This car was great we got it in about 2002. The car just died on us in 2016 due to a transmission problem. We were able to put about 286,000 miles on this car. This is amazing for an American made car. It had its issues due to it getting old but it worked perfectly for about 10-12 years.

Now it's time to move on

This has been a great suv for us, I drove over a long distance and also pulled in the same. Over the time that I've had it I spent very little on repair.

Got my 99 explorer in febuary of 2013 with only 97**** miles and now towards the end of 2015 with 104*** still running strong with the 5.0 engine. Plenty of room for my wife and 2 kids and you wouldnt believe how much stuff we hauled with this, better then a pickup. Truck has been very reliable with the only maintenence done to it has been buying a new set of tires when got it,got rear and front brakes replaced and one time car did not start thought it was the starter had it checked out wasn't the problem, turned out to be the pulley that wasn't allowing it to crank replaced and nothing since. Got a MagnaFlow exhaust which makes it sound beasty,I leave Hondas in the dust! See other reviews of them pushing to 200*** plus miles and taking care of this bad boy hoping to keep em around to get him there.

So I bought this truck after my Acura Integra was stolen. I decided I wanted to be higher up off the ground so I bought the 99 explorer. I absolutely loved the truck but I am 4 foot 10 so it was hurting my back. I decided to sell it for a smaller car. I sold the car to my fiance's old boss. Three weeks later my smaller car was totaled. His ex boss kept the title and truck in the parking lot and it was never touched. After 3 months we offered to pay him back for it and he did. The truck was not started in 3 months (and it is very cold here) and she started right up!! She always started right up and never gave me an issue. I knew I could never part with this truck!

I owe a 1999 Ford Explorer. I love my truck. I live where it snows a lot and it rolls over all of it with no issues. I has enough room for my family and our pets. I can easily say this is the best thing I have owned. Bought with a newer motor (under 20,000 miles on it) and it says it over 224,000 miles on the truck it's self. The engine runs smooth. Starts every time. Has some cosmetic rust. But I figure that's normal. Replaced normal wear and tear items. I bought a new radio by choice. With all the bad I find the good and would buy a Ford again.

A Beast!

My daily driver and has NEVER let me down because of conditions. Currently the vehicle has 335k miles and has had 1 tranny replacement at 180k miles by AAMCO it has had ball joints replaced with the kind that have grease fittings. It has had all shocks, bearings replaced an repacked and she keeps MICHELIN LTX-M/S on the vehicle and we change the oil every 5k miles and the tranny fluid every 75 ki miles. We change antifreeze every 3 years and hoses 3vry 6 years. Serpentine belt every 75k miles. rotate tires every 3rd oil change. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE is the key to getting these vehicles to last a long time.

Bought with less than 50K miles, overall good vehicle display went out for radio/cd about 100K miles. had to rewire some due to electrical issues. its a beast in the snow. Motor is still great, plenty of power, doesn't burn any oil at 175k miles. will replace ball joints, transmission is still going strong being original hoping to get another 25k miles out of it using it for work commute only. i could take it on a road trip, but thats why i have another ford.

Funny, I feel like several of these posters are driving my Explorer. I'm at 175k miles. Radio display went out at about 50k miles. Rear wiper works maybe one month out of the year. Tranny still good but starting to show its age. Occasionally it won't start. I believe its a short in the fuel pump sensor. If I wait about 3-5 minutes, for some reason she'll start right up. Driver door handle broke and entire locking and handle configuration had to be redone. All in all, I've never put much money in this thing. It handles snow with absolute ease. Gas mileage averages 18.4 city and highway. For some reason, some car critics slam the explorer, but mine has been a darn good car overall.

Ok car in theory, but not built very well. Console cover broke off after a few days, power windows almost have stopped working and take a long time to put up. Transmission shot at 75,000 miles. Multiple blown head gaskets, ABS problems, AC compressor almost killed engine when accidentally switched on for a minute. The list goes on and on.

Great truck, but the gas around the city is crazy. I was spending 80 bucks a week just for daily commute. Bought the truck with a brand new transmission, and everything worked great. Hated to sell the thing but I cant live with paying that much..

