This is the best car I have ever owned. Never have had any mechanical issues. My Camry just keeps going, never going to die. The paint/clear coat is peeling badly. Alas it is time to say goodbye. It will cost more to smog with repairs than car is worth.

My brothers toyota camry is at 345,000 miles and still runs with no major problems. Very little maintenance over the past few years. Did have an engine rebuild at 165,000 miles because of recall. The best car my family has ever owned.

Over engineered and over built. replaced engine and transmission after 230k not due to any failure but for peace of mind. This was mu dream car back when I was in high school and it first came out. I would rebuild it like new if I can find the right parts. Still running strong and reliable at 273k. A real champ.

This was my first car and honestly it was great. The car lasted up to 230,000 miles, and the only reason it died was because I had given it to my irresponsible younger brother who had driven it for 30,000 miles without getting a single oil change... even after that with a huge knock under the hood, it would still start up and drive down the road. PROS: 1. The transmission was great. The car had no problem going 100 mph... it actually had a better ride going faster. 2. It ALWAYS started. Most reliable car ever. 3. Awesome sound system for a stock radio. My bass bumped better than a custom speaker. 4. It was okay to slack a little on oil changes. Now for the negatives... 1. Electrical problems. The cigarette lighter stopped working as well as one of the power outlets. It was not a blown fuse either, they just stopped working for no rhyme or reason. 2. CD player would skip when hitting the brakes or taking a right turn. 3. The cassette player would spit a tape out when the car was cold. No problems once it started heating up. 4. Easily weighed down/bottoms out. Fitting five people in the car and driving over a small bump would be the scariest thing ever. 5. Constant minor repairs. I've had quite a few with this car out of the six years that I drove it... Repairs: 1. Struts. I think I replaced them three or four times. I would drive through a massive pothole and the stuts would be fine... but then one day out of random, they'd be s***. 2. Replaced the timing belt at 180k. It was previously replaced at 90k. 3. EXHAUST. I forget the amount of times I had gotten a random whole in my exhaust pipe. I remember it happening to me very frequently. 4. It had another on&off problem before I had given the car to my brother where I would start it and the RPMS would go very low causing the car to stall out. I have no idea why this happened, but I would give it a few mins and it would be good to go again. It would do this a couple of times every few months or so. All in all, a really reliable car. I still see them everywhere in 2015 and there is a reason. That car had taken me everywhere and I beat it up... but it always drove.

Bought one with 170k, sold it with 199k, bought another with 192k, sold it with 219k miles. THESE HAVE A HORRIBLE RESALE VALUE, I did not make any money on either of them, probably because not many people want a camry that is manual. But it has great power, 0-60 was 7.4 seconds for me on my first one, my second one was a bit slower because it felt beat on. Topped out the first one at 131 mph but blew a whole in the exhaust doing that lol. Both of mine had 1 common problem, the rear sway bar link bushing go bad and make a horrible clunking sound. Was impossible to change them because the bolts get rusted up and break if you touch them.

I bought my 1999 Camry V6 manual transmission brand new and enjoyed very much the car. Good performance, reliability, and gas miles. Last year, I changed the clutch. With 102K original miles, I am doing minor body work, new alloy rims, replacing wood trim in dashboard and installing a trunk spoiler. I am planning to keep my car unless someone gives me an offer that I can't refuse.

I bought a 99 Camry about 5 years ago that had 160,000 miles, hoping to get a couple of years out of it. It now has 330,000 miles and still going strong, very very reliable, starts every time, I do nothing to it except regular oil changes. Only thing wrong with it is that when it rains then freezes you cant get the doors open, so the door handle broke off. Minor thing overall. The engine and transmission work well and just a reliable, if plain car. Would recommend it to anyone.

I loved my 1988 Camry - cried when it got totaled out at 387K miles. Bought a 1999 Toyota Camry 6cyl - 5 speed (never owned an automatic). Love this car! It now has 266K miles on it - just regular maintenance - brakes/batteries (Arizona weather kills batteries), and tires. Had the timing belt changed every 75K. The car drives great, runs smooth, and I've never had a problem. Drove it from Phoenix to LA at 85 mph - no issues, drove from Phoenix to Vegas - no issues. Would drive this car across country! It may be a little sun faded, but still looks great and drives fantastic. I know a stick isn't for everyone, but I love it. UPDATE: Just passed 300K! Still going strong - just drove from Phoenix to Los Angeles - 85mph - not an issue - Going for 400K

I love my camry!

