after 16 years of ownership, here's my take on my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo V8 4.7L AUTO/PS/PB/AC/etc. THE GOOD: exterior paint job is EXCELLENT and shows 0 signs of wear ... hats of to the paint department at chrysler on this one ... the interior ... excellent shape (no leather seats, just fabric) ... dash board - not 1 crack ... no weathering ... the interior has held up over the years and is in EXCELLENT shape. 4.7V8 Engine ... good power, been very reliable (1 exhaust manifold replaced), transmission solid ... just a sensor that went that made it shifting from 2-3 gear slip ... of course ive ALWAY ALWAYS ALWAYS changed my oil at 3,500 miles and done the tranny FLUSH on scheduled basis. visibility is awesome, some you CANNOT find today except in a subaru forester. towing is awesome. the size (particularly the length) is spot-on at 181" ... today's mid-sized SUV's routinely occupy the 190+" range ... seats are COMFORTABLE and still hold up - not great on LONG journeys though (500+ mile days). fuel economy is low, but not different than what i expected and it runs on 85 octane. THE BAD: electrical, sensors, water pump, radiator split, CV boots, leaking axles, AC, oil pump sensor, PCM - 3 times thus far and counting ... cannot but an OEM PC M must buy it remanufactored from less than reputable 3rd party suppliers, electrical wires between door jams fail/frayed, sensors, sensors, sensors. all these failures started occuring around the 90k mile mark ... and have consistently nickel and dimed me all the way to the 141k mark (where i'm currently at). i cannot trust the jeep to go anywhere other than locally in town ... and having paid close attention to the tranny and electrical issues on the '14 JGC (and the fact that chrysler corporate fatcat exec's elimanated the rear flip window, something i use EVERY DAY), i'll be running with the 2017 4runner when it comes in december '16 ... overall, the jeep has met my needs, but for people who keep their vehicles for a LONG time, dependability/reliability/durability is lacking.

KEEP ROLLING!!!

Brought mine at 60,000 from Mancari now at 306,000 miles only replaced water pump ,blend door fix ,radiator and normal replacement items. So far no major engine or transmission work ,just oil changes, muffler system and I think with the oil cooler for trans the reason transmission is smoothly .Body great shape hopefully no major work or will retire it and purchase another jeep ,already have a 2009 limited with 131,000 and also running great now at 318,000 ,only going to now start looking at 2014-2016 grand Cherokee limited ,retiring 99 if any major issues occurs. Body excellent shape but time to move on

Loved it

I was reading other reviews laughing and had to add my own. I LOVED my V8 Limited and wouldn't have given her up for anything. She's a five star ride, handles like a dream, parks great in the city, goes absolutely anywhere off road, handles snow, ice, mud, fallen trees, and flooding with ease. All the gremlins everyone else had, I had too. Seat motor died, window motor died, had to fix the AC, and the rear tail lights never quite worked no matter what you did. All those little mechanical/electrical issues didn't matter. I bought her at 120K and passed 200K before a drunk driver took her out.

All around perfect vehicle!

After such bad luck and poor choice in vehicle purchases I feel like I finally found a gem! Purchased my 1999 JGC from a relative, me being the 2nd owner and it just rolled over 175k miles. Lucky for me it came from the south, as I live outside of Detroit and our roads and weather eat cars up. I love everything about my Jeep, it rides like a truck, but feels smooth like a luxury car. It's had overall minor replacements done, all routine work. Planning on replacing the motor in the next 6 months, as the rod bearings are just starting to act up. Other than that and some foggy head lamps, its in stellar shape. My next vehicle purchase will definitely be another Jeep!

I purchased my 1999 Jeep in 2013 it has only caused me two decent problems. One being the cooling system after replacing the hoses, radiator, thermostat and the thermostat housing unit, temp sensors and relays and the cooling fan I still had problems with overheating, it was then I realized my fan was not kicking on at all with no return on electrical parts I was out of money. The 99 is also the year that they made different types of cooling fans and the assembly to switch out cooling fans from mechanical to electric. Instead of paying hundreds to fix an electric problem I simply went to a junk yard and pulled a mechanical fan from a 98 jeep and swapped mine out. it cost me 40 bucks.

I bought my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (6 cyl.) in 2011 with 162,000 miles on it to use as a work truck. I'm a construction contractor and used this truck accordingly. For the price I've paid it is the BEST money ever spent. I've been told that the in line 6 cylinder engine is the only way to go in that it will last for 300,000 miles. It is now at 200,000+ and runs great. There is some slipping in the transmission into 3rd gear but it stops when the engine is warm. I plan on driving it till it goes and will replace with another. It is a great beat around truck for me and I love this vehicle and will likely by a 2013 Grand Cherokee with the latest body style etc...

I bought mine new and five years later the engine blew up and after a new engine the transmission went. It was beyond repair and now just sits in my driveway rotting away. It is also extremely uncomfortable, I didn't want it to begin with but I was suckered into it. Never will I buy another Jeep product in my life, they are so unreliable and are listed for the worst quality amung cars. Replaced it with a 2004 Cadillac Cts, also bought new, and now nine years later and about 185,000 miles no problems and still rides like new. I knew I should have just stuck with General Motors.

Great Investment!

Purchased this car used in 1999 - had about 127,000 miles on it. I've got 175,000 now and I'm making the first major repair. Replaced the radiator last year, it was cheap and easy - this year it needs a new motor. Outside of that, I'm a storm chaser and have had this poor Jeep at 100+mph on dirt back roads in heavy rains and hail and it is the most amazing vehicle I've ever owned. I also have family through the state and have traveled frequently - great gas mileage, both city and highway and the comfort of this car is amazing. It's flexibility is great too - having added a laptop and some other components for my storm chasing. Just a great great car and I'll buy another and another!

Bought mine a year ago with 85,000 miles and put on about 20,000 since then. Replaced brakes all the way around including calipers. Replaced front drive shaft to resolve "clunking" noise. Was able to use part from salvage yard. Replaced CD changer also with part from salvage yard. Has 4.7 V8 and it is very strong. Its been off-road a few times and this Jeep is very capable compared to other stock 4x4 with Quadra-Drive II awd system.

I've had my Jeep GC LMTD V8 since 2003. I purchased the vehicle with 79,000 miles and am now turning 200,000 miles with only limited repairs. I have had to replace the transmission once, the alternator once and the power window motor on the front passenger side once. All of these repairs were performed at around 150,000 miles. My Jeep has been all around the country and most recently from AZ to NE and has never broken down. I have had the brake problems, but this was remedied by a competent mechanic in Mesa AZ. Overall I would say this is one of the most reliable, toughest vehicles I have ever owned. I would definitely purchase another one.

Here lately i haven't been too happy with the car seeing how it only has 164000. still trying to figure out how to fix the door issue. if anyone has any advice id appreciate it.

I would have to say that this is the best jeep ever built, I bought it a few years ago with 100,000 miles it currently have over 260,000 miles. It is in great shape minus the only problem I have come across and will complain about is the gas mileage I'm glad I did not purchase the V8 version! I cant honestly say the only thing I have ever did to it was the reg services and a thermostat which is common.Other than that a great first car, Now proudly am buying a new Jeep Liberty I hope it holds up as well as my JGC limited , truly is a great car would recommend it to anyone. I am a little weary about the location of the gas tank though. Also it goes great in the snow never been stuck in up to 3fsnow

I bought my Black on Black Leather Limited Grand Cherokee from a co- worker who bought it new. It has 108,000 miles on its 4.7 Liter V8. The co-workers husband is a Chrysler Certified Mechanic, so I really found a Diamond in the rough since the 4.7's sometimes have major problems due to lack of oil changes. I love the Jeep. People always complain about the gas mileage, well people its a V8 Suv. Its NOT a Honda or Toyota or Hyundai. And none of those cars have what a Jeep has anyway. I would definitely recommend getting one to anyone who asks, just be warned that its not a hybrid.

