Purchased my 98 ranger 5 years ago and put about 50 k miles on it. I love to drive it and the truck is a pleasure to drive but it is a costly ride. The reverse linkage broke in the transmission, $2500, 4X4 locking hubs failed $600, heater fail $900, door latch fail $125, valve covers leaks $150, front wheel bearing $450. I still like the truck but!!!!!!!

This is my 6th vehicle. I owned a Ranger a few years back and had to sell it because i moved to Hawaii. When i moved back i made a dumb mistake and bought a new Hyundai only to crash it less then a year after i purchased it. Soooo i knew its time to go back to the one true truck that i know will last forever. Rangers are built to last and theyre built TOUGH. I bought this one for $3500 with 133k miles on it and i know itll last me for atleast another 160k miles easy. I will never own another vehicle. You cant go wrong with a Ford.

well actually mine is XLT RWD Automatic. I have 162,500 miles on a 1998. Had ball joints put on, 2 thermostats, 3 sepentine belts, distributor synchronizer, 3 sets of plugs and wires, air throttle control valve, , it,s been in two wrecks, replaced 3 windshields, replaced front rotors, rear drums, AC leaks tried to repair, have to recharge Freon every two years, 4 sets or tires, 3 batteries, ReplacedFuel pump(in gas tank), replaced Catalytic Converter,I average about $1000 a year in repairs on the truck. But it's still going strong after 15 years. (knock on wood) Paid $18000(new) for it in 1998. But it's worth about $30000 to me ha ha.

I bought this truck Brand New in 1998 with 3 miles on the truck. I have wrecked the truck 12 times, flipped it twice and it has over 600k miles on it and still runs strong. I have repaired the truck each time it has been wrecked. When Ford says Built TOUGH they mean it. My little ranger is Built Tough. I have an extra engine in my basement if ever needed. I would not trade , sell, or EVEN GIVE away my little ranger. I LOVE my little truck. This little truck gets GREAT gas mileage as well. The only mechanical issue I have had is replacing the Clutch. I go through clutches quickly. But overall Best truck Ford Made!!!

I bought my '98 Ranger XLT used in 2002 with 55,000 miles on it at the time. Eight years late and 100,000 miles later, I have had very few problems. I've had to replace some belts and tend to general wear and tear issues, but nothing catastrophic. I average about 19.5 miles per gallon with 80% freeway driving. I always tell people I've had great luck with my ford, but then I knock on wood for good luck. *knock knock*

Well this was my second Ranger and this one was a total piece of junk. Replaced an alternator, ball joints, A/C compressor kicks off and on every 20 seconds. Door Ajar light comes on at least every other time i drive it.Freeze plugs have rusted out, leaks oil, 15mpg for a V6?!?!? Really? The stock radio is bad.

After reading the reviews on this site, I realized that my Ranger has had just about every problem in the book. It now has 145,000 miles and a list of parts I replaced in the few years I've owned it, including fuel pump, spark plugs and coil, cam sensor, 2 alternators, and more that I can't even remember. It takes a quart of oil every 1000 miles, which is tolerable. Never had any clutch problems. Power windows work sometimes, interior light stays on when doors are closed, and "Door Ajar" light will stay on for a while. A/C pump starts randomly and squeaks. Ball joints go bad a lot. Noisiest power steering pump I've ever heard, even after replacing it with a new one. Power could be better.

I bought my Ranger from my Uncle who kept it in top shape. I have had it a little over a year now and it has 71,000 miles on it. My biggest complaint has to be the traction, this thing spins on spit. Mechanically the only issue's that I am having is the idle air control needed to be replaced $90.00, easy do it yourself though. My a/c pump engages all the time, even when the a/c and defrosters aren't on. Don't know what that issue is, never bothered me enough to have it checked out.

