This car is great IF it's been taken care of and the maintenance has been done on it when scheduled. I bought the car from my grandma who bought it from brand new and only had 30,000 miles on the odometer. Now I've doubled it plus some. It's been great on trips and has never let me down. Drives very smoothly for the most part, and is really comfortable this side of a luxury car. The seats are amazing (I have the leather seats) both front and back, though weirdly the back seat does not have cup holders at all. Interior is nice enough for a high end mainstream brand, but nothing that is extravagant. The power is fine... just have to tap into it. Compared to similar cars (Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, etc) it is less power, but for normal drivers who just commute and don't speed all over it does the job just fine. Transmission works well enough, though it's not the smoothest transmission it's still working. I'm not sure if the transmission issues affect the V6 versions compared to the I4 cars. Gas mileage is only so-so, I get about 20 in the city off a tank, and 25 with a small bit of city and mostly highway. I did see close to 29 mpg driving across country to visit a friend several states away, on interstate going 75. It does recommend premium fuel (which these mileage figures are based on) however it is not REQUIRED. The ignition system can adjust itself to take advantage of higher octane fuel or run on regular. Does great in the snow though! Plows through snow great and doesn't get stuck unless it's a lot of snow. Like I said before nothing really to leave me stranded. I've had the valve cover gasket replaced once due to leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold, a small leak fixed in the coolant system, some light bulbs in the dash, the drive belts replace (not the timing belt), and the negative battery terminal that had rusted to the breaking point. I don't see these as a reliability issue (besides the gasket which is but its a common problem with this engine; also the gasket isn't cheap according to my mechanic,) but as normal wear on cars of this age. I am taking care of this car the best I can and doing regular maintenance when it's called for in the owners manual. I know there were some things done before I got the car but as far as I am aware the work done was due to the low mileage it had seen (radiator was replaced, front rotors replaced though this was due to my grandma's driving style). TL;DR: It's a great car if it's taken care of and properly treated, gets decent/ ok gas mileage depending on driving style, and is extremely comfortable.

Still my favorite car

This was my very first car at the age of 15 with my driver's permit. I learned how to drive in this car so you could say I have a biased opinion towards it but after driving many different models and owning a 2001 Chevy Lumina and a 2012 Ford Focus (absolute garbage, never buy a Focus or a Ford), this Mazda still wins hands down. For being over a decade old at the time of owning it, it felt very sporty and aesthetic compared to my peers' vehicles. It still looks nice compared to boxier models in the 90's and even early 2000's. My 2001 Chevy Lumina looks like an old granny car compared to the 1999 Mazda 626. It's a stunning car in candy apple red. The interior was also pleasing to the eye. Lots of plastic but it didn't feel cheap like my 2012 Ford Focus does. The controls were easy to change while driving. I can't comment on the stock radio because mine had a custom Pioneer installed when I got the car, but the sound from the stock speakers was much more "tinny" than my Lumina. If that isn't as important to you as the performance then I would absolutely still recommend this car. With a V6 I had no problems getting up to speed and maintaining that speed. I've yet to drive a car that could match my Mazda's power. And it still got pretty decent gas mileage, I averaged 20-22 on the highway and 15-18 in the city. The only downside to this car is its issue with belts and the transmission. I replaced the serpentine belt twice in one month and the alternator belt broke while I was driving home and I had no idea until the battery light came on and I literally rolled to a dead stop in my driveway. The alternator belt was only a couple months old when it snapped. The other issue is the transmission, Mazdas are notorious for trannys having short lifespans. Towards the end of my ownership, the transmission would buckle and jerk when upshifting. If I'd had the money at the time, I would have repaired it because I loved the car, but unfortunately I had to sell it as is and get a more reliable car. My 2001 Chevy Lumina gets great mileage and I have not spent a single dime on repairs in the 4 years I've owned it (WOW!) but I still miss my Mazda 626.

I was really excited when I got my 626. The oscillating AC was the coolest thing. I got it a year ago with 130,000 miles on it, seeing as I was a high school student, I didn't need anything fancy. Sadly, things started going wrong as soon as I got it. The o2 Sensor had to be replaced twice. The transmission started having major problems after two weeks, and the fuel pump went out. I ended up spending more on repairs than I did on the actual car. I did love it, though. One morning on my way to school the transmission went out going up a hill. 138,000 Miles. That was the last time I drove it. I sold it for 500 for parts. The transmission is known to go out on these models, though.

