My 1998 Explorer Made it to 268,000 Miles

I bought My 1998 Eddie Bauer Edition Ford Explorer used back in 2001 at about 58,000 miles overall I have loved my car, but then it was my first car :) .It stood up to 16 years of constantly hauling heavy DJ equipment and speakers to all my DJ gigs and performances over the years, even constant driving up and down the mountains of Colorado. Over it's long life It has had a few problems like the Multifunction switch going out twice (controls your Cruise control, turn signals and wipers etc) however I did have to rebuild my engine at about 170,000 miles after constantly driving up into the high altitude mountains of Denver Colorado while hailung DJ equipment. I did start running in to an issue with car alarm system in the last 2 years randomly going off, I believe due to a malfunctioning door so had to stop locking my doors when I didn't have anything of value in the car. Finally at 268,000 miles this week my Transmission Reverse just went out so it's probably time to let the car go as a repair will cost between 1800 and 3800 depending on who does it and if they also decide to do the front differential which has issues now as well. Still drives forward perfectly so I guess I just gotta be a forward thinking person LOL and never go back. The car has been pretty reliable overall and has lasted me years it's kind of sad that it's time to part ways but it has served me well over the years and the cargo space has been great for all my DJ equipment. Personally I kind of want to buy a newer model Ford Explorer, but I have a wife that really doesn't want me to buy another one :( LOL so the debate goes on as we research reliable SUV cars... (which is how I came to find this in the first place) LOL - [HTML removed]

This SUV I got as a baby shower gift. I have owned it since Febrary of 2014 right before I had my daughter. It has never left us stranded anywhere. This SUV is like a tank seriously! The only thing we had to do with it was get the transmission rebuilt which cited us $1,975.00 but it was worth it. I plan on getting it fully restored when I get my settlement. Maintenance is easy , we have always kept up with oil changes etc. the original owner that bought it brand new always got all of its maintenance done at the ford dealer she got it at! It was all written down in the maintenance schedule book with the owners manual she kept. The original owner also kept the factory window sticker in the owners manual! Neat! My explorer costed $42,000 new! Wow back in 1998!

Comfy SUV!

I bought my Explorer "used" in '99, with only 1300 miles on it. I truly lucked out! I bought it to pull my new Danish horse trailer (Brenderup) and as my commuting vehicle, which is why my wonderful Red Pig now has about 264K miles on it. ["Red Pig"? so named the first time I filled it up, having traded in a '96 Honda Civic coupe in the transaction]. It was my commuting vehicle as well as my trailer-puller until 6 years ago. Before the Pig was semi-retired, I was putting a good 22K miles on it per year; after, less than 3000 I am only now thinking it's time to find a successor for my beloved Pig. Very reluctantly, because I don't think anything made more recently will measure up

I bought my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT brand new from the dealer, and it gave me many good years. About 3 years ago, though, it began giving me issues. I ended up consistently putting money into it nearly every month. Honestly, the body began to go before the engine did... but once the little things started going wrong, it added up very quickly. The last thing to happen was a cracked thermostat housing, once I fixed that, I sold the truck. I really loved my Explorer, would recommend one, and bought a new one after selling my 1998. It did have awful gas mileage, my 2009 gets better mileage than my 1998 ever did.

A great little truck.

The option for my model was not above. I drive a 1998 XLT 4x4 w/auto transmission. I bought the car for $3,000. with 146,000 miles on it two years ago as my first car. It is still running strong to this day. It has had it's usual maintenance, that is a given for any car of this age. Sure, it has it's quirks, but regardless, this is a great little truck that will never fail you.

Bought at 120k now has 184k had to replace transmission, exhaust/muffler and many other parts that my boyfriend handled -can't recall what all of them were. Drives nice with new tranny. Problems: Radio screen broken- annoying to be unable to view radio station numbers, cd, etc. back window wiper does not touch window but it can swipe. Front driver power lock broke: repaired but still has trouble unlocking, leather interior rips easily with normal wear and tear (no pets.)Back bumper is bent downward for some reason. When parked on a slight incline facing downhill cannot get enough gasoline to engine to start the vehicle unless over quarter tank full. Very VERY VERY annoying!