I drove a 1991 Toyota pickup from 2005 to ~2011; after that I was given my grandmother's 1999 Toyota Camry. At the time it only had around 43k miles on the odometer. Since then I've put around 30k on the odometer; driving to and from work/school in Connecticut as well as driving from South Carolina to CT and back 5 times. It still runs great; the engine air filter is miraculously still clean and in good shape despite being 3 years old. The only problem I've been having lately is the motors for both the front driver and passenger windows dying...although that's likely due to age. All in all, it's a great car and I bet mine will last for years to come.

Reliable, but plain grandma car

I drove this car up until a few weeks ago. It was in the family since new. It was very reliable, and never broke down on me until the very end. It lasted until 190K miles, but it probably could have lasted longer if I had spent money to investigate the check engine light. Then one day the head gasket blew and the engine overheated and that was the end of it. Before that, all normal maintenance repairs for its age. A very boring, plain vehicle but if you're looking for a reliable mid size sedan with reasonable acceleration power, this is for you.

This is an extremely popular car (even in 2012) and I understand why. Comfortable interior, great visibility, fine gas mileage. The fuel gauge went out on mine at 140,xxx miles, inconvenient but the light does still come on when low, so it works out. First Toyota, so the high revving is something I had to get used to. Soft ride, will probably last another 20 years!

I stumbled upon my 1999 v6 American Edition Camry in early 2007 with 88k. Previous to that I had never considered a Toyota, but the deal was right. Since then I have put 110k of my own miles on it. It has seen me through college, marriage and the birth of our two kids. Since day one, I have considered it the most boring-looking car I have ever set eyes on, and my wife refers to me as "grandpa" when I'm in it. Looks notwithstanding, I LOVE my Camry. The v6 is enough to keep driving interesting and the reliability can't be beat. The mph is acceptable: I get 26 mpg no matter what I do. Highway, city, petal to the floor, or with my wife and kids in the car: 26 mpg.

I bought this car back in '06 when I was still in high school, with about 89,000 miles on it. 5 years later and it has 185,000 with no signs of stopping. There have been a couple repairs I have had to do including a costly sensor replacement at the dealership which ran about $1,300. That was back in '09. Then earlier this year, the car wouldn't start and I needed to buy a new air compressor at about $300...All in all a reliable vehicle that has not needed any other major services. The V6 has plenty of power for everyday driving (which here in SW Florida can be both fast-paced and aggravating) and I don't see any reason why this car won't make it to 200k and beyond.

This is the second Camry I have had in 19 years. The first was a 1992 LE 4 cylinder (remember those?). Anyway, I liked it so much for work (outside sales) that I bought a new one in 1999. I have driven it ever since. It now has 140,700 miles on it with NO signs of giving up. I am in outside sales and believe me, I drive it. Despite it now has it's slight dings and scratches the paint is still beautiful after all these years. It runs smoooooooth as can be thanks in part to using 5-30 Mobile 1 since day one...not a drop burns, not drip anywhere. Mechanically, this thing has run like a top for 12 years and counting. No major repairs.

Decent Japanese built vehicle which does everything a family requires from a vehicle well. Doesn't really impress me greatly in any aspect but never seems to disappoint either. I just purchased it with low miles 60k and it gets real world 28/23 mpg hwy/city. Not too impressive highway mileage but great city economy for a vehicle it's size. Driver's seat not really up to American comfort standards. 2.2l 4 cyl. lacks a little power off the line but has plenty for uphill pulls on the highway.

What a car....

I bought mine back in the Summer of 1999. I owned a 1992 model prior to this. Said another way, I have driven 2 Camry's over the last 19 years. Both were absolutely excellent. I was lucky, this one was built in Japan. The car has been flawless. 137K miles on it now. The AC, Power Windows have never gone down. The original Panasonic Battery lasted 8.5 years. I finally put a starter in it last year at 11.5 years of age. This car, without a doubt, has been the most reliable and competent vehicle I have ever owned, bar none. It's one of those models that if if you can find a clean, well-maintained one. BUY IT. What it lacks in appeal it more than makes up for in reliability.

When I purchased this car in 2002 it had 35,000 mile --I added a rear spoiler and wow! What a dream of a car!! It has style, comfort, great ride and super options. I clean and maintain it regularly--it gets rave compliments by service mechanics and strangers on the street. One mechanic said that it will last forever! I trust the vehicle to take me anywhere and I always admire its handsome style. It makes me a very proud owner as I constantly "check it out" when passing store windows!! Purchased this car less than a year ago with 120,000 mi. on it. It now has 131,000 mi. It was well maintained by previous owner and it shows. Car rides and feels smooth and tight if you didn't look at the odometer you would think it had half the miles it actually does. Absolutely no problems so far . Gas mileage is just okay...low 20's in commuting traffic and very high 20's on the highway. It rides very smooth and quiet at highway speeds and is very comfy. Acceleration is not bad for a 2.2 L 4 cyl , enough for normal driving situations. It uses less than a quart of oil every 3,000 mi. Overall I am impressed with this car and would recommend it to others.

