Have this car for the past 14years. Very much love my car because how reliable it is for me to get around. Usually the car don't have any major issue except for the normal wear and tear (e.g break pad, rotors, head light, minor oil leak). What I love about this car is that is made in the USA, except for the engine, which means that when they have to make any repairs it won't cost me an arm or a leg for the parts. Most expensive repairs I have to make was to put a new AC after the car reaches age 10. Unfortunately, my car has reach its limit and the cost to repair the car is not worth the value of the car. I will say this car was worth what I paid for and I will buy another Mercedes again.

I just bought a used 1998 ML 320. What a gem!!!! Plenty of power/torque, good acceleration, and an AWD system that handles itself great in the snow. Everything works, leather is in perfect condition, Bose stereo is fantastic, everything is what you would expect from a Mercedes Benz. Previous owner was a Mercedes Technician, so the vehicle was very well maintained. His wife hit a deer, and he didn't feel like making necessary repairs. So I got lucky, being a co-worker of his, he basically gave me the car for 2K and i had to repair the vehicle myself. A fender, hood, & bumper later, and I'm four wheelin' in the snow!!! You would never know this thing is 15 years old with 200k miles on it!!!!!!

My suv has always been reliable I've had it now for 12 years, the biggest problem has been the window switches that have been replaced twice for $300. Every other repair has outlasted the manufactuers recomendations. I suggest finding a good German repair faculty, repairs are on the exspensive side at the dealer. I've gotten good gas mpg average 20.

Reliable SUV, driven hard for 150k miles. Great in snow, mud and rough roads. 22 mpg at 75 mph. Low range has come in handy several times. Some maintenance issues with electronics, suspension and engine mounts.

Never buy first year of new model. The main problems are only 8 keys allowed to be made. I had 6 keys replaced first year by Mercedes who never told me that once you hit 8 keys the whole locking system must be replaced for $4500. Should have been a recall. I sued in small claims court and won. Windows switch bad in all of them. I have replaced 4 times they only last 3 months. Should have been recall. They knew these problems all along but it was cheaper for them if people sue then do a recall.

I have to agree with most of the reviewers. This is one bad MB. I've owned 3 MB but this is worst of all! From the day I've picked-up this car, I've had so many problems for next about 5-6 years. I've made so many trips to dealers. Luckly, many of the problems were fixed under warrenty. Many times, dealers would fix additional items without telling me though. Real poor build quality. However, I have to tell you that after all those repairs (all done at the dealership), my car has been "Finally" running real nice. I now have 175K miles and really runs very nice. I think it was after about 90K miles this car runs nice. I still would not recommend any one to buy any Mercedes models!

It's been a good car.

We bought the car used with 64,000 miles on it. It's been a very good car, fairly reliable, but routine maintenance at the dealer has been expensive. Good gas mileage for it's size, good cargo area for my needs. Now has 112,000 miles and motor still great. Never left me stranded, but my clock stopped working last year and instrument panel would have to replaced at a cost of $1,000, so not doing that. Comfortable for me, but not my husband who is tall... he doesn't have near enough leg room, and even getting into the vehicle is a tight fit for him. It needs about another 6-8" of leg room for people over 6 ft. Back window wiper is loud. I still have the original radio which is pretty useless.

Living in the heart of the Colorado Rockies I am surprised at how my ML320 performed in unforseen conditions on back forest roads, however I wish at times it had a bit better off-road capabilities (ML has the same clearance as LR Disco). My driver window regulator too went bad, a $200 repair. Also the check engine light has came on, if you get your codes read and it says fuel trim malfunction, there is a 95% chance your Mass Airflow Sensor needs replaced (located on the air intake hose just after the filter going to the motor)This will cost anywhere from $180-300 depending on where you get your parts but is an easy DIY when you have the part. Good overall SUV if you can afford well mantaince

When I bought it back in 1998, the ML was the king of the SUV hill. So hot it was, I waited for 6 months for delivery. After almost 8 years and 140K miles of service, it's time for a replacement (mind you the truck is still going strong). The SUV landscape has definitely changed. A lot of new contenders, but no clear winner. You don't see a waiting list for any one of them. The whole SUV class seems to have softened. Where are the low range gears and the body on frame? My little ML has pulled many monster Suburbans out of the mud... in soccer field parking lots! After much searching, I've decided to buy another ML. A 2005 version, not the new 2006, as it's lost the true SUV spirit.