AWESOME! miss it greatly.

Very comfortable, most reliable vehicle my family has ever owned. Around 20 mpg which is good. I rolled it on a gravel and completly destroyed it. Me and 4 friends walked out of the ditch with just bruises and a couple cuts. INCREDIBLE build quality. Definatly one of Ford's best vehicles. Would buy another in a heartbeat.

Bought it in May with 120,000 miles on it. Drives great. Love the truck. Had three small problems with it and one huge one. The rear wiper has stopped working, the drivers door handle broke off, and the drivers lock keeps getting stuck. The huge problem was at 130,000 miles the transmission started to go. Wouldnt shift into 3rd gear smoothly anymore. Currently replacing the Transmission as I type this. Even with these problems i love the truck. does everything i ask it to do.

Bought from old friend with only 88k last Sept and have logged almost 20k in ensuing months. Worst snow in NW Oregon in years and it soldiered through it, 34 miles each way, to work and back. Jeeps and other SUV's were in the ditch and on their sides, me and my Explorer just drove on as though we were inpervious. I'm a big guy, 6'4 215, and I fit perfectly in the car. The leather seats are comfortable enough althought the driver's is starting to sag. All the electrical is fine except the rear wiper which was a problem during the bad weather and the driver's door lock is frozen, but the auto lock still works fine. Paint and overall appearance is very nice still. Grey/ grey leather. Love it!

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLS with 184000 miles on it and I put that baby to the test every day. Things like going muddin and have never got stuck. I also go through snowbanks that the Chevy Blazer Never Dreamed of! The only major thing that has happend to my Explorer was the Tranny. I had to Flush it and replace the Filter in it. Not to hard of work. I think this is the best SUV for your money. I took my Explorer to Kansas this Spring and I live 6 hours from where I was going and I got 21 Miles to the Gallon in my Explorer. This is the best SUV I have ever Had!

Bough the truck new 10 years ago. I have 77,000 miles on it and the only major repairs that I have done was a transmission (after only 35,000 miles) and recently the tie rod and stabilizer cracked. Good SUV, bad fuel economy. Now the little things are going, cruise control, rear wiper, rear defogger, gasket around rear window, keyless entry

I have been on light but rocky 4wd roads in Colorado, cruised the interstates 12-16 hours a day, up and down ice, snow, mud, sleet, rain, 0 degrees to 105 degrees with this 2wd machine and it drives like a dream and is still a beautiful red that looks like it came off a showroom floor. This baby has over 110,000 miles and will outlast any foreign SUV. Ford meant it when they said their trucks are built Ford tough. That means SUVs too. Best auto I've ever had and I have had a few good ones.

I noticed that a few people also have had the starting and stalling problem that I did for so many years. I attributed it to the cold winters in the Pacific NW. When I move to Arizona I still had the problem. I paid the dealership to find the problem and they did. It was a bad intake manifold gasket set. I paid $100 to find the problem and $20 for parts and fix it myself. Never again had the problem. I had the transmission replaced two years ago due to a broken fluid pump motor. I also have been told that the timming chain guides need to be fixed or replaced.

Bought at 30K and 30 months old. This gave me a little warranty time to check for bugs. Buttons in the steering wheel went out & passanger seat heater was always on. Wiring fixed & wheel replaced by dealer ($750) since then tires, brakes, oil & battery. A few minor problems. Passenger door doen't auto lock, am/fm light out (clock2), rear window loose (I often drive with it open. Great to haul in. I ski new powder. Great in snow with new tires( req: wilderness), slide a bit on ice but I do too. Over 6" I got chains. 12" No-problem! Leather seats are too hard. Engine lite on but I am getting +3mi/gl. so I have not reset it. Rough idle at start. Needs more nooks. Would not trade it for the world.

I have the all wheel drive model with a 210 horsepower V6. It is the best truck in the snow. It has saved us a few times. This is the 2nd Explorer I have owned and will not be the last. I have not done any major work to it. There is no comparison with anything in its class. It's the greatest.

