Dreadful Edmonds? How untrue, I traded my wife's 2004 for a 2010 Ford Taurus SEL, what a Mistake!!!!!-lasted 10 months traded it. No driver legroom, blind spots, Too Big console, bad ergonomics!!! As for the Impala's, 2004 only normal maintenance: Oil changes, tranny fluid at 55K, tires, traded it at 65K miles. 2002 Impala, oil changes, tranny fluid x 2, lubed intermediate shaft-steering, computer for car, tune ups, tires sold at 138k for neighbors daughter. I found with regular maintenance, normal driving these cars last a long time. Solid car with an excellent engine, 3800, good ride, quiet depending on tires, solid performer, and very good on gas. Gas mileage, 18-20 city, 28-30 highway. Traded the lousy Ford for a 2011Buick Lucerne CXL, replaced 2002 with a 2014 Chevy Impala. I normally don't comment on forums, but looking for my daughter a car found a 2000 Impala LS, checked Edmunds for their review, and had to say something. In conclusion, I certainly don't agree with Edmonds on this one!!!

bought my 2000 impala ls 3.8 with 75,000, car now has 243,000 i did not expect to still be driving it daily today with virtually no problems. rear strut plates at 210,000 one front wheel baring 175,000, most cars are in the junkyard by now!! HAHA!!!unlike some people i drive the car with the respect of knowing the more its beat on the more its worked on!!! so for oil changes cheep ass oil changed every 3k or so. never touched the trans fluid, last tires got 101,000 out of BUT rotated every 3k or so, goodyear viva 2. i have towed a 3500 lb boat (not very far) class 2 hitch, but very steep hill for short time. and not leaving 1st or 2nd gear, and not hitting the gas like an idiot!!!!

I bought my Impala from my fathers friend last summer after I received my permit. He was selling this car for $1,500 and i talked him down to $300 in the end. The car had a blown intake manifold (Of course) but that's why it was so cheap. I fixed the problem for only a $75. The car runs great and just added K&N CAI on it and these engines LOVE air. The car has 2 new front quarter panels, needs new resonator and manifold (Has exhaust leak), and resonantly the power steering pump is squealing. I'm only 17 but once i get the money to fix it all she will be great. The car is in 100% great condition and looks new. Illegally I took it down my street, it burns tires real good. Has originally 195k.

We've owned our 2000 Impala since it was 8 miles old. Now at 291,000 miles, she's been the most reliable vehicle we've every owned. The transmission was rebuilt at 193,000 miles when 1st gear went out from 6 years of stop & go traffic. She's endured 5 car accidents and has kept me safe. We've proudly replaced the radiator, water pump, cv joints and power steering pump. All expected maintenance on a car with high mileage and with the ORIGINAL engine. We'll drive her till the wheels fall off. The Impala is a great car if you care enough to maintain it.

Bought this used from a dealer in 2003. My dad is still driving it with over 150k miles. Had to replace intermediate steering shaft, and a couple of wheel bearings, otherwise just regular maintenance. I was worried about buying a 1st-model-year car, but this Chevy hasn't let us down.

I have owned it from the start, 9 years now. I've kept up with maintenance and read the owner's manual. Despite this, I've been having problems over the past 3 years that in the past month have come to a head. The problems include a broken water pump, coolant leaks, radiator problems, temperature gauge braking, the window motor failing, a transmission problem that often makes it hard to pull out at green lights, an engine that doesn't like going over mountains, and the blinker wiring's loose. I've brought it to two places that have been trustworthy for family and they can't figure it out. Far too many problems for 65k - was it made on a mon/fri?! Will not buy Chevy EVER again.

My family always drove Fords, I had owned 2 myself before I got my Impala. I love driving it. Handles well, very reliable, great gas mileage(over 29 mpg on highway at 70-75 mph). Large trunk for trips. Best car I have ever owned, and intend to stick with them. Only problem I had, was the radio died, and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, the new radio does not have the auto volumn adjust feature, I really liked it.