I bought my 1999 JGC from a friend (third owner in all). Just clocked 161,000 miles. Outside of maintenance items (battery, brakes, tires, shocks, fluid changes, a/c charge) the car has needed to have the steering linkage and front axles replaced for a total of $450. As for fuel economy I am not sure how others are driving but driving like a mad man I am around 17.5-18.5 mpg and reasonable driving I am getting 20-21 mpg. The drivetrain is still strong and all the little things seem to be holding up. Alloy wheels clear coat is faded & flaking. The starter is beginning to struggle a bit so that may be the next thing to get fixed. All together for about a $4,500 investment a great find

This was my first car, and I'm actually selling it today. All-around, it's a great car; however, the gas mileage is horrible. My girlfriend gets 30-40 mpg in her Hyundai, and I trail behind at a wimpy 13-17 mpg. Not to mention, it takes quite a sum of money to put gas into it. Air bag sensor is faulty and beeps as it pleases. I had to replace some trans. sensors (had trouble shifting to 2nd and 3rd gears); driver's side dual-climate ctrl didn't work (found out this is common in '99s). Being 10-11 years old, though, it was still a good first car. The leather seats got way too hot in the summertime.

Bought new 1n 1999, all options available including 4.7 ltr v-8, have driven it all over. I have about 160,000 miles now, most miles in cold weather climate., am now in south, ac just went out, not compressor but a couple smaller parts., been repaired along with vent door problem, had 100,000 mile warranty, so all minor problems were taken care of by dealer then. Still a daily driver. My 4th Jeep.

I bought my jeep brand new in 1998 with less than 50 miles on it. Today 5/31/2010 I just hit 160,000 miles. I have never had a bit of problems with my Grand Cherokee. The A/C still blows ice cold. i live on a no winter maintained road and I have never been stuck anywhere. It takes the snow in a stride and has never let me or my family down. I don't like the 05-10 Generation grand Cherokee I feel as mine is better built. My Grand Cherokee is fully loaded with options except the 4.7 v8 but I find the 4.0 more than adequate and pulls a boat up the boat launch with no effort. I really like the 2011 maybe it's time for a trade in. I still trust my jeep to go anywhere I want it to.

Whole family has owned Jeeps for 20 plus years now. I am on my 4th grand cherokee. Only because I like to upgrade. Made 200k on every one of them between everyone in my family with only minor repairs. Conclusion, most people simply do not know how to properly care for their cars. Overdue on oil and servicing dates, driving their cars like they are in the daytona 500. Driving on after finding a potential problems. Not treating the interiors (leather, dash) etc. Sure, their are some lemons, but as a mechanic I am shocked when people bring their cars in in most cases.

We have used our Grand Cherokee as our main family transportation for almost seven years now. Bought it used with 69000 from a private owner. We use the 4wd regularly on our mini-farm and camping trips. We've never had any 4wd issues. Rebuilt the trans. for the first time at 190000. Other work Ive done other than the regular maint. is a water pump, brake booster, trans. speed sensor. We've been very pleased with the 4.0 in other Jeeps we had too. It's a big inline 6 so do not expect great mileage, but its got reliability and performance. The key to Jeeps from my experience (this is my 3rd) is keeping up with the routine maint. especially oil/fluid changes. Have fun, get outdoors!

I purchased this vehicle used from a private owner. When I purchased the vehicle, I knew that I would need to replace a few parts but did not suspect just how many I would actually have to replace. I have since had to replace all shocks, all rotors, pads, calipers, the muffler, a steering damper, all tie rod ends, an EVAP canister, both hood supports, the rear windshield wipers motor and both headlights. I still need to replace the driver side ball joints, and something within the vacuum system. I put a K&N air filter in & high-flow muffler, with absolutely zero difference in gas mileage. Have constant minor and foreshadowing problems, that always stay true. Would not recommend buying ever.

Experienced slipping with the transmission, but such problems are to be expected with high mileage vehicles.

We bought this car used for my son. We have replaced tie rods, cv boots, transmission, air conditioning, brakes front and back, axle shaft. Now we found out the rear axles are shot and the front needs ball joints and new cv boots. We have put a fortune in this car in 3 years thinking that after all the expense we may be able to drive it to get our moneys worth. We are now trading it in for the cash for clunkers and it makes me sick since it has all these new items and the body is in great shape. We can't put another $1800 that we were just quoted to fix it. This car had to be a lemon when designed.

Purchased new online in '99. Had to replace front & rear differentials shortly after warranty expired. Lost arbitration w/ shop that used wrong diff. fluid due to Jeep bulletin. Replaced condenser, evaporator, shocks (twice), rotors, pads, yada, yada, yada... Does this vehicle have a seal that doesn't leak? CD changer quit working & front passenger speaker blew long ago. Transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd during the winter... likely a viscosity issue as dealer can't fix w/o pulling out tranny which I won't pay for. Check engine light has been on for 2+ yrs now. Dealer won't cut wire. Got 132,000 miles with mostly new parts so hoping for 200,000 miles. Repair bills mounting...

I bought this 02 Grand Cherokee over 2 years ago now and it's been good. Had to replace front rotors and brake pads, spark plugs, tires and oil of course. Put on over 25000 miles now and very reliable for me. A rear axle seal is bad now and something is making noise with the AWD system. Inline 6 was a great motor, now the 3.7 v-6 isn't nearly as good but that's why Chrysler went bankrupt. Love the styling, roomy and powerful, handles well in snow or off road. Headlight lenses clouded up too. Just starting to rust 10 years down the line. Go get one!

We owned a 1995 Grand Cherokee, V-8 for 3 or 4 years. Bought it used and drove it until it had 250,000 miles on it. It began stalling out under all conditions and NO ONE could find the answer. We then bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee with 110,000 miles, and it has been a piece of junk! Our friends have a 1999 Grand and our problems mirror each others, costing hundreds of dollars for each repair. To replace power window mechanism; $400+ each window. Tail light unit; $250+ each. Front drive shaft (new design for that year); $500+. We are done repairing! We want a different Jeep Grand, but to find the year with the least problems.

I bought this Jeep to downsize from a Chevy Suburban, not to go lower quality. Brake rotors replace within 6 months. Differentials are LOUD all the time. Heating and Air selector sometimes switches to different zones, sometimes doesn't. Three water pump replacements in 2 years. Warning light came on yesterday "Low Coolant" - so this is never going to end. The transmission hesitates from 2nd to 3rd gear, I don't even want to talk about the trouble of going to 4WD and back. I have to make sure I have a clear area before switching 4WD/2WD. However, I like the looks, I love the interior driving position and center console. The engine is still strong and torquey.

Bought this 4X4 Jeep in 2005 with 55,000 miles. Loved it when I bought it but started having problems about 6 months later. Had to replace output speed sensor, water pump, security sensor, door lock actuators, door checks, cvt boots, radiator sensor all under 75,000 miles. Gas mileage is terrible for a 6 cylinder averaging about 13 mpg. AC is ice cold and heat works very well and quick. Loved the outside temperature gauge with compass, average mpg, and fuel range. Very comfortable and roomy and fun to drive. Just sold it with 85,000 miles. Good fun vehicle if you have a warranty and don't have to worry about these problems.

The Bad: AC problems common (some easily fixed for DIY) Brake system very poor design (cause rotors to be replaced more often) Radio system starts out as a plus until you crank it than it becomes a negative because there is no band pass thus you blow the tweeters Window motors go out quite frequently (4 sets on mine now) Brake lights have a fault (have you not noticed this on other jeeps on the road yet) Not easily fixed or tracked down Strut system sucks The Good: It's paid off

I brought my Jeep with 111 miles. In the beginning I had some break issues and some repairs where I found out later the dealership was ripping me off. I did a lot of travel with this jeep and I received I thought excellent mileage. I've been able to travel a max of 4.5 hrs on one tank of gas and I like to speed. AC is still kicking, but driver seat needs to be reupholstered. Other than that not a bad deal considering I've been able to keep it this long and its still pretty when cleaned.

I bought this grand Cherokee back in 1999. It turned out to be the most unreliable car I had. The dealer took it back and I will never get a dodge/Jeep again. I think the main issue was with the new 4wd system they introduced that year. It cause many drivetrain issues. Look at all the recalls for this vehicle. My Jeep had all those issues.

Program car purchased 2002, 36k, haggled dealer down to $15k after much haggling and trade of a 1993 Isuzu trooper (was a great SUV, but very high maintenance costs just like my other SUV Mercedes ml320). Back to the Jeep, where do I begin? Brake issues just like everybody else in warranty issues now out of warranty issues (mechanic tells me due again after 20 months). Problems linkage sticking 4wd transfer case, back many times for repair the usual fix lubricated and claimed all well still sticks today! Very hard to take in and out of 4wd without a hassle! Remember it's an SUV cause the mpg (15 around town less than 20 on highway) are tough now at $4.00 a gallon, trading it in today $3500?

