There is a common issue with ford truck's. The gear shift shaft went out and if expensive to fix. The truck would not go into park and had to be in nutral to start.

I bought my baby new and it has 230,000 miles on it. No major problems, only routine maintenance (tires, batteries, brakes, oil changes, tune ups) over 15 years. I had to replace the heater/A/C diverter door at 227,000 miles at a cost of $237.00 at a body shop and now the park lights won't turn off after replacing the battery. Those are minor issues. It's in the shop now and regardless of cost, it will be repaired and I'll continue to drive it. It still looks great inside and out. I love it! I recently purchased a new car due to the high mileage and I hope my new Nissan (not a SUV) is as dependable. Would have purchased another Expedition, but I don't like the new body style.

this is by far one of the best suv's built in the 2000's. sadly after 9 years we had to let her go, to get a newer more gas efficient suv, we got our EXPY used from a dealer with about 50k miles, I didn't EVER invested a penny in repairs other than oil changes, new tires (20's for the change of looks only) and smog checks. this suv had a lot of power, plenty of room, nice looks, design and interior as well as parts well equipped. my only deception? about 11 miles in city/ 14 in high way, no more! other than that I would be still driving it........

I bought my 1999 Expedition Eddie Bauer at a little over 78,000 miles. It had just one owner prior, and was well maintained and cared for. The truck is awesome to say the lease. Stylish, BIG, yet very comfortable to drive, especially on the highway. Gas mileage? It has not been an issue because all I do is drive to school, work, and basic daily errands like grocery shopping and doctor visits. I think that a properly educated truck owner must know that proper maintenance like oil changes, tune-ups etc. are required, just like with other cars. This truck is built very strong and sturdy, and I feel powerful in the drivers seat when I drive it. This is the best SUV built in 1999, bar none.

We have owned this car for about 8.5 years, we bought it used from the dealership at 98k miles and have since spun the odometer to 275k. We are a family of 4 and have done quiet a bit of travel and moving. This car has taken us on multiple long trips and plenty of space for gear and leg room for everybody. On one long trip hauling a u haul in the dark we hit an Elk, sadly in the middle of nowhere, but the car took us another 250 miles to civilization with a cracked radiator, misaligned front end and even rode smooth. This car has never and most likely will never die. Love this car, even gets decent gas for a full sized SUV.

I have had the Expy for a couple years and now have 270100 miles on her. One engine re-build and transmission is all I have had to do over the years.I hear about how the milage is, but I am getting 17ish in town and 20ish on the Hwy with the 5.4, people if dont shove your foot through the fire wall upon acceleration this is possible milage for all! I cannot believe how reliable this vehicle has been weather hauling the boat or the groceries this vehicle has meet my needs. She has handled all Wisconsin can throw at it. Ice, snow, and heat she comes through!!! Henry would approve of this bad@ss machine. I cannot belive someone traded me a mint Expy for a 2wd Sportage straight up, what a goof!

Of all the vehicles I've owned inn the past 26 years, this is by far my favorite. In the 10 years I have owned it, it has never left me stranded. I've replaced the tranny and performed routine maintenance and put in almost 190,000 miles. The interior controls are well placed and cabin space is very pleasing. The SUV handles well and still accelerates with verve.

I have only owned this vehicle for about 6 months. It had 113K miles on it when I bought it. It now has 117K. The vehicle is great. Nice ride, looks good and very comfortable. I wish it was a little more peppy but hey it does weigh 2 and a half tons. Also the fuel mileage could be a little better but factor in the weight, its all wheel drive and it has 22 inch rims on it. It's not so bad. Overall I would buy again. It has comfort and features and may I add, this from someone who has never been much of a Ford fan :)

I'll buy another

I love my truck. We bought it 5 years ago with 90,000 miles on it and have 142000 on it now. No problems whatsoever. I've pulled a 28' travel trailer foe the past 5 summers. Even though I have the smaller 4.6 motor, it handles it just fine. The tires still have lots of tread with over 50,000 miles. Like everyone else, wish the gas mileage was better. Very comfortable ride. Most impressed with zero maintenance issues. I will buy another one of this vintage whenever this one finally dies. I prefer this body style to the newer model. I have the cloth seats and they show virtually no wear. Ford did an outstanding job on this truck.

