Bought this van thinking that i might get better gas mileage than my old Olds Sihlouette. Boy was I wrong. 18 on the highway, 14 in the city. I thought a tune up would help... Nope. did it myself the first time and figured I messed something up. Took it to a reputable shop and had them do it... nope. Took it on a long trip. Great on the straightaways, but if you climb a hill, you have fully loaded tractor trailers up your butt trying to pass you. Also have had to replace the knock sensor TWICE. Having said that, this is the most comfortable car I have ever had. Bells and whistles work great and cargo is good.

New from dealership the alarm was tempermental and had to be tweaked by a factory rep. You soon realize you are driving a "truck". Ours had annoying shimmy at highway speed. Although it had less than 60,000 miles when we decided to dump it. It needed an engine a knock sensor when sold. Starter motor, wheel bearings, electric window control panel (drivers door) and rusting exhaust were other repairs for mint condition vehicle. The clear lens cover for the turn signal popped off for no reason. AC needed recharged every year after 4 yrs. A stinko vehicle and inferior dealership do no make for a pleasant experience. Dealer damaged both rocker panels and blamed their new lift.

Happy owner

Bought the Villager new in 2000 as a leftover 1999 for a good price. You can put 7 people in the van, or their luggage, but not both at the same time. Its a little small. Its short on power too, but thats about all the negatives there are. The ride and comfort are great. Its been very reliable. I replaced the cvu joints at 80,000. The radio lights are intermitting. The throttle sticking is a very common problem. The solution is not that bad. Get a can of throttle body cleaner and spray around the edges of the flapper in the throttle body. Overall I'm well pleased.

Totaled the 1996 LS with 210K on it. Bought a "cheapie" donated 1999 for short term but love it inspite of the intermittantly sticky gas pedal. Have decided to keep her and put in new: irridium spark plugs and wires, rotor, cap, CV joints, front struts, rear shocks, Michellin Hydro Edge tires w/life time balance, timing belt, radiator hoses, thermostat, trans service and regularly change oil and filter. I want to put disk brakes in the back and looking for a "chip" to increase horse power. Am I a little nuts? Cheaper than new car payments yes?

Just bought the van from a private party. Had problems I was aware of at time of purchase. Replaced motor mounts, cracked windshield, brakes, plugs and rotor. Had a brief transmission slip. Air conditioning works great. Seems throttle body had some work done to it. Display on radio does not work, but radio does. Service Engine Soon light keeps coming on and off, Passenger rear window won't stay open. Driver window switch is intermittent on roll up. Driver floor mat won't stay flat. Driver rear view outside mirror seems to oscillate a bit while driving. Fuel econ is fluctuating between 17 and 19 in city. Haven't taken on long hi-way trip yet.

Bought the van for my wife and she likes it. I however am 6'3" tall and can tell that it was designed by the Japanese (Nissan). I have to bend in half to get in and have no headroom or leg room and do not like to drive it for very long. My 2001 Ford Windstar that I drive is 10 times more comfortable for a taller person. Mechanically I have had no real problems but I am a stickler for maint, and do all repairs myself. Had to replace ball joints and a CV axle. Some electrical connecters in lights bad, I see this on Japanese designs alot though. It now has 75000 miles and is reliable and ok to drive if your not tall than 5'8"

I have loved my Villager ever since we got it used ( with 17000) miles on it back in 2001. But this year has been a nightmare. It has 89000 miles on it now. Everything has gone wrong & we have dumped over $5000.00 in it over the last 8 months ( towed 4 times) and thinking that "hopefully this will be the last repair". My advise...when any car first produces a $1500. repair bill...sell it & get something else because chances are it will be the beginning of a long line of repair bills. can't afford it anymore but can't afford anything else either-ha !