Bought my Jeep with 69k, now rolling 95k. Only minor problems, nothing I needed a shop for. Fan relay the most recent. HVAC smells of mildew & AC doesn't blow cold anymore & doesn't hold a charge. Seems like every car I've bought always looses AC after a year :( buy hey, it's a jeep, who needs AC :) This is my daily driver, driving 100 a week/2x month. Never had any problems with the engine & spark plugs are easy to change on the I6 engine. I would buy another jeep, just not a new one

Well, I'm shocked at the other reviews but not surprised. The things that happened to the others are just starting to happen to mine at 184,000 miles. Except for a serpentine belt, tires, oil, etc. this machine has been a real champ. I've totally enjoyed driving it. I love the sound system, interior comfort, handling, and am ok with the mileage. I tow my boat, no problem. The differentials never posed a problem until Jiffy Lube put the incorrect fluid in. Then they started chattering when I steered.....that was fixed at their expense. I just replaced the tranny and transfer case so I am pleased that I can keep it for another 8-10 years. Never had a tune up or spark plug changed and still runs

Transfer case went bad at 98K miles. Dealer wanted $800 to replace transfer case. Had transfer case repaired by private dealer by replacing the "timing belt" inside the transfer case for $200. Only other problem is with the A/C...the A/C appears to be a known problem with easy repair. Otherwise, the vehicle is fun to drive; MPG is a little less than advertised. Very comfortable vehicle with great towing capacity.

Still rugged and fun.

Repairs are a little more pricey but that's what you get when you buy a quality vehicle, quality repair work. The gas mileage I'm sure is comparable to any other mid-sized SUV. Purchased vehicle with 49k on it in 2005. Now has 78k on it and we've had to: Replace rotors and brakes, front and rear; rear axle seals and bearings; front drive shaft boot; passenger side window module; drivers side rear & passenger front locks; drivers side break light assembly (because of short in internal wiring/sautering); dash speakers keep blowing; fan clutch; hood struts; on date of purchase had a rear drive shaft seal replaced. Shortly after purchase transfer case/rear end started making a clunking noise from stop and go. Not a scratch on it, almost as clean as a new one. Jeep is garaged and full service every 3000 miles. Only driven to work and back with occational road trip.

My Jeep was great until after 75,000 miles. It assumes it has no second hand value. Car hesitates at 100,000 miles, doesn't take charge on the highway any more. Improve on the electrical constructions. Airbags and check engine signs go off all the time. Please improve on those, if the airbag and engine lights come on without annoying beeps/noise it will be tolerated. Begin to use high quality materials for we Jeep lovers. The annoying thing is that anytime its serviced, cost of repair run in $700- thousands. There are too many repairs done that I cannot mention 'cause of time. Jeep company can do better!

Outside of thermostat, and a drivers side window motor the car has been driving perfect and the only maintenance I preformed so far, was oil changes and breaks. Oh, the serpentine belt was changed too, but only because annoying kids from Jiffy Lube insisted on it. Love my Jeep! My only concern now is the fact hat I have to make up my mind what to get next!

We've had this car since it was new. At about 80K mi, had to rebuild rear differential. At about 125K mi had to rebuilt entire rear end again, along with shocks. I was told my dealer that this was a "known problem". Car engine is strong, interior has fallen apart in hot Virginia summers - vinyl has split and cracked. I am disappointed that this car won't last much longer - I thought Jeeps were good for 200K.

I wanted to buy a '97/98. Instead, I fell in love with the '99 styling. I've regretted this for the last 8.5 years. The locks lock/unlock at random, AC fan whines at random, the car shut off while driving at 60mph because the computer didn't recognize the chip in the key, the engine fan relay drained the battery twice, CV boots crack easily, the transmission shifts into 2nd too early, the dashboard and console lights don't always turn on, and the door upholstery cracked. Jeep was only able to fix the chip problem. I'll never buy another Jeep.

We have owned our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Laredo since Spring of 2000 and it has been an excellent buy. We have taken it in the mountains of NH, VT, MA, ME & PA. It has performed well on the highway, as well as inter-city driving. It has never been garaged and has no rust. After having this vehicle to the dealer for warped rotors at least 3 times and to other mechanics twice thereafter, I bought a custom set of drilled and slotted rotors at 60k miles, now I have 130k miles on it and have not had a problem. Daimler Chrysler was "no" help at all and refused to acknowledge that they have a problem with these rotors. I traded a 1995 GMC Jimmy which was total junk for this and it has turned out to be better junk that's more comfortable. I've owned this vehicle since new, I do not intend to ever buy another car by Daimler Chrysler.

I haven't had this car too long, but long enough to "rate it." It's a great SUV, comfortable, not too bad on gas but right now it's in the shop for the crankshaft sensor, a part recalled in 2004 and the dealership isn't honoring it. I haven't had any real problems other than a speed sensor about two months ago when I first bought it. My sunroof tends to leak and it is really annoying. Other than that I love my Jeep and I wouldn't choose anything else. I also have a noise in the front left tire area, I'm thinking maybe the control arm or a ball joint, but it's expected, it has 86,000 miles on it and I only paid $8,500 for it. It's a Limited, fully loaded with EVERY option and accessory.

It is an excellent car for my wife to lug the groceries or carry her Avon products. It is a comfortable ride for longer trips, 6-8 hours, and plenty of packing space. Pulls my small trailer just fine. Brakes and steering work fine, the ride is comfortable. It still feels new after 70,000+ miles. Interior gadgets are easy, such as the seat maneuvering or seat belts. My gas mileage isn't bad for a 6 cylinder, about 26 mpg. Maintenance has been minimal. It is a pleasure to take out and drive, plenty of pick up speed. The only problem we have is with the dealership maintenance

My wife and I have owned four other Jeeps prior to this one, all of which we were very pleased with. We bought this one and also bought the extended warranty. We have many mechanical problems with this one that we didn't have with the others including new transmission, fuel pump & regulator, axle bearings, taillight assemblies shorting out, warped rotors, calipers that stick, and wind noise. Fortunately, everything has been covered under the warranty. Overall, it has a rock-solid motor, good styling & good value. I am not unhappy with the car, but I would be if we didn't have the warranty. Our warranty runs out in two more years, and we will probably sell it just before that.

Wow, I can't believe how lucky I've been. My Grand Cherokee Ltd has been great with only the brake issue ever a problem. I've been through 2 sets of rotors and pads in 4 years. I drive it fast and hard all the time and love the way it handles except for the side to side rocking over bumps which takes some getting used to. I have the 6 cylinder and AWD (not Quadra that came with the V8's) and my mpg seems to hover around 16-17 except in really cold weather when it drops to 14. Tows my 20' boat with ease. Upright comfy seating, leather is high quality, midsized (think station wagon). I think it's better looking (the '99 version) than the latest model. I liked my '93 Grand Cherokee Limited too. I have put new brakes and rotors on this vehicle TWICE, a front drive shaft, rear wiper motor, CV boots on the front TWICE, front radiator fan TWICE, rear CV boots, and a few other little things not worth mentioning, but you get the idea. Jeep equals junk, and that's the bottom line. I will never own another Daimler-Chrysler product again, and neither will my family or friends. I purchased my Jeep new in 1999 with 50 miles. I now have 133,000 miles. I had a new transmission replaced the first month i owned it in 1999. I have also replaced the brakes front and back numerous times (recalled in 1999) including front calipers this year. I have fixed the rear suspension differential twice. The water pump in 2004. My key doesn't open the driver door and hasn't in 4 years so I have to use the keyless remote. The drivers side seat is broken. In spite of all the money and repairs made my Jeep still rides just like it's brand new. I have kept it serviced well over the years but I just don't think this vehicle is made to last. This will be my last Chrysler Jeep vehicle.

I bought the '99 model after testing it Carmax. So far we have had 2 power window motors replaced, the water pump, the door lock system failed, 2 speakers and the brakes twice. I can't keep front brakes on this thing. The good news is that we bought the extended warranty ( the mechanics have no clue what they are doing by the way). On the bright side, it is good for long trips and has enough room for my family of 4 and all our stuff. The four wheel drive works well also. As soon as we can afford it, I am trading it for a Ford F150 pickup.

