reset the computer. It happened again a week later and when I called the shop they told me how to get it started. Just turn the key on ACC and let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Poor buy on my end. The metal around the gas cap is already bubbling, front wheel bearing and idle control sensor has also gone out on me. Also had a problem with the Dexcool in it turning to sludge and, as a result, looks like I might have to replace an intake manifold gasket. Gas mileage is great for this car, but the bad far outweighs the good. It can be peppy at times but it just feels cheap and based on the money I've invested in it, I'd say it's not worth even looking at one of these cars.

I've had nothing but problems after I bought this car. Water coolant light come on corrrectly because antifreeze did leak. Manifold replaced. Hazard light switch replaced because it caused electrical problems with turn signals. Still haven't fiqured out why there's some interference with the CD playing. Automatic Transmission, had something replaced because it wouldn't shift into reverse sometimes. Rotors&pads trash. From the looks I thought I liked but engine is trash. Other reviews on this site that okay this car because the problems they had were covered under warrant don't make sense. A problem is a problem even if under warranty. Wait till the warranty runs out and you find more problems. I've owned Chevys before and loved them. Other than the engine & electical& trans problems the car's ok. But the engine is the reason for a car

I love the taupe leather seats in my Malibu LS Gold Edition , I also love the power sunroof, seats, fog lights and cd and tape decks. This car gets excellent gas mileage and is VERY powerful with plenty of standard features. The SFI 3.1 liter V6 handles smooth and is excellent for traveling and fun in the sun. I would recommend this beautiful car to any one who is interested in many luxury and reliability options.

I got it for the gas mileage and just the right size for me, inside and out. The seats could be more comfortable. Gas mileage, I average between 27.5 and 30 mpg. Once got 35.9 on a trip. Have recurring klunks and thunks in the suspension. I've had the 1 & 2 setting on blower switch go out, and the AC compressor shuts down without warning. The lighter weight of the car is a curse in the wind. Some decent wind, and I have to work the wheel to keep her on the road. Other than fuel pump shutting down, the engine and transmission have been smooth, consistent and no problems, and at 146,000 miles is still running and shifting like a low-mileage car.

I liked my Malibu, the interior was nice, roomy, and comfortable. The engine was built poorly, about a year after I had it, I had to fix an oil leak, my head gasket caught on fire, water pump broke, replaced roters, fix electrical wiring, fix gas pedal (sticking), idled high, very poor on gas, and made a clinking noise. Although with all my problems if the engine was built better I would buy another. I got into a really bad car accident and totaled the body work on the car. My engine, a passanger, and I came out with out a scratch. As for saftey this car is most reliable, as for engine wise, junk!

The car is roomy, and reasonably comfortable. I have not had the problems like I have read about but I have had the 1&2 setting on blower switch go out. The car feels solid and has plenty of get up and go for merging into traffic. I would like headlights that I could shut off if I wanted to, but really it automatic lights are a better idea so I don't have to remember. Car has 64000 miles and the water light came on. Took it to shop and they replaced a gasket. It was under warranty so it dod not cost much. The interior seems chintzy. Cheap pastic buttons and switches, but at least it is reliable.

This was my 1st car. I got it as a college graduation gift. I saw it on the lot and test drove it and fell in love with it (think it was the sunroof and the cheesy woodgrain). A year later, I wish I would have left it there! It's been problem after problem! At first, it was the brakes. Then it was the hazard/signal lights which have their own mind. Now, it's the intake gasket problem that is going to cost a MIN of $1000! And the value of the car has went down tremendously. I am seriously about to trade this car in for an Acura RSX or a Honda Accord or something--- anything but a Chevrolet!

When I first looked at the Malibu it seemed that it was a great deal for a fairly reliable car. Unfortuneatly, I didn't research it very well ahead of time. Since purchasing the car I have had 2 MAJOR problems. I have had the fuel manifold leak engine fluid into my oilpan and was unable to get the problem diagnosed properly until I suggested that the problem might be the manifold, and I have a big electrical problem where my turn signal somehow got crossed with my CD player and brake electronics. It was very strange because when I would put on my brakes, my turn signal would start up, or if it was already on, would skip of few blinks. Overall, be careful and make sure you get a warranty.

I have had all of the same experiences as everyone has described here. Only difference is that in the past 2 years, we have put $10,000 worth of work into it. Word of warning to those of you who work on the car yourselves. Don't take the sun visors off because they are impossible to get back on without breaking them! We move a lot due to the fact that we are a military family, and our car has had to be fixed in 4 different states over the three year span that we have owned it! I am also not happy with what Chevy calls "routine maintenance" i.e.:EGR valves and fuel injectors.