From day one we have had transmission problems. Dealer said need new transmission but when we appealed to GM headquarter miraculously we found that it was electrical or computer generated problem. We were told this by someone other than the GM dealer. At a stop light when we give it gas the veh feels like we ran over a railroad track. Still having problems. 6/23/2009

I've driven this car to the moon and back. The car has 255,000 miles now. Transmission was replaced at 180000. Never had any major repairs since. The car is just great. Still drives straight, and still has plenty of power. The car has had mobil 1 oil regularly since its first oil change, and that's the difference right there.

i bought this car against my mother's better judgment. Since I've had the car I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, hoses. and now the radiator. I think the person that had the vehicle before me did not take care of it at all. I love how the car rides and feels when driving down the road. But it is costing me to fix every little thing that breaks one after another.

For anyone who needs a dependable car, that is comfortable to be in, with nice creature comforts this is it. I have over 100K on mine and it runs and drives like a brand new one. It is fast and powerful, yet I still average 28 mpg on road trips. It still looks great with classic Chevy styling. No major work needed. My 17 year old daughter loves to drive it, and my 68 year old mother loves it too. It has mass appeal. So glad I did not buy a Camry! It has held up so well.

i purchased this car with about 25k on it in march of 01'. I drive about 30k miles a year and really test cars. Normally i got a new car every year. With a well maintained 196,540 on my odometer i am pleased to say other than a new battery, oil, tires, and an air filter, the car has been problem free. My mechanic says the car looks perfect mechanically and should go another 200k. I average 28.5 mpg on the highway but have gotten over 31.

When I bought my Impala a few months ago I got a lot of heat about buying a grandma car but when my friends drove it with the 200hp v6 0-60 in under 9 sec. they decided its a nice grandma car. I drive 180 miles per day, and get over 27 mpg cruising at 75mph. When I get out I am not stiff at all. Probably the most comfortable car I've driven. I am 6'4" and have plenty of leg room. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable, roomy car that performs well.

Honestly enjoy it!

Bought our Impala (base model) after I was hit and my 1992 Pontiac Bonneville was totaled. Ride is wonderful. Plenty of room for our family of 5 and can seat 6. I have had toruble with my turning signals ot working properly. We've had the multi-function switch replaced twice and it's now acting up again. Oddly enough, I can some times get the signal to work if I put hazard lights on while the switch is in place for turning. Playing around with it usually can get the signal going again. I wish we had bought the LS model. Our daughter is soon to be driving and she has picked out a 2000 Impala in the LS model. The ride is that good that she passed up the little Mitsubishi Eclipse! Impressive.

I have had this car since late 1999 and the car has lived up to my needs. It has been reliable and without any mechanical difficulties, with only routine maintenance and normally replaced items like the tires and battery. The mileage is down from new when I got 20/29, now I get 17/28, not bad for a car with 80k miles.

Comfort and interior appointments are great. Mileage was excellent and approached advertised rate for the first 40 to 50,000 miles but have dropped to around 15 around town and 26 on the road. Very satisfied with overall performance. No trouble and only been back to the dealer for minor callback's.

Even though it was maintained to factory specs by the Chevy dealer and not driven hard, it has required a new transmission at 75,000 miles, new radiator fans at 70,000 miles, numerous power window motors and numerous batteries. The interior build quality is poor, especially the plastic trim pieces.

I am really getting tired of problems every time I turn around. Now the power steering pump is whining at only 65,000 miles. Also the drivers window is getting stuck periodically. Just about 2 weeks ago had to put it in the shop again. Would not start at times and the security light would come on. Ended up being the BCM (body control module). An electronic part that controls everything inside of the car electrical. Maybe these things are normal to start happening now. I don't know. I am sure getting tired of something going wrong every time I turn around. Just had the ignition switch replaced at 55,000 miles. Rotors replaced twice.