Have had 4 years, good all-around vehicle. Criticisms of Ford design quality are merited: Found out car had a leaky head gasket when we towed a 3-ton trailer and all the coolant spilled out. $1700 to fix? Poured four cans of goo into radiator; that was 30,000 miles ago. Never overheats! Weird self-leveling suspension, air hose broke ($130 at dealer). Auto fulltime 4WD noisy, but helps in stop-n-go when slushy snow. Good steering, tires wear even. Other than that, normal wear - A/C compressor, brakes. Gas mileage per EPA estimate when you obey speed limit. If you were expecting a luxury version of a truck, this isn't it. Satisfies our need for a family car.

Bought new for a family of five. Three boys under the age of 8. Salesperson was a complete tool but, the vehicle and service dept. of Ford Dealership have been professional and knowledgeable for 10 years. Been to many vacations (Disneyland, etc.) ski trips in Mountains and all over the country for baseball tournaments, etc. NEVER ONCE HAD A PROBLEM ON THE ROAD. A beast in the snow, and has been my wife's dependable everyday car for over 10 years (Current Mileage 168,000) and has been one of the best purchases I have ever made, of any product. Own 3 other Fords (F-150's) and I have had the same reliable service. Will Definitely purchase another Ford if same results as our Expedition.

The Best.

Purchased with 90k.What can I say,of all the vehicles I have ever owned, this one was my favorite.I had the sport model. The most spacious and confident vehicle I have ever driven.sure it had some maintenance issues, but so does my Camry. The ac was the best at getting my rig cold in the hot summer months in Las Vegas, and the AWD was a blast to drive.Took it to Big Bear one Xmas, and it tackled the snow with ease.I would never had sold it,but for financial reasons, she had to go.I have regretted that decision ever since. One day I will buy another low mileage Expedition.

I used to drive muscle cars, and my last vehicle was a 95 Jeep Wrangler. I wanted/needed a SUV. I bought the 99 Expy a few months ago. I have only two complaints. The factory cd changer quit working and the transfer case seems to not want to come out of 4 hi. After a pricey estimate to "diagnose but not to repair the problem" from 4 different shops, I pulled the front driveshaft to temporarily save my vehicle from any major trans damage.

I purchased my Expedition 3 years used with 33000 miles. It now has 125000 on it and I have not had any problems with it. I've taken many family trips all over without any issues. I wish that all the vehicles I've owned were as trouble free as this one. I have no plans to replace it and hope it continues to run forever.

I have never had any major problems with my Expedition at all. I love the way it drives, it has plenty of room, and handles well in any condition. I bought it in Oct. of 2003, and it had 53,000 on it. It now has 83,000 and runs perfect. The air conditioning in awesome (I live in Vegas). I have only had to change out 2 of the coils. Other than that it has only needed the regular maintenance stuff, brakes, tires and oil changes. I just love it , and know that it has many more years in it for me and my family.

I bought this SUV new in 1999 and now have 95,000 miles on it. It has performed extremely well over the years and has been very reliable and easy to drive. It is great for towing boats and Waverunners as well as U-Hauls to take kids to college. The throttle valve assembly was replaced at 86K miles but otherwise no major repairs other than routine maintenance. I would definitely buy another if I needed a large SUV.

I am currently on my 3rd Ford Expedition. I have been involved in two accidents with the previous two and just bought my third. In both accidents, one being a 60mph head on collision and the other being about a 45-50 mph front end crash, there was no one hurt in our vehicle; both accidents resulted in the Expeditions being completely totaled. The Expedition may be tough on the wallet when it comes to gas and mileage but i have just purchased my 3rd Ford Expedition and would not even think about driving anything else. You feel like you own the road when driving them and in two very serious accidents with no one getting hurt, I think they speak for themselves.

Bought it new for my wife, the list price was over $39,000. We had so many little problems that's cost a lot to be fixed. Air ride bags $800. Air conditioner. leaking water $750. Power bank (it's like spark plugs) $800. Heater trap door activator $1000. Head light auto switch, rear wiper, sticky linkage cable...etc. All of that on top of bad gas mileage. I just can't help it but compare it to my trusty 1994 Honda Accord with 153,000 miles and tell my self why... why... why... you stupid had to buy a Ford?

