EGR Valve at 100,000 to150,000 mi. needs to be replaced and, clean it's port of Carbon buildup. No plug wires but, coil packs and injectors con get expensive. Awesome ride, if you have a bad back as I do it's perfect. Maintained it'll go to 350,000 mi. easy. Oh yeah! Replace back air suspension w/spring conversion kit ( springs ) they will last the life of the car. Cheaper than fixing multi part expensive air system.

If purchasing this car make sure it has low mileage. While the body seems to hold up well (it looks beautiful), suspension parts seem fragile (tie rods, ball joints) albeit I bought the car with 140k miles on it for $2,400. In addition to suspension parts, I've had to replace oil pan gaskets, plus spark plugs and coils (which are attached to each spark plug wire), in addition to an alternator, this after about five thousand additional miles. My biggest problem, of which I am facing now, is a transmission breakdown. I'm not sure if I want to replace the trans or cut my losses. A dealer offered me $600 for it as is. I previously drove a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu which I was the only owner and which gave me little problem and is still running now for my son. Uber or trans, that is the question-I'm leaning toward uber.

I have owned Lincolns, cadys, buicks, an impala, a Taurus, a Ford LTD, and have driven at length a camry solara and a Cady fleetwood Brougham from the early 80s, and a Cady coup devile from 78. RIDE-- This car has the best ride for a long haul of any recent modern car i have been in. I prefer the 78 and 80s cadys for their spongy soft rides !! I have a lot of body aches and pains and so if you have lots of injuries i recommend this car. Germans like hard stiff rides. For the money, under 3000 us dollars i purchased this car in september 2013 with 71,000 miles. It has no problems and is serene.

This is my third car, and a hand-me-down from my father. I have been driving it for 3 years now. I hated it when I first got it, as a big, boat like sedan was not fitting for the outdoors man in me. However, it's slowly grown on me. 175,00 miles on it currently, second transmission was replaced at 105,000. The air ride suspension went out on it and replaced with struts. The engine is strong and reliable. The 4 speed transmission was a horrible implementation. It's a beast in the snow, never failed up the ski mountain, and I have nicknamed it "The Snow Boat". Overall, compared to similar age and mileage cars I have seen, this has been, and I swallow my pride to say, superb.

I bought a 1999 from an elderly woman a couple years ago with 40,000 miles on it and have only put $800. dollars into it after 50,000 miles for new Michelins and rotors and pads. Minor glitches I have fixed myself, but no cronic problems. The car now has almost 90,000 miles on it. Am trying to find another one with the center console shifter and a 2002 model.

We purchased this car 5 years ago and its been the most reliable car we ever had.Its got 152 K miles and no problems. The looks of this car are timeless.I can't believe Edmunds calls it "boxy" what? Its got 4.6 lt v8 @275 hp and gets 25 mpg hwy.Need i say more?Awesome car but transmissions were kind of fragile in this car so make sure you change that trans oil no later then every 30K miles.

We bought our 1999 Continental about 2 years ago for $7,500. Low mileage on the car when we bought it. We've had no trouble with the car at all. Good power, nice-looking, decent gas mileage, large trunk, comfortable for 5, just the right size.

Have 1999 Lincoln Continental, approx. 215,000 miles, second owner - bought with 22,000 miles. Very comfortable during long highway driving but expensive to keep up. On 3rd transmission, replaced water pump, replaced inner and outer tie rods and a bunch of other suspension parts, found out today that it needs ball joints, new serpentine belt and more suspension parts. Estimate I've put about $ 8000. In repairs since 2001 purchase for 21k. Body has held up well, but mechanically it's dollaring me to death.

Lincoln started sucking it up when they redesigned this car. It's got a good, reliable V8 engine but a 4 speed manual chokes the power. It's luxurious, good stock stereo, and relatively comfortable for long drives. If you are nice to it, it's nice to you. It's no sports car, it's your typical boat of a luxury car with a big engine. I'm not shedding a tear at their discontinuation.

I bought 2 used continentals. Bought the 1998 model 7 years ago with 50,000 miles, now has 114,000 miles. Only had to replace a coil pack, spark plugs, & spark plug boots. 25 mpg highway, 17 mpg city, awesome car. I bought the 1999 model 3 years ago with 108,000 miles. The original owner towed a big boat, I expect he used overdrive while towing, transmission had to be rebuilt at 125,000 miles and rear sway bar bushings had to be replaced. Replaced several coil packs, spark plug boots, and the rear view mirror because the compass failed.