I purchased the XLT with about 50K miles and am happy to report that I am now at 155K. Overall, it's very sure-footed in the snow and roomy enough to haul the family and the dog. On the down side, repairs in the last three years have been major. I've replaced two fuel pumps in 5 years, the rear differential, put in a new transmission and am now dealing with intermittent, unidentifiable stall/start problems (the car stalls while driving down the road and/or refuses to start for hours but no one can seem to find the problem- leaving me stuck on the road with no warning). The truck has received routine maintenance religiously and has never been driven off road.

I purchased this vehicle with 182,000 miles on it and it has run real good for me. It still doesn't use any oil, and all the power features work 100%. It also does real good on fuel 16-19 city, 21-24+ highway with the sohc v6 engine. The Eddie Bauer leather seats are real comfortable. It has a sharp turning radius, and the 4x4 auto gets great traction.

I purchased my Explorer after my GMC Sonoma was totaled. My back was injured so I was needed something comfortable and reliable. I found it in the Explorer. I have had only two mechanical problems: locking mechanism went out on the drivers door this year ($500incl labor) and the “GEM” module went out so I don’t have washer fluid on the windshield ($300 for part from Ford). Otherwise very reliable. Overall great SUV.

Purchased new and maintained. Kind of wish it would give me excuse to get rid of it, after almost nine years it would be nice to drive something different. It just keeps running and at this stage is not worth much as a trade in. It hauls construction materials, has pulled trailer, been in Northern Ontario and Quebec in the winter and is safe and reliable. I read about people with transmission issues and drive train issues but so far it's been bulletproof.

Bought used w/20,000 and am now up to 170,000 - no major problems. Replaced the ball joints was the biggest cost item. The Explorer has always started and is great in the snow, 4WD is superb and easy to operate. Had a Jeep Cherokee, which also was great in 4WD, but the Explorer is much more comfortable and roomy. Visibility is also very good. Worth a lot more than it's valued at, not sure why it gets any low ratings (because It's American I think).

I had a 1999 Ford Explorer XLS, by far the most amazing truck I''ve ever had. It made its noises in the suspension and so on but it was to be expected with the way I drove. It was really fast 0-50 and then getting from there up was a little slow but still not an issue. I recently tottaled it unfortunately after investing a good amount of money in it. I spun it 3 or 4 times and then flipped it 3 to 5 times and then into the woods and walked away scot free only little cuts from the glass a bruise on the shoulder from the seatbelt and a bump on the head and cut from glass. This car saved my life. I very, very highly recomend it for first time drivers

I've had my Explorer Sport for several years & and now at 133k & several WI winters later its still running well. The alternator is the only significant part that's failed. Keep up with the regular maintenance & you shouldn't have problems. Perfect for driving around town & for hauling things. I'll probably be replacing this one with another '02 or '03 since those were the last years for the 2DR.

I purchased new; after 124,000 miles I have not touched the motor. It is a V6 and have never added oil between changes. Except for replacing tires, brakes, and front ball joints the car is all original. It is sad to see the rating on not just Ford, but all American vehicles. I have had 6 Ford vehicles and 2 Thunderbirds 89 & 95. Both over 125,000 miles. 2 Town Cars, 92 was sold at 135,000; the 98 I still have with 93,000 miles. The V8 does use oil, but the V6 on one of T-bird's and on the Explorer never used oil.

We've had this car about five years and really had very few problems with it. We call it the 'snow beast' as its awd is fantastic in the snow. I've had a couple other 4wd trucks and this is just much more competent in poor conditions. It has the 302 V8 and can pull a trailer without complaining and is comfortable to ride in and drive. It beats you up at the pump, but it averages about 17mpg in mixed driving, so it's not much worse than your average minivan, suv, or pickup truck without awd! It beats the Jeep Cherokee I had prior to this by about 4mpg and it had the 4.0l I6 with part time 4wd,

I changed the thermostat once and the alternator once, but $800 in repairs over almost 8 years isn't so bad. The ride is bumpy. The power locks are about worn out and the radio randomly switches to CD randomly, but it's an old SUV. What do you expect?

