I have owned this car since 1999 and still love driving it. After 140.000 miles I was having some leak issues but had it fixed. Only issues I had was changing break pads often and my tires every two years( Because of the sports package) the car still looks great and is very powerful when you hit the gas pedal. I think it was the best 740 they build. Today I hear horror stories about the new 7 series. Don't understand why BMW is having so much trouble building trouble-free cars. It might be that they are having trouble combining technology with BMW's engines and EPA's regulations. I own two BMW's and one Cherokee Jeep. Looking into maybe trading in my one beamer and the jeep for another X5 but the reviews are not that good. Oh well, just have to keep driving my 740

got this car in 2008, had to replace the engine in 2011, tranny gives a kick in the back had it rebuilt, and it still kicks in the back, love love love the car though, the driving is awesome, on the hwy, ohhh boy, you have to be very mindful, it luvvs the hway, and....it hardly eats any gas on the hwy, but locally, wow, terrible, the drive is awesome though, and ppl still turn to look, a beautiful car, but not cheap

The overall charistics of this car are fantastic. I purchased this car 6 months ago for 8500.00 and it has 74k miles. Its hard to find this much cart for this kind of money. Great value. I own a Corvette and Hot Rod shop and have driven many many car of all ages and types. This 740iL is on my top 10 list of best overall car!

Great car for those who appreciate the dynamics, general drivers may want to steer clear.

This is my 5th BMW, and also my favorite. I’ve owned several 3 series and 5 series. All great cars but the 7 series of this E38 generation is truly special. The powertrain is strong by the standard of the ’00, for 99% of your driving the power is more than adequate. The lines are classic, I still think the best of all BMW and the car continues to turn heads like no other. Clean, taught, uncluttered, and purposeful. The true sport package on the 740i is tighter than most would like, would recommend the non-sport for most people. If you are not mechanically included, or do not have a mechanic you trust and dependent on the BMW dealership, you may want to step with caution.

This car is awesome no other way of saying it. it is better than any 7 series for sale today. the styling is classic. the interior is perfect and doesnt have any bmw i drive nonsense just a good sized navigation system that matches perfectly in the center, the driving feel is awesome too. the leather quality is excellent and the rear seat leg room is something the be seen. the engine may be short of 300 hp but you wouldnt be able to know once you floor it. the engine is perfect, the transmission is one of the smoothest out there. the car may be long and heavy but bmw has managed to make it feel only slightly short of an M3's handling capabilites. this car is a joy to drive.

First, this will most likely be one of the very best cars that you'll ever own. Every aspect of this car is absolutely amazing. The engine is plenty powerful, and the ride is great. The first night that I drove it I didn't want to stop driving. This car has all the features that one could desire. Now it's true that BMW's aren't the most reliable cars on the planet and when it comes time to fix them it usually wont be cheap. DON'T TAKE A BMW TO THE DEALER, or you're an idiot. Either find a BMW mechanic in your area or do the work yourself, it's very easy. If I, being a 19 year-old college student, can afford to keep this car running, you can too. (continued below)

I purposely bought this year because I loved the exterior styling. I did not like the newer ones and I bought in 2007. This is a large car and has the best back seats and legroom EVER. I have fit 5 back there, yes illegally during a Vegas run and had no complaints. They actually had enough room to sit on the floor!! Bought my car with 70,000 miles on it for $18,000.00 plus $2,600.00 for an extended warranty that last 2 years or 100,000 mile, whichever came first. First, thank god I did get the warranty. Second, thank god this was a great warranty and company to purchase from. Here is a list of what was done before the car hit 100,000 miles. All handled without question, although an inspector

My 2nd 750 has been the same as the 1st in terms of performance & problems. My 1st, a '99 bought @ 51Kmi & totaled @ 105Kmi, not a horrible crash by any stretch, major damage under the car was the problem. Current vehicle bought @ 41Kmi now @ 53Kmi. Nothing but batteries so far but the oil service light just came on so I am prepared for at least a grand for the soon to be scheduled service by BMW (Break My Wallet). Will probably do the plugs (12). If you can't afford a few grand/yr. in service, this is not the car for you. Sway links & thrust rod bushings will be covered. Extended warranty for 48Kmi/48 mos. cost $4,100 & if you own these cars, you had best get a top of the line warranty.