I bought my explorer brand new when my 2nd son was born and still have it today! My son is now 13 yrs old. I feel safe sitting up high. It has never left me sitting. I have four wheel drive but hardly ever have to use it. I have a hill to go up to get out of my neighborhood. When it snows, most vehicles can not get over that hill but my explorer goes right up the snow covered hill. I will buy another Explorer when I'm ready for another vehicle.

I have owned my Explorer for nearly 10 years. I bought it used and have virtually put very little money into it except for usual wear and tear. This is a great family vehicle it is great when you need to carry large loads. This is a vehicle I will recommend to anyone. If you keep up with regular maintenance you will have a great vehicle for years to come. Snow is no match for this truck nothing stands in it's way. I am giving it to my nephew so that he will have a vehicle he can rely on while he is just starting out and I am sure it will last him until he gets on his feet just as it has for me and my family.

I bought my Explorer new in 1998. It's 12 years old now and still going strong. It has never broken down or even overheated. I drove this car all over Europe when I was assigned overseas. I have to admit I'm on the forgetful side when it comes to maintenance and oil changes although I did take it the dealer a couple of times for routine fluid changes and checks. The car chassis does groan and creak sometimes now but almost everything still works. The AC is still ice cold even though I've never had it serviced that i can recall. I've never had to replace as much as a fuel pump. I love this car and won't get a new one until this one dies.

I drove this truck for 7 months with NO problem..purchased it with 125k miles, it was so convenient, and wasn't that bad on gas even though when i bought it the truck hadn't been taken care of, with an oil change, and tune up ran like a dream, got around in our bad winter here with no problem at all, I had to sell it due to financial situation, and SO badly miss it, am actually looking for another one, this was the first one I'd ever owned but am now an Explorer fan, my sister has one the same year, with 226k miles and never hesitates to drive it all over the country. AWESOME truck!

I will keep this short. I have owned this vehicle since 1999 with about 20K miles on it. It now has 225K miles on it. Other than common perishable parts like tires and brakes, I have had to replace the 02 sensor, the alternator, the exhaust (because it rusted through the cats), and the gas filler fuel neck (because I broke it getting too rough with the gas hose). Most all of these went near the 200K mile mark. That is IT. You wanna talk about a reliable vehicle worth the money? I either got a really good one, or Ford built these right.

I bought the XLT on Nov 2007, it now has over 200,000 miles and still rides great, purchased in California and imported into Mexico, no major mechanical problems, in fact I just replaced the gas pump, it still had the original manufactured in 1997. Minor problems with the locks and one repair to the cooling system, other than that just the regular maintenance, around 320 miles per gas tank and engine is really strong, no problems with cold or hot weather. People where I live stops me and ask me if I sell it cause it stills looks really. I have the XLT 4 door and changed the gauges to the white ones from the sport myself. I love my truck !

Used as a daily driver. It is a great vehicle and has done everything iv wanted it to do. Iv only had to put new brakes, roters ect. on it, as you would any vehicle.

I bought this car from the original owner 5.5 years ago when it already had 98000 miles on it. It is now at 238,000 and has never had any major problems. The only time it left me stranded was when the battery was long overdue to be replaced. We plan on replacing it soon with a newer model of the same thing. Can't say enough good things about this truck, it has been a great family car, reliable, fantastic in the snow and off road, and very forgiving of our lax maintenance of it. Hoping to upgrade with a new one with third row seats. Love this car!

I was always a Honda Toyota guy. Then I bought the explorer and has been very reliable. Just maintanence, and I believe that is the key with any car. Some people get angry if their ball joints or suspension parts fail but you have to consider they are a part of regular maintanence. In the past I bought a couple Honda's that had everything wrong with them a week after the purchase simply because of lack of maintanence. So from now on I only buy cars with maintanence reports. Which makes sense if someone goes to the trouble of keeping all those records they must have taken good care of the vehicle. Most of the time those are the vehicles with Nice and clean interiors.

Bought my explorer new and now have about 120k miles on it. It has had its share of maintenance issues (radio display, back windshield wiper, fuel pumpx2, belts, sensors, minor suspension issues, etc) but overall it has been pretty reliable. I perform scheduled maintenance regularly and don't worry about random breakdowns or taking on long trips. Both the interior and the exterior have held up well and (IMHO) still look good. Overall, the value of the car to me far exceeds its blue book price.

