I bought this truck brand new in 1999 I pulled a 30 foot travel trailer from Louisville Kentucky to California several times averaging 16 - 18 miles per gallon empty average 22 - 24 miles/gallon I had to replace the starter alternator minor repairs best truck I ever owned 7.3 is great motor

Pros: Super reliable: 220k on mine and all it's needed is 2 alternators and a set a glow plugs. Super powerful: Hits 90mph easily but has a Governor at 92. Neutral: Gas mileage: Horrible when going slow or stop and go. Got 5mpg in some areas before. BUT, I get 18-20 on the Hwy and Freeways and ~15 when pulling a large trailer which is amazing considering how big and powerful the vehicle is. Cons: Lots of little stuff. Bad stereo, AC works but needs Freon and doesn't have recirculating air, power locks broke, electric seat adjuster barely works, tires are too small for the engine so flats and tire ware can be an issue, bad traction when not in 4x4 but it's only an issue during snow or when off roading. Summary: Everything that matters works amazingly and is super reliable but it does have many small problems.

grat truck. love it!!!

my truck has 129,000 and no problems till now blew a spark plug out of the head . not to exspensive $213.00 for a spark plug and a coil and a sleeve simular to a helix coil, but no drilling involed just insert and spread took less than 2 hours truck is a beast. ford screwed us on the gas but 18 on the freeway is'nt bad the harley makes up for the winter gas i spend !!! Parking sucks in a crowded place !

Beware of Ford Diesel 7.3, bad fuel economy, hard to start, bad electronic, bad transmission, mechanics' nightmare. Turning radius is very bad.

I bought mine to tow my travel trailer. I recently changed the rear end to 430 limited slip and love the change for towing. At 96K I needed to repair the exhaust manifold bolts which was a major pain. Wheel bearings also don't last very long. Overall I love the truck. Mine is a 2WD version with the V10. It is a towing beast!

My Super Duty reached it's 10th B day in May. Its easy to rate a vehicle when its a year or two old with a few miles on it. My truck just passed 270k and it still looks better than any other 3 or 4 year old truck. It has pulled loads to 30k over trips of 6000 miles in mountains. Mileage never less than 16 - 20 empty and never added a qt of oil between changes of 5000 miles. This with the truck living mostly in Minnesota's salt and snow. This truck has never let me down even in the 9 winters with sub zero temps. To date the only items replaced were the normal consumables like brakes, wheel bearings, etc. Teh engine still runs like new teh tranny is solid and the body shows no rust.

I can't believe its a FORD!!!!!

i bought this truck a month ago. The original owner purchased it new in 1999. It have 144,000 miles and runs perfect. Fuel economy it great i have a 2006 honda ridgeline and the 7.3 powerstroke gets better fuel mileage. Mixed city and highway i get 18-20.

Ford knows how to make a pulling truck although they give up decent fuel economy in the process. My V10 gets about 11 mpg with the 4.30 gears. The truck is very reliable but it does use a quart of oil between changes. The transmission is bullet proof with regular fluid changes. Previous comments were correct, you can't go anywhere other than on pavement without 4x4 due to the weight.

Bought my F250 new have 150K on it and not a problem one with the 7.3L diesel. Pull a 34' 5th wheel with it and it does not skip a beat.. Fuel economy is good for a truck of this size..16-17 city --21-23 hyway.. pulling I get between 12 and 14 MPG. Better than my gas truck use to get.

We bought the truck with 150,000 miles on it. We have since then put another 10,000 miles on it and it still runs like a champ. 4x4 works amazing! We love it! The only thing is that you need to change your spark plugs at about every 50k to ensure that they won't blow out of the head. That's expensive. Computer console has a short and does not work. All in all love the truck and will not trade for a long long time.

I purchased my 1999 in 2005 for about $15,000 with about 45,000 miles on it, and it had a 5th wheel hitch and normal receiver hitch already on it. Mine is the Lariat with 4WD, and full 8' bed, with the V-10 gasoline. Primary use was to ocasionaly pull a boat with the normal hitch or horse trailer with the 5th wheel. Does a very good job pulling either one! Gas mileage is poor, but with the big V-10 you should expect that. I only get about 10-11 mpg highway when not pulling, and with a heavy horse trailer loaded it drops down to the 8 mpg range on highway. It seats 5 with no issues and is comfortable. You do have to "climb up" into it - and ride is stiff when not loaded or pulling.

This is my son's truck and I love to drive it. Its awesome, 6 speed manual transmission, 4-Wheel drive, its one Tough truck. It gets around 18 mpg. And its used for work, he is always pulling something with it. He puts that truck through a test daily. Even my brother who is a mechanic loves the truck, he said that truck has some pulling power. This truck has even pulled a Dodge backwards that had a Cummins in it.

This is one GREAT truck - sharp looking and tons of power. That V10 just screams - NO problems hauling a loaded stock trailer up hills doing 60. Mileage is better than expected at ~16 mpg. Interior is nicer than my living room - and cleaner! Built solid and drives solid.

