My family purchased this vehicle in mid 2001 with about 40,000 miles on it. It's now sitting at 261,983 with no issues from the engine or trans. As a work vehicle, we had about 1,400 pounds in the back at all times, and it had no trouble hauling that. The AWD functions great, and with a chip to synchronize it, every wheel pulls the same no matter what. Traction is great, and even feels like it grips better in slightly wet conditions than dry. The interior has worn well for what we used it for, with the only major spot being the center console armrest having a hole worn in the cushioning. The radio works great, with better reception than our 05 Towncar. All in all its the most reliable vehicle my family has ever had, with parts lasting far longer than expected, like a fuel pump going for 250k miles, or an alternator going for 260k. Engine and trans are still strong, despite the overweight driving. Gas mileage is on the low side, but the stubbornness more than makes up for it in my eyes. Even overheating to lock down after a hose broke didn't slow it down.

good starter vehicle but poor overall

ive put about $400-500 in this vehicle since ive had it at the start of 2015. ive had this vehicle since march of 2015. and im posting this on September of 2015. suv now has 177750 miles on it. bought it when it had about 168000 on it for $2000. lots of things wrong with it still. heres what ive noticed.. outside temp gauge has common problem of messing up and going out completely... brake lights dont like to come on and stay on unless your on the brake decently hard.. the brake lights will go off even when your braking and thats with a new brake light switch. driving on hwy is noisy as the design is bad... u can hear wind pretty good almost as if some window is cracked. headlights are poor design.. the point way to low down and dont go very far out.. hard to see at night. rear wiper blade doesnt even touch the window when it wipes. thats a common problem. another common problem is the radio goes out quick. had to replace it when i bought it. another downside is it has terrible gas mileage.. i get about 13 mpg in the city and around 16 on the hwy. and thats with keeping it maintenenced. 21 gallon fuel tank goes fast as hell in this suv with this mpg. the upsides..... parts are usually cheap for the vehicle... it has a nice outside look to it.. with about 100 bucks i made it look mean... (put a hood scoop on it and a light bar on top). its awd... so.. better traction all the time. its hard for me to even squeal the tires when i floor it from a complete stop with tires with only about 30% tread left. so traction is really good. my overall.... its a starter vehicle... not a good vehicle to have for the rest of your life thats for sure.

I love this SUV. Bought it new, have over 170,000 miles on it and hope to get another 170,000 miles out of it. The 302 V8 does and pulls everything I ask it to. This SUV still turns heads and get compliments on it after 10 years of owning it. I also drive a Jeep Commander. For snow I still prefer the Mountaineer. Had the shocks replaced a month ago and ride is very stiff now. Hope it will smooth out with a little more miles on them.

The Mercury Mountaineer for the 1999 model year is a solid, fairly luxurious SUV entry from Ford Motor Company's Mercury division. The 5.0 L V8 is a gas-guzzler that despite only putting out 215 HP propels the nearly 4500-pound car well. The interior quality is fairly formidable, though its aesthetics are lacking. The cargo room of the Mountaineer allows it to function as the ideal vehicle to carry baseball, golf, or sporting equipment. The car is extremely reliable, far more so than the current mid-size SUV slate Ford offers. The fifteen-inch chrome wheels are aesthetically-pleasing as is the car's grille which sets it apart from its Ford Explorer sibling.

I bought it at 32K miles and now it has 107K miles. Very reliable. The all-wheel-drive feature handles superbly in snow, ice, and rain. ABS is top-notch. Nice V8 power. The sound system and cruise controls on the steering wheel are an excellent touch. My only complaints have been a seat belt that pulls too tight, spotty FM reception about 25 miles outside Nashville city limits, and a rear-windshield wiper that never completely wipes the back glass.

Purchased the vehicle in 2001, it has been a joy to own, excepting rear differential seal leak, shot EGR valve, and a bad rear wheel speed sensor. Vehicle is "old generation" SUV, huge inside and handling is kind of gimpy on the road. Minor suspension prob's as the vehicle gets older. This model year received very good reliability ratings in the Consumer Rept's guide compared to other model years. Recommended.

I have owned this vehicle for over five years and it is one of the best cars I have ever had. The worse problem was a noisy alternator. Other than that just the normal brake, battery, and such replacements have been required. I would buy another except for the gas mileage issue and somewhat harsh ride quality.

I have had this suv since my jr. year of high school and had a great experience. I bought it with 82,000 and have 60,000 on it and have had no major problems, just an alternator. I am very rough on it and like to take it into the fields and muddy roads a couple times a year, never has gotten stuck yet! Its great for a trip or an evening out. I tow with it and have had no problems.

I see it as a woman's truck. It holds the kids, the gear and tows the boat. For camping we set up the tent as a storage closet and sleep in the truck. I love the rear controls, they come in handy to teach the kids how to work the radio and for the nights sleeping in the back, the temp and radio are at my fingertips. Looks nice, handles awesome, and is very fun to drive. It is a TANK in the rain. I have the V8, so it uses gas, but it is an SUV. It's a classy Explorer with lots of little added features that make it more luxurious.

For the money, the looks and the performance this SUV is a very good deal. The interior is well fit, no squeaks ect., the leather still smells new and has held up very well. The AWD is exceptional in the snow and wet and my wife has confidence while driving it. More money than an Explorer but (I have had 5)worth the step up.