I'm the original owner and primary driver-it's been flawless other than a new A/C in 2003 ($750). Live in FL, but have driven it often to/from/in NC mountains and it was great w/the manual transmission, made it tons o' fun. Decent mileage for an SUV (22/19 mpg). Oil is changed every 3,000 mi. Had 3 sets of tires-Goodrich lasts longest-Goodyear the least and the most flats (too soft). Replaced one out of round wheel ($450) under warranty. Minor leaks in back fixed windows. No rollovers (driver error in my opinion & I'm a woman). Exterior finish and wheels are still shiny (we wax). Bought vinyl liner for cargo area and excellent mats--a great investment. My previous vehicle? Manual'88 BroncoII

I have had my Explorer for over 3 years with no major issues. Failed its last MOT on rotten rear hangers, a ball joint and a hole in the exhaust. Not bad for a vehicle that now spends half its life on the beach and in the sea!! Reasonably comfortable but extremely practical. There is no other vehicle (maybe the Toyota Landcruiser) that can match its size for such little money. 20-22 mpg is easily achievable which is just as good as most 4x4 diesels. Pulls like David Beckham at an all girls school. Very solid and very reliable.

I have owned my explorer for 2 years now and have not had to deal with any major problems. I did learn the hard way that the o-ring from the oil filter can occasionally get stuck and has to be peeled off. In the last 2 years I have managed to put on nearly 40K miles, between driving to and from school (about 150miles round trip)and pizza delivery. Slightly bothered by the less that stellar gas mileage, but on the highway I have gotten 20+ mpg a few times. Strongly recommend to anyone needs a decent amount of space in their car. Also, after surviving through 2 winters, I have no complaints, snow is not an issue. This car can easily modified without affecting its electrical system

The Eddie Bauer AWD Explorer is a reliable car if properly maintained. I have never had problems with the drive train or engine (88,000 miles). It gets an honest 18.7 mpg at 55-65mph and the car is over 10 years old. My major maintenance was replacing rusted brake lines and rear brakes when they failed from corrosion. I'm big so I find it very comfortable, especially the leather bucket seats as do passengers in the back seats. The A/C is used a lot in the South and it works great. Change the oil every 5000 miles and change the transmission oil every 50,000 miles. Flush the radiator out when you change the transmission oil and it will last a long time. Built Ford tough.

It has gotten me everywhere I go & the AC blows really cold now. I really like all the features it has. I just wish it had a better MPG. Only other problem is the keyless entry sometimes works & sometimes doesn't. Great Car!

I have owned Fords all of my life. This was our first and only SUV purchase. We bought it new and have only had to make routine maintenance repairs mostly. I did recently repair the door latch on the driver's side, but other than that it has been batteries, tires, brakes, and so far no tune-up. I will complain about two items: the stereo display and the rough ride. The display on the stereo went out right after the warranty ended and I know this has happened on many other fords. The ride is very rough, but maybe I just need to break down a buy new shocks. We have owned a Honda and a Saturn, both of which lost their transmissions at 80K miles, so I feel the explorer was a good choice for us.

What else could go wrong?

From 2002 on up. The radiator blew up at least three times a year and the transmission went out at least once a year. The engine blew once and the battery melted once. There were check engine lights left and right. The dash went out a few times taking the headlights with it. The doors kept sticking and wouldn't open from the inside until the handles finally broke off. A few doors wouldn't open at all. I just kept fixing it all and kept saying I loved the car, now I admit I spent way too much just trying to keep it running. I spent 13,000 just buying the car, and I spent 8,000 or more just to keep it running. NOT WORTH IT!!!

Bought this from a credit union (repo) and have been having fun. Have done a lot of maintenance that you would expect at 125,000 miles. Shocks, water pump, tires, ball joints, etc. Now that it has what it needed, I would drive it cross country with no hesitation. It's good for it's age. Awesome in snow!