Great buy for the family and off roading

I have owned this car for about 5 years and i am very satisfied with the car. the family is comfortable on long trips and has enough room for trips to the Home Depot. we have dirt bikes and tow a 4x10 trailer with no problem. As we connect the trailer the back end goes down about three inches, but within seconds the airbag suspension turns on and lifts it up to normal height and it even helps climb the dirt roads. I have only had two problems so far. My head gasket had to be replaced at about 50,000 miles and my heater core had to be replaced at about 70,000 miles. And it was not a happy time because my Ford dealer has terrible service. Other than those two things the car is a great car.

Tranny blow out at only 37,000 miles. Ford no help! This is the second Ford we have owned with this problem. 1st was a 95 3/4 ton turbo diesel. Tranny and torque converter blew at 8000 miles, under warranty, but nothing but problems after. Total lemon. Traded in in 1997, leased an Expedition for 2 years, multiple recalls; then stupidly purchased this one in 1999. Nothing but recalls and problems again. Ford does not stand behind their cars! Will never purchase another Ford again. This car likes to float all over the road, unreliable, faulty parts etc. Never again!

We bought this truck because we needed a vehicle to easily tow a boat and a trailer. We only have 74,000 miles on it and so fat the suspension had to be repaired 2 times, the torque converter, the instrument cluster, the mirror, the window, the stereo and now the transmission again and the head gasket nothing -- but problems. I would not recommend this truck to anyone; a true lemon. We only put 22,000 miles on this truck; the head gasket should not go this early. Always did the recommended service and oil change. Ford needs to seriously improve quality.

I purchased this vehicle new in 1999. The reason I purchased it was because it was a vehicle I could use to haul the entire family and it had 4WD. It has lived up to my expectations. I have found it easy to drive; not at all tiring, and it has only had limited issues since I purchased it. It does have/had two problems which seem to be the norm for FORD: 1) front brakes do not last past the first 10K miles and 2) the accelerator develops a slight stick when accelerating, which will require a few hundred dollars to have the accelerator et al. replaced. There was a minor issue with the rear wiper, which was fixed when they replaced the motor. I would definitely consider buying another.

Bought it new for my wife. She owns a business that requires hauling heavy AV equipment and much travel. It has been a great vehicle. Needed its first tune- up at 96,000 miles. It is very comfortable and the leather seats have held up well. We have taken many vacations with it and the entire family (of four) loves the ride. Just had to replace the alternator and battery (at 117,000 miles). The paint job (Metallic Spruce Green) looks great for a vehicle that has never been garaged. Only problem has been with the odometer. Since about 5,000 miles, it comes on and goes off and when trying to keep track of the business mileage, this becomes a nuisance.

I bought my rig new and loved it until the warranty ran out. New power steering pump at 38,000 miles, would not come out of 4WD because of bad switch, then the big one at 60,000 miles - head gaskets went bad. $1,800 repair, new Ford parts and now - leaking again! Heard of several that have had this happen but Ford claims no knowledge of the problem and we are stuck. Fuel mileage lousy, 14 mph on highway and about 11 in city. Good power for towing with 5.4 engine. Love the ride, room, 3rd seat. Been a Ford driver all my life but will be hesitant to continue with the quality issues.

I hate driving trucks, but got this thing anyway. And I'm impressed. Note that my rating is relative to other trucks -- I drive a Continental normally, so these grades aren't relative to it. For example, for a truck, my fuel economy rating is 9. Compared to the Continental, it'd be about 4. See what I mean? As a 6'2" footer, I'm comfortable. Power is so totally there, I don't know what the complaints are about -- and remember, I'm used to a Continental. I'm used to climate control -- set it and forget it. It'd be nice if it were standard on the truck this expensive (yeah, I could have looked harder). I replaced the stereo with a junkyard model with CD/cassette (2000 Explorer stereo).

Well, we've had issues with our Expedition just as others have. Little things breaking down--rear windshield washer, cheap interior materials, heated seats and mirrors failing. For a $40K truck new, you wouldn't know it by the lack of quality. Frustrating to say the least. We will not be buying another Ford Product. Our 20 year old Toyota Landcruiser is much more reliable than this Expedition. Plus fuel mileage--even with a new fuel filter and dealer servicing, it's around 10 city and 14 highway.