Bought truck new in 1998 for $10k. It has been - by far- the best vehicle I have ever owned. Extremely reliable. Power is adequate with the 5spd manual and fuel economy is never below 23 mpg and can be 28 with care. Light rear end means no traction in wet/snow. But it does great donuts in the snow!! A/C still blows cold after 11 years and my original clutch still feels fine with 180k miles. Considering what I paid, I cannot ask for anything more. Great little truck. Last of the "light weights" Its peers have grown to be bloated and thirsty - hope that does not happen to the next-gen Ranger, but it probably will

For the past 4 years I have had to put new 4 wheel drive hubs in. Not a cheap fix. Wish it had a more reliable 4x4 system. Overall a nice truck

I bought this truck used when it was about 6 months old. I got to say I really like it. While not the most comfortable or most stylish vehicle, the thing works great. I have over 135,000 miles on it and have not had a single problem besides normal wear & tear and 1 leak in the roof started last year (which I still haven't fixed - lazy me). The power is decent. I have no problem getting up to 65 mph when I get on the highway. It's not very comfortable to ride in on long trips, but hey it's a small pick up, not a Mercedes.

Have been looking for a Ford Ranger for a present for my wife as she was wanting one. Was very lucky to find a Ranger extended cab step side 4x4 Off Road package for the money and black to boot. She is absolutely thrilled with it and intends to keep it for a long time.

I bought the truck in February (2008) from a private seller -- only 65000 miles. It has 16-inch wheels, a 3.73 rear-end, 4 liter V6, and 5-speed manual. I don't drive it all the time, but in driving it back and forth to work it's been getting 22 mpg, average. I've gotten as high as 24 mpg. The drive to work is 20 miles one-way. Part is through town and part is open highway. The AC quit working after operating oddly about a month after I got the truck. I still need to have checked. The truck has good power, but I wouldn't want to tow much with it, because if feels like its geared pretty "tall". I really am satisfied with it. The bed is small, but what do you expect with a short-bed?

From what everybody says on here, they love their Ranger and theirs is reliable. Mine on the other hand is already on its third clutch and I baby this truck like no other. My idle valve control keeps messing up and i'm on my fifth one already thats starting to fail(revs when I come to a complete stop). My back window leaks when it rains, engine idles rough sometimes, suspension squeaks loudly but its probably normal for it having 140,000 miles. I'm the second owner and the previous owner (which was my good neighbor so I saw the truck first day they purchased it.) They babied it as much as I did so I must have gotten a lemon from the factory but it wasn't always like this.

I am 16 years old and this is my first car! I can not say how pleased I am with this vehicle. Performance: a 3.0 liter V6. Can move the truck but is not an engine you can dog all day long. Comfort: Seats are very comfy and have great lumbar support. Back seat is fit for cargo only but my 8 yr old brother can fit back there. Fuel economy could be better. I get 18 city/22 hwy. Fun to drive, easy to drive. Shocks could be better but it's a truck! What do you expect? Interior design looks alright but I'm going to pimp it out soon! Exterior design looks awesome. Looks way better than S10s. Build quality: built to last...built to love. Reliability: very few problems!

I bought this truck new in 1998 and put 150,000 miles on it over the first 5 years. Overall the truck has been quite reliable. The two problem areas have been the interior light staying on and multiple issues with the air conditioning. Other than that the vehicle has never left me stranded. In fact, I have a 4 cylinder/5 speed stick and have never even replaced any part of the drivetrain in cluding the clutch. The truck currently has over 175,000 miles and continues to run like new.

If you want a reasonably decent small truck for hauling stuff around, the Ranger is a good choice. If you want a passenger car, buy one of those instead of a truck. BTW, the 3 liter engine is plenty powerful enough.

The 2.5L motor provides great gas mileage and a decent amount of power when you need it. If you keep your right foot out of the firewall you can easily achieve 25+ mpg on the highway. However if you plan on using all 120hp plan on getting less than 17 in the city. But the handling of the truck is good for a truck; you can sling the rear around if needed, or stick the front for some decent corning out of a truck.

I have owed this truck for 8 years now. I have not had any major issues with the truck. My only issues with the truck are that the interior light will sometimes say on after the driver door is closed and the brakes are a little weak. Other than that, the truck has been great. I would recommend the truck to any of my friends.