My dad bought me this car in February of 2010 for my sophomore year in high school. We knew it had problems but we got it for only $1,180 and 129,000 miles on the odometer. After having it inspected the next day I discovered that it was a hunk of junk basically. It still needs its driver's side steering control arm replaced,a new catalytic converter, a new muffler and eventually the transmission. The car is working its way down the shifter and is unstable in Park and Reverse gears. The minor stuff is the power antenna and driver's power door locking mechanism and discs and drums. He uses it to drive to work and it hasn't killed him yet so maybe it will give out before I "officially get it."

My Awesome 626. Love her to death.

Alright, so I bought this great piece of engineering my sophomore year of high school. I am now a sophomore in college. I love this vehicle! Small but, "quick" 2 liter engine coupled with the five speed manual is great to drive. Don't buy an auto, LOL. No fun, at all (and unreliable), great interior, clean, with a decent sound system. (I remember, it was decent. Lost the cd player at about. 145,000 miles.) power antenna is great! People just don't take care of them (grease) and say that it's mazdas fault. (sorry, its yours.) clutch is still going, at 165,000 miles! As the reliability reports says, the intake gasket does go, I replaced mine at 135,000. No major problems since.

Bought our red Mazda hot rod used off of a two year lease with about 36,000 miles. Now have 184000. Normal maintenance, no unusual problems, continues to run like a champ. Looks great, but there now is corrosion underneath the car around suspension components and gas tank. My trusted mechanic recommended that my daughter not drive it 250 miles to university considering it could break down far from home. This car which has taken my family on trips across the US is now in semi retirement shuttling my youngest son to school and back (10 miles). Although it's now our "beater" it still looks good with its red, rust free exterior, leather seats and still shiny aluminum wheels.

My 626 was my first vehicle. This was a great started car, very reliable. However, as soon as it neared 80,000 miles things started snowballing. I had belt problems causing acceleration problems, to the point that it was unsafe to drive. This was a minor repair compared to the transmission I had to replace at 95,000 miles. It was running smoothly then just gave out one day. I was told by a local mechanic this is a very common issue. Mine was the third '99 Mazda 626 the shop had seen this year for the same issue. Since the transmission was replaced I've had major problems with the a/c and battery. The car just shut off going 40 mph down the highway today. I am officially retiring this vehicle

I purchased this car in Nov 1999 with a $2,250 rebate at $16k. As of July of 2009, it has 200,000 miles. Around 68k (after warranty exp) miles, I replaced the rack & pinion. I have changed the timing belt & water pump twice as part of scheduled maintenance. No transmission problems (problems w/ 4cyl)! The car still drives good. I just purchased a 2000 Lexus GS w/ 124k miles on it and I'm looking forward to getting 400,000 miles out of that. The Mazda will be used as a spare car until it can't run anymore. The parts are a bit expensive though.

We bought this demo car in 2000. I liked the leather seats and deserts colors. It has a very roomy back seat. Lots of head room. We were concerned after the purchase that the transmission seemed to snap. After several visits to the dealer we ended up having the motor mounts replined, which was under warranty. The radio quit working under warranty. The anntena has failed not under warranty and we have replaced a visor. Other than that the car just keeps going now at 138,000 miles. We replaced the brakes, tune ups, the timing belt at the right mileage, recently a new battery. The car feels solid and strong. Can't believe it didn't fall apart after warranty. I'll drive it until it dies.

My 1999 626, manual transmission (we bought it new) has 165,000 miles on it. It is now a "college car" for my son. The engine went out a few weeks ago and we opted to put a used one in (100,000 miles on this one). $1,800.00 later and the car is running great. We could not find a used car for the price of repairing this one. The body and interior on this car still looks great. Only problems..antenna won't go down, one power window doesn't work (back seat) other than that this car has been almost repair free. I hope we can get another few years on the new engine.....

My friends love the swinging air vents. The car runs great and looks decent for Mazda styling. I never expected to be so satisfied with it!

I'm only 17 so when looking for a car my grandpa wanted me to get one little but Nice. So he picked it out. At first it was great but within a week it was a total pain. The back sway bar was broke, there was a little oil leak and the fuel pump went out. In total repairs where over $1000. Thats a lot for a girl in school and working a minimum wage job but I got it fixed and its a great car. Everything works good. Pretty good gas mileage and not too bad on insurance.

