We got this car as a gift (yay!) with 62,000 miles on it and after 2.5 years it's now almost at the 100,000 mile mark. We had absolutely nothing wrong with it the first year other than burnt out blinker bulbs. In the last year, we had a broken timing belt (thank God the engine's non-interference!) and just repaired a leak in the brake line, which corroded the brake shoes with brake fluid. Whoops. We also had to replace the heater, but it was apparently still under warranty after 16 years. I agree with others that the cupholders suck--they're small and tucked under the console, but it's not a luxury edition, so I don't expect it to be fancy. The engine runs great, although unlike other posters I find it doesn't accelerate well on the highway. The transmission is great, it's fun to drive and easy to park, and it has character. I definitely want to keep it for years to come.

I really just love Oliver

I have the Sport Model. It's green with 112k on it. It has the Suratec DOHC 24 valve 2.5L V6 and it is so awesome to drive! It gets okay mileage. But honestly the issues I've had are minor, and are from the previous owner not taking care of it. All I have left to replace is the O2 sensor. I really recommend this car. I'm 19 and this is my 4th car. And it's by far the most reliable I've had. And all my cars have been 2000 and newer. It will last me throughout college no doubt.

I will have a hard time parting with this Contour!

I took on this contour when it had 196,000 miles. The seller fixed an exhaust problem. I replaced the upper outer ball joints, had the brakes redone with new fluid, did rear struts, changed the front wheel bearings, changed the transmission fluid, P/S fluid, drained and flushed the radiator, changed the valve cover gasket and I do oil changes every 3000 miles. I get 30 mpg. Just now I may be looking at changing the water pump and timing belt. But this car is worth it! It has 230,000 miles and still running strong.

This is a fun car too have it gets you to where you need to go. Few problems but nothing big. I have about 11,000 miles on it and it still drives like I just got it. I don`t cool in it but its a ride and it beats riding the bus every morning for school. Need to replace the muffler system but I been needing an excuse to get a louder muffler. Good car handles great and its the only car I will ever trust in the snow and rain. Thats big, but you got to remember its a FORD!

I hate this car every week there's a new problem. it would do good on gas if the O2 sensor didn't go along with the manifolds that need to be fixed. every other week the check engine light comes on as always. i have only had this car for about a week and im about to push it into a lake. this car is nothing but a money pit. and of course for all you guys will the warped dash o yea im with ya too although its not that notice able it makes the car seem like a p.o.s o wait it is. NEVER BUY A FORD or rich people that like to waste money.

Bought it new in 2000. Sport SE V6, auto. 95,000 miles motor, transmission still strong, dash pad, rear brake proportioning valve replaced under recall-new pad better quality-still perfect, solenoid idle valve, air conditioning compressor bearing seal had very slow leak-compressor was replaced under extended warranty, sun roof motor intermittent-replaced, oil pan gasket replaced, front brake pads, new battery. Despite these problems this car is FUN. I flush the cooling system every two years and change the oil regular, its had 10 Minnesota winters and almost no rust still! Still has the original exhaust!

Still going!

I bought this car back in 2001 and it had about 32,000 miles on it. It had previously been a rental car so I am sure it was driven hard those first miles. I have found this car to be extremely reliable. It is nothing fancy but it gets the job done. Other than routine maintenance (brakes, new tires, oil changes, etc) I have replaced the timing belt, had the control arms replaced, and I had some issues with the check engine light but that is pretty good considering I have been driving this car for nearly 9 years! I also got rear-ended and opted not to get the bumper fixed and I just kept the money. I was hit at about 20 miles per hour and you barely see there is damage.

Bought 4 years ago, wasn't looking to buy Ford, but found it, tried it and fell for the smooth, quiet ride. Love the way it picked up speed. Front seating very comfortable, back seating fairly good, little tight for long legs. Love the V6 except for gas mileage 20-22 city, 25 hwy. Been an excellent family vehicle. Lots of room in truck, love the sun/moon roof. Air cond. great, heater takes forever to warm but great once heated. Doors ice over very easily, dash is peeling up and back, cup holders are bad. Even stood up well to hitting a 200 + pound deer, damaged only hood, grill, and headlights. Oxygen sensor needed a good cleaning around 105k miles, very common among Fords.