Bought this van used and put 75000 miles on it in 3 years. Sold it when it reached 115000 miles, and replaced it with a 2005 Chrysler Touring. The Mercury was a much better vehicle - especially in the ride comfort department. The Mercury rode quiet and solid. The Chrysler is noisy and you feel every bump in the road. The only complaint with the Mercury was that it was underpowered with a 3.2 (?) engine.

Driven daily for over six years. Have ~148K miles on it. Keep expecting something to force us to stop driving it, but it just keeps running. Amazing vehicle. We've had a tiny cost of repair over the years. It is my rule against what I measure everything else now. Have had the throttle place stick, so I clean out the throttle body regularly. Gauges failed twice-tach sticks & stops moving. Great fuel mileage. We get 18-ish in town and up to 24 MPG hi-way. Couldn't afford a Honda or Toyota, but didn't need to -- this vehicle will be hard to say 'good-bye' to when/if it ever dies.

We bought this van used in October 2002 with 27,000 miles on it. For the most part we have been very happy with it. The major problem that we have is every two or three years the gas pedal begins to stick. For the longest time the dealership had no idea what the problem was. Finally, they figured out that brake dust was collecting in the area underneath the car where the gas pedal is. They fixed it for less than $300. Two years later we had the same problem. I brought it back in and again they fixed it and things worked perfectly. Like clockwork we are experiencing the problem again, and it is two - three years later, so I need to take it back again. Hope this helps someone!

Had and fixed myself most of the usual problems (Lower than expected mileage, sticky throttle valve, CV JOINT boots failed after 80K-not hard to replace, Bad Headlight socket, dimmer switch intermittant, Rear fuel Injector- Difficult to remove upper intake manifold to access, broken passenger door lock actuator, Bad road vibration-- Bad orig. tires were the cause, front rotors get very hot & warp easy, rear shoes still original, left sliding door seal pops out, waterleak in rear door, paint peeling off cargo rack, squeaky belts, some minor coolant leaks). Engine is still strong, quick acceleration, handles well. Still using 2nd set of tires, but vibration increasing. Horn difficult to activate

Bought Villager used with 22,000 miles. Only problem was sticking gas pedal and normal maintenance until 110,000 miles. Since then have replaced front ball joints and driver's side window control unit. Currently the tachometer is sticking. Get 20 mpg around town and 22 mpg on the highway with the 6 cylinder engine. With over 120,000 miles still runs perfect, burns no oil, and passes smog with flying colors.

We purchased our villager new 10 years ago. We have put 137,000 miles on it and it has been very dependble. We had to replace the CV joint as some reviewers have said and have had a problem with the gas pedal sticking but other than regular maintenance we have had no major problems. Gas mileage is really not bad for a v- 6 van. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a van. It also has tons of room (more than any SUV) when the seats are pushed up.

I am thinking of buying another van and as I have been searching, I see these reviews. This is my 2nd villager. We had great luck with our first one and bought this one after our first one was totaled. Bought with 95,000 miles and we now have 150,000 miles on this one and actually just got back from a weekend get away from a destination that is 4 hours from us. We have slight issues, but normal for this many miles. Considering that the Odyssey and Sienna remain high priced when even used, this van is a great buy! By the way, there was 7 of us on this trip, 2 adults, 4 teenagers and one, big for his age, 8 year old. No complaints from them about room.

Bought at 90,000 miles and drove for 4 years. Pretty good experience overall, although we did get the clogged carb/sticky throttle problem that some have complained about. A simple $40 fix at our local mechanic. Removable pilot seats were great, as was the 6 disc CD player. The fuel economy was not great, at about 17- 18. Have sold it due to age and impending repair bills being more than the TMV.

Just sold after 9 years. Nissan's design and the solid and reliable Nissan's powertrain were the other reasons why I bought it and they surely stood up strong. However, my first years under warranty have been spoiled by constant trips to the dealership to have a dozen of minor assembly items fixed. It just seemed that the van was put together in a hurry and things were constantly falling apart - CDs skipped on minor bumps, headlights had leaks and failed, windshield cracked from an edge, speed steering rattled at high speed, etc. Once all those things have been fixed, the van has became fun and proved to be a real work horse.