After looking at Explorers for a couple of weeks, we found that there were way too many options and interior and exterior colors. Finding a V8 with grey interior and good options was impossible. We found the Mountaineer to have all the upgrades we wanted and had more of a luxury feel. The head lights, tail lights, and grill set it apart from the Explorer. The V6 is powerful, but if you tow or just love power (like me), you have to get the 5.0 V8.

Good value if you pay only blue book! The certified programs are a racket since you will inevidibly be back in the dealership for something little every other month. Things here and there add up when you are spending $100 deductible every visit. I've already had three recalls on mine...mostly minor. Had rear wiper motor, turn signal switch, exhaust sensor, fan blower motor replaced in first year. Overall, the v8 has great pick up for an SUV and it has lots of power. The styling is nicer than same platform explorer. Still rugged! LOUD,LOUD,LOUD! Interior noise is deafening.Handles roughly, very rigid! But it is an suv, not a mercedes.

This has been an outstanding vehicle. I have never bee nmuch of a Ford/Mercury fan but I will be buying another Mountaineer. Unfortunately this vehicle has been in several accidents, but It has saved the lives of my family due to it's sturdy construction. It is a bit of a gas hog but it's safety and reliability have made it worth the additional cost of fuel.

I bought this Mntr last year and have enjoyed almost every day since. I agree with theother posting about the el;ectrical problems, they seem to happen. I cannot see my radio lights at all. I wish the middle compartment opened from the side instead of straight up, it is annoying. The gas mileage is a bite also. The vehichle drives great and looks awesome. The value has dropped significantly in the last year which is another downside. I would buy it again, but a six not an eight cylinder.

Great power and style in this '99. Just bought with 32,000 miles/. Some rattles in center console and glove box area. Working on trying to tighten up a bit. Hard ride-like truck. Heavy duty feel is great. American built cars/SUV's still need quality workmenship-concerned after reading several revues. After so many years of building vehicles, we still cannot master the basics-rattles, electrical problems, etc. should be a thing of the past. Hoping this one is a keeper!

The '99 Mountaineer is a great all around SUV. It is great for the Michigan winters and very comfortable to drive. I average 15-17 mpg in the city. I realized an impressive 24 mpg on a 19 hour straight thru trip to Tampa, Fla. I bought the vehicle 3 years old with 35,000 miles on it and truly believe it will outlast my 5 year financing.

I loved this Ute. in the beginning, but one problem has lead to another. First there was electrical with the Radio. Then they replaced it and we lost all signal hhhmmmmmmmmmm. We put the old one back in, and now I have memorized the functions since I can't see them anymore. The turn signal is now broken, and I think there is a knock in the Transmision. We are currently trying to sell this PO_ and buy a car. We spent 19,000 on this car and a year later we will be lucky to get 14,000 even more pathetic.

Overall I've had a great experience with this vehicle. Love the versatility - have hauled all sorts of things home with it - furniture, bags and bags of mulch, mountains of groceries - you name it. The front seats are very comfortable, the leather has worn well, don't know about the back seats since I've never sat in them but haven't had any complaints. Had a few minor problems covered under warranty - I have a great dealer so they are always taken care of quickly, plus a couple of recall items - the windshield wiper problem and the radio.

The vehicle was great to drive, very reliable. The problems started occuring about 45,000. The windshield wipers came on sporatically. Later there was a recall for this problem. After a few months of driving the LCD radio light went out as well as the horn. Before I had a chance to get this fix less than a week later the car caught fire while sitting in the parking lot overnight. Determined to be an eletrical fire. Buyer beware, I beleive sometime in the near future there may be another recall on these models and year.

Have had this car for about 4 yrs. Haven't had any problems until the past month or so. Everything electrical is acting up. Current probs: front/back sprayer, back wipers, brights, back left blinker, back right brake light, left rear window all do not work. This seems odd that all of these probs would happen at once on a car that's not that old. Anyone else have these sort of problems?

Overall excellent vehicle. I experienced a minor irritant with the top interior front door moldings. The passenger side clip broke a couple years ago, and I periodically have to re-secure it. The privacy screen objected when my dachshund climbed on it when it was deployed--but who would expect it not to? My husband got it to work again, but the retractor spring is weak.

I PURCHASED THIS SUV NEW AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH IT. I HAVE THE V6 ENGINE. I LOADED IT WITH ALL OF THE OPTIONS. THE ONLY OPTION THAT I DID NOT WANT WAS THE LEATHER SEATS. THEY ARE COLD IN THE WINTER, AND HOT IN THE SUMMER. THE CLOTH SEATS ALSO HELP TO CUT DOWN ON THE NOISE INSIDE THE SUV. THE AC AND HEATER ARE GREAT. THE RADIO IS THE BEST THAT I HAVE EVERY HAD. I ORDERED IT WITH THE TOW PACKAGE, SO WITH THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON I HAVE REAL 4 WHEEL DRIVE. (TOW PACKAGE GIVES YOU BOTH REAR WHEELS WORKING ALL THE TIME, THIS IS A VERY GOOD THING). ON THE OPEN ROAD I GET 23 MPG AND AROUND TOWN 16 MPG. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER.