Bought it new. Yes the steering shaft went twice-but I wrote to GM and they paid for out of warranty ($223)repair. Original tires noisy, replaced with Regatta's. The 3800 engine is a dream, quick and 28 mpg at 75 mph. The ABS/traction control feature is absolutely great for snow. The car is still tight and handles extreamly well after five years. I just saw the 2006 Impala at a car show and can't wait to buy it. (and keep this one too). Unlike the smaller sedans this one is built tight and well and is without the excessive road noise you get in the earlier models. Lastly the brakes were imporoved over previous Lumina's although you warp rotors prior to pad replacement, but you do stop.

i bought my impala new in 2000, it has given me very few problems. I had a click in the steering sector that apparently is common on these cars. That was fixed $80 bill from service station. I also had to have intake gaskets replaced at 140,000. Thats about it for problems. My car burns no oil. I go about 6000 miles between oil changes & have never had to add any oil in between changes. The suspension on this thing is something else.I am still riding on the original uniroyals at 163,000. There is still some tread to wear off of them yet but am thinking for the upcoming MN winter i will

Bought the car new. Have had my share of warped rotors. Also problem with steering shaft. Also the security light came on one day. The next day the car would not start. After about 15 minutes it finally started. Ended up being the ignition switch. Had it replaced for a hefty $500.00. Then after that the bypass tube cracked and all of the anti freeze leaked out. That was close to $300.00. I am seriously thinking about buying a Hyundai. The quality has really improved in the last several years. Come on America, build a quality car for a change. Oh not to mention that all of the top surfaces had to be repainted at least 5 times.

The Impala has lots of room. Its also easy to drive a little sensitive maybe but that comes in handy in emergencys. I recently had some idiot him me while I was driving my Impala and it was a very hard hit. The fender was compleatly damaged but nothing not even a speck of dirt hit and internial parts. I really enjoy my Impala. I do a 130 mile/day commute and find it to be very comfortable, good on gas, and because it's a full size sedan, I feel as if I have something to protect me against all the big SUVs on the road. Five adults can fit in the car very comfortably. Smooth, quiet ride. Minimum maintenance. Never let me down. Good in the winter.

I'm not sure why Edmunds rated this car as they did. Ours now has 120000 miles and has only had tires, oil changes and a battery. It is highly reliable, safe and comfortable. It could be quieter but that costs a lot more in other makes for no better a car.

I purchased this car a year ago and have had many problems. One problem was a water leak that the dealership could not pinpoint. My husband had to go down to the dealership and tell them what was wrong. They thought my windshield was leaking, turned out to be the air conditioning was not draining properly so the condensation backed up into the car. Also had numerous problems with valves leaking, blower switch not working for air/heat, wipers breaking during winter, and now the driver's side window switch sticks. The service engine soon light comes on periodically and no one knows why. Glad I bought an extended warranty.

Problems..First with the crunching noise coming from the steering wheel when turning corner. Next problem was the security system would act up every once in a while and would not let me start the car. Then, I started encountering problems with the turn signals....only works when they want to. Recently, I noticed it was hard to start, idled roughly, and was loosing coolant. I took it into Meineke and they said it might be the head gasket. Also, they showed me there was a hole in the air intake screen which I guess was making it hard to start and the rough idle problem. Now my car is sitting outside my apartment and I can't even get it started at all.

Bought the car in Wenatchee,I understand it was the second one sold in the area ,so I paid almost full bore ! The car has only 2 problems that Cascade Chev couldn't or wouldn't solve'1st the radio get's very POOR reception outside of town ,every time I tried to get it fixed they said the problem couldn't be dupilcated, ( I guess so,nobody takes time to drive it far enough out of town ). And the front break rotors seem to warp every 6000 or so miles ,been turned 4 or 5 times and replaced once ,they blame our driving habits, but my 99 Dakota or previous cars haven't had that much of a problem.

i brought the car with 17,900 miles,,,,at 19000 miles the engine coolant came on, and loud metallic noise started while making turns, the dealer replaced the engine coolant sensor, and found no cause for the noise. at 20420 the engine coolant light came on, thank god i check when these lights come on, the coolant leaked in with the engine oil. it is now 15 days and counting, and the car is still at the dealer with the heads out, and still no clue as to why this happened, i truely will not waste my time with another domestic car, no wonder there are so many people buying toyotas!