Have been driving Villagers for 15 years--my '99 was my second one and I'm very sad to be selling it and moving on. It was so easy to drive, a comfortable ride, and I've loved the versatility and ease of reconfiguring the space for the load (even for a woman!). It carried my Girl Scouts and their gear camping and on troop trips--and as the "cookie van", it held over 1000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies without removing any seats!

Purchased used in 2002 with 30K. My first Mercury. I've always owned Nissans. I've had a lot of problems with this van. The gas pedal sticks, the sliding door windows rattle and won't stay open, rear wiper doesn't work, rear auto windows don't work, A/C doesn't work. The transmission jerks going from 1st to 2nd gear. Had the valve-body replaced twice. Had the box that controls trasmission twice. The transmission still jerks. The Check Engine light has been on for the past 5 years. Took it to 2 dealerships, no one can figure out why the light stays on. Battery and oil lights have been on for the past 6 mo even though I had both checked. I would never buy another Villager again.

We bought our '99 Villager Estate used in 2002. It has served us well. I did have the accelerator problem, and Ford wanted a small fortune to fix it. So I took the car to a local shop with experience with Villagers, and they fixed the sticky accelerator by cleaning the assembly. No problem, cheap fix, works fine. We took this van to Yellowstone last summer, and it performed flawlessly. I did order a used digital radio/player from a salvage yard and had it installed when the lights faded and went out on the old one. It's nice to have somebody to work on these minor fixes who knows the vehicle. We especially like the bucket middle seats (all leather) and the reclining seats. Good van.

We are very happy with the way the van drives. It drives much smoother and quieter than our Ford Explorer did. Only thing that we don't like is that our gas mileage is much worse with the Villager than our Explorer. We are only getting 17 miles per gallon! Also, my show dog Chaos, doesn't like the van at all. He is use to riding in the front seat in my Explorer, and the seat in the Villager is not big enough for him in the front seat beside me. He instantly jumps to the middle seat when we get in the van. Otherwise, I do like the van a lot.

Bought van used with 60k, now have 80k miles. The styling is great, still looks fresh. This is a loaded Estate with leather seats, very comfortable interior with luxury look and feel, rides, drives and handles like a car. Mechanically there are some disappointments. Had the sticky throttle problem, fixed it with $2 can of carb cleaner and spray silicon lube. Gas mileage is disappointing at 19/24, had a 98 Dodge Caravan that got 28 on the highway. Replaced one CV Joint and both ball joints on front suspension, cost was reasonable though at $450. Nissan V-6 is best feature, good power, smooth, quiet, uses no oil. Wish the 3 row seat was removable.

Purchased 99 Villager w/ 46,000 miles last year, seemed like a great used vehicle (clean, good shape, no accident history). Brought back to dealer b/c the gas pedal was stuck. "Supposedly" it was fixed, when I picked it up, after them having for a week, I had to drive from MA to MO and realized the tachometer stopped working and the gas pedal was still sticking! The vehicle has 79,000 miles on it, pretty much everything on the dash has stopped working, except the speedometer works about 50% of the time. Getting rid of it now before something else goes wrong! Previously owned a 96 Villager, other than gas pedal it was a great van!

After a phenomenally dependable and satisfying '97 Villager, my '99 Estate model has been a real lemon. In one year, $600 in suspension parts, $800 to replace throttle body, $1100 to repair A/C, and there are several switches not working. No sticky accelerator though. I am dumping it after 1 year for a Honda or Mazda.

This van has been great for me and my wife. It does seem to average 22 mpg, but this is through the hills in north-central Arkansas. It seems to have plenty of power for zipping up and down the hills. The reviews about lack of power seem unjustified. I also love the cupholders in ours. They adjust to fit any size drink. I do not understand the complaints there either. As far as drivability, this van corners well, and has no squeaks or rattles yet, even though it is now 7 years old. The engine runs like a top and does not miss. All of the features work great. Cruise control is a little jumpy for this area, but works well on the highway. Overall, I would say this is a great vehicle!