Our Jeep Grand Cherokee is the best overall vehicle for the money we have ever experienced. It is particularly easy to operate in traffic and park in tight places. The continuous 4 wheel drive allows the freedom of off-road maneuvering at the ranch. Plenty of road power. The mileage is actually less than our '97 Cadillac with the Northstar engine system. The Jeep is consistently around 19 MPG sometimes a little less. Love it.

Bought the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 80,000 and have been totally happy with the vehicle. Even at 6 years and 80K it looks and drives like new. Lots of power and still gets 25 MPG on the highway. Turns more heads than any other $9,000 vehicle I know of.

I have had three Jeeps now, two of which were Wranglers. Although I still love the Wranglers, they can't compare to the everyday capabilities of my Cherokee. I have a '99 Limited and have yet to encounter any problems. The power is great coming from the 4.7L engine and the overall quality is superior. It goes great in the snow. I've had to pull out Blazers before in places that my Jeep wouldn't even bat an eye at. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned and will definitely buy the new '05 Hemi within the next few weeks.

I have not had any major problems with my Jeep. Only that there has been a loud clunking sound like the transmission when I start or stop. I have brought this to many Jeep dealers and was told this is normal...it is the quadra drive. Seems like such a feature should not be so embarrassing to have. Also, have replaced MANY sets of brakes. It does have great towing power and get-up. If you like a cushioned ride in a vehicle that feels like it is attached to the wheel by elastics this is for you. And forget interior room, especially in the back seat.

I bought my Jeep used with 35,000 mi. I test drove 2, and the other one had more pep (both were V8's). I now have 69,000 mi and the brakes have "hot spots" that cause the front end to shake. Suggestion is to upgrade to racing rotors ($$$). The radiator still leaks after being replaced. The turning radius is poor, and on hard turns it makes an awful noise. Truck looks great though! Cargo space is good. Needs shoulder belts for middle rear seat; only accomodates 2 children in booster seats. Mileage averages about 16. Thinking of upgrading to Durango to get extra seating with similar style and mileage. Audio controls on steering wheel are fun. Even with the problems, I will still miss my truck.

Great off road and winter driving vehicle. Have a 100,000 miles on it and very satisified with overall performance, reliability and looks. Brakes were initially a nightmare with front rotors and pads changed three times (once covered under warranty). Cruise control out twice. PCM went bad at 74000. I just bought a 99JGC limited will all the fixins. I researched this vehicle and Chrysler thoroughly before purchance. this vehicle is a jeep -not a car and won't respond the best driving to work and back everyday. It is built for offroading and rides like a jeep -not a passenger car. Most of the complaints here come from ignorance of how to drive the vehicle and maintaining it . Some are lemons but folks dont seem to understand that u need to buy a honda civic to goto work and back -not an engineered quadra track 4 wheel drive off road devise. If u drive it like a car thru constant stopping and starting in urban jungle traffic u will wreck the rotors and the dual transmission.

I suggest that if you buy a Jeep, you also buy an extended warranty. I paid around 1,500 for my warranty and within the last 2 years, my differential went, door locks went, etc... Total repair costs covered by the warranty are approx $3,000. The best thing is that the warranty has another 3 years to it. I will be sure to sell it before it expires.

Run for you life! This is the worst SUV on the market! Problems from literaly day one. Black smoke poured out the back after owning for one day. Company would not diagnose correctly until warenty had expired! Thank you Chrysler! The brakes ate up our entire savings, the transmission was my right kidney, and not to mention the new engine we had to put in it. The front door does not lock, the windows leak, the hood does not stay up by its self. Please what ever you do DO NOT buy a 1999 Jeep! It is by far the worst decision my husband and I have ever made! Well I've had to replace the ignition cylinder. The driver door power lock is acting up, and at 61,000 miles had to replace the engine (4.0). Thankfully it was covered under the extended warranty. Rear diff is noisy. They get you with style over reliability, but that should be well known by now.

I purchased this vehicle with 50,000 miles and 13000 miles later, I have no major complaints. It rides nice and the air is amazing...a very high quality to have for a Florida driver. I have had a few minor problems that have been outrageously expensive to repair, and the gas mileage could be much better (about 15mpg in town), but I should have known what to expect when switching from a little Lebaron to a 4X4 SUV. Overall, I would buy another Jeep and would recommend them to anyone interested in a decent SUV for a low price. The 4X4 is the excellent quality that is typical of a Jeep. Glides through Florida sugar sand like it's on asphalt and leaps right out of a 2WD hole.

This has been a great family car for a very active family. My kids are now teanagers and we bought this car to replace the minivan. We take it off road camping, drive in deep snow, rain, and have driven accross the country. I still like it five years later! Very little has gone wrong with it. Electric lock on the back hatch failed and weatherstripping on one door came loose. It's a heavy car, so breaks don't last as long as on a sedan. The 6 cyl. has all the power you need. The interior is a little tight for four people with gear on trips, but so much of the driving happens around town I couldn't see buying a larger SUV with a V8.

Awful! 60,000 miles and the brake system (pads, calipers and rotors) replaced twice; rear differential & axle replaced twice (under warranty fortunately); transmission replaced once. $35,000 cars should not fall apart like this. Partially my fault- should not have trusted claims that quality of American cars had improved. I love America but will never purchase American designed/built auto again.

I've had more problems with this vehicle. The a/c went out. I've replaced 3 sets of front brake rotors, new front axles. Now it's making a loud noise in the front end when you get to about 20 MPH and up. The dealer told me it was the transfer case. Someone else told me it's the front differential. The door locks failed. I'm getting rid of this one and won't buy another.

I've been pretty happy overall. 15.5 MPG average could be better. Off road you can't beat it stock off the showroom it handles great off road. The 4.0 six has enough power for this vehicle. The V8 is a gas guzzler. I have had to repair the front disc brake rotors replaced twice, water pump, transfer case leak between transmission and rear differential carrier bearings. First set of Goodyear Wranglers lasted over 40K miles. I recommend these tires. Weather strip at rear passenger door causing noise. The infinity cd stereo is great.

I bought this 8 cyl. Jeep at three years old, 29k miles, for just over half its original price (paid $18k), after deciding that $40k was too much for new. Original buyer's depreciaion loss was my gain. I couldn't be more pleased, even if I'd bought it new. My wife loves the looks and power around town with our children. It handles great in snow and ice, is comfortable on long drives, and has performed admirably in light off-road use (fishing, hunting, camping). We had to replace a transmission sensor to fix hard shifting ($150), as well as replace the stereo (covered under the extended warranty). Starting to get a little brake pulsing at 50k miles.

We have used the vehicle for cross country drives, riding in style for a night out, towing a large boat, and off roading in the California desert. It has handled all tasks extremely well. I love the power and acceleration of the V8 engine. The heated leather seats are extremely comfortable. The cockpit layout is great, including audio controls on the steering wheel. However, I have replaced the brake rotors twice, and regular maintenance has cost me more a year than any previous vehicle I've owned. The vehicle also has more road noise on the highway and the fuel economy is pretty average for an SUV.

This Jeep pulls a 23 ft salt water fishing boat to the gulf and east coast twice a year. It has always performed extremely well. Plenty of torgue for towing and very reliable. The GoodYear Wranglers that came on it sucked and even w/rotation wore out at 32000 miles (or so). I'll buy another Jeep when ready. This is Jeep number 5. My first was a 4.0 litre Comanche pickup, then two Cherokee 4X4s and two Grands. You can have your wanna be Japanese SUVs I'll take the one I rely on for power at a reasonable price - Jeep!

I own a 99 JGL with select trac 4wd, 98k miles and have had only 2 issues with it. (1) The water pump went out after a grueling 4x4 expediton. Mud, water forging, steep inclines, and rock hopping. (2) The transfer case had a slight leak. Other than these minor diffculties the Jeep has ran great. It does have the 'clunk' when shifting to reverse, but thats the nature of a good transmission. It also has the hard shift between 2 and 3rd, but I speculate the factory told the computers to shift at a bad time; it only happens when I take some time to get up to speed, not when I floor it when the stop light becomes green.