I have had this car since 2001 and despite it not being the best looking car on the road, it has been a great car and I can't justify replacing it. Since purchase I have only put about $1200 into it which are thing I consider normal replacements (timing belt and front control arms) after nearly 10 years. One thing I would like to note is that after 118000 miles, my last fill up I averaged 30.73 miles per gallon. I consider this excellent considering the mileage on the car and the fact that I usually drive between 70 and 75 on the highway. Overall, this has been a great car. Not a chick magnet but a darn good car worth keeping.

Well for what I can say is that its only a good car for a few years but after 100,000 miles you better just hang it up problem after problems and it drives and performs at a milaseconds and havent drove any other ford better but the enignes fail badley after 100,000 miles and the transmission begins to have major problems only after 80,000 miles and that in my book is very poorly and I think ford should replace the engines and transmission including the malfunctioning computer systems at fords cost because why should we pay 15 to 20000 dollars for a car that wont last for more than 115000 miles when the car has always been worked on by a pro and then having to another 8 grand to fix it.

150000+ miles and still running!

Car has been great so far. Replaced timing belt twice. Replace more parts other than the timing belt such as idler pulley, and you will not have the same problem. Other than that, front end suspension parts have been replaced as rust and worn out busings have taken their toll. If I am lucky, the car will rust out before the car mechanically dies (Here's hoping!)

I bought a 1999 LX with 22,000 miles on the clock in 2002. Been drving it as daily commute since then, and the odometer now reads 240,000 miles. Sporty handling, solid platform and a preppy engine makes this car a breeze to drive. Never once breaks down for the past 7 years, and maintenance limited to regular oil change, couple burnt headlamps, a few sets of new tires and replacing the timing belt once. Will definitely buy another Contour in the future. The Contour was named Mondeo everywhere else in the world, and the Ford Fusion in the States is actually the new Mondeo outside N America. That's definitely going to be my next car of choice.

Bought it used with 14,000 miles on it. I liked the car for the most part, but I had to stick a lot of money into new springs and struts for both the front (70,000 miles) and rear (105,000). This was a factory problem (springs were made too short and a common problem), but Ford refused to cover the cost on my car because not enough people reported this problem from the factory where mine was built. Also paid a lot to replace a seal on the gas tank (70,000 miles..another recall on cars from a different factory, but not mine). Recent transmission leak and oil leak. Needless to say, I'm not thrilled with Ford's service. Don't know if I'll buy another Ford.

We have been driving this car for almost 8 years. It has 220,000 miles on it, of which 185,000 we put on. The front rotors have been replaced twice, and a wiper clutch was replaced. Besides that just the standard belt, tires, light bulbs, etc. have been replaced. I commute 100 miles a day and have had no problems with its dependability.

It's a good solid Car.

Bought the car used. Drove it for 2 years and put 48,000 miles on it. Sold it to my son as his first car. Now has 150,000 miles. Replaced the trans and timing belt. Its a great car for a first time driver. Maintenance is key, change the oil every 3months and monitor the fluids. It's not A piece of junk like others have said. It's a good solid car, and yes when the miles add up it will need repair, but show me a car with 150K on it that doesn't need repair.

Purchased in Feb 2008 with 91,000 miles on it. Put in about $400 worth of work into her (oil change, power steering fluid, timing belt, fuel injection service, tranny oil change & fuel filter) Has run like I drove her off the lot brand spanking new! Now I know it's only been about 7 months but I can tell you that I am very happy with this very, very well built car. Great handling & packs a punch under the hood.

