i've owned the car for 2 years, bought it at 200,000km and drove it till 280,000km. as with all cars with high mileage, you must look at what the previous owners did for maintence. in the case of my prelude, EVERYTHING started to break down from leaking raditors to starter problems. My cost of ownership was high, BEWARE its hard to find a prelude that is in good condition.

Great car!

I bought my 1998 Prelude Base Coupe 4sp. manumatic with 74K miles on it in 2006 as my first car. LOVED it! It was the best car I ever owned. In the year that I had it, I only replaced the O2 sensor. Not bad. The reason I had to get rid of it? It cost me too much to keep it. I was only 17, not making much money and couldn't afford the low profile tires (stock wheels, mind you), the premium fuel and, of course, the insurance company ate me alive. I didn't do my homework before I bought it. So, if you can afford the cost of ownership, this will be a great car.

I bought this car with 256000km's (159000 miles) on the car and finally bought a new car. It currently has 320000 kms (199000 miles). I'll be honest, Ive never driven a brand new Prelude, but from what I can see, considering the milage was high, it still booted, vtec'd, and sound like a fast sportscar. from 256000 to 320000 kms, i only worried about oil changes and gas. i had a couple of small things that had to be changed - fan belt, rotors, and exhaust. These are all 'maintenance' issues. This car is a soldier, and I abused the hell out of the car, and it just wont die. It is rusty as hell, and so now that I bought my new car, my prelude satisfies the carefree in me.

I own the tiptronic model, standard 2.2L, no fancy wancy vtec. Overall the Prelude is a beautiful car, thankfully the previous owners kept up the servicing and didn't thrash the living daylights out of it. My model is completely stock, straight out of the box, and I am very impressed. Tiptronic is great, you have the choice of just cruising around town in auto mode, or slapping the stick over to the side and drive it like a manual, changing gears without lifting the throttle - an added bonus. Great for open road cruising (Auckland to Cape Reinga and back (done 950+KM in two days) Excellent car. No nonsense. Safe. Reliable. End of story. Buy it!

I bought my 1998 Base model Honda prelude about 3 months ago for 7,000 dollars at a used car dealership with 104k miles. When I bought it, it had a few aftermarket features such as DC sport headers, apexi n1 exhaust and lowering springs. I was looking for a good car to buy all around and the prelude fit my description perfectly, decent price range, good gas mileage, speedy car and reliable. The car is pretty quick my kill list includes Mitsubishi 3000GT, Every truck that has ever raced me, Audi TT turbo'd and any v6 mustang. The only problem I have had is the vinyl plastic under the windows both dried up and crusted off (common problem which is a pretty easy fix) and maybe cheap paint?

I bought my Prelude with around 124000 miles and in close to half a year it now has 133000 on it. Honda did a great job with this car, it looks good has good performance, good fuel economy and it's reliable. I had a timing belt put on it right after I got the car because I knew it was going to be driven hard. It has a lot of miles on it now and I can tell she is getting tired. It burns a quart of oil every 2500 miles but the H series engines are known to burn oil from the factory so I check it often and don't have any problems. I gave tortured the thing hitting vtec constantly, speed shifts, speeds above 120 mph and hard braking and turns. It can take abuse. I love my Prelude!

I'll start with the performance. The stock hp/torque is pretty good, allowing speeds of 140 easily. The clutch and tranny work as if god created them himself. Having blown a motor already, I suggest lowering your VTEC settings. VTEC engages using oil pressures, so the higher the setting, the quicker you burn oil, and possibly running dry too quick. Sure you'll lose some hp, but you'll gain fuel economy. So overall it's an amazing car, but if using aftermarket parts, I suggest letting Honda dealerships and legit Hondadata operators tune and maintain you're car.

Pros: the car has great handling on those tight turns. The sound system is great for stock. The pick up is amazing. The fuel economy works great with my driving time. I love how you can change from auto to manual. It might seem small but I'm 6,5" and I have plenty of room, and the girls love it. Cons: the back seats are small, so it sucks for my friends. The trunk space is small. The rear view mirrors have a big blind spot.

I bought my Prelude used at about 58K miles. Took her in recently for 105K service and still going strong. While the ride can be stiff, you get excellent road feel. The rougher ride dosent seem to matter on long trips. After driving a rental recently I really missed my precise handling and road hugging Prelude. Great long-term reliability. Fun to commute to work in or tool about town in on a lazy weekend.