I bought a 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5 liter I4 for $2400 for my first truck back in February of 07 and it was a great little truck. I had very little problems with it, I did have to replace the exhaust and the rear leaf spring shackles and mounts. I had dual exhaust put on and it sounded very nice. Not like a Honda or a weedwacker on steriods. For a four cylinder truck it was very quick, and reliable. Never broke down or any engine problems. In the winter all you need for the snow with the 2wd type is good tires and i put four 70 pound sand bags in the bed and it went through anything. I absolutly loved this truck up until the day someone t-boned me and totaled it. Awesome truck overall.

Can't say much more than the title. Have owned this truck for about two years now and the one thing that stands out is that it will go just about anywhere. Have taken it up 45 degree hills with no slippage in mud and snow and it tows my 16.5' bass boat as if it was not even there. Have experienced some of the normal, minor problems of this model but all of the info available on the web makes fixing hem a breeze.

This is my third Ranger and all were purchased used. I like the Ranger and this one has not dissapointed me. I must say the previous owners took good care of this truck, I got a bargain when I found it. My own loot at it followed by my friendly mechanic's evaluation confirmed that this rig is in top shape. I like the 4.0L V-6, it has plent of power for fairly heavy hauling and medium towing.

Besides the automatic, my Ranger has been bulletproof. I off-road as a hobby, and this truck has taken me everywhere without ever breaking a thing. The 3.0 V6 is bulletproof, and the 4x4 always works. I replaced the hubs with manual hubs to get rid of the vacuum assist, and it's been great. The truck is comfortable, and it has been on long trips with no complaints. These magazines are bought out by Japanese manufacturers, so they never have anything decent to say about American vehicles. Well, the Ranger disproves it all. A solid, well built and well priced vehicle. I will be buying another Ford Ranger for my next vehicle.

I like this truck. I am 6'6" and 250 lbs and I fit in the truck pretty well. I would like to have the size of a full size truck but with gas mileage fluctuating between $2.19 - $3.19 this is the best 4X4 to own. I get an average of 16 - 17 mpg both highway and in town combined. These trucks are reliable. The have there little glitch like door switches especially in mine which is a 4 door. I have the 3.0L V6 with the 5 speed so I think that explains the good gas mileage. I like the looks of the stepside but for practicality the regular bed is much better. It holds my 3 wheeler though.

Owned this 8 years with few problems, but I've been living with flaky stuff like mirrors adjusting only one way, radio cuts on and off, many mystery things. Good truck to drive, but Splash model has a low tow capacity. Looks good. Paint along door and rain gutter peels, discolors easily. Looking back I'm happy it has lasted this long but not happy with the little things. Hardly used the rear seats but the space in the back is useful. Shakes a bit much "sometimes". Quite mysteriously flaky. Pulls a small 2000lb boat OK.

Best way to rate this "Fixed Or Repaired Daily" truck is to list the problems: knocking-pinging on hot days going up hills, steering rack assembly (warranty), steering gear ($500), alternator ($250), instrument panel lights ($50), right side HEAD ($1,800), heater diverter valve ($75), leak through third taillight ($75), arm rest (haven't bothered to fix yet) -- all in less than 90,000 miles. Latest problem - potential bad lifter.

I purchased this truck as a prior salvage that had been repaired. I have abused this truck in every way imaginable and have had no problems other than general maintenance. I put 110000 miles on this truck in two years. Almost all of those miles were highway with the governor holding me back. I have hauled four wheelers, motorcycles, concrete, railroad timbers just anything i can fit in it. Replaced shocks at 130,000 miles, crank sensor at 150,000 miles. Replaced belt tensioner at 176,000 miles. I have rarely changed the oil on time and once went over about 11,000 miles. I have recently had front end end work done. I haven't even changed the plugs or wires and the truck still runs great.

We travel in it a lot, without any issues. I'd get another one, if they had a club cab model, but now it's Sport Trac for me. Got kids, and need more room, but can't give up the truck bed.