I bought my Impala June of 1999. I’ve had the car for almost 5 years only very minor problems. About 4 months into having the car my O2 sensor went out. I brought it into the dealership and they fixed it same day no problem. I didn’t have another problem until 3 years later when my front driver side window stopped working. Just needed a new switch. Other than standard maintenance (new rotors and struts on the front after 50,000 miles) I’ve had no problems in 87,000 miles. The mileage includes 3 trips from CA to OK and lots of trips from So Cal to Vegas. One time I made it from L.A. to Vegas in 3 hours doing 100mph on a single tank of gas!

I would suggest getting the additional warranty. Even though I am satisfied with my Impala,I,along with other consumers, had problems with the transmission and sterring columns. Unfortunately after the warranty(3yr- 36m)had expired. I did put an extreme amount of miles on the 1st two years, so that may been the problem

We are very happy with our Impala LS and have had minimal problems with it. Slight rattle after three months, but the dealer fixed and it hasn't been back since. Leather around side air back kept popping off, but fixed by the dealer and problem hasn't returned. After 26 months the altenator shorted out, but was replaced under warranty. The steering wheel was lubed at 27 months for noise. Otherwise no other problems. The car is torch red and receives many compliments from other motorists. Gas mileage is excellent, 17 mpg around town(heavy traffic) and 30 mpg on the highway. The ride is good and the interior and trunk are very roomy.

Good car at a good price.

Performance is great, interior space is great, and it never has a problem. A few minor glitches were fixed under warranty, and since then it has been trouble free. Bought this used with 25k on it, put 11k on in 3 months. Great engine, good power/torque. Wish the handling were stiffer, but it is more than adequate for the average family sedan purchaser. The car has incredible acceleration at highway speeds. Smoked a Honda Prelude on a deserted stretch of interstate a month or so ago -- he gave up when I hit 115.Get the leather seats--they are more comfortable and make the car look SOOO much nicer. It's not a luxury sport sedan, but it's easily the equal of the Accord, Camry, Taurus.

This car was the overhaul best sedan I've been in. Leg room up front is huge, I'm a big guy and can still stretch out. Car is fast, and still gets 23mpg on average for me (chevy says they get 29hwy, but mine gets less). Tires are expensive to replace and my steering makes a crunching sound- also have had small antifreeze leak that they couldn't fix and problems with the car starting. Only have 37k on it, too.

I loved the Impala. Fell in love with the new model when it was released in October of 1999. I was so excited when I purchased my used 2000 model. I have not had anything but problems with it since. If the message center doesn't drive you crazy (which it will) the un- ending repairs will. I have talked with other dealership service areas and they have said they've 'seen Impala's with consistent problems'. I loved my car, right into bankruptcy. Buyer beware.

Bought the 2000 in June 1999. We've put 77,000 miles on with just the minimum normal upkeep. 1 annoying thing - the front window would "ping" like a pebble hit it when the tempurature inside was cooler than out. Weird and annoying!! I just totalled it and my husband wants to replace with new one - same color, etc. They don't seem to have changed in 4 years, except for being $4,000 more. I want to change, but maybe just for change sake. Any comments??

This car ran well at first. However, creaking and rattling noises started in the front of the car, noted in steering wheel. Dealer installed cradle shims (replaced twice). Transmission went at 100,000 miles (torque converter and 4th gear). Was told by servicing company the transmisison was new for 2000, and has reliability problems. Other 2000 Impalas were taken to the same service shop due to transmission. Also, rotors warp and need to be replaced often. I also had a problem with charcoal canister and emission system. I also had a problem with headliner sagging near sunroof. It is a shame that GM produced a car with this many mechanical problems.