My 1998 ML320 has 67K miles and it is the worst car I ever had. The car had multiple repairs on windshield/sunroof motors, various sensors and transmission parts. But worst of all is the security system. For the last 7 years, keys had to be changed 6 times ($105- 150 a piece)due to a faulty chip. They also had to be changed every time the battery would be gone. I was stuck several times, and had to interrupt a trip and be towed. Once you reach a total of 8 keys, you have to change locks and computer parts (approx $5500). When tried to complain to MB, they have a standard answer- keys are not covered by warranty and there is nothing we can do. Dealing with MB service is very frustrating experience

It is not an extreme off road machine, or a full time all wheel drive hot rod. It is a tall minivan; so don’t expect a smooth ride like any MB sedan. Gas mileage is in the mid 20s, which is not bad for such a heavy car. The poor off road capability is due to the OEM tires. Once I replaced the stock 255x65x16 with a set of off road tires, my ML will go most places just like other mid size 4X4. MB needs to cut corners in materials to keep the sticker low. My only complaints are the doors. MB must have sub contracted the door design to Chrysler. ML door does not shut like German automobile at all. Driving lights could use some improvement. I added a set of driving lights to aid visibility.

I was expecting a lot more from a Mercedes. This has to be one of the poorest performing cars in its class. The handling is poor and vague, the accelerator is vague, and the brakes are vague! This car has vague written all over it. What is it really for? Mercedes made a stab at the SUV market and, in my opinion, failed miserably. The one thing that they do well with this vehicle is having Mercedez Benz luxury. It's great to be driven in thiscar but it's horrible when it comes to driving it. It gives me no confidence,no power, and no feel.

I love this car BUT I had electrical issues at 60K miles which lead to an $800 fix. Dealership told me the underside of the car was wet too frequently, but no off road usage and was garaged when not driven. Also have had to replace the driver's window switch 4 times - opened 4 times a day every day for tolls, but my Honda did fine with the same drive.

Purhased my ML after experience with 2 previous MercBenz. I was immediately disappointed just weeks after purchase, when the first vibrational noise (rattle) develop. Took it back to dealer who tried but could not fix. Six months later, the drivers window switch stopped working. Approx. 9 months later, a selinoid in the tranny had to be replaced. Then, the crank pully let go, damaging the oil pan and other parts of the engine...BOTTOM LINE- about $5500 and dozens of trips to the repair shops, I have had enough.

NOTE, I WONDER WHY THERE IS NO US MODEL ML WITH THE FOREVER RUNNING INLINE 6 DIESEL ENGINE.?? this would truly be a vehicle to own. So far so good after 20,000 miles. I leased the ML used with 46,000 miles included a 2 year Starmark warranty. The rate was so low I could not pass it up. I have only had it in once to correct the rear tailgate lock. I live 65 miles from the dealer so I buy my own filter and get the oil changed at Walmart with Mobil 1 for under $50. My thought is only use the dealer if you have to. I have the same complaints with the quirky layout of the cup holders and window switches. Overall it has been a pleasure to own and drive. Would consider getting another if the deal was right.

I haven't had this car very long (just got it used), but I can tell you that so far everything's perfect and I LOVE driving it -- it's beautiful, not too big and not too small, rugged yet smooth, and just feels much more solid than all of the other mini-SUV's I test drove. I think that even if it costs a bit more than average to service it eventually, it'll be worth it! (My husband may have a different opinion.) :)

I just bought this a few weeks with 96,000 miles on it. It drives just like a new car, the brakes are more responsive than most sedans. Which is amazing considering its over two tons. The interior build is not quite up to par though, when the bass from the boss system hits the interior rattles, and wind noise is excessive on the doors. On the highway it has a smooth ride and a great passing gear.

First year or 2 had very few minor, but annoying problems -- glove box wouldn't close properly (still does not) and loose knob for adjusting the driver's seat back. Then fuel pump broke in 3rd year at 24,000 miles. Defective dealer workmanship resulted in 2nd fuel pump replacement less than a year later. At 31,000 miles and 4 1/2 years (after warranty expired) the fuel tank started leaking and needed to be replaced ($1,500.00). What do the commercials say about Mercedes' quality engineering???? Give me a Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, or a Lexus RX- 300 instead.

This vehicle is great with the exception of subpar reliability. I bought it new after being on a list for a while, instead of an Expedition (~ same price). I can't think of an SUV currently on sale that I would rather own. It drives wonderfully, has an exceptionally smooth and quick shifting transmission, returns 18-24 mpg in varying conditions...Interior is very spacious and it tows a 4000 lb. boat without breaking a sweat while getting 16 or 17 mpg in the process!! The closest M-B dealership is fantastic.

Even with all the bad press and reliability problems my wife and I decided to purchase the truck. It's been relatively trouble free, and reliable. Yes, there are some squeeks and rattles, but they're minor. What repairs we did have we're costly, but it's a Mercedes. To quote a mechanic that worked on the car... "You're better off with the devil you know then the devil you don't!" We'll keep it for a while longer. (We do like the Highlander though!)

Drives wonderfully, but in 1 year we've replaced the wiper motors twice, had the driver window fail, the electrical system short out and had a rupture to the power steering fluid hose. Starmark doesn't cover much of anything and the service department is second class compared to BMW, Audi & Acura.

Excellent vehicle.