This truck is great! 3.0L V6 is incredibly reliable, and powerful enough for all basic tasks. Off Road package really helps when four wheeling. Front grille looks tough, just like a Ford should be. Rear hops around a little bit, could use a little more weight. 4x4 works seamlessly, but is overcomplicated, expensive to repair, and not incredibly strong. Auto tranny is alright, could be beefed up a little, but it keeps the engine in the right RPM range. Mileage is great with the 3.0, and it is an incredibly reliable little engine. Overall, Great truck!!!

This is what I actually have, but Edmunds.com doesn't have it as a choice. lol. Oh well. I have a 98 Ford Ranger XLT, 4Dr Extended Cab, 4.0L V6, Automatic Transmission. 2wd.(i wish it was 4x4). This is a great truck, and if you can get the 4.0L V6 I would DEFINITELY recommend it.This truck is extremely reliable, and I've not had nay MAJOR problems since it was bought. Just regualar Maintenance.

Great truck. Mine's only a 2WD/4cyl/5speed, but it's taken me thru 4 Colorado winters. Great for light hauling around town and helping friends move. I use 85octane gas and get an average of 25mpg. If I put 87octane, I can usually squeeze out 1-2 more mpg. I'm at about 98k miles now. No major work has been needed. Regular LOF changes, brakes every 30k, tires at 45k and 90k (prolly my fault for the tires). I replaced shocks, fuel filter and had tune-up at 92k miles. Only annoying thing was the cab light would stay on during the summer after the driver's door was shut. Ended up unplugging the cable in the door.

It seems lots of folks are looking for a good used truck, for 2nd. vehicle or as primary driver. This Ford Ranger is everything you could ever hope for. Reliable, get in and go, always. 21mpg around town, bed is big enough for most jobs, x cab is great for couple with luggage, etc. 4 cyl/5 speed is strong enough to get a ticket by end of 2nd. gear if you stay in it, floats at 65-70 in 5th.with no effort. Will tow bike trailer with Harley, no problem. Mine has over 100k miles and nothing gone bad except a tail light bulb so far. I can't imagine a better value for the $.

had some initial problems with brakes GEM and door latches..bought with 83K miles. 1. needed new drums as the originals had already been turned...fixed. 2. problems with door latches (lube) and GEM module (dome light)..fixed. basically everything the consumer reports metions...brakes and electrical If you want HP, don't consider the 3L OHV engine...buy the 4L SOHC engine up front. 4X4 is barely adequate with the 3L...(my opinion of course)..and no amount of chipping will put a shine on this turd...but 3L is ok if get-up-and- go is not an issue for you. 3L is a dependable engine though..believe me, it is dependable.

I bought the truck new in the fall of 1998. I have 150000 thousand miles on it. It has been a good truck. I have had to replace the alternator THREE times and last month had to do the front struts. Not bad for all the miles. The front seat could be a little more comfortable for a bigger guy 6 2". But you can't beat the price and gas milage.

Bought this truck new - 5 years and 60,000 miles later I have nothing to complain about. Mechanically it has been completely reliable. I am getting 21-23 mpg, which I think is very good for a V6 pickup. Interior materials and exterior paint are holding up very well. Everything still feels tight, no rattles, etc. Feels like it going to be a solid truck for a long time.

Bought this vehicle used at 65000m. It had been altered from original, have had general parts replacement as it was well used in those miles. Rides stiff like 4x4's do. Thats why I bought it. Not to mention the power and 17-20 mpg. So i get the best of both worlds. If you want a 4x4 that gets good milage, with plenty of room, handy controls, and lots of towing, hauling and take off power.... Get one!!! I will be trading this one in on a new one in a couple of years.

The engine has been reliable. The exhaust at certain speeds makes a rattling noise. The truck thinks the drivers door is always open. I had to take out the interior bulbs to drive at night. The fan switch only works on high setting. A common Ford problem. The AC compressor always seems to go on and off even if just the vent is on.