I love this car for following reasons 1. Comfort. I love the interior comforts and the features that it has like Swing Vents 2. Driving. The acceleration was good. Pick up was not comparable to Chrysler V6 but not bad either. 3. I have driven this car over the NH mountains and never had issues. 4. Had to recharge the AC at about 97kmiles and timing belt replaced and after that the AC is fine without issues Regular oil changes , 90000 service, done. Recently had to replace the transmission hose as it had some problems.

It rides very well. No other maintenance problems, regular maintenance upkeep. Very good value for the money for me.

I'm at 66,700 for this 1999 beauty, but I guess it's time to trade her in. In the past year, I've put over $1800 into the car, and I'm nervous to continue driving her long distances, should something else go wrong. It's kind of like having an elderly cat or dog. You love them, but you know it's just a matter of time. So, reluctantly, I will be saying goodbye to my sage-green gal, and hope that she finds another good home, swinging vents and all!

Bought this car used in 2006 for $4900 and had 60,000 miles on it. Now have 104,000 miles. No real problems, just normal maintenance. 4cyl has very little power, and gas mileage isn't that good (22 mpg) considering the lack of performance. I can see the Ford influences, what a shame. Thought I was getting a Japanese car. Should have done my homework. Bought for daughter to train on, kind of a bumper car if you know what I mean.

I own a 1990 Miata which has been bulletproof and a blast to drive. When looking for a family car, the 626 seemed like a logical choice. It's a great highway cruiser, the handling is fantastic for a mid priced 4 door sedan, and it's been reliable. The gas mileage could be a little better, but it is a v6. From the research I've done and the posts on this site, it looks like the Mazda made v6 engine and tranny are the way to go.

I bought my car in 06 from a private owner. The car was in great condition and had 62k miles on it. 6 months after buying the car my the cd player decided it no longer wanted to play cds, the antenna will not go down and it makes this horrible noise whenever I put the radio on, now the AC doesnt work anymore I was told that the entire dash board needs to come out for the problem to be fixed $$$$$, also the power door locks doesnt work any more that too is making an awful loud noise that I cant stand This car is more of a headache than anything else. I wish i would have done more research on these types of cars and i only have 83,246 miles imagine what will happen at 40,000 save your money

I bought this car with 45K on it and never had any problems up until 3 months ago.(100K) It has been a snowball ever since the Altanator belt went. Now the Alt. is bad the O2 sensor (don't know which one) The is oil leaking into exhaust valve, piston ring, fuel injector, there is a vacuum leak. The antenna has been broke since a month after i bought it. Sway bar was broke never knew till we changed the brakes. The altinator is very hard to get at. I loved the car and now it is snowballing on down. I kept up on it and took care of it. But I am to poor to fix it all at once now.

My car has over 110,000 miles on it; Yesterday I got almost 40 mpg, interstate driving @ 73 mph with AC, cruise when possible. My car needs a tune up too, but always gets regular oil changes. I added a spoiler, alloy wheels and a stripe at purchase giving the design a more finished look; people still remark at how sporty my car is. I would buy another same model or V6 when/if this one ever gives up. I have minor back problems and the seats are great even for long distances; the rotating fan is great for in between weather and saves AC. Good buy for my money.

Purchased new when the dealership offered invoice price and Mazda had a $2,250 rebate, a no brainer to purchase a V6 sedan for $17,000. Now 120,000 mies and looking to double that. Terrific MPG's 28 to 30 with an automatic trans. commuting 50 miles one way through the southern NY roads (25 MPG with 4 snow tires). No major mechanical problems to mention. Minor problems- automatic antenna finally broke after 6 years and CD player needed to be replaced once. Very good handling and response. If still going strong at 200k with preventative maintainence and no more hit deer, I will replace the timing belt again (about $350) and shoot for 300K.

I bought this car used in 2001. Had 35K miles on it. It now has 125K miles on it. It's a good car to get you from point A to B, and it looks nice if you keep it cleaned up. But its life span probably won't exceed far past 150K. I haven't had a wreck, and I've kept up the maintenance. At 100K, a/c vents started spewing plastic filter pieces (just annoying, swivel still works, but slowly). CV boots cracked, twice (clicking when turns). At 120K, the oil started leaking, engine began vibrating, a/c pulled too much power (engine vibrates when it's on, computer timing is off). Lots of problems, but at 125K, what can you expect from this quality of car.

