Got this car for college for $1600 back in August with 117k on it. It now has 126k and I gotta say I really am impressed with this car. Very spacious upfront, huge trunk for how small the car appears to be, the 2.0L with the 5 speed is an absolute blast, transmission is pretty responsive, the independent rear suspension adds a responsive handling characteristic that makes the car quite good in the corners, the mpg is incredible (rated at 21 city, I usually get 24-26, hwy rated at 32, driving 70 mph I get 35, 80-85 mph I get 32). Grew up driving camaros, f150s, expeditions, Datsun/Nissan Z cars, SRT4's and I gotta give props to this little car for the amount of fun it is.

RIP MysTAKE

Purchased my 98 Mystique GS two years ago for 1,800, with 86K on it. Since then, must have put 3K worth of repairs into it. The interior lights would fall down when driving. Headlights were awfully dim, replaced them and made a slight difference, but with the fogginess of the plastic what do you expect? Brakes were replaced and still were .. clunky when stopping. Next was the transmission! Oh boy, that went at 100K, got it replaced for the amount I paid for the car. About 2 months ago, it started an awful rattling noise when starting up the car, and when the A/C was on. Took it to my mechanic thinking it was the compressor, turns out it was the engine. Im sure theres more, but never AGAIN!

Nothing to get excited about

I bought my mystique sport when I got my licence 5 years ago. I bought it around 70k miles and now it has just over 100k. All I can really say is you get what you pay for. It's spent its fair share of time in the shop and I wouldn't really rely on it more than I have to to take an extended trip over a couple hours. That being said it was in an accident that I'm sure rattled some parts, causing some of the problems I've had. It can be somewhat fun to drive, although it's by no means a particuarly fast car. The sunroof leaks (directly on my crotch) and I've had the overhead cabin lights just completely fall out. Not the worst 1st car, but I'm looking to trade up asap

My parents got this car for my sister when she was 17 as a first car. The first day she drove it, when she drove faster than 45 the car started to buck, the transmission was slipping. We've put more money into this car then we paid for it. Now I'm 17 (she's almost 21 now) and it's mine now. Not too fun to drive, it's very jerky when changing gears and it's really uncomfortable. My dad and I drove about an hour in it and we got out numb. After fixing it up a bit, she's running pretty good, but we still call it the Mercury "Mistake" because it is pretty much fail. The trunk for some reason floods when I open it up after it rains

this was my first car it had 90k at the beginning. I drove it all over the place and still do. It's alright in the gas i have to fill it up every 5 days (i drive the car a lot) but i have done a lot of repairs in the past 4 years, timing belt, water pump , brakes, battery has been replaced. It all happened in the past 4 years. It has 160 k check engine light came on don't think is worth fixing it, also air bag light came up 2. Ive invested so much $$$ in this car when is totally not worth it, it has last this long just because of the repairs. Back seats are uncomfortable. times are hard and had no option to repair it. best advice don't buy it!

I bought my 4cycl car from a private owner 4 years ago with 98,000 miles on it and now I currently have 161,000 miles on it. It has been a good little car, but I have had to put some work into it. The little things seem to be going wrong with it. When I got it I found the thermostat control sensor was messed up and it actually reads hotter than the engine is actually running. This last fall I had to replace the fuel regulator and now the car just stops running for no reason. The mechanic can't even figure it out. But I will keep on driving it because it is a good little car. It's fun to drive and cheap. Once it's dead I will probably go get another one.

I bought my car in 2007 with only 12,000 miles and I've since doubled the miles. I purchased it from my godmother who didn't put a cent in the car, other than changing the oil every 3K miles. I love, love, LOVE the car! Although it's not a hot rod, nor one that will turn heads, it is the best car I've driven and the most reliable. It's very comfortable to drive and has amazing pick up! I've only had to change the battery since it was original - over 11 years old. I recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a modest and reliable ride with decent gas mileage.

When I bought this car it was 1 year old and had 30,000 miles on it. It is running as good as it did 10 years ago. I have had a few repairs on it - like the alternator and transmission. It has been very reliable for me, and I would buy one again if they were still made!