Plan on heavy expenses for maintenance (nothing was covered under the gold extended jeep warranty). before 45k miles, I replaced the AC system, brakes, battery (twice), various electrical components, power window modules, memory seat module, stereo speakers, stereo controls on steering wheel, etc. Everytime I started the vehicle, the seat would propel me into the dash - jeep couldn't find the problem, not to mention the calls for a tow truck because it wouldn't start - so I got the opportunity to spend lots of time and money in the shop. Lots of road noise with this vehicle. It may look good from the outside, but it's not worth the headaches.

Still lovin' it

I bought my JGC used, and to be honest it wasnt my first choice (i wanted a pathfinder). Very happy i ended up with it though. Its more comfortable, had all the features i wanted, and the 4wd on it will kick anyones butt. Even my dad's landrover! I have driven it through 4 feet of snow with no slipping. 7,000 miles after buying it the front differential broke, but i blame that on carmax for not checking the fluid, not Jeep. Since then my passenger side window stoped working, but my warranty covered that too.

A few minor problems in the beginning. But dealership handled it and haven't had any problems since. Never had a single brake problem like everyone else talks about. As a matter of fact i have only put one set of front brakes on in 88000 miles and no rear brakes yet. Handling is key in this vehicle, i would put it up against any other suv on the market for cornering, and believe me i have driven nearly everything out there in its price range.

Great vehicle, but high maintenance

I special ordered this SUV in 1999. It is so comfortable and wonderful to drive. Fortunately, however, I purchased an extended warranty in 2002. There have been air conditioning problems. The starter went out at 42,000 miles. Occasionally, there is a strange noise from the right rear when cornering. There have been other minor problems. The rear end replacement issue was brought up with my Jeep. The dealer had replaced some others but apparently had done so unnecessarily. Bottom line: yes it is worth the aggravation and yes I would buy it again.

I purchased my Jeep last January. After owning the Jeep for 11 months I am in the process of looking for another Ford. Wheel bearings are gone, howling from either a idler pulley or alternator ($250 for a rebuilt), transmission slipping terribly when it get below 40 degrees F, fogging headlight, leaking tailgate at both the window and gate seal, squeaks and rattles. I have 91K on it now and purchased it with 71K. I have no faith in this vehicle. If you are considering one, get rid of it before 100K. Friend that works for Chrysler said allmost all Jeep Grands need a tranny rebuild then. Wish I had known, my first and last Damlier Chrysler vehicle.

Great value SUV. Brought it used in 03,a local lady had owned it. Perfect condition and paid 2/5 of original cost, with 60k mileage. A bit boxy, stiff ride, some drive train noise comes through in the 1999 edition. Great in the Wyoming winters, outdoors, off-road. Nice highway use, but still an SUV in terms of a highway feel. We put Waag grill/tail light guards on it and it looks tough. Great package for the money!

We, my wife and I, bought the vehicle used. Had 32000 mi. the brakes were checked and described as ok.... after 11000 mi we encountered problems, and the dealer we purchased it from stated it needed a complete brake job. we stated that when we purchased it , the check system stated they were ok? the dealership would not stand behind there own check system, and we purchased the best warrenty program to a tune of $2000 and of course the warrenty program doesn't replace brakes. So I had to pay something like $450 for a brake job... We also had the rear end differential relaced due to noise..warrenty covered this problem..

After having 3 cherokee vehicles this is by far the worst. The power windows failed 3 times, there is a sensor for the transfer case that has failed several times giving you a hard shift change at about 20 miles(and I mean hard!!!). The cd changer skips on most of the disks at between tracks 6 and 8 and the driver rear mirror fails to remember its position frequently thus having to readjust almost daily. This would not be so bad if the dealer had taken care of reparing it but they did not time after time just gave excuses that the vehicle did not failed during their tests.

At under 60,000 miles I've already replaced both the front and rear differentials. Now I'm having transmission problems as outlined in bulletin 21-02-99 (harsh 1-2 shift at speeds of 10-15 mph). Jeep will not stand by their transmissions or assist me in any way. I will never buy a Jeep or Chrysler vehicle again and I strongly recommend you look elsewhere unless you like visiting repair shops.

Have heard the street talk about transmission failures but no problems with mine. Again, I think it matters quite a bit how they're used (towing/offroad/overheating)and maintained.

I am trying to think of something good to say about our Jeep, wait "I have it," it's for sale in the newspaper. Entire front wheel bearing assembly replaced at 60K. Water pump at 65K. Air signed off at 60K. The interior room in this car is a joke for such a heavy car. Quality throughout is a nightmare. Windows quit working. Hood lifts replace every 40K. Used the 4WD one time in snow and developed oil leak in transfer case 1 week later. I could go on but I know you get the message. I purchased my pre-owned 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 55k miles. I read all of the bad reviews before buying. (i.e. Brakes, Transmission, ext.) My dealer threw in a 3 yr - 36K bumper to bumper warrenty. Havn't had to use it as of yet. A lite rattle in the transmission, that does not affect shifting is the only concern. Engine performance is excellant. Gas milage was a concern before buying. I've averaged between 17.5 to 21.5 per tank. About 360 miles per tank. I'm happy with the vehicle so far..

It's been a great car. I bought it new, and since it was the first year of the "new" style, I would think some problems were to be expected... No show stoppers at all, but changed 6 electrical windows in the first 2 years (yes, you read right - 2 of them had to be changed twice), because they stopped working. Breaks disks tend to warp quite frequently, and hence you should expect some at least minor break problems every 18-24 months or so. Also changed 2 computers. No drive train or engine problems at all though. Very reliable engine/drivetrain.

Car is at the dealer for it's 3rd set of warped brake rotors in less than 2 years, at $550 per set (incl labor). Yes, there's a TSB calling for replacement of calipers, pads and rotors, but dealer says Chrysler won't pay for it because the car was purchased used, is out of warranty, and my extended warranty (EasyCare) won't cover them because "they are still working". I have had my Jeep for a few years now. In the beginning it had a couple simple problems that were quickly fixd under warranty. Mechanics of vehicle seem are designed with the do-it- yourselfer in mind. I perform all maintenance myself and my Jeep has never let me down. Routine maintenance is the key. I am presently approaching 70K and it runs as good or better than new. Jeep is perfect if you need one vehicle to get you to the office every day, go camping and bring all your stuff with you. You can also tow your favorite toys with you. I could go on forever, but I will summarize, Best do it all vehicle you can get.

Why doesn't Chrysler fess up and recall this problem? Just found out that the rear differential is shot which is seems to be a common problem with a lot of other reviewers. This vehicle is very sexy but a disappointment in reliability. The maintenance and wear and tear is very expensive. I spent over $5000 in repairs at its 60K regular check up. I'm going back to Honda. The Jeep is very fun to drive and has a great deal of sex appeal considering it is a SUV. My Jeep has the Quadtrac fulltime 4wd system and I would recommend getting this. It is clearly one of the best features of the Jeep. Another personal best feature, is the fact that this jeep has serious whip. From 0-30mph, the car is very fast. My stories about the brakes are not nearly as bad as everyone's else...although I agree the car definitely needs a new braking system, as long as you go somewhat easy on the brakes it won't be that bad. Overall fun and PRACTICAL car.

Grand Cherokee Limited has great curb appeal and interior comforts. The gas economy is okay for full size SUV. Bought (Aug 2002) as a used (off-lease vehicle) with ~35k miles. Transmission began to slip when vehicle was cold at ~40k miles (after end of 3 year/36k drive train warranty). Estimates of $1200-1500 to rebuild transmission. Told that this is a design problem in 1999 Grand Cherokee. Transm seals are rigid when cold and allow fluid to seep by, causing slippage. Called Chrysler about recall and/or some help w/ cost of repairs with no satisfaction. If purchasing a used Grand Cherokee, buy an extended power train warranty. It will be a good investment.

This vehicle has been in the shop more than 30 times in the 3+ years that I have owned it (not one accident). I had a Toyota 4-Runner for more than 10 years that was in the shop only 3 times! I have written Chrysler, but after the first phone call conversation, I guess they felt they had done enough, no further contact. Some of the problem areas: A/C - completely replaced, Brakes, Drive Tran, Electrical - enough? It is too bad that a vehicle that cost more than $35,000 can't make it through a year without going into the shop more than a 1/2 dozen times! I would expect that from oh maybe Isuzu...