Very nice and comfortable family sedan. Gets over 30mpg. Down side, auto transmission failed at 80,000 miles and cost $3500 to replace at dealer and still is not right. Due to possible design flaw, transmission overheats during extended highway use causing failure. Don't buy unless it has a transmission cooler in front of radiator.

This is by far the most unreliable car you could purchase. This car has racked up over $8 grand in repairs, every other month something goes wrong. The quality of the vehicle is beyond horrible. In addition to top it off Mazda USA headquarters are the rudest and most unprofessional people to ever work with. They don't back their vehicles at all and don't care what is going on. This car gives a new meaning to a lemon. I have had the steering rack, boots, oil leaks, hoses, fan, motor, radiator, thermostat, O2 sensor, EGR service, and much more done to this. Mazda is the worst company to do business with and this is the last Mazda I would ever purchase or recommend take your money elsewhere.

This car blew its engine at 116,000 miles; you be the judge of if that's good or not. It was very well maintained. I work in appraisals of cars and the Mazdas lose value very quickly and are not the best engineered vehicles by any means. Looks of the car lead me to it and also purchased it before I entered my career of knowing now what holds value better than other vehicles and which vehicles have a better track record on performance than others. Looks cute, drives okay. No value and cheaply made.

I bought the car with 60,000 miles. And in two weeks of owning the car the transmission went out. The car was under a 30 day warranty so the dealership paid for a rebuilt transmission to put into the car. Less than a year later the transmission that was put in went out. I had to pay $1,800.00 to have another transmission put in (this is the third transmission in this car). I had to take back 6 months later because my car would not go into reverse. The mechanic told me that the transmission in the Mazda's are consistently failing. A/C stopped working. Pulley is going out. Trading in for a Infiniti.

This is my 6th 626 (1st one was in '79). In 175,000 miles only one problem - the heat gauge failed and had to replace the instrument cluster. At this point I get 28 - 31 mpg (with the 5-speed) and am driving 3000+ miles/month. The car still looks good, and like our others, I expect to drive it for 200,000+ miles. Still haven't replaced a clutch, or anything other than normal maintenance. Wish my van was as reliable.

The professional reviews are pretty accurate. If you need the comfort and roominess of a sedan but like to drive on windy curvy roads you won't be disappointed. While you wouldn't compare it with a Porsche for handling, I drive frequently on 1 lane roads and the performance is good. With the fold down seats I have room for my stuff when I am enjoying the great outdoors.

After owning this car for almost 2 years, our 626 has been a decent vehicle for my wife until now. Suddenly the transmission has gone out and had to be replaced. The tranny shop told us that they see a LOT of these Ford transmissions and said most don't make it to 100k miles. I have a Honda and a Mitsubishi that both have over 165k and have had no problems whatsoever. No late model car should have transmission problems this soon (our 626 has about 105k on it). I am now finding that this is fairly common with the 626, so keep that in mind if you are considering buying one. If you do still buy one, go for the V6.

I've had pretty good luck with my 626. Car has very little pep, but continues to trot along. I can tell the transmission is going to go soon. I've not had anything go wrong with this car outside of very minor things (power antenna stays up, clock set button doesn't work, one dash light is out). No big deal. Fit and finish are pretty bad on the interior, but I'm a pretty big guy and admittedly rough on things.

It was a well running car until it reached 70,000 miles. Lots of problems after this point. I did not abuse this car, I had the oil changed and the car checked every 3,000 miles. Had to replace transmission. Every year the coolant bottle cracks, replaced twice under warranty and every year there after. Would recommend to lease this car, not to buy it-too many problems.

Yah, I KNOW that I have more than 90000 mi on a 1999 626, But does that mean that I should not be upset that my car has been in the shop more than I have had it in my possesion?! Not only did I change the transmission, but the enginge. Oh! And it gets better, the car is currently at the shop(Im still paying a car note monthly!) because the check engine light has been on forever. I am paying for the sensor to be changed, and was told if that doesn't work the dealership will have to order me a new chip! Basiclly I have replaced the entire car. If I decide to sell it, its not worth even close to what I've put into this.