My Mystique surprised me with its driveability. Handling is very good, Zetec 16V is responsive and fun to drive. Economy at 70 MPH measured on odometer is 38 MPG. I got this result 3 X. Five speed manual is a very good shifter. Shifter has alot of feel and is fun to drive. This car out handles my daughters 2008 Fusion. I dont know why Ford stopped production, except that it was to expensive and to small compared with the Taurus. I have driven the Taurus (2005). Mystique is far superior in most respects. This is another European Ford that was not appreciated by Americans. Too bad.

4 cyl Zetec with the CD4E automatic trans. Looking for a small but not cramped car, We chose a red Mystique. Although the styling isn't avant-garde, it is still an attractive car. The car had 108K miles when I test drove it. In spite of this, it was tight and was as devoid of squeaks and rattles as one could expect. What impressed me right away was how well it held the road. I took it around the perimeter of the GM Proving Grounds, got it up to about 55 mph and YANKED on the wheel, serpentine fashion. This car was absolutely stuck to the pavement. It is kinda light on horsepower, but it's the best everyday 4 door car I have ever driven.

When I first bought the car it only had about 80000 miles on it and I was only using it to commute to work and school. Within the first week of owning the car I had to buy a new battery because I was driving and the car shut off on me. In the end I think it was the alternator because this past summer I had to replace that when the car shut down on me at an intersection (btw I was 9 months pregnant with a small child in the back not the best experience.) Throughout my ownership I have had the routers done, the flywheel and starter replaced and the last thing was the alternator. In the end I donated the car I just didnt feel right selling it to someone with so many problems.

It lives up to its name..Mercury Mistake

I bought this car with 40,000 miles on it and now its at 113,000. I have mixed feelings about this car because it has lasted me this long and has great gas mileage but I've put in more then what I paid for in repairs. It's just constant little repairs that cost big bucks! And not to mention my transmission went out shortly over 100,000. It seems that once you hit 100,000 the car goes to crap. I know others who have had the same problem. I will never purchase a Mercury again even though I've heard the Mystique was the worst made model. I just don't trust Mercury

Everything is in such amazing shape, and I've had this car for three years now, its almost 10 years old, and it drives like it's brand new! I recommend this car to anyone who's a Mercury/Ford Fan. This is one of the best cars they have ever made.

I bought this car in 2006 with 30,000 miles on it for about $4000. It is a nice looking car and it drives nice, but i have had problems with it. Although it drives well, it likes to lock up and cut off on me; this is due to the full pump problems (just like the ones in its sister car the ford contour) that can't be pin-pointed. I have also had to replace the brakes shortly after purchasing it. Recently, it has been eating gas, i've put about 1000 in repairs in it in the last year, and my transmission just died on me a few days ago! Im not happy with this car and i have only had it 2 years. I wouldn't reccommend it useless you know how to fix cars.

Bought my car in 2004 with 62,000 miles on it for $3000. I have been driving it ever since. Just rolled over 165,000 and the car still runs just as good as when I got it. Along the way I've replaced an alternator, a set of rear shocks, and a belt pulley. Other than that just oil changes every 3000 and its good to go. Finally purchased a new primary car but I am keeping my Mercury until in dies.

4cyl GS. Had to write a positive review after reading many of the others. Bought the car in 2002 with 40000, and so far has far outlasted my expectations. After 187,000 miles, this car is running great. I have changed 2 water pumps, 1 timing belt, 1 thermostat, and 1 blinker switch. For the money, this is the best car I have ever owned. Changed oil every 5k and Tranny fluid every 30K. Follow the recommended service items and problems should be minimal. Granted, I dont get any double-takes from the ladies here, but for everyday transportation, it has been great.

I bought this car brand new, have taken good care of it for the most part. It has had a lot of recalls, but they were little things and didn't take the dealership long to take care of them. I have had little problems with the car, had to have the AC redone, only have replaced the front brakes twice, and am currently having the back brakes done too, which isn't a necessity yet, but thought it was time to do it since the front ones needed new pads. I have found it is great in the snow, I have done better with it than people that own trucks. It is one of the best cars I have had and/or driven in my life. I have heard it called the "Mistake", but so far it hasn't been one for me.

My LS Mystique (Mistake)has been nothing but a problem from the beginning. The transmission was replaced before the car was even three years old. The original paint job began to crack at less than three years and had to be repainted. The dealer installed premium 6 disc CD changer and premium speakers have had excessive mechanical difficulties. The list of constant repairs has been going on from the beginning. I will never buy a Mercury again and for that matter will never buy an American car again. I will most certainly be buying a Toyota for my next vehicle.