I bought the car used at 19,000 miles and now have 130,000 miles on it. It has been a rough 130,000 miles. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and rotate tires. Thermostat has gone out twice, electrical system shorted out, causing $1,000 dollars in repairs, and my windshield wiper motor went out. Repairs keep adding up and I don't find it surprising that Ford is going bankrupt. I would love to buy another Ford, but I doubt that will ever happen again. American car companies need to invest in quality and durability or they are done for.

We bought the truck new. The check engine light has come on 7 times. Now the engine needs to be replaced. We have put close to a $500 in repairs into this truck every year for the last 7 years. We had to replace tires after the Firestone recall, the truck has had a shake in it ever since. When we go over a bump in the road or our driveway, the truck rocks so bad I feel like I have whiplash. I will NEVER buy another Explorer again. I begged my husband not to buy this one, now look where we are!

My wife and I have owned this truck for several years and have about 90k miles on it now. It has been very reliable and easy to maintain. I had the the ball joints replaced at about 70k miles, as the steering seemed slightly vague on-center. That cured the problem completely. I also had the EGR valve replaced at about 75k miles, and I had one of the chips in the ignition key quit working one time, which required a new key. Aside from those three problems, it has been a joy to own. With the 302 V8, the fuel economy is about what you'd expect (14 city/18 hwy) but the AWD is fantastic in the snow. I've owned 4WD pickups and the Explorer is much more capable. I would recommend this vehicle.

I know you wont believe me, but this is the best vehicle we have ever had. It is approaching 175,000 miles with virtually NO major repairs. I commute 30 miles each way to work, never have been broken down, and no problems at all. I purchased at 90,000 miles. It is a little narrow in the front seating, so a large person would probably be uncomfortable. 4WD works awesome; the gas mileage is killing us though. We pull our horse trailer and also large hay wagons for our horses. It has the power to do it.

Bought new in 1999 and have put on only about 40,000 miles. Has been very reliable, although it did take 6 attempts before the dealer was able to fix the rear wiper motor. Has been fairly comfortable to drive. The controls are reasonably convenient to use and the driver's seat adjustment works pretty well. I'd buy it again.

I bought a V8 XLT with the sport package brand new. Tows my 17' boat like it is not even back there. No real problems to speak of, except maybe poor quality of Ford service departments. The engine and transmission have been rock solid. I had some problems early on with the windshield wipers having a mind of there own. I also had the front ball joints go out at 50K. Everything fixed under (extended) warranty. At the rate I'm going, I don't think I'll get my money back (in repairs) for the extended warranty. All in all I have no regrets.

I have owned my Explorer for a year now and I actually like it. It's a 1999 XLS. I like the style of the XLS because it gives you the sporty look of the sport version in a four door. Although it is under powered on the highway with its OHV 4.0 V-6, it does well off road and with towing situations. Overall it is a good dependable truck but would fare better with the OHC engine or the v-8.

Replaced idle air control valve at 40k. Poor fuel economy especially with air on. NO POWER / ACCELERATION. No resale value. Pluses. Great in snow! Other than yawing feels quite safe. Purchased the car three years ago with about 60K miles. I loved the car and am just now hearing "whining" noises ... feel a little slippage from the transmission between 2nd and 3rd gears. Contemplating whether to fix the transmission or trade it in. I do love having an suv, sun roof, etc. It's roomy and I like the looks -- it also handles well in the winter. Until now, I've loved owning it and had no problems. However, it appears I have a transmission issue at this point and I'm not sure whether to replace transmission or not. Overall, I've enjoyed owning it. It did have relatively high mileage when I purchased it. Exterior and interior remains great.

Owned since new. Has been a very good & reliable vehicle. No major repairs needed other than to replace rear window motor & regulator in 2004 costing $340. Paint still looks excellent. No rattles. V-6 engine runs well & gets very good mileage for SUV. Local 14.5-17 mpg & on road 18-24 mpg. With street-type tires Explorer is quiet & rides good - combination off-road/ street tires are noisy & rough. Wheel alignment stays well. Nothing falling apart in interior. Steering is starting to whine a little at 55,400. Very handy for hauling furniture, boxes, etc. No major complaints!