I'm looking for other cars in case this one just break down but so far I've haven't had any problems! I had this care since 99 and I LOVE it. The speakers are great and nothing is more reliable. My 1999 Camry 2.2 that I got this year is about to have 258,xxx miles. Head gaskets have never been replaced! It still runs great even the way I drive it! I've added a short ram intake, strut tower bar and new plugs and wires. The strut tower bar is highly recommended and the intake makes it about twice as loud and deep, great sound. The check engine light comes and goes but it's never anything major. Both driver side windows are out, I wish all cars had crank windows.

My dad bought this car with 10,000 on it back in 2003 and then put 212,000 miles on it. We took care of the basics and it still runs exactly like new maybe better. I got it and put some performance parts on (cold air intake, racing plugs, new struts etc.) This car has never let either of us down and if the odometer did not say it had 218,000 miles on it, no one driving it or riding in it would think any thing else but it was a new car.

2nd owner, 1st had to replace engine due to oil sludge problem. 65k on new engine and its sludging up again. 3.0 Toyota engine is worse than an old jag V6 and is part of a settled class action lawsuit (to late for me though), terrible fuel mileage, boring styling, coma inducing character. Only thing it does well is blow really cold air. Toyota's PR people should win an academy award or run for congress with the acting and lies to consumers about Toyota build quality.

For the first 4 years of ownership the Camry seemed to hold up well. On the fifth year, things started to fall apart. The rubberized door handle started to separate from the door switch module. Then the radio went out. Then the car started to smoke when starting up in the morning. This was probably due to the slug problem. The oil was changed regularly at 4000 too. Then the metal clip on the gas door broke, keeping the door from opening. Finally the clearcoat on the hood started to chip off. This after doing regular washing and waxing. What did hold up well was the material on the seats and the had no rattles. But that wasn't enough to keep it for another year.

Purchsed from a friend in 2002 with 90k miles on it. I just turned 222k. 2 timing belts, 1 water pump (easy change when doing timing belt so did it just to be safe), 1 tune up, new struts, few sets of brakes and tires, that is it. I can't kill this Camry no matter how hard I try. Is it boaring, yes. Is it slow, yes. Is it the most reliable car I have ever owned...hands down. IF you are looking for a car for your teenaged kids, look no farther. As much as I would like to move on, I am determined to drive the Camry until something major goes wrong with it. My luck I will be writting another update in 2 years when I have 270k on it. GM, take notes, this is how a car should be built!!!

I just traded the Camry I've had for 8 years on a Lexus and cried when I said goodbye to it. I averaged 29mpg in 50/50 city/hwy driving and hit 33mpg on flat hwy. Incredibly reliable. The body style w/ spoiler and alloys still looks fresh. Interior was roomy and well designed. There's a lot to this major-model Camry has been cost-reduced out of the newer ones. If you're on a budget and need stylish, reliable, spacious transportation, find a well-maintained 98-02 Camry.

We got it as a used rental car in late 1999 and have driven it to death ever since. It now has almost 150000 miles and we've never had a big problem. We change oil regularly. Only repairs were the right window motor and we did all the belts etc. My husband drives it daily around 50-60 miles. We will drive it til it drops.

I lent it to My son the 2nd time he had ever driven it & had a head on collision with it .Didn't understand front wheel drive vs rear wheel technology . Its a paperweight now but no one was hurt Thank God . All the doors still shut & work perfectly . but there engine is shoved all the way into the fire wall . The car never broke down, i had no problems with it. Now it has 192000 miles. It does have a 18gallon gas tank which i found to be a bit too big. but its okay. Now i drive a 350z Overall upgrade from the 99 camry. but the camry did very well the last 2 years.

I absolutely love this car! I waited a year before I decided to post a review, because I wanted to be sure my opinion was reliable. For one, this car has never given me ANY problems except for having to get a new battery about a month after I purchased it...which was mostly the dealership's fault for having an old recharged one in the car. The only thing I've replaced is the tires...never stalls, idles and drives smoother than my mother's 2005 Saturn ....I love this car and when I am ready to trade it in, it will definitely be for another Camry!

This is my first used car in over 13 years. The economy killed me and didn't have a choice in getting a used car. I found a 1999 with 266,000 miles on it (2,300) and pampered its entire life. The car looks really nice and has had everything replaced and maintained. It cruises PERFECTLY like a brand new car at 80mph. All power options and AC work perfectly. I was worried I would be driving a beater... NOT THE CASE! Nice car!