I am the second owner of my 2000 Malibu LS and I love it. The multi-adjustable drivers seat makes for very comfortable driving. It is a 6 cylinder so has good pickup and the engine runs quietly. The interior is nice and has extra storage in the console. However, the front end of this car has been wrecked twice, once by my daughter and once by myself. Both times we were traveling under 25 MPH. The other cars involved sustained very minimal damage. The Malibu however, sustained an awful lot of damage for the impact it incurred. The front bumper is plastic, therefore damages (falls partially off) very easily, along with some other parts of the front end, both times topping $3000 in damage.

The quality of this car is a major step up from Chevy cars of the past. Other than being on my 3rd set of brakes, I've had no major mechanical problems. I wouldn't have one without leather, a sunroof, and a spoiler because they really improve the look. I wish the leather seats were a little more comfortable. I have back pain during long rides. The resale on American cars is still poor. I'm trading mine in soon and after 5 years it will bring 1/10 of it's original sticker price. I think this car has held it's value better than that because mechanically it's very sound.

My wife and I have had this car for 5 years now. We actually bought it in Jan. of 2000 for a steal, $17,700 and the car is fully loaded! I have seen a lot of negative feedback on this car but mine has been a pleasure. We have been truly blessed to have such a dependable car. We have only had small problems such as the hazard light/turn light problem, air conditioning blower not working on 1 or 2, and the window motor broke down. All problems were fixed inexpensively after warranty expired. The car has close to 107,000 miles on it and we have only replaced the brake pads 3 times and no rotor damage at all!! God truly blessed us with this, from the price all the way to the reliabilty.

I'm a busy grad student and bought my Malibu for the overall value. I have leather seats (should be heated) A Sunroof, CD player, and rear spoiler. The engine has just enough pep to it to get by. However, GM did have a problem with the front rotors which i had to fix after only putting on an addition 10,000 miles from 35,000 - not fun for $300. Another flaw was the blower fan not working on settings 1 and 2 but you can replace the part yourself and it only cost 25 bucks at a parts shop. (this is a common problem with GM) Besides that no problems, so check the rotors and ask if the blower fan has been fixed and you should be in the clear. I highly recommend this car. Low Price, Great Value!!!

Had a bad experience buying the car but loved it every since. We had problems with the rotors and pads in the beginning but that was under warranty. Then we had the fan control go out on us. Just recently we had the EGR valve go and have had a problem where the AC when it is on MAX it will all of the sudden shut down to the regular AC. But other than those we have been very happy with the car.

Way to many problems for a 4 yr old car. The brakes (rotors+pads), intake valve, alternator, starter, A/C switch, battery, and who knows what other surprises await. . . I regret that GM does not stand behind their cars like Honda - they know those rotors are trash, but tell you it's your problem. And they wonder why they lose market share.

I am glad I chose to purchase the Major Guard Extended Warranty on this vehicle! While the car looks nice and drives wonderfully, it has had mechanical problems left and right. I have had to have the following problem corected: A/C would turn itself off, the blinker quit blinking, two front wheel bearings (sp?) had to be replaced, the head gasket cracked and I had to have the gaskets and lifters replaced and the car didn't even have 45000 miles on it.

I bought my Malibu two years ago with 37,000 miles on it. I now have 193,000 miles on it. I use it for deliveries and drive approximately 300 miles a day, so it really gets a workout. It is very comfortable to ride in and has very good space throughout.I have had no problems with this car other than the brakes that seems everyone has had.Chevy dealers charge twice what everyone does for thew brake work... I suggest going to Pep Boys and make sure they put their american made rotors on it, not the Japanese. I am trading this one in for a newer 2001/2002 Malibu with lower mileage.I love it!

I've had many of the problems mentioned here - break wear, blower not working on 1 or 2, etc. My dealership would NOT fix the brake problem under warranty. They said it was due to 'normal wear and tear', though I only had 30,000 miles on it - probably 90% highway driving. Even in 2000 everyone knew it was a design issue, but they refused to cover it - so it cost me $250. The workmanship is pretty bad. The cover keeps coming off the control panel in the driver's armrest, the trunk liner ripped away from the trunk, and the cargo net hooks ripped out of the liner. The gas tank is smaller than advertised - they claim it's 15-gal, but it's more like 12.5-13 gal.