My 1999 Explorer 4WD XLT has been a good all-purpose family vehicle for mostly around-town driving, vacations and 3 cross country trips in summer and winter. The 4WD was useful for those Illinois snowstorms as well as crossing the Sierra Nevada Mts, the Ozarks gravel roads and various other places. The normal 2WD offered a fair gas mileage of about 17mpg in the city (I drive conservatively) and about 20 on the highway. Notable Interior features I likes were the dual power outlets, 6 CD changer, overhead temperature readout (outside) and compass direction (useful more than I would like to admit). The split rear fold down seats were functionally useful. Normal maintenance required only.

Overall not a bad vehicle. Had very minimal problems with it. Poor gas mileage (14-16city), but to be expected with an suv. Under powered, pulling a double jet ski trailer it shifts down several times to keep up with its self. Seats are little uncomfortable. Ride is ok, not bad for size of wheelbase. No major problems mechanically. Rear wiper broke, headlight socket melted, power lock switch, and A/C leaks like most fords. Otherwise nothing broke. 75,000 now and havent replaced ball joints as most have, and havent had any transmission issues as most have. Have owned for little over 2 years and selling in a few days now for better fuel economy and comfort.

Bought used with 25k miles. Transmission (automatic) replaced with Ford rebuilt at 80K. Now at 140K transmission is failing again! This has turned me against Ford forever. Other downers: backseats very uncomfortable, rear seat belts torture passenger, poor city gas mileage, safety concerns with tipping over if tire failure, poor towing ability (UHaul won't even rent you a trailer), rear end wants to come around on gravel roads. Owning this vehicle for nearly 6 years has convinced me that I will NEVER AGAIN buy a Ford. My next vehicle will be a Toyota or Honda.

I hate Ford. No more American cars.

This car was great until around 50,000 miles when the transmission started acting up. It surges between 2nd and 3rd gears. It still works with no repair but still surges. I can deal with that. But now at 65,000 miles I had to have the intake gasket replaced at a cool $1,000! I was even sort of ok with that; but now the 4WD HIGH and LOW lights are flashing. I am sick of trouble codes with this SUV!!! I knew I shouldn't have given up my Camry. Why can't American car makers build a reliable car like the Japanese?

Requires the most maintenance of any vehicle I have owned. Timing chain tensioner (twice), emission control pump, ball joints (all), intake manifold gaskets, transmission valve assembly, O2 sensors (twice), required new transmission at 94K, the list goes on ... Some of these were covered under warranty. FORD so far has been unwilling to back the transmission. I had the vehicle into a FORD dealer at least 5 times between 30k and 75K (when the extended warranty ran out) and every time I was told that it was OK. Transmission failed at 94K. Pretty poor for a vehicle that is used as a daily driver and only hauled a small aluminum boat on a handful of occasions. Will NEVER buy another FORD.

Still do for the most part. However my new wife has inherited it. Which is fine, she drives only 5 minutes to work and with the 17mpg it gets. I can't afford to pay 2 dollar gas. We still drive it when we go places. It has been very reliable for me. I know a lot of people have had some problems. If you don't drive it like a bat out of hell and change the oil it will be fine. This is my very first car, and i only got my licence 3 months ago. I love the cars exterior design(its a lot better than the new ones), and it is the best small SUV on the market. The interior is good. The towing package is great as well. The only problems I have had is the transmission is flaky.

I was getting out of a 98 Mustang when I got this suv. It hasn't failed me except for once. I don't have too many complaints except for the driver's seat has broken, the rear windshield wiper doesn't work, and the middle console broke easily. It gets crappy gas mileage of about 14 city and 20 hgwy. I like my Explorer, but I don't love it.

After buying the Explorer with 18k miles, we have had nothing but problems. 3 sets of front hubs, 4 fuel pumps, vapor locked twice, 2 sets of brakes, starter, the list goes on. I will not bore you with all the details. The worst thing about it, the resale price drops so fast that I can't even get rid of it for a decent price (what I owe)! I will never own another Ford product!!!!

I love it!