It's almost a year later since my last review. I have a true love hate realtionship with this car. I love its reliability but hate driving a ten year old car. Overall, I've gotten my money's worth out of it. I now have almost 170,000 miles on it and this year have only had to buy tires and an altenator besides the regular matinence of course. I drive about 40 miles to and from work M-F. Everything's working on the car right now and has all year. It still starts without applying gas and can keep up in the fast lane. Plan to keep it until the wheels roll off (I'd feel wasteful buying one if not necessary). At this rate I'll be driving it until I'm ready for retirement (in about 25 years!)

I bought my truck 2 years ago and have had nothing but problems with it. Third day I had it all of the gauges stopped working then countless electrical issues. Many problems with the suspension. This truck only has 78,000 miles on it but feels and drives like one with over 200,000 miles on it. Very unhappy with his purchase will never buy another one again.

I have had this car for only a month, 100,000 miles you expect to have some problems. However this is just to much, even with a waranty! First off the transfer case went out, then the heater, as well as the ball joints on the front end, oh yeah and my brake lights decided to short out, as well as all the lights in the car! I could have been in a really bad accident if someone didn't tell me my brake lights didn't work. The electrical problems are so bad! One day things run great and the next, nothing works (windows, lights, sun roof, windshield wipers, etc.)! Stay away from this car because your safety means more then a sweet looking ride!

I bought this vehicle (91k miles) for the 4wd, which works just fine. I'm now around 150k miles, some suspension problems. What's most frustrating has to be all the little things. Here's the list: rear wiper, oustide temp on mirror, Cruise control, led lights on/around cd player (had to replace with aftermarket cd player), lights no longer come on when you open doors, levers on both seats broke, fog lights don't work, headlights occasionally short out while on the road, all door locks work occasionally at best, I've had to replace upper and lower joints, passenger mirror fell out! All this and not to mention it gets lousy gas mileage. I get 15 mpg if I'm lucky.

When the rest of my family all has new cars I just want to keep mine. The only thing was the airconditioning needed to be recharged. It's a forever keeper even in this fuel shortage economy.

We bought used in 2006. It had 75,000 on it. We have not had a problem one with the vehicle. It's very dependable. We have driven 2 or 3 times back and forth from Michigan to Florida and from Florida to Missouri once. We have put tires on it once and replaced rear brakes in 2008. We would definitely buy another Explorer! The rear seats could be a little more comfortable, but other than that - we love it!

The radio definitely should have been fixed by Ford! Spark plugs shorted out. The driver's side door would not open from the inside so I could not get out of the car. It cost me $390 the other day to fix which hit me hard being a single mom of three children. The antenna also needed to be fixed because it wouldn"t go up and down. It got stuck in the middle. The windshield wipers did not work and the whole thing inside had to be replaced a few months ago and that ran about $280. The back one does not work now, but it is not important to get that fix nlike the front ones. I keep this car because it was my fathers and it has sentimental value or I would have gotten rid of it.

My SUV is starting to need some major repairs at 100,000 miles. After discovering that it would not pass State Inspection or Emissions Test, I placed it in the shop to fix: O2 sensors, engine oil-leak, engine light on, front-end repair to fix play in front left wheel, and a radio display light that's broke but will not be fixed because the dealer said it's a common internal problem and replacing the entire radio is the only option. Total spent to pass Inspection is $2,500. Other recent repairs include: new shocks, new brakes, ball joints at over $2,000, for a total yearly repair bill of $4,500. Also, gas mileage with the V8 is terrible.

Purchased from a family member who got it from a Ford dealer used. As an auto tech student I've done some work to it. Since I've had it, and the only problems I've found with it are leaking valve covers, and the thermostat on it got stuck open. Pretty easy fixes, and nothing that will leave you stranded. I bought my Ford in 2002 and have literally driven it high and low and everywhere in between. It has 155,000 miles on it and I've never been stranded on the side of the road, had to rent a car due to service/or repairs, nor had to repaint or wax my car. I'm sure it could use a good detail and wax job now, but I've gone as long as two months w/o washing it! Sure it drinks gas, it's a truck! It's also very comforatble and roomy. The only real complaint I have is I've had to replace the driver side and passenger rear door handles and the center console broke one day when my 200lb+ friend leaned a little too much on it as she climbed in, and sometimes wierd stuff happens w/ the electricity