No lie....I have 242,665 miles on my car and I am not embarrassed to drive it. I bought it with 112k miles on it from a private owner. It has been maintained well (oil changes, routine maintenance, etc.) but I have rarely put any other money into the vehicle. It drives down the highway almost like a new car. I would highly recommend purchasing this year Camry, as long as it has been taken care of. I will always be Toyota loyal after my experience (previous American-car only driver). What American car would ever even come close this mileage and reliability? Exactly! If I can get 500K, maybe I can get that new 2010 Prius I have been desperately wanting. :)

I always keep my cars 100k and longer. This is the first Toyota I've bought and the first time to own a car that is low cost to maintain. Very little goes wrong. With the energy crunch, I've lowered my speed to 60-65 and my mileage has gone from 30mpg on the hwy to 35mpg hwy. It has always maintained 24-25mpg in town. My only complaints are: the headlights; I've changed the relay a few times but their light intensity is still weak; 2. Seating comfort: I'm tall and thin and I feel like I'm sitting on a park bench. Compared to an American car, the comfort level is inferior. Maybe the newer models are better with this. The low maint. and repair cost outweigh this issue.

This car runs better now than when it had 20,000 miles. It held its value and I am always being asked if I want to sell it and I can't let it go yet anyway. Great bang for the buck especially in this economy. Buy one you'll love it; this 4 cylinder blows away many American 4 and 6 cyl of the same year. You wont regret it.

I bought Toyota Camry in 1999. It ran ok in the first 5 years. Then I had to fix it at least twice a year (not including service or oil change). In average I spent $1500 on repair each year. I only drove 11000 miles and have changed most of stuff in the car already. Finally, I decided to sell this car. I really should have sold it earlier. I will never buy from Toyota anymore.

Bought this used car at 111K for $4.15K as my second car for wife's schooling. The previous driver is a student, never did the services correctly, I did the 90K service and timing belt change, etc. Changed 4 tires. Now still needs to get all the suspension system (approx $15K) replacement. In any event, Toyota is pretty smooth, quiet and reliable. It will never die on you if you take any sort of reasonable care. I trust Toyota, I trust my car.

I bought this road marvel as a replacement for a 2005 Kia Spectra EX, that had a host of problems on it. I have loved this car ever since I bought it. It gives me great gas mileage & the engine runs so smooth and quiet that you cannot even hear it when stopped for traffic. It had a smooth-drive suspension system before they got all worn out. Today, there is a problem with my tyres that gives me less than 30 mpg overall. I used to get an average of 33 mpg (combined mileage) but these days even 25 mpg is a miracle! I was advised that there is something wrong with my tyres, alignment, balancing or something like that and once I get it fixed, it's gonna b okay!

I bought this car new and have had few problems. Replaced CD player under warranty due to skipping. Clunking sound in rear has been present since new and I've still not found the source but it's tolerable. Very well built, smooth ride GREAT mileage w/ 29+ MPG incl. many central Pa. mountain miles. Nearly 150,000 miles now without a mechanical issue. Just replaced the timing belt and rear struts, the first maintenance other than normal brakes and oil changes. I've been using amsoil synthetic and changing on 20,000 mile intervals since new with no problems. Now starting to puff a faint blue smoke immediately upon startup when cold. I'll run it until it dies and hopefully buy another toyota.

I purchased this car with 276k miles on it two years ago, and it has not failed me yet with nearly 315k on it. All I've had to replace (aside from normal things like brake pads and oil changes) is the alternator belt. The six speaker stereo sounds great and can produce low bass and high treble. The quality of the materials used is unsurpassed, all the dash and trim still fits with no creaking or popping out of place. The v6 engine is smooth as butter, so quiet it's hard to hear it running. The exterior is a little bland but is also conservative and clean.

I can't say this car is without problems, however at nearly 220K miles it is still going strong and I hope it lasts me till 300K. I bought it new. Replaced a main brake cylinder & front struts under warranty, changed oil every 5K, timing belt at 90K and 180K, water pump at 180K, brake pads every 40-50K. Second shift solenoid went out around 190K miles ($280), rear seal small leak at 190K miles, an A/C compressor noise at 2500+ RPM around 200K. Alarm gets triggered if the car is left out in the sun for 2-3 hrs. A speedometer shows 5% higher speed than it is (you are doing only 76 mph when it says 80) with factory tires.