Expensive to be worked on. Parts not cheap nor the tune up. Seems to hold up well up to about 80,000 miles, then lots of things go out under the hood. Overall a nice vehicle to drive, roomy but gas isn't cheap these days!

Bought this Expedition new in 07/1999. Rides great, lots of room, easy to drive, enough power to tow 23' boat w/ease. Electric system is absolutely horrible. All 3 wiper motors, 1 power window, and 1 heated seat have been replaced. Some fuel/air sensor on the engine was replaced. Now all of my warning lights on the dash i.e.; 4x4, ABS, and airbag, have lit up. Dealer wants $270 to figure out why. Doesn't include how much to fix the problem. I've spent more money repairing this 5 year old vehicle than I have on my 15 year old Toyota P/U. I will be trading this in for a Sequoia this week.

This is the first vehicle I've ever bought an extended warranty for (gut feeling?). Two weeks after the purchase , the head gaskets had to be replaced. 30,000 miles later, this vehicle has had over $5,000 of work done on it- second set of head gaskets, auto transmission seals, you name it. Frankly, I can't believe what a POS this truck is. Like the title says, this will be the last Ford product I ever own.

Our expedition was an ok SUV. Breaks were exspensive to replace and the engine light loved to come on and cost us money to get the SUV annalyzed only to find out they had no idea what was wrong. The car would run ruff and sputter after the rain and than dry out and the light would go off. We had it checked again before our family vacation and were told there was nothing wrong. Well the spark plug blew out on the Penn turnpike in route to our vacation destination. We found out it would be at least 3330.00 to fix it but it would take well over a week. We over payed for an Explorer and picked up the Expedition on the way back. Build a better product.

We purchased this vehicle used and purchased the extended warrenty which paid for itself in no time. We've had to replace the brake pads twice because of leaking rear seals, the rear axle, and the transfer case motor. The heated driver's seat broke. Now the alternator needs replaced and now the engine makes a funny clicking noise until it warms up. I think of my 16 year old Honda as more dependable and it has certainly cost us less in repairs over the last two years. They thought perhaps a $700 tune up would fix its problems. That was just two months ago. I've had it, we're car shopping!

mushy ride, lousy brakes, no cargo space, sways from side to side like a carnival ride, floats and bounces down the road. Expensive, quick to loose value, scratches too easy, body like a tin can, oversteers, feels like it leans too much while turning. Fast, 17MPG on highway at reasonable speed Wish I did not buy it

Gas isn't the best but it is a big suv and gas prices are high.I heard if u remove third row seat you could save a mile per gallon. So far i am happy with my expo.It runs very strong.

I purchased my 1999 Expedition for my wife who wanted a larger vehicle for safety reasons. After owning the vehicle for 3 months the transmission went out. $2600 later were back on the road. 15 months later the transmission went out again. A freind has a 1999 F250 whos transmission went out 2 weeks before mine did. Another Freind just purchased a brand new 2004 F350. At 6000 miles his tranny went out on him also. Beware Ford parts are very expensive. Ford may claim they have the most popular truck, however, in my opinion, I will never by a FORD again.

This truck was purchased used with 56K, now has 62K and everything is starting to go wrong with it! Head gasket is now leaking oil ($1500 repair). Heated seats have been replaced already ($370 each), rear door molding is defective, wiper/turn signal switch defective-wipers go on whenever they want to, Gas mileage is VERY POOR for this vehicle! We are now getting rid of this and going with a Japanese SUV, hope you do to! Don't waste your time on this car if you dont like going back to the dealer every 3 months.

Last problem exhaust mainfold bolts rusted off with major repair exspense. Ford will not stand behind product. This will be my last Ford product and the last for my company which purchases many vehicles. I approached thess problems as a individual client not thru the company. Because of the treatment Ford has lost a lot of business.

Rain, heat, snow or ice, it just keeps on going without any trouble. I am seriously thinking about trading in my current Expedition for the newest Expedition currently on the market.......

I purchased it new in September 1999 after wrecking my beloved Bronco. I threw the third seat away for it is a waste of space and too heavy. I commute in Buffalo, NY to my hospital job in as much as seven feet of snow, ice. I never missed a day of work. It never failed to start even in -17 degree weather, I still have the original battery it came with. I recently relocated to Las Vegas. I averaged 17 mpg with the truck loaded down. I have had only general maintance performed on the vechile. Except for a set of tires everything is original.