Bought the car almost three years ago. My first Bimmer will likely be my last. As much as I love driving the car, it is waaaaay too costly to fix. The plastic (!!) tank on the radiator split 5 days after I purchased the car. I've had to replace the water pump, thermostat, and power steering pump. Right now I could drop $8k on the car just to fix the many problems that I live with, including: - ABS computer dead (no traction control), - Thrust bearings in front suspension, - Tranny needs to be replaced (but car still drives, - engine failsafe program kicks in about once a month). Now my car won't pass a smog check because the check engine light STAYS ON.

Rolled over 100,000 7/09. Just put new front brake pads/rotors ($650) & rear pads ($253), air mass meter ($1000), PCV valve ($500) & drive belts ($211). Car still runs well and drives great. There has been one other front end issue described as "rubber mounting" for $566. Gas mileage is about 24 hwy, 14 city. 16,000 mi between oil changes. Valve cover gaskets leaking on each side and hoses need replacing ($1000) and it has a leak at the timing chain cover ($$$). Replaced Kumhos after 30k mi with Micheline Pilot Sport+ ($$). Overall, however, a good experience. At this age, car will not depreciate very fast. There is a noise, however in the front end, that has gone undiagnosed by 3 dealers.

Car now has 95k miles. At 85k mi nav unit in trunk failed; replaced with used unit/upgrade ($250). At 93k car developed minor leak - valve cover gasket. Put new Mich Pilot Sport + after 30K on the Kumhos. At 94k air mass meter failed along with PCV valve; fixed valve cover gasket at same time totaling $1400. Car averages 15k mi between oil changes, though I will start doing it substantially more often now. Still the most fun car I've ever owned and can't get excited about anything else out there. Overall, I have not had that much trouble with the car. I don't see much in the way of keeping it another 25-30k miles; after that, we'll see.

So I bought my 740i back in March of this year. this is my 2nd BMW and I am going to say I am very impressed with the vehicle. Has a beast of a engine, for a 2 ton car it will beat the crap out of a stock Camaro SS. The outside design is classic BMW which is why I bought this car instead of one of the newer 7 Series cars. The interior all be it a bit bland is very comfortable and ergonomic. No scientist needed to figure out the Nav or how to run the A/C. Car gets moderate mileage per gallon, about 18 around town and 24 on the highway. Not bad for a v8 that is a hoss. As expected for a BMW off of warranty, you will not want to get repairs done at the dealership, find a good tech.

I bought this well-cared-for car from a private owner in 2005. Car had 63,000 miles. After 3 years and 16,000 additional miles, both my alternator and water pump failed. Total bill, including hoses and thermostat was $2800 (labor, parts and 7% state sales tax!). Other minor problems over the past three years include peeled finish on the BMW hood emblem due to drive thru car wash brushes (about $15 to replace - a bargain!!) and I had broken clips on front plastic “kidney” grilles. Breakage may have been due to engine heat. Each grille costs about $60 to replace. Oh, yeah, just like so many other reviewers, my cup holder is broken too! Maybe it's time to sell.

Mileage per gallon - excellent. In the low country of S.C., highway at 5 mph over the speed limit (usually 75), gets 27.5 mph! Response to accelerator - great! Handling on curves, u-turns - unbelieveable. Wheels have never been out-of-line!

This car has been amazing. I bought this car from someone who loved it but felt it was getting too old and too many miles (112,000). I've had it three years and have put over 60,000 miles on it. It may not be as carefree as an acura or lexus but it makes it up when you take it for a ride. You will need to replace the water pump about every 50k, alternator at about 100k, suspension checked and replaced at 100k, power steering line has been replaced. There was a check engine light on when I purchased the car, the owner fixed this, some kind of air leak around the intake. Do not take this car to the dealer after warranty. This has been an excellent vehicle to own! I wouldn't have it any other way, and I'm probably hooked on BMW for life! I plan on keeping my 740i sport for a long time, while I add new vehicles to my arsenal. I have had some problems with it however, the radiator did crack and cost me 1500 to get a new one. This was the only downfall it had, and I missed my car the whole time it was getting fixed. I hate the cupholders, but in every relationship there is one quality we don't like about out spouse, but loving those faults is what makes love in a relationship.