Fun to drive, great handling and acceleration for its price. Only cons are, gas mileage isn't great and fifth gear revs pretty high in highway driving (adds to fuel economy problem). Also the front cup holders are poorly designed. Wheel bearing problem around 100,000km was the only big repair.

What i mean is like a lot of european cars like Alfa or WV, When it works it's awesome. V6 acceleration, handling, ABS-less 4 disc braking, everything is there exept reliability. I didn't had problem with the man. transmission, power steering and radiator. Everything else broke; I even lost a wheel!(broken studs.) Biggest repetitive problems came from the front suspension and bearings. The instrument cluster PCB failed intermittently and the infamous plastic impeller of the water pump. Expensive ignition module broke at 60 miles, engine mounts, and one of the too many O2 sensors lit the "check engine" intermittently. Too bad for Ford, it could have been as good, even better than the Mazda 626

This is my second MIGHTY MERCURY!!!!! I love these cars. Perfect size for everyday use. Great ride, handling, and power. First one was a 4- banger, this one is a 6, much better engine. Unfortunately, there is a SEVERE transmission problem with these things. Mine and a relative AND a friends all went around the same mileage. Still worth the $1000 to fix it tho:)

Man i thought this car was gonna be the bomb when i bought it, but it turned up to be a disaster. I paid 4000 dlls for it and i had to waste about 2200 more in the a.c., transmission, and several electric shorts that happened in the first 3 months that i had it. I gotta give it to the car that it was pretty fun to drive, because you could go about 100 and it wouldn't even tremble. But after about 3 months of 100 mph drives, the poor car ended up in the shop with damage of about 1500 dlls. if you want good advice, take it from me: never, if you can help it, buy a Mercury Mistique. it will cost you!!!!!!!!!!

98 Mercury Mystique bought w/ 82,000km in Dec. '02 and have driven it over 60,000km (38,000 miles). Interior - well-built, attractive - nothing worn, broken, or faded - after cleaning, interior looks new - no rattling due to solid constuction - excellent seats for comfortable long- term highway driving Exterior - not the sharpest car but overall is attractive - paint is durable and still shines Overall - car performs very well - plenty of power - great highway driving - sport-tuned suspension provides a smooth ride with little roll when turning Have not had one mech. problem with this car. Tranny man tells me "I see alot of these things with exactly same milage... transmission is full of weak parts" Had him put in used mystique tranny with 60K on it. Only got 12K more miles off it. I bought the car with 15,000 miles on it 3.5 years ago and today it is junk. It was a constant nightmare. The timing belt, sensors, struts, spoiler, overhead interior lights, broken power windows, and numerous other electrical problems ended up costing a fortune in repairs. Last week cracked gaskets enabled antifreeze to leak into the oil, which totally destroyed the engine. For a car with slightly less than 90,000 miles on it (that has been regularly serviced throughout the years), it ended up being a major disaster. PLEASE think twice if you are considering the "Mistake" as my friends have come to call it.

I got my Mystique in Aug 2000. It had 14K miles. Since then it has been 100% reliable and a joy to drive. It currently has 60K miles & the only mechanical problem was when the O2 & fuel sensors had to be replaced Sept 03. I drove it through the worst road conditions I have seen in Jan 02. 12 hours to travel 400 miles, counted 38 accidents, but my car didn't slide once. Had a bad accident with my beloved car last Wed and it may be totaled, but it saved me and I was able to walk away.

I fell in love with the looks of the sporty LS with the alloy wheels and spolier. The V-6 was very peppy and it handled suprisingly well. But my pleasure has not lasted long. My disappointment started off with samll things. First my head lamp brackets cracked. Light in my dash burnt out. My dome light fell out. os2 censor went out. Water pump went out. Cellunoid on the transmission went out. Then the whole transmission went out. The only thing that hasnt went wrong is the muffler bearings and blinker fluid. All this before I reached 100,000 miles. I still love the looks of the car and the performance. But it has cost me a bundle to keep up.

I have had my car almost a year. It is a great car to have. Especially when caring around friends or your little brother and his friends. It is kind of though a good family car not so much for a teenager. It is great though for a 16 year old that is just starting to drive. It is a great car. It runs great with almost 80,000 miles.

does a good job on the expressways. It also performs well under other driving conditions. Makes you feel in control.