After owning it for less than a year the a/c switch would not stay on. Luckily that was covered by the warranty. May2003- the head gasket seal blew - goodbye $900! July 2003- the turn signals quit working and the fan would only blow on settings 3, 4, and 5. Bye, bye another $300. January 2004-the radiator cracked and leaked onto the belt, ADIOS to a grand! This doesn't even include the 3 sets of brakes and new rotors that I've put on the car. I can't afford to live this way! $2200 is seven months is too much to pay for a car that is only worth twice that. Next time I'm buying a Honda!

The brakes are the big problem. Front brakes will constanly need turning as they warp(too much pressure from chassis design). Cold engine tick can be cured with new teflon coated pistons. Problems with the heat/ac/ventilation control, usually need replacing.

We loved this car when we first purchased it used...read about brake issues, etc. but didn't have any problems with that until after 50,000 (unless those had been repaired before our purchase). Our big problem has been a fuel issue. The car just quits at 65 mph about every 5-6 months. It does that for about two weeks then seems to be fine again. We've had the fuel pump checked, and it seems to be fine. Mechanic can't find a problem, and it's producing no codes...we're now trading vehicles.

This is a good reliable vehicle. Very cost competitive in price and operating costs. I have good results in dealing with the Chevrolet dealer organization. Overall - a good experience with this car.

This is a fun car but I had so many problems! The main problem was the brakes - I had SEVERAL sets of brakes and rotors put on, and I do all highway driving so it wasn't my fault. Another problem that scared me was when some sensor went bad and the car started accelerating by itself. The proverbial straw was when it refused to start twice in one week and had to be towed. I have since traded it for a new Honda. I'm so glad I spent the money on the extended warranty - it more than paid for itself!

I agree with all the other reviews that I have read the brakes are terrible. I have also had some additional electrical problems all of which I have seen in the other reviews. These problems are buzzing turn signal, cruise will not stay engaged, blower speed switch stopped working on 1 and 2. The factory tires are horrible; I had to replace them at 27000 miles. There is a knocking sound in the engine when cold. The dealership has been great and I purchased the extended warranty so I have not spent much out of my pocket. I have recently noticed a squeak while driving, I wonder what that could be.

Purchased new. Now 42,000 miles. Starts, runs, everything works. Good balance of size, interior, price. Very tight steering system and corners well. Can do a fairly long road trip with out comfort issues. Dealer has been very good. Had some problems early on. Replaced an engine(3.1L) due to knocking (bad pistons, damaged cylinder) Replacement engine clatters like a diesel when cold but doesn't seem to be an issue when warm and apparently still goes many miles. Gets great mileage 32 mpg highway. Original Firestone tires were junk, started making noise at 30,000 miles. Even though rotated at 6,000.Have not seen the brake problems I hear about.

I've had just a couple of problems with this car that at least in my estimation aren't huge. After 56,000 niles I've put two sets of disc brake pads on and had the rotors turned once. I've had to replace one front wheel bearing (complete with the anti-lock sensor in it) for $160.00, and I currently need to put a set of tires on it before inspection, but all in all it has been a good reliable family car that can also satisfy my occasional desire for performance and speed (darn governer!!). I think this car has a little bit of luxury to it for a great price.

Not a bad vehicle for the price except for chronic brake problems that many others appear to have (if you must buy this car, get the extended warranty!). Problems with A/C also common and annoying clacking noise from engine. Fairly roomy interior, but seats lack leg support for taller drivers on long trips. Would be fairly happy if GM could correct brake problems but they don't seem to have the will or ability to fix. Sorry GM, you blew it with this consumer... just bought a new Toyota

I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE FROM MY 2000 MALIBU. I HAVE HAD TOO MANY SETS OF BRAKES AND ROTORS TO EVEN COUNT. I HAVE HAD A NEW POWER STEERING PUMP, NEW BATTERY, NEW FUEL TANK FLOAT. MY ENGINE HAS KNOCKED FROM THE START. MY TURN SIGNAL HAD A BUZZING NOISE AND AFTER 3 TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY FINALLY FIXED IT AFTER I THREATENED TO SEE A LAWYER. I HAVE BEEN STRANDED WITH SMALL CHILDREN SEVERAL TIMES. I HAVE BEEN TOWED AND I HAVE RECEIVED NO SATISFACTION WHEN TRYING TO DEAL WITH GM ABOUT PROBLEMS. THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO GIVE ME $1,000 TOWARD A NEW CHEVROLET PURCHASE. (YEAH RIGHT)

I bought my 2000 Malibu LS new in August 2000. I have had to replace the brakes and rotors on it a few times, and the brake work was covered by the dealership while under 36000. I have had some minor problems with the AC, the blower motor went and I had lost the two lowest fan speeds. I have had to replace the tires and battery. Overall, its been a dependable car and my dealership, Cloverleaf Chevrolet, has been excellent. Not sure if I would by another Malibu, but I would definately buy and get service from the same dealership again.