After 7.8 years I finally had to replace the Panasonic factory battery. I've replaced the front brakes twice, rears once, synthetic oil (Mobil 1 5/30) since it was new. One set of tires. The paint is peeling on the rear spoiler and is faded on the rear bumper. The rest of the car has so many dings and scratches a new coat of paint would be nice. But, then again, it is almost eight years old. Factory CD player skips a lot but the radio still sounds good. Driver door cloth is peeling in one spot. Sure seemed like an excellent used car at the time I bought it for my mom, exactly one year ago. At only 63K miles it smokes when cold (valve stem seals), clunks on small bumps (strut mounts), all the painted plastic has faded (bumpers, mirrors, door handles), exterior door handle falling off (cheap plastic). I should have spent thousands less and bought American. Extremely disappointed in this smoking rattle-trap. There are TSBs on the problems we have, so these are not maintenance issues - I regret ever buying this car - can't sell it without doing a valve job at ONLY 63K MILES! NOT a solid car.

I bought this Camry in late 2002. It had only 15,000 miles, & leather seats & a power driver's seat. Nearly 4 years later, it's my favorite car ever. Although my 16-year old daughter gets teased by her friends that it's a "mom's car", I repeat over & over: "It's reliable, gets 30 mpg, it's easy & fun to drive & the (leather) seats are comfortable." I've only done regular oil changes & put a new battery in it. It now has 64,650 miles & I've put just 7,300 on it this the last year, but will drive it even more as I am a new "mystery shopper". It's my 2nd Camry & hasn't disappointed me once.

Buying my Toyota Camry was one of the best investments that I have ever made. I love the gas mileage that it gets. I get 28 mpg on the average driving it everyday to work. On the highway I get 32+. The sound system is awesome!! It has 102,000 on it now and it drives great with no problems. I am faithful with my maintenance schedule. The only thing that I have had to pay out for is a new set of tires and rear struts as the car would sometimes bottom out in the rear with 4 adults in it. It wasn't costly though and one brake light. The car is so quiet and drives smooth. I highly recommend it.

The vehicle is well maintained and serviced, but at 188,000 I've had to replace transmission seals, gaskets, and there is an engine oil leak the continues to come back and now the power steering rack is leaking. It's starting to get very sluggish, too. I would still purchase another Camry, but this one has been disappointing.

The 99 Toyota Camry is a great car for me so far. I have had no problems with it. The car rides very nice and I think it will last me through college. The only problem I have is the suspension is noisy when it goes over rough bumps. I am 6'4 and I really feel comfortable because the seat adjusts back/forth and up/down. It's a great car and I have read great reviews on this car!

I purchased this certified car in Dec. 2002. At the beginning it was good. After I had problems with leaking water pump, transmission problems and last huge problem it start lose engine oil. Dealer made some repairs, but it was getting worse and worse. Last time 2 months ago oil level was below lower mark after 1000 miles!!! Dealer hold car for a week, replaced rings, recondition the engine head, bearings etc. Now, after 250 miles it lose 30% of oil. So, I need to go to dealer again.

I've had my Camry approximately 3 1/2 years and it's the best car I've ever had. If you want reliability, its there. If you want extras, it's not bad. If you want comfort, it does the job pretty well. If you want performance, it can handle pretty well. For economy, it is pretty good. The value retension seems to be good. All around, this car is a pretty solid buy! I know what my next car will be. Another Toyota.

Having owned nothing but Japanese, I had high expectations from this Camry. It definitely hasn't let me down in mechanical quality, but I can tell the quality of some interior features and window moldings, weather strips, and other plastic/rubber parts are inferior to Honda and Mazda. But it is definitely more comfortable and quiet, so it's a trade-off. If yours failed on you, it's human error. Don't take care of it and like any car, it will perish. (it just takes longer to kill it than a Detroit product)

If you like driving, as I do, this is not a car for you. No throttle response, no steering feel, terrible (soft) suspension. Makes me ask "Am I actually driving." I take corners at 40-50 mph, and still no thrill. This is a boring car. Only consider it if you absolutely hate driving or do not like cars at all. If you like driving, or think a car should be responsive and a little sporty, go for the Accord.

Great car for the money.

I bought this car used in October '04. 92000 miles on it. I paid $8250 for it and I think I got ripped off. I guess overall it's been a decent car, but don't listen to all those reviews about Toyota's reliability. Every car has its faults. Two days after I bought the car the check engine light came on; I took it to three mechanics, none could figure out the problem. After 10000 miles it's still on and off. I've had the starter go bad, the motor knocks like crazy at times, and I have various other electrical problems. The front struts make popping sounds, but they're factory and I've yet to change them. However I believe these faults are due to a previous owner's ignorance.

Here is what I've replaced during my 6 years of ownership: 1.) Circuit board regulating the airflow and AC 2.) Entire Driver window motor assembly (from a Toyota Dealership). 3.) Rust on side of door 4.) Power door locks does not function from time to time. I've owned over 12+ cars in my lifespan, and this is the 1st car that I've found myself facing with these items that should have lasted a lot longer.

