I bought my 99 Avalon XLS for $800 with 214,000 miles and put about 15,000 on it in a year and I love it. I have only replaced the front strut mounts (common issue) and front sway bar links and bushings (parts are $48 all together) amongst regular maintenance items. The interior is all leather (door panels and all) and I always keep it clean because it's so good looking clean. It has a soft ride at all speeds, handles incredibly well for having such a soft ride, accelerates pretty strong (1MZFE V6 non-VVT) and the trans is also strong, still shifting like new at 232,000 miles. For entertainment it has the 7 speaker Harman-Motive system. 2 tweeters, 4 mids and 1 8" package tray mounted woofer and I believe all that is also on a factory amp. I upgraded all that with a JVC touch screen, Cerwin-Vega tweeters (I added two in the back), JBL mids, Audio Pipe crossovers, and a Power Acoustik 15" sub on 3200 watts. All easy to install and the car has well laid out audio placement. Cold AC and hot heat with great MPG. The only downside is you will get really attached to it and you won't be able to come up with a good reason to get a new car. Parts are plentiful and very affordable.

I bought my 1999 Toyota Avalon Platinum XLS in 2006. It had 99000 miles on it and this did not cause me alarm since I have had a Toyota Camry before. My Toyota Avalon now has 187,000 miles on it and is still running strong! I have had to put routine maintenence items, such as brakes, battery, tires, but other than that it is running like the day I bought it. I am looking at trading it off for something newer, not because I need to, just maybe wanting something newer. Trouble I am having is when I test drive other vehicles I am comparing it to my Avalon, so far all the "competitors" have lost. Gas mileage is still 24/28 hwy. Excellent choice and great car!

Incredible car! Soft ride, low maintenance, good mileage. Only complaint - after 13 yrs of a gray 86 Camry and 11 yrs of this silver 99 Avalon, I feel the need for a change. Could be midlife issues. I need something bright and irresponsible. But seriously, GREAT CAR! Fits all sizes of people and luggage. Surprisingly good mileage for its size and comfort and I highly recommend it. That's what makes it hard for me to give up.

Purchased with ~98,000 miles on it, put ~20,000 more on it over two years. In that time, I had no mechanical problems with it at all- the car might as well have been new. It's not the most exciting car to drive- I nicknamed mine the 'boringmobile'. Pros: extremely reliable, good mileage, Cons: suspension feels a little mushy and the handling is only adequate. But it's a sedan, not a sports car, so that's okay. Unfortunately, the car was totaled in a collision with a Chevy Tahoe. The Toyota engineering team does good work, I was not injured (nor was anyone in the Tahoe). I start looking for another Avalon this weekend.

So good, you will be bored...

There is no doubt this is an incredible vehicle. It is smooth, reliable and fast (for a daddy sedan). It has many creature comforts and even gets 26 mpg. hwy consistently on 87oct. I drive a Platinum Ed. XLS and mile for mile this car has been the best used vehicle I have purchased (read- least expensive to maintain for the ride quality). Purchased in late 08 for 5900- w/113k miles. Clean as a whistle this is proving to be quite the deal. The mid-life crises sport coup-loving man bemoans the dull exterior looks and cushy drive. This inner teen wants to buy an RSX or TC, but I can not justify selling such a great car. The practical man in me loves every boring bit of this machine.

Bought this car for my wife (5k-10k miles/year). Now it's my commuter car (25k+ per year; mostly highway but hard-driving miles). Getting high 20's gas mileage. Comfortable, very reliable, very stable (once I had struts & strut mounts replaced) - even at 70-85 mph. Perfect size (smaller than new Avalons) - small enough to get in & out wherever I need to go, big enough to be comfortable & feel safe. Currently 125k miles; I expect 200k+. The car is worth more to me than trade value. Back seat not huge, but not cramped. Large trunk. Strut mounts were the only significant non-wear repairs I have made. If you can buy a well-maintained one for cheap, do it. It will hold up.

Great and reliable vehicle. I drive 40k miles per year and only mechanical issue was to replace a starter once. I expect to get another 150k miles. One negative is I have had to replace the struts twice . I wish I had seen this page years ago as I had front noise for years that turned out to be the front strut holder that I finally had diagnosed and replace. Also the only safety issue is that the vehicle does not require you to put it in park first before you remove the key so that the vehicle could roll if you forget to put it in the park position.

I'm 6'7", needed lots of head and leg room, and got it the Avalon. It has all the get up and go I ever needed. Now that it's broken in at 140,000 miles, it gets 30 mpg on the highway; what a nice surprise. Maintenance costs have been half of our other vehicle, a 2003 Chrysler T&C.

Bought when 9 months old with 13,000 miles. Now have 118,000 and runs like new. 25 mpg commuting, 31 hwy. Replaced struts at 75,000, front brakes 75,000 and front brakes 115,000. That's the only maintenance besides timing belt at 90,000. I cannot get excited about paying $35+ for a new car that isn't any better than this. Hope to see over 200,000+ before I would consider changing.