Our father bought his second Explorer from my grandfather in 2005. It can get you from point A to point B, but with mediocre comfort. We use this for towing tools on a small trailer, which works great. Our car never came with the fog lights hooked up and we haven't since set them up. The dash is confusing and looks cheap, not to mention it is full of gaps. We have a CD Changer, which we don't use, the CD/Cassette/Radio/Phone set up is cool. The vehicle is fully loaded. The compass/thermometer in the overhead console is nice, but is off on the temp. Sitting in the front seems like your going to fly forward and hit your head, which I nearly did last night. Overall, this seems like a tow-truck

Purchased from a family member two years ago. I've had to replace ABS speed sensor and both 02 sensors (FYI: if your ABS light is on in your Explorer then it's about a 90% chance you just need a very inexpensive speed sensor which can be replaced in under fifteen minutes). The car has otherwise been reliable. Ride quality and handling are decent. Performance is lacking in the OHV 4.0 liter especially from a standing start. It's a lot of heft to get rolling afterall. Once your up to speed, performance is actually quite decent.

My Explorer has been a reliable car. A few things needed replacing (window motor & an engine part or two, but nothing major). Overall I have been very pleased with the XL. The size is great and the mileage isn't bad for an SUV - low 20s on the highway. About 17 in the city. It rides a bit like a truck - because, well it's a truck essentially. It starts easily and starts smoothly every time. Some rate the Explorer a bit lower, but I've had no major problems. It has been a good vehicle.

Purchased 2 years old with 34,000 miles. Original flaws repaired under warranty by first owner, but had to take it in to redo the front differential pinion seal. Relatively few problems over 7 years and 70,000 miles: the usual DPFE failure, cruise control servo that went out at 100,000, squeaky bushing requiring replacement of an anti-wind up bar in the rear suspension, very short lived ignition wires - replaced twice. Major annoyance: disappearing display of the MACH radio - replaced the power board myself; otherwise a very expensive repair. Minor annoyance: squeaky front axle seals in cold weather. Overall, compared to other vehicles that I owned, a very reliable, almost trouble- free performer.

This has been a great SUV for my family. The vehicle handles well and has excellent pick up. It has been very reliable. I must say, on the negative side, that the overhead instrument panel display lights went out and the moonroof frame came out, however it did not affect the operation. Those are about the only problems we have had and we have had the vehicle for 4 years. I put a captain's bed in the vehicle and I am amazed at the cargo capacity. I know the Explorers have a bad reputation for rolling so I am very careful but all in all I love the vehicle.

My EB has 130,000 on it now. Have had typical problems that would be found on any vehicle regardless of the make. Brakes, shocks, squeaks and rattles, etc. All of these things I consider normal for an older vehicle. Ball joints are a problem and very expensive because they're part of the entire upper control arm assembly. Replacement is fairly easy for a backyard mechanic, but $200 labor for each side from a dealer wouldn't be out of the question. Gas mileage is better than my best friend's V6 EB. I average 22 hwy and 17 city. Keep the vehicle well cared for and it will treat you well. Overall, I'm very satisfied and would gladly buy another.

We purchased the Explorer in 2004, with only 62,000 miles. It was joy a drive, and very comfortable, but I wondered why so low mileage. Did not take long to figure it out. It's almost possessed in terms of twitchy issues. When it's hot outside (which is 6 months a year in Vegas) the car will sometimes just not start, then wait 5 to 10 minutes and it will. The mechanic was baffled, but after researching it online, discovered it's a vapor lock in the fuel pump or pressure sensor. $800 to replace it according to the dealer. In the winter the excluder seals whistle. According to Ford it is a noise not a defect, but would cost $1500 to make it go away. but when it's not acting up it's a blast to drive.

Bought a '98 Ford, had a good vehicle history. Every time there was a little rattle or squeak, I'd take it in to try and maintain it. Bad thing: about 3-4 times a year something major happens. Fuel injector sticks and can't be fixed. A/C went out, antifreeze line ruptured, check engine comes on for no reason, and yesterday dash lights blinked out a couple of times. Sometimes parts just fall off - literally. Have to have it aligned about every six months. Spent over $3000 per year in repairs, and it still needs more work. Like the design, but I won't buy another one.