Purchased the car just under a month ago, and am still impressed by the overall quality of this 'Lude. The 5th gen is by far better looking than the 4th gen. Most the editor reviews will tell you the interior and exterior are lacking on the 5th gen. I could not disagree more! If nothing else, choose the 5th gen over the 4th because the 5th comes stock with vtec. I am not impressed by gimmicky features, and this car has none of those. It is a sports car. If you want something with plenty of room, get a 4 door accord. the Prelude I own has just over 110,000 miles on it, as far as I know it has not had any major mechanical work done.

I just bought a '98 base Prelude because I was bored of the family sedan... and this car isn't boring! It's VTEC system with a relative lack of low-end torque is like having 2 cars - the first is the low revving economical commute happy at 2k, and it is equally happy up to 7k scaring the pants off you at how quickly you reached "too fast". It feels heavy to me, as if I shouldn't try throwing it around - but when I do I never get into trouble! There may be better cars than the Prelude, but I doubt many will give you this kind of fun for the same price.

You're in a front wheel drive car... You floor it at the light and make your left turn with your foot to the floor, yet there is no tire squeal and the car just pulls you through the turn with a serious growl, you steer even harder left and the back slowly starts to kick out. Is this car rear wheel drive or did Honda truly fix front wheel drive understeer. The latter. Every front wheel drive car should have ATTS! So much fun to drive!

I bought it new in 1998 and 8 years later I still love it. Fun to drive on trips and at the track. Very reliable. Have had minimal repair issues, significant considering my 25+ HPDE's. Basic suspension mods really helped the already excellent sport driving performance, and a Quaife LSD has been a good investment. Will hold 0.9+ G's in a flat turn, and can reach 150 mph without much trouble. Impresses the BMW and STI drivers and can hang with much higher rated cars in the turns. Best looking and most elegant styling of Honda ever. Ford and others have recently picked up its more notable styling elements.

This car has been the best I have ever owned (of 8). I am thinking of replacing it on the 'before'....other experiences say it should have problems now. it doesn't and hasn't. It has no major competitor IMHO...I guess because Prelude is not built anymore I have to go to Accura RXS-S. The Prelude is quick, the handling is superb, it almost goes sideways, it is a constant pleasure to drive.

I own a Prelude SH with 105k miles, it just runs amazing, in my school we have started a prelude team, we have in our school alone 5 preludes, each memeber put in alot of effort in finding one. i have to only SH out of the group, and even though i have the most milage i can take any of thier ludes, you just have to take care of them, u cant drive em like a camry, u have to have a compassionate love for the car so you will put in money and time, my weekdays are all school and work, and my weekends are all for my prelude. the ATTS SH is amazing, you will feel the difference people! over all it was my dream car and i finally got it, and people turn thier heads twice when my SH rolls by all stk

I bought my Prelude with 42K miles. Has been a problem free nice commuter car and has needed very little maintenance over the last 4 years that I have owned it. It still drives and looks great at 125K miles and should keep on going. It is the Honda engineering that makes these cars seem to outlast most others. Good performance while still very reliable few complaints overall while owning this car.

I bought this car for fun, sporty all- time transportation. It drives just as good at 98,000 miles as it did at 150. It's a perfect fit and cups your body on the smooth, lickedy-split fast turns. Rides just as comfortably at 60 mph as 130 mph and I love my manual transmission with the added bonus of the vtech growl.

I bought this car for a fun and reliable car and it was worth every penny. I recently sold it for a bigger car, but the Prelude drove as good on the last day as it did on the first. I did the basic maintainence plus some basic mods. I got 28mpg in the city .. not too many other cars with 200hp are gonna give you those numbers. BUT buyers be careful, there are alot of poorly maintained preludes out there. I've seen many prelude "street racers" (<-- oxi-moron if you ask me) completely trash their car.

I have had the most fun driving this car out of any car I've driven. it has been a plaesure to own since day one. you definatly must go for the 5-speed manual. the H22 (engine) is extremely fast for a 4-cylinder and can keep up with most anything on the road, especially with aftermarket encouragement. some say its overpriced but those probably havent expirienced revving up to 7,000rpm before shifting while flying down a road.