Without question, this is the greatest car I have ever driven. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive car on the planet to drive. Since the car went out of warranty in Oct 2005, I've had to put nearly $20k into the car. Something seems to fail every six months, and as someone else noted the cost of a typical repair is anywhere from $700 to $4,500. I've had many different mechanics work on the car, and all say the same thing: Best car to drive, worst car in terms of maintenance. Expect to put $5,000 into the car each year for repairs/maintenance. You mat get 300k miles out of the engine, but it'll cost ya $300k to do it! That said, the BEST ride on the road, hands down!

I've now owned this car for a little over a year and a half. Being that I needed a highway cruiser, this car was an excellent choice. Before buying these cars, find out if some of the common problems on your model have been addressed. Namely, the radiator and fan need to be replaced at around 60k-70k miles. The waterpump and thermostat need to be replaced at that time as well and as others have mentioned, the front suspension parts don't last too long. Don't forget though, this car weighs over 4,000 lbs! Driving this car will wear down the front suspension quickly. Expect to replace it every 50k miles or so. Also, the cupholder is flimsy, therefore I bought a wedge-type holder and it's great.

Just bought a used 750iL BMW in pristine shape, although it already had 77,000 miles, the owner loved this car to death. The power of the V12, 5.4 liter engine is staggering. I own a 2003 Jaguar Vanden Plas, and it doesn't even compare to the 750iL, which has more playtoys, better feel, better acceleration with the steptronic. Going 80 mph in the BMW seems like you are barely moving, and I think it really gets 25 miles to the gallon on the freeway, not 20 as advertised, not to mention you can go 500 miles on one tank of gas on the highway, thanks to the 25 gallon tank. Hands down, I love my 750il BMW, and it is simply the best.

I've now had the car for 30K miles and nearly 3 years. I still love it. I bought the car as a certified used unit & during the BMW extended warranty, I've had a new radiator and water pump as well as two oil leaks. Each time the dealer has promptly repaired the car for a $50 co-pay. New brake pads were my cost ($$$). I replaced the OEM Contintal Contitracs with Kumho Ecsta's and am very pleased with the improved mileage & I can't tell any significant difference in handling, but the car is much quieter. I hope to drive this car another 60K miles. The extended warranty expires within a month or so and I may hedge my bets by buying another warranty, based on my experience with the 1993 740

I always loved the E38 Seven Series. When the Sport Package came out I was even more impressed. I never thought I would own one. A deal came up this past winter and now my dream is reality. The car is awesome. Performance is stellar, the ownership experience is beyond expectation. What's amazing is that while the car is five years old, it demands the respect of a brand new premium car. I intend on keeping it for a very long time or until BMW gives me a compelling reason to upgrade and the new Seven, even with the improvements to the new design, won't do the trick. I'll keep my "used" car.

The BMW 740 is with out a doubt the best driving large sedan on the market. However, it suffers from serious flaws that one would not expect from a car that costs in excess ot $65,000. The on board computer dispay failed (the dealer said pixel burnout was common at about 3 years). I have a broken the cupholder and numerous climate control knobs fail. One door panel has had problems staying on as does the side panel. It seems to cost me 2-4 thousand dollars every time I see my dealer. I have probably had $5000 worth of suspension work done over the last 18 months. My previous car was a Mercedes S420 at about the same age had very few problems. Quite frankly the BMW has been a terrible car.

The car is fun to drive, but at $73,000, I wouldn’t expect this many problems. The front suspension has been replaced, twice, the trannie was replaced, the dash stopped working, the fan blades EXPLODED and cut the radiator lines and punctured the hood. The drivers seat has stopped working 3 times, the nav system display broke, the engine leaks oil, and the car has less than 50,000 miles on it. Not worth the price paid at any cost.