The Contour is what's known as the Mondeo in the rest of the world. It was designed to be in the same area as cars such as the BMW 325i and Infinity G25. Its a great car and has more power than it seems. The SVT version is a very fast and powerful car and many people underestimate the Contour overall. Its a fun car and has never given me any major problems to date. I have owned a 1996 GL with the I4 ZeTec and currently have a 1999 SE with the 2.5 V6 Duratec. Both are awesome.

Contour was worth it.

This Contour is the 4cyl SE. I bought it with 65k miles, and now have 147k. Only thing I have done to it is timing belt and change the timing pulleys (recomended by Ford) and oil changes. Just recently had to replace a suspension part for 30 bucks, but that is all. some repairs can be costly, but, with proper maintainence as mentioned, will be a good car. It handles great, (better than my Tbird) and gets good economy. The one problem- rocker panels are rusted out, but I lived in a dirt road/ salted roads area.

I bought this as a program car. The door hinges have a clip on top. When the clip corrodes, the door falls off. It happened to me, you can't buy a clip or clip and hinge pin. The dash plastic is peeling up. I am a slow and cautious driver and the transmission had to be rebuilt before 60k miles. The trunk leaked from the beginning and the doors alway freeze shut in bad weather. Sealed beam headlights won't stay sealed. I would not buy another one.

Even though I bought this car when it was 8 years old, I never imagined I would have so many problems. I have repaired every single item and component on this car INCLUDING the IGNITION SWITCH! Good car? NOT! Good mileage? Only if you consider 22 mpg good mileage for a small car with a 4cyl engine. Now the heater stopped working! Remember, at Ford, quality goes in before the name goes on! NOT! NEVER BUY A USED FORD, the new ones are bad enough! I have NEVER had anything but problems from Ford, regardless of the model, T-Bird and Lincoln inclussive.

I got this car with 84000 miles from buy here pay here. 5 weeks in, the seals blew out of the motor, but it had been sitting on the lot for a while. Since that repair it has ran like a champ. Very strong 2.0 5 spd man. Very surprising power and handling. Cupholders do stink. The dash is warped, and yes plastic pieces (ie air vents) do fall out. Trunk is big. I like the wraparound headlights. Gets about 24-28 city mpg and 34-38 hwy mpg. Since gas is priced so high this car is very economical. Very fun to drive too. I dont like the hubcaps though.

This is my second Contour, currenty I own the 1999 LX. My first contour was the 1996 GE. After I crashed my 1996 contour I did not want to own any other car but a Contour. I can honestly say that car saved my life. The 1999 is a better year than the 1996. Overall I have had no problems with my car and I just love her! I have owned this car for a few years now and bought it with about 50,000 miles. I have taken it on many road trips & have never had any problems. I drive about 100 miles round trip to work daily and get about 30MPG. I have 111,500 miles on the car and plan to replace the engine when the time comes. I would suggest to anyone who is intrested in buying a used car to get the Contour.

This has been the worst car I have ever seen. It has left me stranded about 3 times, and that is not good because I'm just a high school student. An important note - NEVER consider this kind of car for a beginning driver. It is way too undependable. We have had to replace the engine transmission, brakes, just about everything and there is still something wrong. The inside is falling apart, the windows are starting to go off-track, and one of the doors will not open anymore. It was a big mistake for me to choose to by this car. It might have been kinda cute but looks are definitely NOT everything.

Average car. Good condition when I got it. Some minor problems needed to be fixed. But all repairs were affordable. The paint scratches very easily. Minor problems on engine. Interior is a little challenging when things start to pop up (dash panel pad). It's a nice car in some ways. Meaning average. Saves gas a lot more than older cars I've driven. Just don't speed. So far reliable performance.

When I bought it there were only 33,000 miles on it and it was in perfect condition. It now has over 50,000 miles on it and still runs like new. It has been in a few minor "incidents," but has come out virtually unscathed (after being involved in 2 accidents, total repair costs amounted to only $200 ... COMBINED). It's a tough little car and has great pick-up and power for it's size. The gas mileage is pretty good as well (about 17 - 20 mpg depending on how hard it is driven); the only bad part is that the tank is small (13 gallons I believe) so it needs to be filled up a bit more often than other cars. But it handles well in the snow (front wheel drive) and I wouldn't want to drive anything else.