Offroad performance is amazing. The JCG can go where only custom 4WDs dare and do so with greater comfort and speed. I can't imagine a better offroad experience. Around town and on the highway the JCG's performance doesn't stand out except for the peppy acceleration from the 4.7L engine, yet it's still comfortable and predictable. Unfortunately, reliability is lousy. I've replaced power window motors 5 times twice out of warranty, 2 side view mirror motors, an engine computer, a fuel pump, transmission leaks, and a radiator! Still, overall I'd buy again: the good points far outweigh the bad if you can afford to deal with the unreliability.

If it isn't one thing it's another. The window is broken, the transmission went out, the leather seats cracked, the vent on the a/c broke effectively blocking all air flow into the vehicle. I love the looks of this car, but I will never buy another one. It just got damaged by hail. I don't think I am even going to repair it. I will just trade it in as is and hopefully have a more reliable car in return - not a Grand Cherokee.

Transmission was extremely clunky: car would buck when switching from first to second; when I stepped on the gas after stopping, it would act like it was in neutral for a few seconds before making a loud clunk and lurching forward; dealer said this was normal!

Never again!

This Jeep has been nothing but a headache. The mechanical problems I have had with it: both front power windows (twice), the fuel gauge, replaced brake pads and rotors, the back seat cup holder had to be replaced, trim strips around the sunroof, driver's door window, and rear liftgate all came loose. The loose trim strip around the liftgate caused the spare tire well to fill with water, rusting the spare wheel. The CD player quit working. The transmission had to be replaced at 23,000 miles due to an ear-splitting whine. The only consolation is that all of this occurred in the first three years/36,000 miles while it was still under warranty.

LOVE MY JEEP!

We bought our Jeep a year ago. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it. Deep charcoal gray with matching leather interior. Running boards. Some kind of extra grill attachment on the front. It just looked fabulous. A year later, it still does. No other SUV touches the curb appeal of the Grand Cherokee (1999 and beyond style). Comfort when riding? Tops. All the bells and whistles in this model. It's a beauty. On the highway, a joy. Plenty of pop in the 4.7L to pass at whatever speed you need. This gorgeous rig turns heads. It performs. Maintenance is higher than I'd anticipated. Overall just love to own and drive it.

I too have had the nightmare of worn brake pads, rotors, etc. about every 5000 miles. I found out right away the dealership is not motivated to fix anything, just replace everything. After numerous attempts to resolve the problem, I took the car to a neighborhood mechanic who simply found the problem. The calipers are not designed well and the caliper pins stick which causes the pads and rotors to wear/warp. When I took the car to him the pads were shot from the previous attempt to fix the problem. This mechanic replaced the pads under the lifetime warranty provision and then cleaned the calipers and greased the pins. I have not had a problem since.

I purchased this vehicle used about a year ago. At 36K, there was a terrible transmission clunk when shifting. At 40K, rotors had to be replaced due to poor DiamlerChrysler caliper design (well known problem). DC refused to assist in the $450 bill. I phoned the 800 number and they refused to let me talk to a manager and then hung up on me! Their customer service is horrible and rude. DC capitalizes on the Jeep "American" tradition (but it's a German automobile). Don't make the same mistake I did. You will be sorry.

Just had the rotors done again(3x in 3 yrs) brakes, and axle(s) rear and front. This is a big problem for jeep and they don't admit to it. I just spent so much money trying to fix the axle and it still didn't sound right so i junked it and bought a highlander. It was too scary to drive after that. Just didn't feel safe and didn't want to put more money into fixing it. Only 56253 miles on it!! I want a car to last at least 100k. It's too bad, though, because i liked the ruggedness of the jeep but not the quality.

I've had nothing but trouble with rotors, and axle repairs. Jeep refuses to fix these problems and see them as defects. I have had rotors replace 2x and rear and front axle work!! It was a lemon from the get go and they didn't do anything. The first 2 rotor(both done at less than 12,000 miles!) repairs were covered under warranty along with the rear differential work. More recently i had new rotors(again!) and a front axle job!! Please save your money and buy something other than a gr cherokee!! Save yourself the time, money and stress!!

Although it looks nice and rides nice, and the engine has been basically dependable, I've had so many "minor" things go wrong with this vehicle that I would NEVER buy another one. Currently less than 41,000 miles. Stereo speakers blew, O-rings replaced, front rotors turned twice and rear rotors turned once (at less than 36,000 miles), leaking windows, misc. electrical failures, three recalls, tailight assemblies replaced, front driver seat assembly replaced ... the list goes on and on.

I purchased my jeep in Sept. 99 the pwr window modulator had to be replaced twice, it was still under warranty. The fuel pump regulator went out and cost $150 the front brakes were replaced last year & this year the front & rear rotors needed replacing costing $450 & I still have squeaking. The passenger side air vents does not blow as much air as the driver side & I was told the air modulator would need replacing to correct this problem. There's water in my headlight kit & a rubbing noise in the steering wheel when turning. I was very disappointed with the costly repairs & resale value. I bought a Trailblazer & I'm loving it.

My experience with this car has been excellent, although now that I have over 70,000 miles, there have been a few minor annoyances. The driver window switch stopped working and had to be replaced. Replacing the headlight bulb is a hassle. The gas milage has been disapointing- about 14.5 mpg. The engine is great- lots of power and acceleration. Other than the few minor items above, it has been a great car. The ride is a little harsh. The exterior styling looks great.

This is my third top-of-the-line Jeep, and owning it has been my first bad experience with Jeep. I have spent about $1500 per year on non-warranty service. I'll highlight some of my favorite repairs. $300 - Front calipers rotors. $900 Rear bearings. $150 fuel pump regulator something or another. Anyone know why the steering wheel moans when you turn it? Is there supposed to be water inside the headlight assembly? Ok, why won't the cruise control engage? I love the fact that the HVAC control doesn't work anymore. Its stuck in the defrost mode! Looks like I'm going to buy a 4runner. Oh, the gas shocks that hold the hood up...they don't like the cold, so make sure conditions are ideal the next time you need to check under the hood, or else you will find yourself literally "under the hood".

This had to be my worst car buying experience ever! Bought brand new and had nothing but trouble from the day I drove it off the lot. In and out of the shop. And don't believe their warranty lies either... read the fine print! The hood was not aligned correctly to begin with. After a couple thousand miles the brakes needed replacing and had to be replaced every 2 to 3 thousand miles. Transmission was a mess too. Resale value was the worst ever. Finally dumped this piece of junk. Don't ever buy a jeep... you'll REGRET IT!!!!!

So I'm not the only one who has had an unexpected rotor warping or two. I love the power of the V8, but don't love the fact that I'm stopping for gas every 250-275 miles. The whine from the quadra-drive is very noticeable above 65mph. At 32k, the drive shaft to the front wheels had to be replaced since it clunked every time I would take off from a stop. The front window pillars are so thick that it makes it difficult to see other cars at 4-way stops. I'm short, but there isn't even enough leg room in the rear seats for me. All that aside, the heated front seats, decent ride for an suv, 4wd system overall, sunroof, and stereo all exceed my expectations.

Bought at 36K. Immediately after the dealer's 60 day warranty expired the transmission stripped completely and had to be replaced. The check engine light comes on about once a week - it's always something, though usually minor. Heated seats circuit blew B4 I even bought it. This car has THE MOST comfortable seats I've ever had, and is the only car that doesn't bother my bad back. Interior fit and finish is nice, too. Good firm ride though trucklike motor noise comes straight into driving compartment, becomes grating on long trips. BIG problem is that car will not start on even a slight grade if the gas tank falls below one-quarter!!

I heard alot of negitive things about the Jeep. After buying one, I love the feel of the ride, the handling of it's 4 wheel select-trac system. I thas been an over all joy to own and drive. I have heard from other people, that some SUV's have different drive systems (automatic shifting). As far as I am concerned, if you cant control when it will shift, you cant control the vehicle. That is what makes this jeep lover happy.

I have had quite a few jeeps before but this was my first grand cherokee. Like some others I have had brake issues. But I would not consider it a problem. The V8 engine is really nice and the 4x4 system is awsome. It performs better in the snow than my girlfriends '03 Lexus RX300. Besides looks thats about the only way the jeep beats out the lexus but for an american full size SUV you cant beat it. The seats are the most comfortable I have ridden in period. Take a test drive and see for yourself.