Purchased used from local dealer with 68000 miles. The gas pedal sticks and the headlight harness burned out near the lite socket. At about 85,000 miles on a hot summer day about 200 miles from home I experenced a sudden loss of oil pressure. Indicated by the light and noisy lifters. Continued to drive as I had no other choice for 200 miles with intermittent oil pressure. Changed to a heaver oil and no problems for 1 year then the same story. Changed to a heavier oil again then no problems. Now have Over 111,000 miles. I do not understand what is going on with the oil pressure but the vehicle has been very reliable and uses no oil between changes of 12000miles.

This is our second Villager, the first one has been great, we still have it and it has 177000 miles on it, but this newer one has problems. The accelerator sticks. We have had it fixed once already and in less than 3 years need to have it fixed again. We were charged almost $400.00 the first time. It also bounces a lot. Even with new tires it is not the smooth ride our other older villager has. It rattles, windows pop open on even small bumps.

Bought my villager estate at 94K miles. Had to replace front CV Joints at 100K. Has 110K with no problems. As such a very reliable small van. Hate minivans but have to grudgingly respect the villager for quality and style. Wouldnt have bought it if it wasnt for the Nissan technology. My only gripe is that its very bad on leg room both front and middle. Captain's chairs are heavy to remove and pain to put back. Like the front and rear AC feature...wish it was also the same for heat. Could have been more powerful and definitely could have been much better on gas. Gives me a measly 17 in the city and around 24 on the highway. All in all would recommend this small minivan.

We have two villagers, a 1995 and a 99, both of which I bought used, and both have been very reliable and inexpensive to maintain. The 99 has 5 times the acceleration of the 95. I also recently began experiencing the sticky gas pedal in the 99. If someone has an easy solution, I'd appreciate your sharing it.

Driving comfort for this vehicle is without measure. It drives like a town car and very quiet inside. Even after 75000 miles the engine is smooth and quiet and quickly responds when you press the accelerator. It's a vehicle you can trust to get you around town and the long halls.

I have loved this van. We bought it used with 47k miles, and added a 60k warranty to it that I never used, and I looked hard for a reason. Had the sticky throttle problem, fixed it myself with some carb cleaner on the throttle body (less than $5 and 10 minutes). Replaced struts and CV boot at 112k. Only $750 in repairs in 65k miles, can't complain about that, includes brakes, battery, tail lt, shocks and struts. Probably run another 30-40 before other normal repairs are needed, at least I hope! It never leaks oil or anything. Don't use a cheap battery, and I recommend the midgrade tires (not the cheapies) for a smoother ride. Great car and much better price than Honda/Toyota.

I am experiencing my first problem at 68000 miles and that is that the air conditioning system (which runs underneath the vehicle) has corroded. Unfortunately this is not an inexpensive repair. I was told by the shop that this is a common problem.

My passenger headlight has had the wiring harness replaced by me 3 times now, it is a underrated ground on the plug @18 guage wire. I stapped a 12 guage from 1 inch behind plug w/ a strap and attached it to the fire wall due to its under rating to handle the current. Local dealer says ther are no known issues. Have had all 3 engine senors replaced, rear window switch broken(still) and now struts seem to be gone as it handles badly @ 100k.And radio controls on steering wheel shorted out. And my gas pedal sticks- How do you fix it!! Will buy Honda or Toyota next time!

This has been the worst vehicle I have ever owned and will never buy another Ford product. Have replaced headlight wiring, throttle box (>$400 due to sticking gas pedal), and power door locks. Driver's auto door lock currently not working, and radio display is blank (have found out this is a common problem). Doors rattled like crazy from day #1 (dealer fixed after many, many tries). Many other annoying repairs. Great inconvenience. My advice -- buy a Honda. We have had two,and they last well over 200,000 miles with minimal repairs. Only bought Villager because Honda Odyssey was not available at the time and had to have a mini van.