I got this car brand new. I have had no major problems with it. I think the 2.5 liter V6 is really peppy. The premium sound with single cd is great. I like the rear spoiler. The ride is a bit stiff but the handling is good. The paint is really holding up well with a zymol wax once a year.

I bought this car new not knowing that Ford likes to make inferior brake rotors that tend to warp quickly. I had many problems with the car as soon as the warranty ran out. How convenient. I had to replace the break twice in 65K miles due to warped rotors (which can't be turned). The wheel cylinder sprung a leak the power steering pump leaked dry, plus all the recalls. Amazingly, I always had great service from all of the dealerships that I had to visit. The V6 is a must, but nowadays smaller engines do just as well and don't suck down the gas. Leather is nice if you don't live in Vegas. It's probably a good thing that ford discontinued the mystique.

I purchased my Mystique new. Since 98 I have had several recalls, problems with the AC leaking on the floor board runing the carpet beneath. Sensors, check engine lights etc.The plastic headlight covers fog over, a local company repaired them for 150. Something like that should be covered by mercury, for safty if nothing else. It soes effect your night vision. The grill had to be replaced due to pitting, they were suppose to put a silver one on and put a smoke color instead, said they no longer carried the silver!! Go figure!! HOWEVER, my favorite is the Transmission falling apart with only 60,000.!! I'm sure I am missing something.....

Have this car for over 2 yrs. Bought it with 20k now has 50k. It's fully loaded V6 standard. Only one problem so far(replaced control arm). Reliability exceeded my expectations. Love the car and its performance and handling. Can't find better used V6 4 dr sedan with stick shift for the money (Audi, BMW or VW cost at least twice as much). Downside, dashboard fake wood is too cheap, worn leather on the steering wheel, fake handbrake boot leather and the way the engine stalls at revs when shifting. Interesting enough, in Europe Ford Mondeo(same as Contour/Mystique) was always rated way ahead of Accords and Camrys in any way.

I purchased my mystique with 17000 mi. it nows has 42000 mi. i like the handling and the smoothness of the engine. the seats are comfortable. THE WORST THING ABOUT OWNING THE CAR IS HAVING TO TAKE IT TO A FORD OR MERCURY DEALERSHIP. I HAD SPRING GUARDS INSTALLED ON THE FRONT STRUT (AS PART OF A RECALL) AND HAD TO RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY MADE A LOUD NOISE WHEN I DROVE OVER SPEED BUMPS. IT TOOK 8 VISIT AND THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO FINALLY FIX THE A/C WATER LEAK I HAD INSIDE THE CAR.

Nothing can compare!!

I have the 2.5L 6 cyl fully loaded. This car is fun to drive, handles well and has always been reliable. I was going to sell it this year (it only has 21000M) but I can't find a new car I like better (including the new Jag., Volvo, Beetle, Cougar). It is well worth holding on to especially since they quit making them - what a shame!

I am a new owner of a (used, obviously) 1998 Mercury Mystique LS... and though I've only had it for a short time I have fallen madly in love with it. It's sporty enough for my friends to envy and sensible and luxurious enough for my grandparents to want to purchase one of their own. I love the fact that it has a V6 engine in it, and it is one of the most comfortable cars I've ever driven in. I would definitely recommmend it to anyone looking to buy a used car.

Bought this Mystique LS used. At that time it only had 17K miles, was still under warranty, and was loaded with every option except the moonroof. I now have 40K miles on the car and I am very pleased. The purchase price was $10,300 and I really doubt I could of found much more car for the money.

The 1998 Mercury Mystique LS has been a joy to drive. It has good power from the 2.5L 24 valve V6 Duratec engine. Handling is nimble & agile, cornering very well. The interior design is pleasant in appearance. The front seats are comfortable, well proportioned & provide good support. The major drawback is the lack of room in the rear seating area. While the Mystique has room for four adults, the fit is tight. This car is best suited for the individual, couple, or small family with young children. P.S. An interesting fact: While the Mystique is no longer available as a Mercury, it is still available. It is the basis for the new (2000+) Jaguar S-Type compact sedan.

This is a nice car, but not exciting. My particular Mystique has a 4 cyl. engine, and I wish it had a six. It has been very dependable, still runs quiet. Fit and finish has held up very well. All in all, a nice family car for small kids, but not exciting.