I hail from the Detroit area and we’ve always purchased cars from American manufacturers. In 1999, we purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The reliability has been lousy at best. It has been in the shop for one thing or another 3-4 times a year since we've owned it. The “rap sheet” is longer than my arm! The repairs did not cease after the warranty expired (due to time lapse). At 38K, the PCM module died, stranding my wife. At 41K, I found a transmission leak on my garage floor. At 43K, the Quadring Seal (?) was replaced. Got nowhere with Chrysler. Need I say more? Reliability is the name of the game. Acura MDX here I come!

Car now has almost 60,000 miles. No problems except toe-in/out requires monitoring and adjustments every 20,000 miles or so.Gas mileage on a 1000 mile trip decent, 22 mpg. city driving 17 mpg. Color being stone white doesn't show road dirt, easy to clean. Very comfortable seats.Visabilty very good.

We have had very few problems. Did do the brakes twice but other then that Jeep has been a great vehichle. My wife uses it for around town and with kids. Change oil & general maintenance every 3000 miles. I think this is important and explains lack of problems. I would buy another one.

Love this car, Get the warranty.

I drive about 60 miles a day on L.A. freeways, and do alot of 4 wheeling on the weekends, and have not been disapointed or let down yet. However, know that this car has some faults that will probably need to be fixed. When the front rotors warp (which will be soon) spend the extra $50 on aftermarket crossed-drilled rotors, and some good pads. They will save you money in the end. Change your fluids like you should (engine oil, X-Case, Tranny, and Diffs) and those shouldn't give you any problems. The extended warranty is fairly inexpensive piece of mind. I can't wait to see what it can do with some decent tires.

The Jeep turned out to be very high maintenance. My first brake job was at 7500 miles, next at 11,750, next at 24,500 and on and on. The brake job at 51,500 cost over $500. The transmission was replaced at 11,750. At 61,600 I had to replace the transfer case output and input seals. Also another brake job at that time. Now at 66,000 miles the transfer case shifter shaft seal is leaking and to fix will cost $450. Also the rear differential bearings are making noise and must be replaced ($950) and if you let it go too long you will damage the rear axles ($$$). It is beginning to feel like the brakes need work again.

After 10k miles started having front brake pulsations. Took to dealer for repair. They turned the rotors. After 5k miles same problem. DIDO. Mechanic said that rotor was at tolerence limit and could not be turned again. I asked to replace the rotors. Chrysler would not authorize that. On 5/13/02 Chrysler service bulletin #0500302 says that for this problem, replace rotors, calipers and pads on all 1999-2002 GCs. It took Chrysler 3 years to admit they had bad parts and would not replace them. I called Chrysler to have the repair done. They said--sorry Charlie, that is a ware part and nothing can be done. THEY NEVER FIXED IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!

I'm embarrassed to drive my jeep. It's parked in my garage. The brakes squeek so loud you could hear me a mile away. I've had the brakes fixed over 4 times and still the same problem. I can't get rid of it because I owe more than what it's worth... It was a mistake to have purchased this car! I thought I had a lemon, but after reading everyones review I see that the 99 Grand Cherokee is a lemon in itself...

I will never buy a Daimler-Chrysler product!!!!!! Since we bought this Jeep we have had numerous problems with the power windows until they were fixed by the dealer and finally stopped working for good. I spoke with a number of people who have had the same problems with the window plus more. If you want to buy a dependable car or suv look elsewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't buy these products from JEEP!!!

Cons: It's quite painfully clear that Jeep has under-engineered their drive train and braking system. The vehicle simple looks and is marketed as being tough but can't walk the walk. The truck is built "Good Enough" to make it through a lease period which seems to be the mantra of the American Auto companies. My next vehicle, which will be shortly, will be a Japanese vehicle. The brand Jeep conjures up images of a tough American icon built to last with second to none off road capabilities, which is a farce.

What I expect after owning a 93 Gran Cherokee Laredo. It's still the best styled of all the SUV's out there. No real complaints about the interior. The ride is a huge improvement over the 1993. AC Compressor froze with about 16,000 miles on the car, dealer replaced under warrenty with no problem. 4.0 litre 6.

Have had very few problems in the past 1000 miles of ownership. Better than an RX300 by far. They have a "ghost bump" in the driveshaft in this year but that has been rectified through a Tech Bulletin I will have done as well as many of the other complaints here. Do your homework and your problems will be fixed. Mine a 10/98 build and beside the ghost bump and a leaky rear hatch window I have NO problems. Dealer himself replaced a bad window regulator also. Just like everything else theres good ones and bad ones.

Had this Jeep since new, now with 28,000mi. Front rotors replaced at 7,000mi and again at 25,000mi. Called Chrysler and they refunded me my money for the 2nd brake job. Turns out they WILL REPLACE THE CALIPERS ON ALL CARS WITH THIS ROTOR ISSUE! Call them and they will authorize for your car to have new calipers, pads and rotors installed FREE! Just hold onto the receipt you have from the brake job.

This has really been an excellent car, except for the recent transmission problems Im having now. This SUV drives smoother, has better interior, and more power than even some of the V8's in its class (Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc). But the transmissions are notorious for going bad soon after 50K (Im one of the unlucky ones). It slips when shifting between 2nd gear and drive...it either hesitates between gears, or wont shift out of 2nd until the rpm's are way high. The new tranny is costing me $3000. If you notice any weird sounds or shifting behavior...dont delay...take it in asap.

This was my wife's dream truck until we bought it. We have only had it one year, but in that time, we've replaced brakes & rotors twice, replaced the wheel hub assemblies, Had three dealer recalls, the heated seats nor the power mirrors work, the doors lock & unlock while you're driving down the road and now the truck stop sputters when you take off. My wife and I have almost been in three accidents as a result. The truck also lost $5000 dollars in value in one year. This was a BAD INVESTMENT!!!!

I am telling myself NEVER, NEVER again buy a Jeep vehicle. Over $4,000 in repair costs in just over 2 years. Leaks in hoses, blown water pumps, power windows completely failed & had to replace, many electrical & mechanical malfunctions & defects, defective sensors, major transmission & engine problems....etc. Don't forget to consider the extremely poor resale values due to Jeep's reputation for poor quality & reliability. I've concluded it would have been more inexpensive to have bought a BMW or Mercedes sports car than the Jeep...at least those have high resale values.

The Jeep left me stranded three times in three years. Electrical problems abound. The transmission was clunky and skipped, and the dealer couldn't repair it. The sunroof often failed to close or open; getting stuck in whichever position it was in. The air conditioning system was unable to cool the vehicle in Atlanta Summer weather. Customer Service is virtually non- existent. Don't recommend Jeep.

I have the original tires on that need to be replaced. Gas milage is ok for a SUV 20 on the hwy and 14 in the city. I would buy another one

I encountered several electrical problems with my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The driver's/passenger's windows got stuck several times and I had to visit the dealership on numerous occasions to have this problem corrected. Also had a problem with the front brakes (disk) getting bent even though the car had less than 20,000 miles and was driven carefully. The AC (evaporator) also went bad and had to be replaced . A lot of my friends have had similar experiences with their Grand Cherokee's as well. Car also had several recalls (three) during the last three years, and due to the above mentioned problems I will not purchase/lease a Grand Cherokee again..

I too have had trips to the dealership to repair/replace brakes (twice), transfer case lead twice and still leaking, rear shocks, front stabilizer bar(twice). Now scheduled to take it in for a 3rd time for brakes and only has 30,400 miles on the vehicle. Since it is out of the 3yr. warranty, the kind man on the other end of the toll free Chyrsler phone said they would replace brakes, rotors, and calipers for $50 cost to me. I feel they pretty much destroyed the Jeep name. Wished I would have leased instead of purchasing it in 99. Never Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But,,,, The brakes were replaced at 20k the tranfer case is leaking and the back windoe leaks water. Asside from this it is a great car. I had a 1988 Cherokee Pioneer and loved that car. However, I have been disappointed in this Jeep. The power windows have each had to be repaired at least twice. The weatherstripping keeps falling off and although I have had it in twice for the rear window weatherstripping, it still leaks. I've also had to take it in for at least four recalls in the last three years. It also has blind spots due to the thick window supports -- I've nearly gotten into two accidents because I haven't seen cars coming toward me on a curve. Would I buy another Jeep? Not on your life.