Traveling in my ML 320 at 65 mph over a rough stretch of freeway is a very bumpy experience. The bumpy ride makes the entire back end of my ML 320 rattle and shake. This effect is unnerving at times. On smooth road surfaces, my ML 320 is a very nice riding SUV. Would I buy another ML 320? Probably not.

I bought my '98 ML320 in July 2000 for $26,000, and since then I've had nothing short of an outstanding vehicle. I've had no problems at all with it. The engine is very reponsive and powerful, and the 5-speed driver- adaptive automatic transmission shifts beautifully. The Starmark service is great. There've been no problems with any electrical systems or switches, transmission, engine, or controls like others have claimed. It'll treat you good if you do the same. Take care of it and it'll last you a long time.

I bought the vehicle used with 30K miles. I've had it for 3 years and its been in the shop 16 times. Everything has been replaced on it. Oil changes average $100, brakes are good for about 30K miles and cost $400 to replace ($800 for front and back). VERY HIGH maintenace costs. It rides a little rough for my tast. Gas milage is good but your paying $.20 per gallon more for premium so that cancels out the good gas milage.

I can`t believe how this car/truck handles. You can "jam" a tight turn, and it stays with you. No lean at all. I`m getting 20 miles per gallon, or better. It has lots of power!!! I`ve taken it off road several times. It is as sure footed as my Bronco was. I am "blown away" by its performance in every catagory. I`ve been a professional Teamster for over 30YRs. When this vehicle came out, I was intrigued by its unique skin and the cache of the three pointed star. After being on a waiting list for almost a month, I bought the dealer's demo vehicle for a reasonable price. The car performed well except for an annoying driveline rattle. I took it to the dealer, but they could not fix it. Annoyed and late for a meeting, I merged onto the interstate only to find that the car would not shift out of second gear. IT NEEDED A NEW transmission with less than 10000 miles, this was unacceptable. I traded it for an RX300 and have had no problems.

A few minor annoying problems for first 3 yrs (23000 miles)-- glove box, front seat adjustment handle, etc. Fuel pump failed in 3rd year. Faulty work on fuel pump resulted in a second replacement in the 4th year (28000 miles). The 4 year warranty is definitely valuable.

my truck handles like a sports car, and runs like the wind. however i who am notoriously light on the brakes go through a set of disc and rotors every 22000 miles. the dealership used regular oil instead of synthetic in the a and b services and it uses a good bit of oil. i have replaced the electrical controls for the windows every year. and the a and b services have increased in price from 79.00 for a and 179.00 for b. to 179.00 for a and up to 500.00 for b. i have noticed that the trade in value of this model hasn't held up as i thought it would for a suv that consumer reports rated as the best.

This was my first MB and it won't be my last, but this 98 ML has tested me. The engine is flawless, as well as, the ride and handling (better than most cars). But, the minor things kill the excitement - electrical components: dash, windows, wipers. However, my service department is professional and courteous... always willing to help. Plus, the Starmark warranty is the best.

The most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned has been my 1998 ML-320. This truck has had numerous problems with the electrical system and the engine. The engine was replaced with a new one in January 2002. From December 1999 to January 2002, this truck was in the "shop" about 15 times for various problems. MB North America paid for the new engine, as the manufacturer's warranty had just expired. Lucky for me, as I would have never had the means or desire to purchase a new engine for this truck. The best that I can say about this truck is that it hasn't returned for repairs since the new engine was installed.

I'll keep it...

I've had very few problems with this car and the ones I've had have been minor. The drive is smooth and quiet as expected. Visibility and every day drivability are very good. The A/C is powerful to take the Texas heat. It's off-road attributes surpass any other. My only complaint is the plastic along the driver side seat. The seat bolster rests on this panel and is easy to break where it screws into the seat frame. The dealer wants way too much to replace it (over $600). I'll have to come up with a homemade alternative. Over all, I'm very pleased with the vehicle and impressed that I can maintain it for about $600 a year. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

During the first two years this ML was in the shop 13(not a good #) times. The next two years were flawless except for routine service. I can purchase the ML for $24,000, but I am worried about long term reliability. Considering a Toyota Highlander or a Chevy Trailblazer to replace the ML. How has everyones ML been after the first two years?

After waiting a year to receive my ML I was thrilled to pick it up. The handling in bad road conditions is exceptional. The handling and ride are all I hoped for. Build quality is horrific. The original paint chipped in over 200 places on the hood, MB repainted the front end under warranty. Electrical problems persist. The trip computer has gone out, my wipers no longer work, the clock works intermittently. MB wants $145 to look at the wipers - no repair. The arrogance of the dealership is incredible as they make me wait 11 days to schedule an oil change.

The 1998 ML320 was a ground-breaking vehicle when it was first introduced and I had to have one. The early production models did have a few minor annoyances(transfer case, various squeeks and rattles) but reliability was never a concern. Overall this is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a rugged yet elegant SUV.