While in warranty I was forced to visit the dealer 4 times for repairs. But it was after the warranty expired that things really started to go wrong. Having spent over $9,000 in repairs since the warranty expired I am convinced that Ford sold me a defective vehicle and are continuing to sell this same vehicle still today. Sure the new one looks different, buts thatÂ’s just marketing hype. Inside this vehicle hasnÂ’t changed, just ask any honest engineer or maintenance tech at Ford and they will tell you that the changes are cosmetic.

From the first year we had this vehicle it has been one problem after another. We've had the transfer case replaced twice (supposedly). We think the dealership never replaced it the first time. Replaced starter. Replaced shifter cable to linkage. Radio display consistantly does not display and scans through stations for no apparent reason. Passenger window works intermittently, so we don't use it. This was enough to keep us from ever purchasing another Ford vehicle. We are considering trading it in and going into to debt for a Honda Pilot even though our Expedition is paid off. Biggest mistake we ever made.

This vehicle has been nothing but problems. My electrical system started failing before I reached 40,000 miles. I have a vehicle that has less than 65,000 miles and I'm replacing the electrical system in the column for $1200. I ahve put more than $6000 into this vehicle over the past two years. next week i'm going out to buy me a Japanese (Toyota sequoia or Nissan Armarda) SUV. I ahve had it with American vehicles. I have owned all brands and now i understand why people buy foreign vehicles. I also understand why American companies give you a three year warranty, their vehicles are onbly designed to last three years.

Yesterday I was involved in a serious accident with my 1999 Expediation. If it wasn't for the fact that the truck was so well built and the handling was so tight, I wouldn't be here today. The vehicle has been the most problematic from the start. The dealer was horrible at purchase and the service was deceptive and expensive. Buy the extended warranty it will help you out. Things that occurred three recalls, failed radiator resulted the failed electronic plugs, failed ABS sensor that resulted in the brakes prematurely wearing out thus had to buy new brakes for $650 for all new brakes not covered on warranty it is an maintenance item, and new brakes are nearly worn again dealer installed soft brake shoes. SUV bounces like a truck does not have a smooth ride. Gear shift rattles while driving.

When we set out looking for SUV's, we decided that it had to easily tow our travel trailer. Our trailer weighs in around 5,000lbs. We wanted something that was smooth on the highway, had room for the kids, and would tow easily at 14,000 feet. After searching all the imports, and American vehicles we settled on the Expedition for it's comfort and prowness. We are enjoying it so far, and can't say anything really bad about it.

You really cant beat the comfort, room and the ride quailty of this large suv. Heated seats, rear air and leather all around are just some of the luxury ammenities. With todays gas prices it does not shine in comparasion to the smaller suv's on the market, however interstate milleage is much better than I expected, holding and average speed from TN to FL I got 22mpg where as in the city it gets about 12.. Enough room to comfortable seat 7 adults and haul everything you could need. I have used it to tow a small honda and it has plenty of strength. Gas milleage while towing is dramaticly changed from 22 to about 14.

After 3.5 years it is frustration. Stuff just breaks on it! We have replaced: door locks, fuel pump, gear shift column cable, the entire electronic panel and cruise control and other things I can't remember. It all started with a squeak about a week after we bought it. . I took out for the first time ever, an extended warranty, it has paid for itself. As much as I love my truck, it is frustrating to pay all that money for a product that has failed to live up to expectations. I can't really recommend it to anyone. Maybe I got that 1 in a 1000 that just has issues but from what I read, I don't think I am that unlucky.

I have a 1999 4.6 XLT 4WD Expedition. It is a very reliable and dependable vehicle. It was built solidly and has had very few trips to the shop for work outside of normal maintainence. There was one incident with the transmission at 30K miles. They dropped it out, flushed it and cleaned it. Put it back together and viola, problem was solved. Given they only had to replace the gaskets and the transmission fluid, I consider it an overall minor incident. 12K miles later my expy is still cruising along.