I have had a very good experiance with my Ford F-350 Superduty 7.3 liter diesel. It has a full box and 4 doors making it very long, but for hauling 5th wheel trailers it works flawlessly. Empty I get 18 mpg; with a 15,000 lb. trailer 10 mpg; with a 30,000 lb. trailer 5-7 mpg (yes we have pulled 30k lb. trailer several times, once even a truck plus trailer weight of about 39,000 lb.). One problem with its own weight being almost 8,000 lb. empty, if you ever leave solid road surfaces you will need 4WD. All around though I would say it is an amazing truck that redefined the pick-up-truck.

It's been the best truck we have ever own of all of them (dodge, chevy, ford) we bought it to pull a 34' 5th wheel trailer (did great). only dislike is it's too front heavy with the diesel to drive on the beach. so we're down sizing to a smaller truck

Great truck, the only complaint is 10mpg. I knew what I was getting into when I bought the nice and quiet V10, and added front and rear replacement bumpers, toolbox and 35" BFG mud tires. Pulls trailers "ok", not to good on hills. But overall is a great and reliable truck.

Very capable truck for hauling and towing. Ride is rough due to leaf spring suspension and steering feel is numb. If you don't need 3/4-1 ton capacity, you will be happier with the ride, performance and comfort of an 150. Overall gas mileage has been excellent for a truck this size with a range of 11-14 mpg. I recommend not getting the 4.3 gears unless you tow heavy. 3.73s are a better all around choice. (I've got the 4.3s.) I'd steer clear of the manual trans as they are noisey and slow shifting. (Yes, I've got one.)

For a BIG truck... can't beat it!

It pulls, climbs and gets you there safely. Other trucks try, this one does. The diesel engine is just being broke in at 100,000 miles. Very low maintanance if you service it regularly.

This thing with the 7.3 PowerStroke is a monster! It has the manual 6 speed trans, and can climb steep grades pulling a 6500lb camper...at 65MPH in 4th...passing other vehicles! The crew cab carries 5 comfortable, 6 in a crunch (manual trans, remember?). Without a load, it gets 16-17 MPG city, and 18-19 on the road at 65-70 MPH.

I just traded it in with 52350 miles. It had the Powerstroke, auto. The ONLY thing that ever went wrong was an alternator failure right at 50,000 miles. It turns out that the alternator bearings were out of spec from the beginning and it was wearing out from day 1. $160 later, I had it running. Other than that, it was powerful, economical to drive, and very reliable. I liked it well enough that I bought a 2003 just about like it!

I bought this truck with 35,000 miles on it and I have never had a any trouble with it whatsoever. This truck is very stable on the highway. I use this truck both as an off road and highway vehicle. I have a farm which makes it necessary to get this truck in a soft muddy barn yard as well as the fields using 4WD. I also have pulled heavy fertilizer spreaders up steep grades with this truck on the highway. The Triton engine performed far better than I expected. The fuel compsupmtion is a little high at about 12 to 15 mpg, but, with this big engine that's to be expected. I would buy this truck again in a heartbeat!

Just bought 3 days ago and have added 100 miles to the odometer (almost to 40K now). Has 5.4 with a manual trans. Trans has problem with second gear that seems to be a ford trait (had same problems in a 76 and 79). Double clutching gets rid of the grind problem. Wife enjoys the ride and drive.

This is the last truck I will ever own, because I will never need another one. In fact, I'll likely pass it and the RV it pulls down to my children.I am absolutely pleased with its performance, reliability and capability. Although initial cost is pretty high for the diesel, operating costs are not that great, and the added versatility and towing capacity make up for it. This truck does everything I need it to do.

I bought used at 106K miles but truck was very clean. Now have 118K and no problems so far. Very nice to drive but be careful when you sip your coffee! Very solid ride but seats are excellent for comfort. Used as a daily commuter and feel safe in traffic. The transmission bangs into each gear with nice positive feel. The 5.4 engine has a rap when starting cold and startled me first few times but was told by other owners theirs make same noise. Whatever it is, the performance is not affected and it does disappear within minutes. Overall, I love the truck and would recommend without question.

I bought my 5.4 with 98k miles and have close to 117K after 8 months. Used as a daily driver and love the firm ride and safety. No problems so far and seems very solid. The 14mpg is a little rough but worth the tradeoff. Pulls an 18 ft loaded car trailer with ease. I have the xtended cab/longbed so can be a mother in the turning radius dept. Went thru a Taco Bell drive thru and had to drive over the curb and into the flowers when leaving.

Stiff twin I beam front suspension on the 2x4 corners best. 12~13 MPG commuting, to 8 MPG ave with 11,000+ pound slide-in camper rig. Added FORD & aftermarket anti-sway bars, air springs & 110 PSI Goodyear steel carcas tires on the single rear wheels to kill over-steer.