I have had this van for only a year. Bought it with only 36K and now has 46K. Has not been in the shop and dont plan on it. IMy wife drives it daily for basic around town errands and hauling kids. She loves it for what we use it for. It would be a little cramped for adults in the back for long trips, but great for small families and hauling small ones around. Just took the familiy on a trip and covered about 1,000 miles, the van was a solid performer. I would have to say that I would rather own a Sienna or an Odyseey, but these are both well overpriced. Overall, this van is the best bang for your buck as far as price, ride quality and reliability.

I have really enjoyed this vehicle. I drive it everyday and it has been reliable and handled well. The heater and air conditioning provide a comfortable atmosphere. But the handling is great. I highly recommend this van, and wonder why they quit making it.

Excellent vehicle for a small family. Compact sport styling and good low end response make driving around town a pleasure. Comfortable ride and well appointed interior. Removable second row buckets and sliding rear seat make it easy to create a larger cargo volume. Very satisfied with choice to date.

Not a bad liitle van. Must say that I do not care for American vehicles and only bought this van because I needed one, this was the only van available in my price range. Haven't looked back since. Couple of trips across the US, plus the half-dozen to grandma's house. Wish there was a little bit more cargo space, but moving the rear seat up one-notch does the trick.

Although most like this van both my wife and I are very dissapointed. since the warranty expired, we have replaced - Struts, Strut plates, 1 fuel injector, rear A/C, ball joints, breaks and Throttle plate. all Ford had to say was that we were on our own. WE will not buy from FORD again.

The van has been an exceptionally great vehicle. Just before the warranty expired we had to replace both headlight harnesses because of electrical faults. The radio & clock display just failed as well as most of the instrument lights on the ETC air conditioner control. The bulbs for the A/c control are not available at the dealer. The radio display has not been repaired because of the great cost.

This has been a great family vehicle, which we got after trading in a 1993 that had over 100,000 miles with only warranty and recall repairs. However, one real problem developed - the gas pedal began to stick when I went to accelerate (fortunately it never stuck while depressed). This could have been hazardous if I had been trying to accelerate in an avoidance move or something similar. My dealer fixed what he called "carbon buildup" which he said he rarely sees. However, I see in another post here that someone else has had the same problem, so I'm thinking it may be more common that we're lead to believe.

I NOW HAVE 80000 ON MY VILLAGER. IT HAS NOT HAD ANY MAJOR REPAIRS. I RECENTLY HAD TO HAVE THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW SWITCH REPAIRED (WINDOW WOULD NOT GO UP, TOTAL BILL $75.00. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE STICKY GAS PEDAL SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THE VAN. ANY IDEAS HOW TO FIX?? THE CUP HOLDERS ARE LACKING (LARGE CUPS ARE A PROBLEM). I USE MY VAN FOR WORK (COMPUTER REPAIR) AND FIND THE SEATING OPTIONS PERFECT FOR HOW I USE IT (HAULING PC'S, MONITORS, AND LOTS OF PARTS). I LIKE THE GAS MILEAGE, 24 MILES PER GALLON, AND THE 3.3 IS A SNAPPY ENGINE. I PULL A 16 FOOT BASS BOAT WITH NO TROUBLE.

we purchased the van used. we have had only one problem with the headlight wiring harness. the headlights would individually go out when driving over bumps. the problem was corrected by the dealer replacing the plugs at the end of the wiring harness. Over all, it rides/drives like a very controlable/predictable sport sedan. great for long trips. would buy another:)

This van drives like a car, storage and cubby holes are great, don't really like drink holders. Would prefer bucket seats instead of bench seats in back. Back seats terribly uncomfortable particularly for long distances. Front seats great for distance and comfort. Little or no mechanical issues. Sticky gas pedal when first purchased but fixed easily