Next a nice set of rims and that should be all. Otherwise no real complaints, replaced timing belt, brakes and 2 sensors (normal stuff)

I bought my 1999 626 new in 1999. At only 50 miles I had to bring it in because it needed an entirely new timing belt system. It only got worse after that. My car was in and out of the shop so often that I could have claimed under the FL lemon law if it had been in the shop one more day. I think part of the problem was the inadequate dealer service shop and bad luck. I had bought this car based on its reliability. I am trading tomorrow and I won't miss my car.

A wonderfully reliable workhorse. Never give it a thought, just get in and go. Comparisons to Accord/Camry/Etc. Are obvious given the price point, but I argue the 626, at least the LX V6, does it better and with tremendous amounts of style or the competition. Everytime I stroll towards the car in a crowded parking lot--I never see a prettier package without spending $20,000 more! It is a real looker! With the leather/moonroof/power-out- the-yingyang combo, you would be pressed to find as well heeled a car for double the money!

Why at 60,000 miles I had to get a new transmission! 1,500 dollars!!! OUCH! With the way the economy is going...I had to use all I had and some...just finished paying on the stupid thing. My brain just could not understand why I was getting a new transmission...to what should have been a decent and new car and great condition. The Mazda 626 is a popular vehicle. However, do not let this fool you. I have had problems with my Mazda and am currently replacing the transmission at 71,000 miles. Now, after much research, I've found that the 626 has a common transmission problem. Unfortunately, it is not on the current list of recalls - but you can find it with the Office of Defects from the National Transporation Highway Safety. Please also be aware that Mazda Corporation does not stand up for the consumer, but sell vehicles with known defects. I recommend you think about buying another car, before you buy a Mazda.

Overall a vehicle that has exceeded my expectations. Very reliable, not a single problem, just routine maintenance. Excellent fuel economy with the 4cyl 5sp - 30-31 mpg in daily driving (in the horrible Seattle traffic), 36-38 on the hwy. Runs fine on regular unleaded and has adequate power for merging and passing. Great seats, more comfortable than the ones in my parents' Passat! Great leg room front and rear, 4 six-footers fit fine in this car. Could have less road noise, changing the tires helped here (to Yokohama Avid Touring radials), as did adding noise reducing material behind the front doors. Overall highly recommended.

I bought my 626 a couple of years ago and have decided that it is the best car I have owned. I believe that the ES is much nicer than the LX even if they are small differences, and I think that they are worth the money. Additionaly the car is pretty quick and has been very reliable on long cross country trips. I would prefer a 626 ES over a Corrolla any day.

Gotta love the growl

Solid car. 2.4L V-6 GROWLS...and I love it! Lots of room inside, fun to drive 5-speed, simple but sharp styling.

Decent Car for the Price

My wife has had no problems with her 626. This car is a good Accord/Camry alternative that we were able to buy for thousands less than either of those comparably equipped.

This car runs great

I would advice not to go for it. The Transmission by Ford is useless and all these years they can't even build a simple automatic reliable transmission. Transmission sucks and produces knock on very shift on a stop and go stop and go road.

Had to buy it, but not unhappy!

I leased this car back in 1999 - the only V6 5-speed in the entire state of Florida - and now it's time to turn it in. One problem, I have 87,000 miles on it and was only allowed 36k. However, I'm not unhappy about buying the car. It's fast, handles well, gets great mileage, and aside from basic maintenance, I've put a total of $25 into it. I've outrun more cars than I care to admit and survived one pretty serious accident.

The vehicle has been nothing but reliable. The four cylinder automatic is adequate, but not fast. The cabin noise is more than it should be on rouch asphalt. The interior ergonomics and passenger comfort at excellent. The emergency handling is very good.

In 2.5 yrs, 45K miles, have had not a single problem. Zippy 4cyl engine passes anything on the road with power to spare. Fold down rear seats with access to trunk space gives this car unusual versatility. Heat & AC temp adjustments very responsive.

I am very pleased with my decision. I had a '93 MX-6 with the same engine (2.5 V-6) and it is terrific. Wasn't sure what to expect with the automatic but it provides good power. The interior layout is very good, I'm a big guy 6'3" 280 and have no problems. If it had the Honda nameplate it would've won every award, but I like Mazda because you can usually get a good deal and their build quality is good.

Please dont buy

I got this car as a gift, though it has been reliable I DO NOT recommend anyone buying it. I wouldn't have bought this car for myself.