Towing package allows for an impressive amount on a trailer, No 4x8 material will fit in stepside bed and it is easy to break the fiberglass pieces back there. the 4 liter engine is a push rod design that feels weak when compared to others but does the job. I have almost always gotten 17 mi to the gallon when empty. The electric four wheel drive has been nothing but trouble as has the electric heater/air controls. Aside from this, the truck has never left me set. Rear of truck is very light. Find truck very comfortable to drive. As the past two rangers I think these are a good compromise truck rides nice.

I started out leasing this truck and by the time my lease was up, I knew that I wanted to buy it. I have taken long trips, hauled everything from refrigerators to sheetrock and have never had to do anything to this truck except change the oil and put in gas. It is a great looking truck and is very comfortable. I now have 113,000 miles on it and I drive it 100 miles a day to work and back. I would highly recommend this truck to anyone who is looking for a small, good looking, economical and trouble free vehicle.

I have primarily riven Ford products for the last 34-plus years (25 total vehicles). I am increasingly disappointed in the crap Ford provides. I rebuilt the ac twice before 40k miles. The 5-speed auto tranny slips in low gear, the intermittent wipers work when they want to and it won't stay in 4 wheel drive mode. This vehicle is 5 years old and has less than 50k miles, has never been abused and I am a self- admitted maintenance nut. On top of all of this, throw in those wonderful self- destructive Firestone Wilderness AT tires (for which I never received the promised reimbursment from Ford) and you know why I currently drive a Nissan!

I am overall pleased with my truck. The 2.5L four cylinder is a dog and lacks sufficient power that you want in a truck, but that's the trade off for a 25MPG truck. The interior is friendly and quiet, although some of the materials are cheap. My only real complaint is that the rear end is far too light and the suspension "jumps" on rough roads and tends to feel that I am loosing control of the truck. The rims also require a special wheel balancer due to desing flaws.

This is a great truck. Very capable off- road in mud & trails. Truck is also a lifesaver, I fell asleep and rolled my Ranger end over end & sideways 5 or 6 times. There is no practical reason that I shouldn't have been hurt. The truck withstood damage very well. Although it was obviously totaled, I walked away unharmed other than some cuts. Roof didn't cave far & airbags/seatbelt combined with highback seats saved my life. Truck was very rigid & although I now have an Explorer, Ford has earned my loyalty for life. I had little problems with my Ranger, but nothing warranty didn't cover. I feel these trucks will last many years.

I bought a used 98 Ford Ranger XLT, extended cab, 4W drive, with about 40000 miles on the odometer. The Ranger was in excellent condition. I had skid plates and a wrap around grill guard installed for I do a lot of off-road driving hunting deer, upland game birds, dove and duck. I am careful not to abuse my truck but we do get off into some rough country. Highway driving is a pleasure.

First purchase, couldn't afford anything down but 48 monthly payments okay at 0.9 APR. 36K warranty fixed an exhuast problem at 3k since then no complaints and has been a reliable commuter vehicle with the occasional camping trip or help someone move (all truck owners know what I'm talking about...) Owns the mountains wiht chains ... can't complain! Small 2.5L engine gets the job done and the 25 MPG ain't bad.

I bought my 98 Ranger in 2000 with just under 27,000 miles on it. So far we haven't had many problems with it. The door ajar sensor on the drivers side had to be replaced but that was due to poor installment of an aftermarket alarm. When I got it, it had the wrong taillights on it (i should have inspected it more throughly) and the turn signals weren't even hooked up! So I immediately returned it and they replaced them right away. Had to replace the serpentine belt at 30,000 miles which seems a tad early. I used it to haul my Harley to Connecticut and back and it ran flawless. Thumbs up!

We bought the truck used from a local dealer, it only had 24,000 miles on it when we purchased it. Since about a week after we bought it we have had problems with the idle, it idles very high when you put in the clutch. I can't even remember how many times it was in the shop, and it still is not fixed. We are currently having problems with the electrical (dome lights staying on), and the newest problem with it is the brake lights don't work. I'm looking to get rid of it, and I won't be buying another.