A quiet, competent, comfortable safe and dependable ride. Has decent performance and economy, although 6 cylinder in family Avalon is better overall performer. 4 cylinder has adequate power and is bulletproof. Would drive it to the left coast and back tomorrow as is. No major issues - replaced orig Michelins at 72 thousand - still have original brakes, battery with no issues.

It is fun to drive, comfortable and gets great gas mileage while being immaculately reliable no wonder Toyota will become the largest car manufacturer in the world in few years. This is trully the best car on the market. I bought a used one with 40k miles and drive it for 2 years now. Not a single problem with it. This car is so reliable that you dont have to do anything just get some gas and change oil regularly. THAT's it. It is very quiet and sometimes I am not sure if the engine is on or not. It is pretty fast too. I test this car to its limits and it never fails me. It can compete with many sports cars and will lose just a lit bit. I raced a Lincoln MarkVIII which was ahead of me about one body length at 80 mph. In other words its pretty fast. The driving experience is excellent. Its like riding a dream. After all the hype about this car and that, all cars smell, drive, look, and act similarly after a few years. That being said, I can tell you without reservation, this has been one fine car. I now have 61,000 miles on this car. I drive it daily in Atlanta traffic. This car has and continues to deliver everything you come to expect in a Toyota. I have only replaced the Front Brakes. I can't seem to wear the rears out, replaced the tires, and use synthetic oil with every oil change. Score? Perfect. It has never broken down. It has a better AC than Honda and is roomier. It won't turn heads but you won't call for a tow either. Next time, buy a 4-cyl Camry. It's my 2nd.

Unfortunately I was recently hit by a Semi truck on the Interstate at 62 mph but my Camry saved my life! Talk about a car that held it together. For safety sake, this is a car that I trust my life on. My next car and the one after that will be a Camry. What a car!

We bought this new in 1999 and currently have 67000 miles. This has been a very reliable car for us. It drives nice, the trunk is big and it gets decent gas mileage. The only problem I had was with the rear retractable seat belts. Both left and right broke within a week. With two kids in carseats, that's NOT OK. And of course it was just past the expiration of the warranty so it costed $270.00. Mechanically, it has been problem free. I replaced brakes for the first time at 60K and tires not much before that.

My daughter had a side impact collision in our 99 Camry. The car held up very well and I credit the exterior design for saving my husbands life. However, I am disapointed with the side airbags. The air bags did not open all the way. The air bag looked like a cloth bag only partialy out. If the air bag would have opened, up my husband would not have been hurt.

I purchased this car for $8500 and it had only 34,000 miles. The engine was clean and it ran perfect. The tires need replacing (stock tires), the interior needed some cleaning up, and the flex-pipe for the exhaust was replaced (covered under warranty); but other than that the car is very sound. It has a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with 5-speed manual transmission. At first I was wanting the automatic trans but with the high gas prices and the extra oomph with the manual, I'm glad I actually purchased it with the 5-speed.

I have had my 99 Camry for two years now. I bought the car with 56,000 miles on it and I purchased a 100,000 mile warranty, which I only used once on a $300 repair(I paid $1200 for the warranty). I would say that I am fairly rough on my car but it has withstood the test. My Camry now has 106,000 miles on it and there is not one thing, repair wise, that I can complain about. Some people say that it is a luxury car but I wouldn't go that far. It definately is more luxurious than other cars in its class though and has a much quieter ride than Accord or Altima.

I bought the Camry in April of 2002 and have had no major problems at all. The car is great on gas milage and has adequate power on city streets. Besides normal wear and tear the only issue i have had is the passanger door window motor which was inepensive to replace. Only complaints are that the rear cup holders are easily broken, that the car rides low or the suspension is too giving that the car scrapes its undercarriage alot on bumps, and that the stereo has no lights on the buttons to see at night; only glow in the dark stickers.

I bought my Camry about 6 years ago and I love it but I have always had a problem with the CD Player. When I would brake, the CD that would be currently playing would skip until I fully stopped. Just this year my check engine light came on and went off and did that for a few months. I thought it was an electrical problem because the car drove fine and I was linking it to my CD player. The electrical tests checked out fine so I then needed to go get the oil changed. It turned out that my engine oil gelled all in my engine. I was also told there is nothing that can stop this problem and it can happen again in another few

When my Camry was less than a year old, it was in the shop for a 59 day stretch when a defective part had to be replaced. I got a free loaner (Corolla ...) and they paid my two payments, plus gave me the platinum warranty. Since then, it's been a pleasure. I for one think there is plenty of power in it considering it is a 4 cylinder. I never have to merge below freeway speeds. That's good enough for me. The brakes have never been as good as they should be. They work fine, but they shutter and ocassionally grind, and nothing they've ever done has fixed this. The suspension rattles in the city, and is a bit loose.