The car is new to me - but has exceeded my expectations in every way, peroformance, ride, and handling are outstanding. The Sport Pkg stiffens the ride and the seats are fairly restraining - much more so than the non sport pkg - but that's why I bought it. Classic lines and enough room for 5 people. Nice exaust note as well. I shopped the Audi A8, Mercedes E500, Lexus, and Infinity - each time, I came up with more value and more car for the money with the BMW. Would only buy this car though with the Sport Package (Steptronic). Much more fun to drive!

With 69K miles, I was not too concerned, since the car was extremely clean and new brakes and rotors. Since purchased, had to replace camshaft positioning sensor - $180 installed. Car was running poorly and engine light was on - fixed now. Moreover, had to replace front sway bar tie rod ends - $80.00 self installed. Car still running strong - next maintenance will be plugs, fluid changes.

This by far is the finest automobile I have ever owned. Bought it certified from the dealer. They have been great. This car is fast, quiet and a great handling vehicle. Maintenance items covered under warranty: New radiator, rain sensor, valve timing sensor. The regular maintenace items are in line with what a car this complex should cost.

It is certainly a great car. The handling is superb -- acceleration, steering, and braking. Its exterior design is beautiful -- far better than the new 745. The ride is comfortable, but you can "feel the road", unlike some other luxury cars which are cushiony. I highly recommend this car.

This is an awesome road car. I've driven it about 5,000 miles on 6 trips in 4 months and am very pleased. This was a BMW certified unit. So far, no problems, but the Service Engine Soon light comes on intermittently; service center says it is likely something on the emissions systems.

As a prior owner of Infiniti and Lexus, this car is definitely not Japanese. Like Q45 it's performance oriented and does it in a style. Like Lexus it's luxurious yet rugged. Even though it's interior is not as a sophisticated as a Jaguar, it's still very uptown. It's the Drivers Car. On a twisting road it lets you know it's a BMW.

This is my first BMW and so far in over a year it's been fairly reliable - the only problem was a battery that failed about 2 months ago. I expected a competent sedan - but realize every day that this is a performance sedan first, that also happens to be quite luxurious. I can't imagine having more fun driving four of my full sized friends in exceptional comfort...

As a previous owner of Japenese luxury vehicles, I thought it was about time to give BMW a try. One ride in a 740il as a passenger and driver was all it took. The 740il has it al. For a large (and I mean large)sedan, the 740 rides like no other vehicle. Super smooth, powerful engine, nearly perfect transmission and by far, the ultimate ride with extremely goo handling. Compared to Benz, Lexus, Infinity etc. nothing really compares. It's gorgeous inside and out but be prepared for big ticket maintenance costs. Nothing is cheap on a BMW!!

After careful, detailed research for a high performance car that is safe and big enough for my family and 3 additional adult passengers - I decided on the 740i SPORT. The SPORT is the key to add the performance and fun to a great automobile. This car is better than I had hoped it would be. Extremely fun to drive (auto or manual), handles great, and extremely comfortable for long trips.

This car is absolutely fun to drive. It handles extremely well. We had looked at the Lexus and Mercedes. The Lexus was more of a softer ride and the Mercedes was in the same ball park with the Beemer, but the cost was extremely more. Even if the Mercedes was priced around the same, we would have still went with the Beemer.

I have just recently purchased a 750il. The performce and handling of the car is impecable. The car has ample amount of room for the passengers as well as trunk space. The only downfall of the car is its gas milage. I have been averaging 12-13 mpg. I am certanly going to to buy the new 760li when it arrives.

Over the past few weeks, I have test driven them all...from the MB S class to the Lexus and finally the BMW. Performance and handling wise, the BMW is unsurpassed. The Mercedes is a little more luxurious, but it felt "heavy" while the BMW just responded to whatever you asked it to do. The 740il delivers performance while bathing the owner with luxury. I agree with most that the nav. system could be improved upon...and they did it with the 2002 5 & 7 series. BMW is on top of their game and should be on top of your list as well. This is my 2nd BMW and will not be my last! Do yourself a favor...get one too!