After 3 years of leasing this car I am very glad to return it to the (less than professional) Dealership. If you are thinking of buying a Malibu Don't. It has developed a squeak and groaning noise from the front suspension. The brakes are sub-par and had to be replaced after 2 years even though I am not heavy footed. The paint finish is substandard and the interior also. Do yourself a favor and check out a Honda Accord

Bought my Malibu in January 03 as a replacement for my 93 Corsica, and this car is soooo much better. I love the look of my black LS with the gold emblems and the rear spoiler. With only 46,763 miles on my 2000 Malibu I didn't expect the transmission to go. Not to mention, warped brake rotors, cheap tires, and poor cooling & heating system. When the transmission went out I contacted two local dealers. Both of which didn't want to deal with the problems and gave me the 800 # for GM customer service. GM informed me that they couldn't help me either, as I didn't have documentation of service done at a GM dealership and couldn't prove that I hadn't tampered with the transmission! I'll never buy GM again due to product quality and NO customer service. My advice . . do not buy a Malibu.

I took a week vacation and when i got back it was worse than ever, it went away after a few stops. Still grinds after every use or when it sits for a period of time.

oh god where to I begin. Well for one thing GM cars gotta be the cheapest looking vehicles on the road. every GM car looks the same with those cheap plastic nobs and materials. Id rather pay the extra dough for an Import that actually looks and feels good. I bought it as my first car and didnt really care for it. parents just got it for me. I "had" problems with the brakes brought it in like god knows how many times. Noisy powertrain when revving that weak 170hp. Now Im happy. I got a 2000 Maxima that really doesnt give me problems. Good engine and just a plain ol good car.

We got our Malibu in March 2000, now at 60,00 miles it has not had one problem what so ever. The brakes went at that was it. The tires got replaced at 50,000. The v6 acceration is stunningly good for a 170 horsepower sedan. The space is just right, and for the most part it is comfortable. One problem the interior materials are VERY cheap. So many things have gone wrong with the interior. The door lock base broe, the emergency brake pedal cover fell off. The holder so ou wont burn yourself with the seatbelt broke. Also, the speakers blew out, and I put a better set in. All in all chevy did a good job a car with minor flaws.

My wife's father and brother are GM employees, so we've had a string of leased GM vehicles, starting with a 1993 Olds Cutlass Ciera. The 2000 Malibu replaced a '97 Lumina for us and the improvement was immediately noticeable. Although a size class down from the Lumina, it was just as roomy and had a much more solid feel. Handling, ride, and road noise were all much improved. Over time, the Malibu has had its glitches. We've had a little trouble with the electrical system; the running lights dim and the heater loses strength on long trips. However, the Malibu, for the money is a dependable car and a pleasure to drive.

12000 miles went rather peacefully a rattle from passenger airbag cover fixed by the dealer at no extra charge, brake rotors replaced at no extra charge The transmission oil went bad by 47000 miles and I could feel it while driving. The air filter was bad at 25000 and 50000 while GM recomments replacement at each 30000. most of my driving is highway and i get 29mpg almost all time. The mechanic recommended a coolant flush by 4 years 65000 miles instead of GM's 5 years 150000 miles recommendation to save the water pump. at 57000 miles feels like the car needs a tuneup.

Purchased this vehicle as a program car. Have been very displeased with the quality. The turn signals have a short in them appeared at 20K miles, makes for a truly annoying buzz everytime you turn the sinals on. The airbag light had a short, appeared at approximately the same time was told it was a separate issue. The hazard light switch is going out, likes to flash whenever it pleases. The brakes have a serious problem dealer stated poor design, would continue to be a problem. They were repaired under warranty but the problem has returned 20K miles later. The leather interior is cheap. The leather is worn in several places even small tears.