I bought this used 1998 with 100,000 miles on the odometer. At the same time I purchased a 2000 with the SOHC V6. The V8 increases towing capacity by about 500lbs, but the fuel economy is awful (8 city/12 hwy) compared to the V6 (17 city/22 hwy). This vehicle had its fair share of squeaks, rattles, and other unsettling noises, yet had a very compliant ride and willing performance. I'm happy to report no troubles at all with this truck (excluding the poor fuel economy).

As a family who buys new cars and drives them into the ground, I should not complain about the Explorer. I bought this car new in 1998 for about $20,600. At the time this was a very good deal. It was the base model with 5 speed and no roof rack, rear wiper or rear defrost. Good service with no work done until about 80K. It then started eating brakes like candy. Intake manifold went at 90K, and cost $600 to fix at a reasonably priced mechanic. Replaced a front axle hub for $300. Shouldn't be complaining at 107K, but no resale value and my two other vehicles are at 110K '92 Dodge Pickup and 195K - 91 Chrysler. Both still going strong. No more Fords, bought an Xterra.

Always wanted an Explorer until I got one. Where do I start -- every little curve you make it sounds like the front end is gonna fall out. The CD player works when it wants to other times it says CD error. The radio stations change themselves. The door, after the driver's side has been opened, keeps unlocking itself. Rides like a horse & buggy. Some times all the windows will roll down. Had to replace driver side door handle two times. Driver side seat latch broke so you have to sit the same way every time you drive. I’m 5', my husband is 6'2. He was driving when it broke so very rough drive for me.

i hear a lot of complaints about the gas mileage, just remember before you complain, that it is a truck after all. If you want gas mileage one should buy a Civic or some lil car like that. Rear wiper kinda stinks though, it only actually wipes about 20% of the back glass. Can't really say much bad stuff though, it's fun to drive, and a SUV with a standard tranny (i love it). All in all it's a good truck, just don't expect to go without spending some money on gas, like you would with a lil four banger.

At 82,000 unable to control the temperature, full blast heat. To fix this problem the dashboard must be taken out to get to the heater box to replace the damaged part at a cost of $1,100. The mechanic stated that this is a common problem with Ford Explorers. Terrible gas mileage; in town 14-15 mpg, highway 17-18 mpg. Owned many Fords before, this one has been the worst.

Purchased my XLT AWD Explorer last year and so far, no complaints. The 5.0L 302CID is a tried and true motor and it doesn't disappoint here. I've found it be very responsive when needed and it certainly outperformed my '96 Grand Cherokee with 4.0 I-6 engine. The AWD drive system is engaged at all times and if you have previously driven rear drive vehicles, you'll notice this but quickly get used to it. The ride quality is smooth for a SUV and it also handles pretty well for a SUV. Styling is superior to the current styling IMHO, especially the chrome grille and bumpers. Fuel efficiency is as expected, I get around 19-20 MPG on the highway. I'd recommend this SVU if you are in the market.

It seems so much that FORD upped the warranty to 6 years and 72k miles and unfortunately I am just over the miles and years for the warranty. The problems are with the intake gasket and the cam chain tensioners so look out if your Explorer is a 1997 to 1999 with the 4.0L SOHC V-6. Love this truck for everything else.

My only complaints: - Rides like a truck, go figure. - Water collects in the roof channels during rain, then spills over the windshield when you first move the truck. - Tinted rear window scratches easily.

Not worth the high sticker price

Have had alot of minor problems overs the years, especially the wheel area. Have problems with tire inside/outside tire wear. Have had two alignments, shocks all the way around, problems with led on radio/CD player, etc... Not too bad I guess, considering the amount of miles driven. But it nickles & dimes you. Probably the worst Ford I've ever owned. Miss my SHO!

I teh SUV used with 58,000 miles on it. I had to replace the breaks and rotars at 65K, replace the original battery at 75K and at 80K I needed new ball joints. The stereo system is junk. The CD player shorted out 5 months after I bought it and there is a loose connection some where in the wire running to the rear speakers which causes them work about 25% of the time. I have driven it about 400 mile from Boston to Rochester, NY about 10 times now (3 times with a full cargo bed) and and very pleased with the truck. I'm just worried to see what is going to go wrong in another 10,000 miles.

This is my last Ford..