I bought this used with high miles in 2001. Since then, I've had no major problems except last week I changed the thermostat. The exterior is the best lookin SUV out there, it's not funky or bubblely like some other SUVs. Great interior look, dashboard and lots of cargo room. Adequate power and acceleration. Next week I am buying a new Explorer and will continue to own one for a while.

I bought this vehicle new 4 years ago, and have mixed feelings about it. I have a decked out 4WD version with 4.0 SOHC, 5SP Auto, leather and sunroof. I highly recommend all of these features. It has been an all around good vehicle, with no major problems to date (75000 miles). I use the 4WD for the beach a few times a year, and occasionsal trail use for camping, and occasional utility trailer hauling. It has served me very well in this capacity.

This was my first Ford purchase. I purchased the vehicle with 60,000 miles. The only major problem I head is both heads cracked at 90,000 miles. Ford was great about the problem and replaced both heads under warranty even though the warranty had expired. I pull a boat with my explorer and has plenty of power.

I have put 15K miles on it, used. Good: Love the look, shines up well. No breakdowns or reliabiliy concerns. Interior is comfortable (Im 6'4), great seats! Easy to mod (grill guard, stereo). Good offroad/bad wx. Strong engine. Bad: Poor gas mileage (bad as a V8 in city). Ride is rough unless smooth road (good shocks and tires help). Strange sounds from random places. Needs check-up often to replace poor OEM parts. Ding-magnet (Ive gotten 5 nice dings). Overall, I like the truck and the pros outweigh the cons. Find a low mileage model, an extended warranty (havent needed it), and have it checked by a good mechanic. I give the truck a 7.

For the most part, and probably since I have the extended warranty, my 99 Ltd with 4.10 LS and rear load leveling (air shocks) has served me very well over three years now. Sure, it's been in the shop, no more than my Integra, Camry or others I've had. Most problems have been with minor items dying such as the rear wiper motor (2x), rear gate shocks (2x), door locks not working from remote and front brake grinding (dealer probably over-tightened the lugs when rotating wheels). I recently replaced ALL fluids ($400US) at 40k and it runs better than new. Trust me, it works and will probably extend the life of your "Exploder".

At 37000 miles all four tie rod ends needed to be replaced. This seems too soon. The cup holders and extra storage in the front area is extremely poor. Driver seat does not go back far enough for leg and arm comfort. Performance is very good, and gas mileage is surprisingly good for such a large vehicle. Side to side rocking on rough roads seems excessive.

Purchased the Eddie Bauer 99 with all trimings. At 8000 miles the Transmission exploded and had to be replaced. . The SOC engine had many repairs on the timing belts and finally they pulled the engine to do one. Still noisy timing belts when cold. Ford is useless. Last week I had the 60,000 mile $400 service done. Today they had to replace front wheel bearing and many antilock brake parts.

I cannot begin to tell you how thrilled I am to be getting this load of junk off of my hands tomorrow. The amenities in the limited trim are very nice, the issue is that they don't last long. To name just a few...the rear wiper no longer works, the radio display is blank, the power drivers seat no longer works, right rear passenger window motor is dead, passenger seat heater is out and the cd player is hit or miss. After all of these years one would have to believe that sooner or later, Ford will finally get it. Trading in on a Honda Pilot tomorrow morning...can't wait.

We purchased our Explorer with about 47K on it. It is certainly a comfortable vehicle but at 67K things are beginning to get a bit quirky. The worst aspect if the handling. Between my wife and I we have owned quite a few vehicles from Cameros to VW Vans. This one is one has, by far, the most evil handling of the bunch. Our daughter will start driving soon and we have already told her she will not drive this vehicle. It seems to just look for an opportunity to break the rear end free.

I purchased my Sport in the fall of 1999. I was happy at first but oh how things have changed. The gas mileage is horraid, all the recalls form the tires to the problem with the windshield wiper/turn signal electric box (3 times there) and then the problems with the ride quality. When taking turns it feels as if i'm going to lose control of the car and tumble over making me feel unsafe. And now that I have gotten to over 40,000 miles the engine is giving me problems. The only good thing about buying a Ford is Ford Credit, other than tht I will never buy a Ford again. It seems all the old sayings are true ...