The car is highly reliable. I have had no major problems with it at all. Not even minor ones like power doors not workig. I have driven it almost 15K miles a year and it has performed without a hitch. The 2.2L 4-cyl. engine is a bit low powered especially if you have to accelerate quickly or if you have the full complement of 5 occupants. For most normal uses that I have put it to this has not been much of a problem. The mileage provided is excellent ( 30 mi. per gallon on freeways). This car is great for someone who wants their car to retain value. After 5 yrs my car still commands almost half its buying price with options. Overall highly recommended.

I got the 5-speed V6 version of the Camry used with 45k on it... having put nearly 20k on it myself in a little more than a year, I've only had to replace the front brake pads and a tie rod. It's a great car, looks good in dark blue with the alloy wheels. The engine is smooth and quiet below 3k rpm but above 4 it starts making a nice sound and a lot of power. Only problems are a bad shifter, a tacky pattern on the seats and the suspension, which could be a little bit tighter.

This is an easy maintaining, driver/passenger friendly, quiet, reliable, non-fancy type of car. Many weaknesses can be improved by upgrading different part. Major complains are the ABS brake, OE tires, suspension, and lack of power when having more than 2 adult passengers. I would suggest upgrade wheel size and switch to good tire brands, and stiffer suspension and use better brake parts. If considering a 97-99 Camry, I would recommand go for a V6 for better perfomance.

I thought the Camary was going to be a good car having owned a Celica previously. The car is making clunking noises from the rear. Having taken it into the dealership for them to check it out they said there is NOTHING wrong with it and they heard nothing...hard to believe. It is starting to make a noise in the front left wheel now. I am looking into a Nissan Altima for my next purchase.

/tis car is like a good appliance, boring but you never have to worry about it. In 5 years we've had to replace the clutch and tires but nothing else. Runs in -40 weather without a block heater. I figure it has at least anither 5 years in it.

I have had my Camry for 5 years now and I just brought it to a mechanic for the first time at 81,000 miles. That was only for brake pads and tires (which until now had not been changed since I bought the car with only 30 miles on it). I love this car and I feel very safe driving my daughter around in it since it has steel doors. This is my first Toyota and I will never buy anything but Toyota from now on. I love it. I know it is not the fastest car around but it is very reliable. The only complaint I have is seeing everyone has one, it is hard to find my car in a parking lot.

I have had numerous problems with this car. The check engine light keeps going on and off. Numerouse things have been identified and "fixed" at very high costs. It still does it. The brakes needed replacing at 41000 miles, At the same time a front tie rod needed replacing even though I live in the city and do not drive on rough roads. The CD player skips. I bought the car for its quality, but they seem to have left that part out.

The breakes squeak and the pick-up is not fantastic. All the cars around me a speeding passed.... But those are the only things that bothers me. Other than that, it is a super smooth ride, tremendous amount of space for 'things' in the trunk, great sound, comfortable seats, and all together a fun ride!!!

I have been very impressed with the purchase of my Camry LE back in June of 1999. The car is 4 years old today and rides just like the day I picked it up four years ago. The OEM General Tires were replaced by Toyota within the first two months of ownership. The General Tires were defective and replaced with Michelin XW4's. The car is very quiet on the road and the reliability has been flawless.

This is an OK car for its value. The engine isn't that powerful. I haven't had any major problems with my car so far. The handeling is good. The acceleration is ok, but when there are 4 people on board you can feel that the car is "working very hard" to run. The braking doesn't feel so well. The OE tires suck. The front bumber is too close to the ground; I always hit the curve when I park. The suspention is too soft. The interior is simple and cheap. The back seats are comfortable. The engine bay is ugly.

I was looking for an Impala, but as soon as I saw this camry, I was bought. It has everything that I wanted, like sunroof, alloy wheels smooth ride and a knock out punch form the V6 and a very good music system with cassette and cd. Realiability and ride quality are unbeatable as for any Toyota. Although handling is not quite stiff, but its very much accurate and more than sufficient for turning with 10 to 20 above speed limit on freeway exit ramps. I love this car.

The camry has been a good car--once we got rid of those General tires that slid into corners and replaced them with some Yokohama Aegis touring tires. My main complaint is the low gas mileage (average around 24) and the paint job. The paint is coming off the front grill and the front bumper. It is flaking off all over the place. Not the quality I expected from Toyota. Mechanically I haven't had many problems. The wiper motors seem to have gotten messed up by an ice storm though.