Bought this on Dec 31, 1999, to replace my 93 piece of junk Taurus. I was leery as well, heard mixed reviews on this. Three years and 45,000 miles later, I am quite pleased with this car, considering what you get for the money. Excellent V6 acceleration, good passenger room, large trunk, many features. Only problems, leaky intake manifold, affected the heater (fixed in a day), and slightly warped front brake rotors (again, fixed in a day, under warranty). I feel like I got a great value with this.

Nice looking car, comfortable interior but many mechanical problems. Brakes, engine hesitation at freeway speed, cruise control not functioning etc. I really like everything about the car except for the mechanical defects and my dealership does not offer good customer service when something goes wrong. Safety is a high priority for me and when my lease is up in May 2003 I will be happy to get into another car that I can feel safe driving. Okay, we've anyone thinking about buying a used OR new Malibu should first check out a Camry or Altima. The engine has had a tapping noise from day one, 4th set of brakes in 35,000 miles, A/C has a mind of it's own, rattles get progressively worse, front end is mushy, dealer acts as though Malibus have no known service issues. HA! There have been over 200 "service notices" since this particular style of Malibu came to market in 1997. My dealer hates to see me coming at this point. My vehicle is leased, and is going back to the dealer where I purchased it from at lease end. BEWARE of OFF LEASE MALIBUS!

I bought my 2000 Malibu in 10/00. I decided to go with the Malibu over an Accord to save money. I had to replace the rotors at 34,600. Then again at 38000, 44000, and 48000. My lower intake manifold cracked at 46000, and that was merely $1600 to get fixed. I too get colder air from my recirculate than from my A/C. My biggest complaint is the resale value. I got the Malibu for $3000 less than the Accord,I still owe over $9K and it's trade in is just over $6K. If I had bought the Accord I would owe just over $11K and it would be worth $14K. So instead of saving $3K I lost $6K(not including repair costs). Bottom line? I'm buying a Honda.

Even I took it to the dealer for revision, it makes annoying sounds and bumps (ABS seems to be out of sync). Malibu Surprise! That's what we humorously refer to our Malibu LS as, if you think it will be there, ha, gotcha and surprise.... Seriously though, I did expect more from a $18,500 car purchase. This is unfortunate, unreliable, and costly to keep going. I have had 6 warranty calls, a brake job, and now the electrical is out. Take my advice, buy a different car.

I bought my Malibu in May of 2000. It currently has 33,400 miles on it. The first thing that went wong was the selector knob for the blower. The blower was blowing out of of all areas. When we took this apart the black rubber gasket was not in place, rejusted it and now it is fine. My tires are cracked inside the tread. One of my tires is bubbled up on the outside & wobbling. No brake problems yet. There is knocking coming from under the hood until the car warms up.

My malibu is a purple colour with a hot spoiler, bra and crhome exahust. The interior is a lame checker weaving but I eventually got used to it. Iv'e had my share of problems but overall I would recomened it to anyone. I have a big problem with the pistion making a knocking sound so I took it in and they said it was normal but it sure dosn't sound like it! And just like most malibu owners my brakes keep warping and i will need new roters next time it happens. Iv'e noticed that alot of malibus seem to get front driver side flats all the time. O'well.

Love my Malibu

I love my Malibu, it is classy, stylish, and very comfortable to ride/drive in. I love the Bronze exterior as well, paint job is excellent. The best part of this car is the power, excellent kick! The trunk is very, very roomy, and I love all the room on the inside of the vehicle. I would buy a Malibu again! This car is an exceptional value for as little as $10,000.

Despite the problems that I have had, I really enjoy my malibu. I have had problems with the AC (a electronic problem caused it to flicker on & off - fixed under warranty), have had the rocker arm replaced, and am concerned about the life of my brake system. But despite the problems, I am really enjoying my car.

Replaced brakes 3 times in the first 15000 miles, had rotors turned twice once at GMs expsense. The next time the dealer refused to do anything so I went to another. They turned the rotors for me..no charge. Transmission went out at 41000, major overhaul no replacement. Went out again at 44000 no replacement. Dealer replaced my rotors, brakes and did a bunch of other technical bulletin work without any problems. Car runs well but I'm always suspect of the transmission after its two previous failures.

this car has had to go back to the dealer 3x for brake repair. I paid $17K hoping to get a reliable car after my husband died instead I feel that I must trade it. Just today, the resistor on the lower part the A/C had to be replaced.