All things considered, Ford did a pretty fair job of making things right during the Tire Crisis with Firestone. We have new tires, and we enjoy our Explorer. It's still a truck, though, no getting around that - just tromp on the gas, and you'll get the point: little acceleration, big noise. Still it's pretty, has a large interior, and our Limited Package is extremely comfortable. It is a great "utility vehicle," and it's good with long hauls.

Ball joints replaced 15 times, 2 leaf springs broke while driving down the road. Numerous electrical problems. Tailgate doesn't open properly. not enough room to list every problem! So I decided to try one more American made car. I checked out the Explorer. It looked really nice. The inside was designed nicely. I have had this car for 4 years now and it has been wonderful. I bought a used Ford Explorer XLT with 43000 miles to haul around stuff every once in a while. The only problem is that the rear window is not 4 feet wide so you can't haul plywood or sheetrock inside the car!! Some other SUVS in the same class like Isuzu Trooper you CAN haul plywood inside. Its a fun car but not big enough if you're looking to move stuff around for home projects.

My wife has a 1999 2d 4wd Sport model. Like most for cars/trucks, this thing is a piece of junk. The overall build quality is poor. The plastics inside are low grade quality and the vehicle reliability is terrible. She has had the airbag go out, and needed major work on the engine. At 35,000 miles over $4,500 in repair work on the engine needed to be performed. Driving the Explorer is a nightmare, with uncomfortable seats and ride. We are looking into trading this in and getting something more reliable, like a Honda CR-V. I'm still amazed the people spend $30,000+ thousand on any Ford product. They are over priced and of poor quality.

About 5,000 miles ago I had to have the transmission rebuilt because of the value bodies in the trans were failing. I am glad I took out the extended warr. they covered the rebuild except for the $100 deductable. If I hadnt had the warr. it would have cost me $3200. Other than the transmission the SUV has been great. I have loved driving it since I got in it in January. It has been reliable. Even when it was having tans problems, it was still going and going.

Bought this vehicle with 9,800 miles on it at the end of the model year. It has had six recalls including Firestone tires, faulty airbag wire harness, faulty wiper wiring (wipers would turn on without warning), and two reprogrammings of control modules. Ford had to replace lower front ball- joints at 28,000 mi. under warranty. Fuel system sensor went out at 37,000 miles (car cut-off repeatedly at road speed) and Ford would not cover that. Combined with poor gas mileage in town, this is a TERRIBLE vehicle. Consumer Reports rates the 1999 Explorer as Do Not Buy because of reliability problems.

No problems after 54K miles. Very solid construction. My Chevy's never go this long without needing repairs. I have the smaller V6. Pleanty of power, but not a racer. The ride is rough, but It's a truck! The under carriage is looking a little rusty. The paint still looks great. I am 6' 4" tall. This truck is a little too cramped for me. My wife and I vacation in it every year anyway. I want to move up to an expedition, but I don't want to give up my perfectly reliable little truck. I had the Firestone's replaced with Pirelli Scorpions. Awesome tires! It's only 2 wheel drive. I load up 240 Lbs of sand tubes in the winter . Cuts right through the snow!!

Overall, a decent auto, however, the V8 seems to have a problem with broken ignition wires (as early as 30K-40K miles). Ford is not willing to acknowledge this problem, but has plenty of replacement wires in stock! Also problems with noisy front springs and the brake pedal. Poor quality of rear wiper, electric windows, luggage racks. Comfortable seats, decent interior layout, good comfort features (lighted mirrors, remote door locks, etc.).

I bought this car in summer of '99 with 11k miles on it and now 3yrs later and now at 60k miles, it still runs great! It was my first car at age 15 and I think this vehicle makes a GREAT beginners car. The Winsheild wipers and Firestone recalls were a bit of a problem but the people at Ford replaced the wipers hassle-free and Firestone bought me $400 Goodyears. This SUV is really good when towing(Jet Ski) and I didn't have to buy a towing package (Just a ball). Overall an EXCELLENT car!

Don't Buy This !