Disastrous quality. Car's value now = $0

Don't ever buy Ford! This Contour, at 6 years and 100,000 miles, was a nightmare since I bought it in '02 at 46K miles. The car's trade-in value is about $1500; that's a 6-year-old car that was $21,000 new! The BIG problem is that to get even that low trade value I have to make repairs of about $1500 (the catalytic converter, about $1200, and the oxygen sensor). Basically, that brings the value of the car as it is to $ZERO. I called Ford, they won't pay for the converter (warranty expired at 80K). The V6 engine is crammed and labor around it is VERY expensive (the alternator at 70K miles and again at 80K, A/C line at 60K, A/C clutch at 85K about $850).

We bought our '99 Ford Contour over a year ago with 75,000 miles on it. The only thing we had to do was regular maintenance, oil change, brakes, etc. The interior was good but the dash started warping after the first month we had it. But we do live in Las Vegas were it get from any where from 160 degrees inside a car when it's sitting there parked. It never broke down on us, and we never had any problems really. I would say this is a good car for a student, a high school kid maybe. But for a family it’s really small. But it’s very dependable as long as you keep up your owner duties.

All in all, I've really enjoyed this car. I buy a car primarily for the engine, and the Duratec V6 has been outstanding. You can't kill it if you shoot it, and it gives good power and mileage (25 city/30 hwy). Some things are starting to break now (the ignition lock, for example, plus some oil leakage), but I've driven it long and hard. I'm really sorry that Ford quit selling these in the US (still available in Europe as the Mondeo, for all the good that does me); I would gladly buy another.

I can't say enough good things about this car - I love it, even at 140,000 miles! We did have the dashboard problem that was fixed via recall, but this car just keeps going and going like the Energizer bunny. The 5-speed manual transmission is very smooth when shifting. The car corners very well, handles very well in snow, and gets great gas mileage (around 34 mpg). I'm extremely disappointed that Ford no longer makes this model, or anything comparable in a 5 speed manual transmission.

We had to replace alternator, check engine shows up all the time, you won't feel safe driving it because there is always a possibility at the back of your head that says, it might break down. The chances are always big for Ford sedans.

please someone take this car from me!

This is a very poor choice for a car. It is not fun to drive in the least, the automatic tranny is very unresponsive and unprecise, and the engine has a terrible drone to it. I average anywhere between 18 and 30 mpg. This car only has 38xxx miles on it, never abused, and always properly maintained at the Ford dealership. The interior is actually falling apart, numerous plastic pieces have fallen off including the entire dashboard peeling up.

I bought my Contour V6 with 56,000 miles. I bought the car for it's strong engine, good looks, and tight sport suspension. Good interior room overall, and trunk is spacious. I love the way the car handles - especially with a little upgraded rubber. Disc brakes all way around with ABS and traction do a great job keeping the car going the direction you want it, and handles very well in the snow. Wish I would have gotten a sunroof and the 5 speed manual transmission for resale. At 60,000, the trunk sprang a leak, had to have the seals replaced and some brake light wiring that was damaged because of it. Other than that, this car has been a pleasure to drive.

This has been a fairly good car. No engine or major problems at all. I think that the gas mileage could be alot better for a four cylinder. The only horrible problem I've had is a bad dasboard. I had my dash replaced by the dealer because it warped in the sun peeling back from the defrost vents. The new one did the same thing. The dealer will replace it for about $1200.00 dollars! They're stupid. They replaced my defective one with another defective one. Other than that, it's been a fairly decent car. Personally, I would not buy another contour, or another Ford. I didn't like the way they handled my dash problem. Very cold, not willing to help solve the problem.