Just over 3 yrs, 24k+ miles. Agree with all the positives from the other reviewers; share only a few of the negatives: slight vibration in steering column, dealer repaired under warranty, needing only lubricant. Notice slight shake in wheel when braking lightly at higher speed (rotor issue noted by others?); hesitation once in a blue moon when lightly accelerating. Tranny went on a friend's Impala at 32k, but replaced under warranty. Mine is flawless so far. This is a good, comfortable, attractive, fun car, and perhaps the best overall value for $. Domestic nay- sayers should give it a good honest look.

In cold weather it often barely starts & sounds like it's 10 yrs old instead of 3. Interior is cheap looking. It seems there is always a warning light coming on. Paid 7K less for my wife's Civic which ran for 8 years without any problems. GM has lost me. I'm going back to Honda with my next car.

This is a nice car but suffers from quality problems. I had to replace all 4 rotors 5 times in 100,000 miles due to warping. I also had numerous problems with the steering and shaking. The two things you don't want problems with are steering and braking. GM had no real solution to these problems so I am getting rid of it and buying a Camry. It's unfortunate as this was my first American car I have ever purchased in 30 years and probably my last!!!

Our chevy was a lease which we are buying out. That's how good we like it. The ride is smooth and little exterior noise. It's really a full- size car and can seat a 6 ft 260 lb man comfortably. We purchased the upgraded sound system and it's like having surround in the car. Gas mileage is above average for a full-size car, and our sun roof is heaven in summer time. Only problems were a few loose screws in the beginning - and the dealership was great at service. There's been no knocking like in your other reviews of this car.

I am a realtor and drive alot of miles with customers. This is a nice automobile to drive in winter with icy, snow packed roads. It holds the road well, imparting a feeling of safety for passengers. It is comfortable; easy to get in and out of. I really like my Impala and am thinking of buying the 2003 model. My only complaint is the road noise.

Overall very good. Upgraded tires (Continental CH-95's) made a significant difference. Have had occasional problems with hesitation while accelerating (improved some after servicing), the radio has become tempermental (reception), and had to have a cracked subframe replaced. A perfectly adequate performer for my needs.

I drive for a living to call on many accounts throughout Michigan. I drive in all weather conditions. I have been delighted with the IMPALA. I wanted a car with a comfortable ride, lots of trunk space, engine power and relability. I have only one problem and that is the steering was making a crunching sound. I have had that repaired. All is well. Sometimes the breaks "grab" and make a "jerking" motion. But most of the time there is no problem. I have ordered another one.

Nothing but problems from day one.First probems with keyless entry, receiver replaced, two computers replaced ,the dealer called GM, they told them it was the circiut board behind the instrument panel, problem solved. Next creeking noise when turning sharply to left and right. Dealer replaced steering rack, not the probem.Called GM, They told the dealer it was flex in the engine cradle. Not enough room for the rest of the problems.

Less than 10 days to lease end, and I'm still thinking about buying my base Impala Sedan. No abs, but sporty 16 inch wheels in dark green make the car a looker. I can feel the ride loosening, and the tranny slipping, so I may be unloading at the right time. I did not know the engine cradle was a problem. Anyway, after 37k miles of NY metro driving, I have not replaced the tires, or brakes, just oil & the driver power window switch.

Excellent performance but the subcarriage had to be replaced under warranty. Some problem with the steering [??} makes a noise but was told by dealer not to worry. Now Chevy has some retrofit kit and it has been installed; still some noise though.

Got the Impala as Fleet with 52 miles on it, 98562 miles later the car is still as fun as day one. The steering started to make a clunk sound after 30k but a lil grease fixed it, the air vents are hard to position so that it does not blow right into the drivers face. Fuel economy is something i love, at 30 mpg it gets awesome mileage. the car doesnt make a single squeak or noise. It was a lil noisy on the road noise with the tires that come with the car from the factory, after putting Aquatreds with lower road noise it is alot quieter. This is trully Canadian UAW labor at its best! Love to drive the car.