I purchased a lightly used 1999 Explorer Sport in January, 2000. Last month, during the 60,000 service, I was told that I needed $1,000 worth of repairs just to pass state inspection. This is my 2nd (and LAST) Ford Product. The car is poorly designed, difficult to drive, and now ... unreliable. Consider the Explorer a "high maintenance" automobile and avoid it at all costs!!! I do not drive this vehicle off road and have always changed the oil, rotated the tires and performed all of the scheduled maintenance. I'm headed back to the Hondas .. at least I know I'll get 100,000 miles out of them with little to no repairs.

We have had no problems and the vehicle has been well maintained. After three years, there is minimal to almost no exterior problems. Total mileage is 33,000.

Other than the squeeks and rattles with the interior plastic panels, the truck is awesome. The AWD is remarkable in the snow and ice (We live in boston). The ride is somewhat harsh as we changed out the "26lb" Firestone tires immediately after buying the vehicle and replaced them with Goodyear Wilderness - obviously a good call. Anyway, the truck looks and runs great - recommend to anyone.

I have been able to use this SUV in a variety of conditions including ice, deep snow, mud and rocks. True, its a different vehicle than the 2002's, but I have a great time off road and in adverse weather. I dont have many miles on it, but I work it pretty hard. Several times I have jumped out of the car to see what damage I have done and I find that there is not a scratch. Plus it starts and runs better than my '02 Mountaineer.

This vehicle is impressive. It is comfortable and handles like a pro in bad Colorado weather. It does seem a little top heavy and drives like a "truck", but this isn't terribly annoying since I indeed purchased a utility vehicle. The Firestone issue makes me leary, but I think overall it was blown out of proportion. Highly recommended.

Thought it might be a bit smoother on the ride. Still rides like a truck but I thought at the time it would be ok. Overall I have been satisfied with the truck. 30K and I just had a thermostat stick. Warranty repair so no $$$ to me.... Seems to be a smell coming from the AC system which cannot be improved so the dealer has said. They tell me that the AC unit is always on and leaves a residual amount of condensation on the system which leads to this smell. They tried to inject air freshener into the system but it smelled worse for about a month so no more of that!

I Love It.... this SUV has been fun to drive, reliable and it handles very well in bad weather. Other than 2 minor recalls and the Firestone mess, I have no mechanical problems at all with my Explorer. I put Pirelli Scorpions on to replace the Firestones...what a difference. This truck handles like a dream.

Overall we are happy with the 99 Explorer Sport. The vehicle is reliable, comfortable, convenient, and cost effective. We have put 25K miles on this vehicle (starting at 30K) and have only had to replace the oil pressure sending unit @ $30.

Highly Enjoyable

I have to say that I love this vehicle. Drives great, feels great, and gets me where I need to go. Has a bad wrap for some reason, but for me, it does what I need it to.

Love my Eddie Bauer!

Have owned the vehicle for almost 2.5 yrs and it is as pleasurable to drive today as it was on day one. The V8 engine has plenty of oomph and gas mileage has been better than expected (15 city/18 hwy). The brute force of the engine and luxurious styling and features make the vehicle very versatile. Even though it is 4x2, I have taken it off road in the Arizona desert and it performed fine. So far, have not had any problems except for a minor electrical glitch with the wipers that was promptly fixed. Also, replaced the Firestone tires, even though I really liked them and didn't think it was necessary (dealer really pushed to replace on a maintenance visit).

The vehicle was bought new, for the end of model year vehicle. There are some rust under the car, nothing major but annoying. The dealer won't fix under warranty since it "did not rust through" as require under the warranty criteria for repair. I order the rustproof paint through internet and took care the rust myself. The vehicle got some rattle once in a while; the dealership has been very good at fixing these "recurring" issues. The dealership service has been OK – The dealer does not know what tires are qualify under the Firestone tire replacement campaign; I know more about this issue then the dealership by simply go to the information from Ford's company website.

This is my second ford. I will not buy another. I just got 50,000 miles on it and the transmission went out. This is not a mustang that i'm spinning the wheels, this truck does not go off road. they want $ 2900.00 to fix it. this truck will be on the market as is. i will buy a Jeep.