I got a 99 contour se, w/ only 66k miles. it's a great car w/ the 2.5L V6 24V DOHC. I haven't had any major problems thus far. the driver's side window is probably the major concern, the window won't roll down. and the gas gauge gets a bit picky when it gets to a quarter of the tank. really sporty in black, rear spoiler helps to complete the effect; alpine stereo made the factory speakers incredible; seems to hug the ground in turns, which makes it all the more fun to drive. overall it's the best car i've had.

This is a car that could have been great but for nagging NVH problems. Pros: Wonderful 2.5L DOHC V6 mated to a manual 5spd. Never stops pleasing! Had veh up to 115mph grinning all the way. Exterior styling is awesome. Chassis dynamics are very stable, very predictable. Cons: From day 1, nagging squeaks & rattles from the dashboard drive me crazy. The dashboard was a design blunder of the worst kind because otherwise, this would have been a great car. Road isolation is not great, particularly when sitting in rear seat.

I purchased my Contour brand new in 1999. I drive it back and forth to work, strictly in city driving. Gas mileage is relatively good, considering its strictly stop/go and my top speed is maybe 30 MPH. Its never been in the shop other than for routine maintenance. Overall, I love this car, and plan on hanging on to it for many more years.

I have read a lot of reviews about Contours; either people love them or hate them. Mine has been great - I love it. No problems to complain about. Sure the dashboard warped, whose didn't. The shop took care of it - problem solved. It is a great performer, very sporty, good gas mileage, all for a super price. I have over 60k in 4 years and nothing out of the ordinary has gone wrong. It is too bad they stopped making them. The Focus is inadequate as a replacement.

The Ford Contour is a Great Drivers car. With a V-6 & manual transmission it is extremly well balanced. They are very forgiving (neutral) if you go too fast into a corner. The 4-wheel disk brakes are very controllable, even without ABS (opt). My other car is a Corvette.. My motto "Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow".

SE sport V6 with 5 spd transmission is an excellent drive for the price. Interior features have drove me nuts. Dashboard peeled and replaced twice, endless wind noise and continual rattles in the dash board. The original tires were Firestone Firehawks and were worthless on anything other than dry pavement. Replaced at 30k with Bridgestone Portenza's and significantly improved control and ride. I've enjoyed the car, but next time will spend the extra bucks for a higher class car with better fit and finish. Also, don't have any idea what the engineers were thinking about with the cup holders.

Research indicates that the Contour is more reliable than your average American car, though it is still no Toyota or Honda. I am very pleased with the performance of this vehicle. The 2.5 liter V-6 doesn't provide neck snaping acceleration, but is quick. 0- 60 in 7.7 secs. The motor is smooth. Fuel economy is acceptable. The manual trasmission does it's job well. The car handles much like a BMW, which is to say very well. The build quality is only slightly above average. The Contour is cheap to buy, fun to drive, and modestly reliable. Too bad it has been discontinued. Overall, a fine car.

This is one of the most popular cars in Europe, where gas is $4 a gallon, where you can drive at 100 mph, where sports cars were born. In America we like fat, floaty, bloated behemoths, giant pick- ups that never haul anything. Come on, all you people who have problems and then complain loudly about it have no conception of maintenance. Your 88 Chevy pick-up never needs its oil changed, except for maybe every 50,ooo miles or so huh ? That 350 just runs and runs doesn't it? Yea, at 7 mpg, and you don't have to change the oil cause it leaks, and the quart you add every week is basically self changing. The Contour was a great car, but we just didn't get it.

I bought this car intending it to be a heavy-use vehicle for a long daily commute. I have put well over 30000 miles per year on it. This car has stood up to the mileage in fine form while showing very little in the way of wear and tear. While not particularly flashy, the front seats are comfortable, the V6 performs well, and the reliability has been exceptional. The price was very reasonable and I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of it. I'm sorry that Ford decided to quit selling the Countour in the US. I would have bought another one. If you're looking for a good reliable vehicle to drive until the wheels fall off, you could do a lot worse.

it's my 2nd ford. 1st was a 1994 escort wagon, 5-speed. i got it at 100K, drove it for another 40K, not a problem, except wear-and-tear stuff. the contour: i love its 6-cylinder engine + 5-speed transmission. it's alos sport tuned. i got it at 46k, now has 62k and did not have any major problems. my oppinion: if you drive and maintain them right, ford cars are OK for the price you pay. sure, honda and toyota are more reliable, but guess what: that's why you pay almost twice as much on a used japanese car. so before buying a used car, do your research and decide what you want: a more reliable car for a lot of money,or a ford for less.