I don't know where to start. With 68K miles engine died (chain tensioner failed),paint is allready chipped and faded, running boards are all rusty, hood lootch broke off recently, drivers seat frame and seat latch broken too, rear differential makes horrible hissing sound, front bearings and ball joints failed also, radio LED is blinking all the time, one of the control panel lights died, check engine light coming on and off constantly, had to replace lower and upper intake gaskets and idle motor(engine wouldn't start in cold weather, faulty headlights switch, terrible gas mileage and the list goes on and on...This is my lesson, last Ford EVER.

I bought the car new. It’s a good reliable vehicle, especially considering the features and 4 wheel drive components. The car handles well in high winds, up hills, and fully loaded. The cargo compartment is spacious, enough for 4 people for a week of camping. The Explorer, for me, is the right size for most all situations, easy to handle, and well built enough for off-road use. Easily handles the worst weather.

I have had this SUV for 26 months and love it! Plenty of power out of the engine and the 4x4 has gotten me (into and) out of many muddy situations. Drives like a car and sits like a truck. I spend a lot of time in this toy and the seats are holding up quite nicely.

After an accident, I needed a cheap car fast. This six year old Explorer with 90,000 + miles has become our #1 vehicle. The six cyl. gives me over 23 MPG. Go figure. Great for hauling kids to college. Ride is stiff, but you can't have it all. My first Ford in 25 years, but it won't be the last.

I bought my explorer about a year ago when it had 94,000 miles. Now it has 104,000. It makes noises when you drive. I was told to replace the shocks so I did. It help somewhat but mad the misstake and put rancho shocks on. Supper rough ride!! I bought leather seats for it and realy like them. Engine seems like a good one except when below 25 degrees, then makes funny noises when started. I would recomend, but trading in, in the next week for a pick-up.

Although my Explorer has had minor powertrain repairs, they occurred during the 6y/75K extended warranty. My other complaint is the driver's side seat recliner lever which was placed in a terrible location. It has broken off since every time you exit the vehicle, you hit the lever with your left leg. Other than the lever, I love my Explorer because it still does a lot of things well.

When Ford built this Explorer XLT, I think someone must of thinking of excellent. They have done a great job on this truck. I have owned other SUVs and this one has to be the best so far. The only bad thing I have had happen is now I have to buy a trailer to carry things, since that "COMPANY" has us Explorer owners as being "bad risk". My XLT has all the features of the Eddie Bauer for a few $$$$ less. Which I like.

10K in repairs in 3 years. Seriously not kidding here. A drivers seat that breaks off the floor mount bracket and falls back, numerous ball joint, pinion seal, bearing replacements, seal leaks, differential leaks, drive train replacement, a radio that has a mind of it's own (which means it usually doesn't work, LED that petered out at year 2, high pitch squeeling from the rear passenger seat heater fan, and the list does go on further. My last vehicle was a Toyota pick-up that I owned for 16 years. In that time, I changed tires twice, installed a new set of brakes, and changed the oil regularly.

I was in a bad accident with my 98 explorer last night, I hit a patch of black ice, spun out, and then rolled several times. I climbed out and walked away from the accident with a small bump on my head, and a few bruises were the seatbelt had been. None of the windows broke, and the truck held its shape extremely well. It's a write off by the insurance company, but it still doesn't look that bad, and it kept me safe. Good work explorer!

I wouldn't recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a SUV. The ride is hard, the electronics are unpredictable and the gas mileage is something like 10 mpg highway AND city. There's always some kind of moaning, groaning, scrapping or rubbing sound going on as you roll down the street. The Ford mechanics are clueless when it comes to repairing this thing so they have taken to lying about repairing items that they have not.

I have had this Sport for a few months. It's quiet powerful handles well regardless of what anyone else says. I've been driving full blown Nascar racecars so I know handling. Corners well for a short wheel-based truck. No fluid leaks at all, mileage 22 mpg on the road, a/c and heat will run you out. The rear wiper is almost useless unless you bend it towards the glass to get more contact. Overall I know this a GREAT value. If you don't need the four door don't get it. You still get a lot of truck and cargo area, not to metion lighter, so better mileage and cost less. Most of all DON'T get the 4.0 SOHC if at all possible.