Overall a pleasent car. Looking for a mechanically quite reliable midsize car. Very comfortable for long trips. 1. Leaky trunk-spot welding at the factory in the trunk area is the culprit. Fixed the wheel well area water leak, but still water collects in the left (under the tool container). 2. Front rattle relates to bad shocks and mounts. I will change them summer. Rear stabilizer bar link is making noise as well, needed to be changed. 3. Exhaust pipe on the front (flex pipe) is designed too low & combined with bad shocks on the front caused repair. 4. Cheap headlight. Cheap clear plastic. Wheel well s/b larger to take larger tires. I do feel tire width s/b 215.

Purchased used with 49000 miles, I've had no problems except a bad O-2 sensor. Wonderful ride, exceptional interior comfort, and a great sound system. My model is the Platinum Edition that came with a few extras including perforated leather seats, custom mats, and custom wheels. Looks better than most newer versions and a whole lot better than the current model. Reeks of quality.

Can't beat it.

Great car except for the springs and struts. At 25k miles the ride started to become very hard. Felt every bump. Complained to dealer and toyota. Their solution was too much air in tires. This while under warranty. Having springs and struts replaced at 55k miles. This should solve problem. Toyota will not be my choice to do the work. Taking to independent garage. Really believe the spring problem was known and ignored by toyota, since it only affected ride comfort, not handling. Also bought 2004 Avalon XL and the ride quality between the two is laughable. 2004 rides on air, 1999 inspects all defects in the road.

Purchased new in 1999, this car has been totally reliable. Have over 100,000 miles and uses no oil and engine is quiet. Had to replace the front struts at 70,000 (a common problem with Avalons-$600). Repaced front brake pads at 80,000, rear still good. Amazing. Easy to drive, quiet, roomy, and lots of power. Make sure you replace the timing belt at 90000 and car should run well for a long time. This is our fourth Toyota and one of the best.

This vehicle has been my best auto purchase to date considering I paid $15900 in the summer of 2002 with approximately 48000 miles after it came off a lease. It is very roomy and luxurious plus it gets decent gas mileage in Southern California traffic @ 23 mpg! On the freeway with no a/c it gets 29 mpg. The construction is very sturdy and it has only required normal replacement of 4 tires, battery, platinum spark plugs and brake pads. The only unusual replacement item was the coil pack which I installed myself becuse the dealer cost was outrageous. I'd recommend buying the Haynes repair manual to all!

Very disapointed with the value for the dollars spent. Have had numerous trips to dealer for faulty airbag light, driver window failing several times and dealer unable to diagnose, suggested fix was to replace motor in door with no guarantee that this was the true problem, now right rear window won't work, struts are bad, door molding fell off, side molding came loose, trunk flooded from rain, cost $200 to replace gasket at dealer, heated seats work poorly, wonderfully riding car but not worth the money, would not buy another Toyota.

I bought this car with 10,000 miles...now it has 85,000. Only repair was the A/C compressor replaced by the dealer - I paid labor only (after the warranty expired). Otherwise car is flawless, solid, comfortable and fun to drive. I have it serviced at the dealer (oil change $26.95) My only question is how long this will last. I might get 200,000 miles out of my Avalon, and I'd be happy to drive it that long. Why pay 1,000's more for another car? For what? Having BMW written on the hood just isn't worth it.

I have had to replace the O2 sensors and several related components. The front struts and strut towers. According to the dealer they were not warrant or extended warranty items. They were replaced about 50,000. I can understand the struts, but not the towers also. This vehicle has a huge rear seat, and a huge trunk, the trunk is big enough to carry lots of cargo

Just as a basketball team works best when there's great chemistry, the Avalon's combination of attractiveness, safety, comfort, reliability and resistance to depreciation really come together in a great package. I thought about buying an Avalon in 1998 - instead decided to save money and get a Sable. What was I, nuts??

I have had an oil leak, emergency brake that sticks and never has been fixed properly, in fact it has to be adjusted again after they installed a new one, I have a side mldg falling off, the windshield motors and linkage had to be replaced, I have had the air bag light stay on and come on while riding in the car. Right now their is a metal clanging noise in the motor. The car has only 27,000 miles on it. For the price paid for this car I would rate as a picece of junk. My problem is not with the dealer, it is the quality of the car, they talk about Toyota quality, not with this car.

We own a '96 Camry and a '99 Avalon XLS. In spite of having paid lots more for the Avalon it's pretty much a piece of junk compared to the (older!) Camry. The Camry is still tight and rattle free while the Avalon is a complete rattle trap with only 52,000 miles. The front door locking mechanism fell apart after 40,000 miles- out of warranty and cost $530.00 to repair. The right front rotor is worn out... we are trading it in on a Saab wagon next week as I'm tired of paying the repair bills. I am a stay at home mom and the car is driven back and forth to school, the grocery store, and church. Needless to say, we are extremely gentle on cars. I will never buy another Avalon.

The Toyota Avalon is a great car with a reasonable price. The car is reliable, comfortable and quiet. This car is sporty yet has plenty of room making a comfortable ride for the passengers. Has great pick-up speed and the stereo system is fabulous. I would never consider buying a different Sedan.

Best Car I have ever owned

I've had this car for approx. two years and I haven't seen one problem with it. I even got in an accident where someone rear-ended me at about 40 MPH. I noticed that the damage was fairly minimal. The acceleration is pretty good except I don't like how the car is approx. 300 pounds heavier than the Maxima. I also don't like how there is no available manual trans. with this car like the Maxima. Overall I giv this car a good rating.