I bought a 99 Laredo 4WD. Since I've had it, I have taken it for a warrenty fix 24 times. Uncalled for. The starter (4X), passenger window (3X), rear wiper motor (2X), rear Differential, electrical shorts..blah blah blah. Let me tell you, in between fixes, I love the Jeep dearly. If my friends were risk takers, I would say buy it and pray for a good one. Otherwise , stay away, far away and wait for an Audi- type turnaround for Chrysler.

Since I bought it, I have kept getting back to dealer for repairing, radio noise, gas tank leak, window noise, power window not working, power seat not moving, door can not be unlocked, engine check light on, so on........If any one wants a reliable car, never look at the Jeep!!!! Take the lesson from me! But you like the fancy functions and don't care to visit Jeep car dealer for fixing "small problems" once a month, go ahead for it.

I take emaculate care of my vehicles. Regular oil changes, service inspections, etc. The vehicle is used on-road between work and home. Here are the problems 1 Window Motors 2. Fuel Pump 3. Air Conditioner 4. Transmission Slipage 5. Radiator Problems 6. Numerous Recalls It's nice they fixed most under warranty, but who wants to deal with issue after issue? The pain of dropping it off and picking it up. I just traded my Jeep (40000miles) for a Toyota Sequoia and don't regret the decision at all. Bottom line, purchasing this vehicle is a risk. The gas mileage (V-8) with the exception of highway cruise (about 20 mpg) is horrid, about 13.5 mpg. The front brakes suck, have been replaced 3 times in the first 27k miles. The rest of the vehicle has faired only a bit better. Stalling, transfer case binding, drivers seat loose (was told that is normal) are current issues at 31K miles. Love to drive it, it tows a trailer very well even in high crosswinds, and it is very capable off- road. My lease ends soon, glad I don't own it.

When we purchased the vehicle, we expected the reliability that is sort of associated with Jeeps. What we got instead is the garbage associated with Chrysler. In 51000 miles, we have gone through 4 sets of rotors, three sets of brake pads, 2 seat heaters, a rear differential rebuild, and a whole laundry list of minor items that have broken (power mirrors, power seats, covers on seat belts, etc..) The dealer knows about the brake problems, Chrysler will not admit there is a problem. I am glad we did not purchase the Quadra-Drive which had even more problems in this year also. Basically I cannot in good conscience recommend this vehicle to anybody.

I bought this Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo used when it was 6 months old with 17,000 miles. Other than replacement of a leaky right headlight assembly, and upgrade of front brake pads and rotors, this vehicle has been very good and completely reliable. It has negotiated very steep inclines in excess of 45 degrees; it is comfortable on and off road; it pulls a 4500 lb. trailer with no problems. I would trust this vehicle to go anywhere. The gas mileage is 18 mpg/city. As a suggestion, purchase an extended warranty from warranty direct (7-year, 100,000 mile plan for $1,350), just in case I trashed the transfer case. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Since I posted the last time Water pump had to be replaced, brakes had to be replaced, transmission jerks under partial acceleration. I would walk before I lease another JEEP. I know the service writer by first name. Hope chrysler isn't making tanks for the troops,or will be in deep do do

When i bought the jeep, i was pretty stupid and fell in love with the looks. one of the dumbest things i have done. I have taken the jeep in over 15 times and still i have problems. the quality is so bad that you must have alot of money in the bank just to fix the repairs. such as the ball joints, transmistion, speakers and breaks. I will never buy an american made car again. look at somthing else!

had to replace rotors 3x dealer didn't want to pay any as I was at 12,500 mi. first time and said only covered up to 12K. Spent about 1300$ of my own money to fix brakes and only last about 3 months then need to recut and replace pads or rotors.

Very poor fuel economy, even though used 89 octane rating. Had to refill every 3-4 days. Paid more than $20 every time. Unless you live in a suburban area or farm land where you need a 4WD, wouldn't recommend it. Consumer Reports picked Lexus RX300 as the best choice in midsized sport- utility vehicles. It has the highest overall mpg fuel economy rating in it's class.

I bought this car when it was redesigned. I should have known not to buy a chrysler product. Repair costs have totaled over $3,000 in less then 2.5 years. The rotor and brake pads have been replaced and resurface a total of 6 times and the Front and Rear Ball bearings replaced recently for a loud whining sound. Sick of taking it. Worst Quality. No Customer service.

My husband and I have enjoyed this Jeep, but we're glad the lease is up. We tried to sell this vehicle and got *no* hits (probably because it was devalued by the dealerships with all the 0% APR). No real probs, but it did stall in the middle of a hip-high river once, while an old chevy and even a Suzuki Samuri made it through no prob. We had to be towed over 12 miles. Through the desert. Pushing down on the gas to pass, a half-second wait for power??

I have had absolutely no problems with this Jeep. This truck is as sound now as when it was when I bought it new. When the style changes I will buy a new one.

If you need a car to get you to work this is NOT your vehicle!! My Jeep has been in the garage 20 times in the last twenty two months for various problems. At 16,000 miles the engine blew, the alternator has gone, I have had four stereo speakers replaced, and the brakes need to be fixed every 5,000 miles. This is without a doubt the worst car I have ever owned. Admittedly it is comfortable inside but I only have the car three weeks out of every month. To compound matters when it does break down the dealer feels it it fair to give me a subcompact as a replacement. If you are considering this vehicel I implore you to do your research!!!

This is the second jeep I have leased over the lasy 5 years, would I lease another? No On both my 97 and 99 I have had to replace tires with less then 25000 miles on them. Both have had problems electrically and transmission problems. Both had batteries replaced after two years under warranty. 99 had fuel pump problems,a/c does not get cold enought in the FL sun.

Overall the vehicle is wonderful to drive. It has great pickup and power. The inifinity sound system is wonderful. The ride is great. However, there are several mechanical problems on my vehicle. Jeep service is not the greatest and it takes numerous trips to get things fixed. I've been to several different dealers, some better than others.

I bought this vehicle used from dealership with 42000 mi, I noticed what appeared to me the tires singing very noisey. The salesman told me it was the tires. I put new tires on, still the noise was there. ICalled the dealership to find out the warranty was gone with the first owner. I took it to my mechanic, to find out the carrier and axle bearings were completely shot! One bearing was even warped. We were riding on a PRAYER with it being a 99 JGC & only 42000 miles with this kind of problem.Chrysler needs to be more responsible for its products they produce at such a high price.

Bought car used in Oct 2001 at 45000 mis. SInce that time, have had left rear wheel spindle and rotor replaced, rear diff pinion gears replaced, trans valve body replaced, and is in shop now with leak in transfer case, trans band adj, and more brake rotor problems. All this within 5000 miles of driving. I love the style, but can't wait to unload it. Dealer has been great in working with me, but I need a reliable vehicle. Highly recommend ext warranty if you are considering purchase.

I love my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I live in WI so the 4WD is put to use when needed. I love my jeep its fun to drive and it fits all of my friends. i do wish i would have bought a jeep with a sunroof and the leather heated seats. but in a year or to i plan to buy a newer jeep and at that point i will get all the options. this is a great buy and i plan to have one for the rest of my life. great SUV not to big and definitely not to small.

I have had my Jeep grand cherokee 4wd in the shop 2 times for excessive noise in the rear end. "rough bearings" so i am told. 25k miles and 65K miles.

I hate this vehicle. So far I have had the transmission, transfer case and front axle and oil pressure gauge replaced, the computer system overhauled, and countless other small problems and the truck still does not work right. The dealership says they can never find the source of the problems (clunking, grinding, hard shifts, steering noise, and horrible performance). LOOK AT THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE. Do not buy a 1999 or 2000, especially with Quadra-drive.

The power train is great. Everything else stinks. The first week I had it, I had it in the shop 4 times. Service is poor and in the 3 years I have had it, I have had it in the shop 30 times. Anything from the brakes (twice) to the sunroof. Do not buy. The problems were fixed in 2000, but I would not take that chance again.

Everything that can go wrong went wrong with this vehicle. From transmission, brake to window, doors, seats, etc.,everything seemed to fall apart. On average, it lasts less than 900 miles per dealer service day. Just repaced all rotors less than 30,000 miles, after two re-surfacing.