Coming up on 40k miles and have had to had the rotors and brake pads replaced 5 times! Dealer gave me the same bs re: design flaw the first time...3 brake jobs later they still pulsate. I've submitted my complaint to the lemon law lawyers to review. I want my money back. A/C seems about ready to die (flickering on and off occassionally) and my power steering fluid is now all over my driveway. Luckily my dealership is not charging me to fix the pulsating brakes....rotors have 14k mile warranty above and beyond the new car warranty. Brakes also seem to slip in wet weather. I don't feel too safe driving in rain with this car.

I bought the Malibu because it was larger than the 1995 Cavalier and a quieter ride, but I have many more problems with the Malibu than I ever had with the Cavalier. I am at 51,000 miles and about to replace the rotors, which have warped for the second time. The air conditioner keeps switching off for no reason as does the air re-circulation. In a heavy rain, my brake lights shorted out. I'm afraid I will be going a new direction for the next new vehicle.

This car amkes the noises and creaks that you would expect from a 10 year old vehicle. The brakes go quite often. Funny noises come from behind the dashboard and the heater and air conditioner lasted a total of 5 months on anything lower than three. It does not handle well on turns and the power steering goes quite easily. I would not suggest that you buy this car. The looks and name cover up the cheapness of this car.

In 18,000 miles (30,000 km) this car has had three front brake jobs. Rotors were turned at 7,000 miles, replaced at 11,000 miles and front brake bads entirely worn out at 18,000 miles. The car is not driven much, with many miles on the highway. The dealer claims the brake issue is a design flaw. The front strut bushings have been replaced. The JD Powers quality control rating is based on defects in the first 100 days. What about after that time? The long term quality is what you'd expect of a 1970's car. Very disappointing, I wish I purchased an Impala.

I owned a Ford Mustang... I was going to drive it until I got more money but it crapped out on me. So I got a deal and half through the company I work for, dealers invoice with a 1500 dollar rebate for the Malibu. I used to own Avengers and Camaros and Mustangs, ALL can handle "hard" driving... the Malibu really can't. If you drive hard, like take corners to quick and jump off the line... then by pass this value... I have replaced two tires and all four rotars and brake pads... I am currently at 18,800 miles. IF you are a conservative driver, then this is DEFINATELY the car for you... Over all NOT a bad car at all, just dont drive it hard.

I was surprised to read some of the negative remarks about brakes with the 2000 Malibu. I bought one new in Oct. '99 and am just having my first brake work done today (rotors and pads) at approx. 44,000 miles. The only complaint I have with the car, which I saw someone else mention, is that the heat/AC directional dial doesn't work as advertised. I'm happy when I can at least get partial air headed in the desired direction.

Bought my Malibu after 7yrs with a Cavalier. Thought that I would have the same wonderful, reliable car as with the Cavalier. Unfortunately, I have many mechanical problems with this car. Brakes!! were replaced, gear problem-- transmission work, A/C fan unit replaced, difficulty changing the A/C (or heat) from floor to defrost and everything in between. Beware to anyone buying a used one..it may have been someone else's problem.

I bought my 2000 Malibu used with 23K miles because I needed some basic transportation on a budget. What I got was a bargain…so many features for so little money. I've had no problems at all with it (none, zero, nill), and I'm rough on cars. The A/C works great, despite the brutal Texas summers. It accelerates quickly for a basic four- door and handles quite well too. The ABS brakes work well and are very helpful. It's comfortable and roomy, and the looks are contemporary and stylish without going overboard. Definitely a great car for what I paid, I'd highly recommend it.

I purchased a used 2000 Malibu in March of 2001. Barely a year after I purchased it, it had to be in the shop three times in one month. First the check engine soon light kept coming on, next the cruise control would not stay ingaged, and now I have a gasket leak and am unable to get the part for a month. Other than the most recent problems, the Malibu is a nice car. Unless I have a lemon off the line, the integrity of the car needs to be improved. The Chevrolet warranty department is great, I haven't had to pay out of my own pocket yet. This car is great for people with a family.

I feel I spent too much on this car. I have a 2000 STD Malibu. I bought it for 12,000 with 31,000 miles on it. Everywhere I go I see this car and wonder why everyone has the same color as I do (maroon). I took it to the shop a month ago and found out that I need new tires. But of course, I cannot get the tires that they have on sale, oh no. Chevy decided to use oversized useless tires . I have to pay $300 for two tires that none of the brands will put a warrantly on. I still have not changed the old tires, and now they seem to be wobbling. On top of that, the engine is now starting to make a funny noise. I am scared to find out what the problem may be.