First of all, there is this annoying "moosing" noise that the car makes which supposedly comes from the air intake. It's a horrible sound which causes the car to stall out at times. Also, my dash has warped to the point where it's peeled back so far that it almost touches the windshield. Lastly, when you try to accelerate hard with this car, it sort of "bogs down" before it catches and goes. When it does catch though, it goes like gang busters. Other than that, the car is great. It handles very well and I do find the car appealing to the eye. Oh, I almost forgot....... it's quite rough on the pavement.

I was only 200 miles over the 70,000 emission warranty and the dealer refused to help. The gas mileage is 17.33 MPG, on the HIGHWAY!It produces a horrific smell during and after acceleration. It has alot of wind noise. The brakes are underpowered. It is uncomfortabable on highway trips. The transmisson slips and the speed sensor has gone out.Ford service is absurd. Problems with transmission, radiator, alternator, distributor, rotors, brakes, bearings, tie-rods and axels and stereo components. I have practically had this car rebuilt at my own expense. I thought I got a great deal on a good car. I've had Fords before so I expected to do some maintenance but this car has proven to by an astonomical financial burden. Thought the Honda was the bomb until I drove the Contour. I tryed to put the Contour into a "controlled-skid" at a midspeed (30-35 mph) with a very sharp turn, then darn thing wouldn't let go of the road. Tried it three times before giving up. The layout and instruments are easy to understand and utilize. The trunk is roomy. It is a blast to drive. Very low cost of ownership. I do my regular maintenace and have had no problems at all. Knock on wood. My first one was a 98 with 4 cyl. (plenty of power) and I upgraded to a 99 6 cyl to get more bells and whistles. Loved them both.

A quick summary of problems with the car: constant wind noise on the front passenger door, water leaks into the trunk, air conditioner went after 1 year, rattling noise while accelerating, clogged catalytic converter causing my damage to my exhaust manifold. I love to drive this car and it handles well on the Autostadas here in Europe. Reliability is horrible, rear taillight had water in it after we puchased it which had to be replaced. The starter has gone out twice in 10 months. The first time it was only the starter, the second time it was the starter, flywheel and cables to the starter. The dash is peeling up and has not been fixed because dealerships here in Europe will not work on my car because it is American Specs. This is my last Ford and I have owned 2 other Ford trucks! I bought my Contour SE with the sport package thinking that it was going to last me a while. Unfortunately, the trunk developed a major leak which the dealership couldn't fix after 4 tries. The leak was so bad, mildew began appearing in the car and the metal parts inside the trunk began rusting. Ford Motor Co. was no help, the dealership had poor service, so I had to get my state attorney general's office involved. Sold the Contour within a year and took a huge hit on resale. Will not buy a new Ford again.

We loved the car so decided to buy a brand new Contour thinking that proper maintenance and care would eliminate the reliability problems. It didn't. Our new car has been in the shop many times since we bought it. The starter went out after 5 months, the engine blew at 22k miles, the dash warped, the emergency brake mechanism has had to be replaced, and the trunk developed a major leak that required 5 visits to the dealership to fix. My wife purchased a loaded Contour SE (2.5L v6, leather, moonroof, etc) and it has been adequate, but nothing more. For having a v6 it doesn't have very much of a punch from the line at all (I come from a strong v8 background though). The leather is ok, but nothing fancy. For being a front wheel drive car I was very dissapointed in how it handles in the snow. If you think you are interested in a Contour I would strongly suggest taking a look at the SVT version.