I have had my '99 Camry for almost 3 1/2 years now & have almost 35,000 miles on it. I have never had any problems with my Camry & I am extremely satisfied. There are many mid-size family cars out there, but only few meet the high level of reliability that Toyota has put into this car. The only car that i like as much as this car is the Honda Accord. On the other hand, one thing that lacks with the Camry its engine. The engine could use more horsepower & umph. Also the quality of the components is not as good as its strongest competitor, the Honda Accord. But overall, I would definitely suggest the Camry as one of the best cars on the road.

After driving for 3 years+ and around 38K Mileage. I have to fix: 1) Car paints 2) Air flow sensor 3) Air fuel sensor 4) Oxygen sensor 5) Engine control unit and the last 3 part happened in two months after the 36000 mile coverage expired. It cost me R600+ to fix the above problem. I doubt Toyota is that reliable as it claimed.

I had previously owned a '91 Camry, so I convinced my wife, and dedicated American car company customer, to drive a '99 when she needed another car. She was hooked in about 30 seconds. We spent an afternoon driving '99 Camry's, and she wouldn't even consider another car after that. We had driven such cars as the Saturn L series and Pontiac GrandAm. She was set on one of them, but after driving the Camry, they weren't even a consideration! We even drove the Nissan Maxima and the Honda Accord, and she strongly preferred the Camry.

This has been an excellent family car. With the exception of a weather seal around the window on the drivers door, a couple very minor trim problems all repaired under warrenty and one recall (cruise control) that was repaired while I waited, I have had no problem with this car. Mine is a V6 with a 5 sp. manual (rare) and is a great performer. It is not a true sports sedan ie BMW but it aint bad. My teen age, son bless his heart, reports that it will do 0-60 in the 6 sec. range. After 68000+ miles I still have the orignal brakes. I usually take it to the dealer for service and wait for it and I am back on the road in a little more than an hour. We love it!!!

We bought the Camry to facilitate the needs of our four driver family. I think I got a good deal on it because it had been sitting on their lot for a couple months and was not moving because it's a manual 5 speed. I made a low bid and they called me back a month later. I can't believe how much I love this car. It's simply the best car I've ever owned and drives like a dream. The only thing I can compare it to is the BMW 320i I test drove 25 years ago. I loved my old Saab 99 but I think this even surpasses it. The previous owner mounted 16" 5 spoke wheels and Michelin 16/55/215 tires. It corners like it's on rails and the 4 cyl engine is very quick and gave 31 mpg on the last fill up.

I have had noticed that if it goes over a bump and you apply the brakes at the time, they just dont work like for a second or two. I was expecting Toyota quality, but what I got was a lemmon. The brakes vibrate violently when I stop quickly, and all four struts make a rattling noise (I was told this is a manufacturers defect). I have also had numerous other small problems as well. Knowing what I know now, I would not have purchased this car. It is smooth and quiet on the interstate though.

I'm a Realtor and drive constantly. Between 25-30K a year. Love the car except I've had to replace the brakes about every 10,000 miles. I've talked with 3 brake stores and all say that is a problem on this year and model. Something to do with the brake caliper not releasing all the way and constantly rubbing. I just take it back every few months for my new pads (under lifetime warranty) new calipers to fix it are around $1,000. Seats for sure and uncomfortable. Terrible adjustments. Other than the brakes I run this car in the ground and it just keeps going.

We leased this car in 1998, had to return it to the dealer in 2001, then bought it back in 2002 because we missed it so much.

It's a reliable car. Not the flashiest, fastest, or most comfortable. I drive it HARD and I the only thing I've had to replace in 70,000 miles is the brake pads (twice). I followed the maintenance schedule and have had no problems.

reliable but ...

It is a reliable car, I guess, since I haven't had any problem so far except that recently it is making some spueaking noise from one of the front suspension. However, the seats are extremely uncomfortable for its reputation(the best selling car?). In addition, the handling is far from precise. That makes its cornering highly dangerous sometimes. It gives no fun to drive. It is just a normal family car for people seaking no fun.

58K and i've done nothing

Great car. I've had no problem with comfort in front seats (i'm 5-7). Great room in back. More acceleration than I expected. More handling than I expected. Traded Acura Integra for car that could carry my 3 kids. Have done absolutely nothing in 58k miles and get 28 mpg. Huge trunk. Perfect fit and finish.

My camery has performed great, no problems, followed the maintaince program, the car has performed well both in traffic and over the road on trips, gas milage over 33 miles per gallon.

Car is outstanding, seats are awful.

Superb quality, everything in the interior is where it should be and works very easily, adequate power (4 cyl), but the seats ... did anybody actually sit in one for several hours before finalizing the seat design? I love the car but will never take it on a long trip because of the seat.