WELL ONLY ONE SUV OUT OF FIVE I HAVE PREVIOUSLY OWNED WAS WORTH BEING UPSET OVER WHEN IT WAS TIME TO SAY GOOD BYE AFTER THEY CALLED AND SAID THE LEASE WAS UP. MY 1999 EDDIE BAUER THE GREEN MACHINE.I LOVED IT AND IT LOVED ME ESPECIALLY AT THE GAS STATION BOY CAN THEY DRINK GAS AND AT $1.45 A GALLON ON AVERAGE IT CAN HURT THE OLD POCKET BOOK HAULING THREE TEENAGERS TO BUDDIES HOUSES AND SPORTS VENUES DAILY. WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE WORTH IT.ANYWAY WHAT A SAFE RELIABLE VEHICLE I LOVED IT.

I love my Expedition

I have had nothing but great experiences with this truck. I have taken numerious trips in this SUV with my three children and the have been very comfortable. We have always had plenty of room when on the road and the ride and handleing was GREAT! I'm actually getting ready to purchase another!!!

This was my first Expedition. I have since bought a 2002 Bauer for my wife and she loves it. We have three kids and there aren't many vehicles that you can put three car seats across. I have the 4.6L in both and I think they have great power. Gas mileage is awful but what do you expect from a beast like this.

the beast is the best. quality, ergonomics, nvh, power, visibility, stability, manueverability, structural integrity, comfort, sight line to traffic. negatives:brakes(now addressed in 2003 model),steering is fine but needs monitoring at cruising speed.(again addressed in 2003 model). all in all a solid performer and well executed truck with luxury features and an almost limo ride, formed in textures and design that should please almost everybody. nice work ford! Kinesis.

Definitely a Monday or Friday car. Ford and the UAW should be ashamed of themselves for manufacturing my particular bucket of bolts. Terrible transmission was replaced at 5,000 mi. and is still clunky. Exterior plastic trim has faded. Lots of little things go wrong constantly like rear wiper motor, radio, compass, mirrors. Lotys of things have gone lose with screws, trim, fan motors etc. Very sqeeky ride. It's an overpriced pickup truck with extra seats. Would be perfect vehicle if it add an extra 6 inches behind 3rd rear seat and was built like a Toyota. In summary, American made hunk of junk

Bought used, previously registered as a diplomatic vehicle for the United Nations in NYC (per Carfax). Now has 97000 miles on it. Lousy gas mileage, but comfy enough for a 6'4" driver. Clutch convertor problems on '99 models, as attested by another '99 owner. AC & heat strong, especially with rear HVAC controls. Leather holds up well, and 4wd works exceptional.

I have had my vehicle for going on three years and I have loved every minute of it. I have 60,000 miles on it now and I have had no major repairs. There was something wrong with my starter coil but that only cost me 60 bucks. I love it on the highway and in the city. I want to check out the 2003 model....

Absolutely no breakdowns or fixes in 35000 miles. My family enjoys the roomy interior on long trips. Great in the snow. Rough ride though with solid rear axle. Second seat is easy to work. Third row seat comes in handy at times.

Have had the vehicle for about 8 months, bought used with 27,000 miles. Now have 34,000 and I like it very much. Very comfortable, good power (5.4), looks nice. Lately it unfortunately has been at the shop. Had a fan belt pulley repaced, radio had short in it, power drivers window broke, and now it has been in shop for 3 days because of a bad smell coming from A/C area. Technicians are stumped. Other than that I like the vehicle.

After 2.5 years and 52,000 miles with my Expedition, I have no regrets. Love the looks of the Eddie Bauer as well as the standard features. This vehicle seems to be just the right size - a little smaller than a Suburban (easier to park), a little bigger than a Tahoe/Yukon (more cargo/passenger space). It has more second seat leg room than the Suburban. It's a great tow vehicle with more than adequate power. I wish a power passenger seat was available. Road noise on concrete pavement is a bit intrusive as the original equipment Goodyear RTS tires wear down. The ride is a bit jiggly (it has the 4-corner leveling system), but the handling is very car-like.

Generally good vehicle. No issues until past month.. Disc brakes started squeal. Time to change pads.. Get in and find that the caliper pistons, 1 is broken and not applying pads and 2nd is cracked. (Original - PLASTIC piston) A $100 job for pads turned into $500 for pads/calipers(2), rotors. While under the car, found one of the link for anti-sway bar broke/missing - 2nd cracked... ADD $165...