This is the best auto I have ever had in my long lifetime! There are just two suggestions for improvement: 1. the placement of the speedometer is not visabble enough. 2. the headrest is not placed right I owned a Lincoln Town Car prior to this car and of course, the ride is not as comfortable as the Town Car

Tranny fluid must be changed at 50k mile intervals with new filter, not just flushed. Front seat backs have lousy lateral support. Nice inside & outside style. Suspension air bags way better than my 1990 Continental. Rear doors definitely are harder to open from outside than front doors. Compass and "Day-night" fluid in rear view mirror just failed. Top 1/2 of mirror is always bright & bottom 1/2 is dark. With 140k miles, no big repairs yet, although the air bag light is on since when I reclined the driver's seat all the way down - must have pinched a wire. Important: Wet sand the plastic headlight lenses with 1600 grit or finer to restore that new look.

The Lincoln Continental has been one of the most enjoyable, low cost per mile luxury autos I've ever owned. It now has over 130,000 miles on the car and does not leak anything - still gets 25-26 mpg on the highway. It has been one of the least expensive luxury cars to maintain that I've ever owned. I put Michelin Hydroedge tires on the car and it handles better than when new! Wish Lincoln still manufactured this automobile. Not too large, not too small. Wonderful automobile!

Bought the car six years ago. It had 45,000 miles at that time. It now has 228,000 miles. I ran the vehicle to work 75 miles each way in snow country and it never let me down. Only thing I have had to replace is tires, and water pump. Other than that vehicle has run great. Check transmission light has come a few times but vehicle had over 200,000 prior to this issue. Great car, if I can find another one when this one stops I will buy another one just like it. I have driven Ford products for over forty years. I am an American and buy American cars, not Japanese cars built in America.

I had to purchase a new car after my 89 Buick bit the dust. I shopped around and found this at a local dealer ship and they had an excellent price on it. The car was purchased with 80K on the dial and it is now up to 90K. I have had two MAJOR problems and those are as follows: 1) PATS module that tells the car that the key is in the ignition failed costing 400. 2) A bad airbag sensor in the passenger airbag costing 350. Overall it has been a pretty decent vehicle.

We love this vehicle. We use it as a family car and there is plenty of room for two children with lots of trunk space. Milage is good for a V8 at 22 miles per gallon. The vehicle handles great and runs great. Only thing that has needed to be done after 126000 miles was brakes and wheelbearings. Love the vehicle, hard to compare to others.

A lot of (used) car for the money. Many convenience/luxury features. Nice ride. Powerful InTech V8 engine easily overcomes Michelin tires, but traction control works pretty well. The engine is bulletproof, but transmission fluid MUST be changed every 15K miles to maintain shift quality and if you expect the transmission to last more than 50,000 miles. Handling is decent but not up to Lexus/Benz. Quality is quite good for American made car, but not up to the Japanese highline models. I would never buy a new one (even if they still made them) - too much depreciation - but for $9000-$13000 you won't find a nicer car with as many features.

I absolutely love my 1999 Lincoln Continental, however, I have had an annoying transmission 'alert' from the computer indicating a problem and then obvious lurching at 30-40 mph. Dealer checked it out a half dozen times at least and it is still going on. It is under warranty and we are dealing now on a new transmission to correct the problem.

I did buy it used but it only had 12,000 miles. I am sorry they quit making the Continentals. It was a good size I think the Town Car is just too big.

I've owned many Ford products but this one is the best on luxury and the worst on performance quality. It is the end of an era. With 71,000 I'm replacing a transmission $2200.00. Ford can't make up it's mind to rebuild or replace, duh, the torque converter failed and ruined the transmission and they can't decied what to do???? Power seat tracks that failed, outside power mirrors failed, and two of eight coils failed at $120.00 each to replace at less that 50K miles. I never had that much trouble with a Mercury Topaz with 200K miles or my F-150 with 125K miles, or my Mercury Cougar with 130Kmiles.

In the two years that I have owned this pre-owned car, I have had nothing but headaches. Luckily the car was under warranty when the A/C went up. Now the warranty has expired, I am up the creek with no paddle having to get a transmission that doesn't have 65K, on it rebuilt. This is a sorry excuse for quality. This is my first American car, and it will definitely be my last FORD. FORD motor needs to get their priorities in order. This car is a good- looking hunk of junk.

After having owned this used vehicle for a year, I can say it is a good used car purchase for the value. Drove from Michigan to Houston, TX and back. It is comfortable on long drives and does well at highway speeds. It is sporty on stop and go traffic as well. Bought extended warranty from Warrantybynet and still have not used it. It is nice to have the peace of mind. Now has 72K miles on it. Plan to keep it for a while to get return on investment. It has features that a similarly priced new vehicle would not have. The V8 Intech engine has a good track record and it has been reliable for me.

I bought the 99 Lincoln new, and ownership has been a nightmare. I have had a bad alternator, a bad AC compressor, bad fuel pump, and a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension. Each visit to the shop was a multi-week excursion. It took the service department 5 weeks to figure out what was wrong with the fuel pump, and 3 visits to find out that the problem with the AC was the compressor. The transmission is acting like it is ready to go now. Thankfully, it is a lease, and Lincoln gets it back next week! I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy a Lincoln product again.