Only problem I had was an emissions sensor LED go off and the dealership could not find any problems. I have owned this car for over a year and a half. The seats are very comfortable, yet they still hold you still in a sharp turn. The engine is quiet when you want it to be, and when you get up into the higher RPMs the engine lets out a wonderful distinctive growl. The handling is superior compared to any car in its class, yet the car rides very smooth. I have driven this car hard everyday for over 71,000 miles without a single problem. The sound system is the best I have ever heard in a Honda... and I should know... I own 5 of them (89 CRX DX, 97 Acura Integra GSR, 02 Civic EX Cp, 89 Accord LXi, and this 98 Prelude).

The only critisism I can give is it needs about 30-40 more hp. I would buy another prelude but unfortunately honda has moved on to the s2000.

Im pretty young, so when I was looking for a car to get, the prelude was perfect. Its built rock solid, 100% reliable, has the looks, and plenty of power under the hood. Its not a full blown sports car, and it was never designed to be one. The ride is the best I've felt in a car in this price range.

Honda preludes are the only type of car I have ever known. I have driven many other cars and have owned a 87 prelude, a 88 prelude and 3 98 preludes. I had unfortunate mishaps, both acts of god, and both times the prelude did a extremely good job of keeping me safe and sound.I am extremely upset that Honda has discontinued making this fine automobile. Prelude SH, it grips on to the road like a lion hunting for its prey, but runs like a buffalo. Too heavy and not enough horse power to support its weight. I drive my prelude 7 days a week, averaging 90 miles a day, and I drive it hard. Only problem with the car, engine makes flapping sound between 1200-2300 RPM. A common problem for prelude engine. My previous 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Gs-T had better performance with less price tag. If you want great handling car, Prelude SH is the one for you.

unbeatable performance/reliability value

Want a car that doesn't look like every other 'boy racer' yet fits four, handles as well as any front wheel driver, is fast, gets decent mileage (when you're not blasting around), and is 100% reliable? There is no better choice.

Great Car

This is really a great car. Low end is somewhat lame, but past 4-5,000 it is a blast! Interior is typical Honda. (Simple and efficient.) Definately fun to drive if you like the high revving type cars.

I have had my 98 lude for a little over two years and is the funest stock sport compact I have ever owned. I put 12,000 miles on the car annually and not a single mechanical problem yet to date!!!! This car handles well with the stock suspension, fast as hell off the line -- especially if you take it to the red line. Styling is sleek and the ride is firm and comfortable Like the title says, best sport compact on the market not only because it looks great, is fast and fun to drive, but because it displays the reliability you would expect from a Honda!!

With 200 hp 156 lbs of torque, this car hauls. Its fast and ist a tiny little civic. Preludes are a collectible, not a me too car as civics and integras are. Great styling, great engine, good looks, and good stock sound system. Only 4 cyl id rather have is the $10,000 more s2000.

My 'Lude has been with me for 4 years now. 70K miles later, I still get giddy every time the tach winds past 5,200 rpm. I have added a AEM intake, stainless header, and SuperSprint Exhaust, which has added to the fun both power and sound-wise. The acceleration and handling are still there, and the car is as stylish and comfortable as ever. A true winner!

Look no further....

I've owned my 98 for a year and a half now. I've put major miles on it and STILL not a darn thing wrong with it. It's too good of a car. The low rpm power is minimal, but after 3grand (especially after 5 grand...LOOK OUT!!!) The H22A those fine engineers over at Honda put into this classy lil chassis is top notch! It is a shame that Honda was stupid and discontinued the Lude. Oh yeah....did i mention the HANDLING??? One word-MINT!

I love my car!

Vroom. Great handling in all types of weather. Even nice on long trips. The Sport-shift in the base automatic gives you the fun of a manual without all the annoyances in rush-hour traffic (no clutch!).

I have owned my Prelude since 2000 and have only minimal complaints. This is the fastest stock car in its class. It's fast off the line and handles great. The V-Tech engine adds extra excitement beyond 5000 rpm's too! If you're thinking about buying this car, you better get a stick shift.

Not to Shabby!! :)

Have used in a roadrace application. Still very durable and dependable. Good high speed stability. Great every day driver, good balnce between suspension handling and comfort.

It should have more bells and whistles for the price. This is an overpriced vehicle called "HONDA". I am glad I did not pay for this full price for I would have killed myself. Honda has gone way too far. I love my '88 more than this vechicle. Honda has to produce something close to it's price. They are taking advantage of their reputation in making quality cars.

Everything is all good....