Great road car with time-tested 3.8 V6. Actual highway mileage up to 32 MPG !!! Intuititively designed, user friendly features. Feels big and safe to drive. Especially comfortable for long drives. Good fit and finish. Best bang for the buck in a sedan for under $30,000.

THIS CAR REMINDS OF THE CORSICA THAT I PREVIOUSLY OWNED. I LIKE THE SIZE OF THE CAR. IT HANDLES THE ROAD VERY WELL. I DRIVE THE INTERSTATE EVERYDAY. WHEN GETTING ON THE ROAD, IT PICKS UP VERY WELL, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A V6. I REALLY LIKE MY CAR. I AM THINKING ABOUT TRADING IT IN FOR A NEWER MODEL. THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE THE LS MODEL.

The car has been not totally what I expected! Steering problems persist. The intermediate shaft was replaced once and now with 25000 miles it needs to be replaced again. Also the transmission was replaced after 15000 miles! If this car is so fun to drive why so many complaints regarding the steering? GM really needs to take a close look at the steering design. Probably will never buy a GM again.

There is probably no other car available with the similar load of features in the same price range. Plenty of low end torque helps you be in cotrol, tons of space inside, 5 stars for safety, very economical use of gas, many well thought features, huge trunk, comfortable seats.

I have just passed 40K miles in two years of mixed driving, and have not had a single problem with this car! Even better, it still shines in performance (quick & agile for a big car), ride (smooth yet controlled), gas mileage (21.7 in mixed driving on regular gas), roominess (biggest trunk around + folding seats), looks (as good and fresh as when new), ergonomics (everything placed for easy use), etc. I've had more expensive cars, but none better!

Now have over 40000 of relatively trouble free driving.Only problems air conditioning condencer leak (repaired under warranty) and warped front brake rotors.Have been to Fla and back several times, as well as trips to Oklahoma and New Jersey. All comfortable, trouble free and excellent mileage on highway at 70-75 mph(28-33+).

I am sure that the problems that I see in the discussions are "fluke" OR that our state inpections are more rigorous than other state's and, therefore, problems are spotted before they become more expensive. The only thing I've had done is the front disc pads replacement in the 55,000 miles that I have owned this vehicle. I have had nothing but outstanding service from my dealership and I am still amazed at the comfort this Chevrolet provides. I was a former HONDA and TOYOTA fanatic, but now those cars are way overpriced for what you get!

45K miles across 15 states (so far) in all sorts of weather. The Impala has been a comfortable and reliable commuter and a wonderful road trip car. It's fun to drive and easy on gas (30+ mpg going coast to coast in the summer). A spacious interior and a cavernous trunk means there really is room for a family of four on vacation for a week. Other than a minor accident (or perhaps vandalism - the external mirror was ripped off) and an act of stupidity (don't drop a foil candy wrapper in the cigarette lighter) it has been just scheduled maintenance.

My 2000 Chevy Impala LS has had nothing but problems . Engine cradle , stearing shaft bearing, brake rotors, side impact airbag. It all started at around 25000 miles. I have taken this car back to the dealer 9 times and it is still not performing the way it should. When riding on a road that is not quite perfect the front end feels loose and makes a slight popping noise. I thank myself for not buying this car because at the end of this lease I can walk away from a car that otherwise I would be stuck in. I don't have anything good to say about this car....

I too have had the knocking sound/feel when turning left. This was at about 35000 miles. I believe the wording of the problem involved the intermediate steering shaft?? Also before that I had problems with the turn signals not working all the time. It took two trips to the dealer to fix that. If it were not for the mechanical problems, I would keep this car forever. I love the overall car. The ride and the handling is great. I am getting 27 mpg which is outstanding for the size of the engine.

At 29000 miles the engine cradle failed, the brake rotors warped, all six pistons were defective (piston slap), and at 32000 miles the steering rack failed. All were repaired under warranty at the dealer. I was in a rental car for almost two weeks while the engine craddle, piston replacement and brake rotors were being fixed. I do not feel confident about the reliability of this car, but is performing OK as I write this review.