My '98 Eddie Bauer is a great vehicle. It hauls all I need it to, has proven to be reliable and looks great. The features on this truck have spoiled me (power everything, auto headlights, steering wheel controls, push button entry, great stereo, etc.) The V8 is very strong whether you're hauling or playing with some kid in a Honda Civic. I recommend it to someone looking for a TRUCK based SUV!

At 50000 miles I spent over $2500 in repairs. I continually have problems with the check engine light particularly in cold weather. In cold weather when the vehicle is first started it is necessary to keep the engine revved or it will die. The radio and clock display failed after I owned the vehicles for two years. Personally I have bought my last Ford vehicle.

No problem with a Keyless entry --- punch in your code...as car automatically locks also. the car was great for the first year or so. the front end ball joints went at about 30,000K. wheels went out of alighment quite often. i've been thru 3 sets of tires. the radiator coil blew at 45,000. the truck has had 2 different tune- ups, and one guy replaced 2 or the four hot/cold sensors. its. ok in heat, in cold it's"chitty chitty bang bang" shakes, and rattles and causes the check enging light to go on and when read via the computer, it stated enging misfire, but cannot designate where. and somewhere in the middle of all this mishap, the l.e.d. readout on the radio, cd, and tape have vanished, as well as the clock.

This is my third and most favorite Explorer. Unless you're towing boats, the V6 vs the V8 is definitely the way to go, especially since the horsepower and torque of each are so close. I hear alot about the ride being 'trucky' but even without bucket seats (which I had in the last two Explorers) I have found the ride to be very comfortable. Thus far I have six years of outstanding reliable driving - not a single extra trip to the Dealer, beyond the replacement of defective Goodyear tires!

Well, I still love the dumb thing, and it's all been fun and for the most reliable. I had a power steering hose problem when I got it, and after a few visits, the repair dealer in Torrington Connecticut finally remembered to order the damn part After that, ran great. But like Little Big Man, she kept losing parts. Rear door stopped unlocking drivers side. Reach in and around. No problemo. Then the climate control system crashed, and for $1000, i'll keep manually controlling the temp. Then the front door lock started acting up around 100,000 miles so getting in and out is strictly dukes of hazard. Getting a new car, keeping this to trash.

Almost $4000 in dealer warranty work. Nothing major, just a lot of stuff that should not have broke. Rotors every 20000 miles. Three sets of ball joints. Two multifunction switches. Fuel pump went out at 37,000 miles, not acceptable. Dead in the driveway. Ford wanted $900 with special 4x4 tow to garage. Did it myself for $300, nasty job. Radio display bad. Rear wiper and rear electric release bad. Needs 4 shocks and brakes at 38,000. Got sucked into the SUV craze I guess, very few people actually need these vehicles. Driving 4600 lbs of detroit steel to drive work and get groceries is insane, you really can't hual any more than you can in a cars trunk and back seat.

I dressed this thing up like a "mid premium" level SUV for the high 20's. Dollar for dollar, feature for feature I'd stack it up against any other mid size SUV, domestic or imported. Its a good looking vehicle, has great pickup, and has lots of neat ammenities that come standard.

I bought my '98 in '00 with 13k miles on it. It now has 75k miles and we just redid the front breaks, pads on the back and gave it a tune up. Otherwise we have not put a penny into it. The exterior is still holding up and we have the cloth interior with two little children and that has done fine also. Its paid off so I plan to run it til it dies. I hope to get at least another 75K out of it.

2nd Explorer to have the rear wiper die, moldings loosen, CD player and disc changer blink at 50k. Ford says, "it is no longer under warranty". Shouldn't a stock stereo not start to loose it's lighted display at 30k? Dealer couldn't fix it without "sending it out" for a month and charging me. Shouldn't it be fixed, warranty or no warranty? No, go spend $300 at local Ford authorized service center to fix the player if you want it fast. I was told there it is a "common" problem. If so, recall the darn things! The rear wiper is just a joke. Nothing else needs to be said.

Very good vehicle. No significant problems. It rides solid, but bumps are felt. Reliable and no rattles. Good power (V-6), no problems on hills. Good mileage on the road (20-25) and about 16 in town.

No problems here!

Purchased new 1998- now has 60K miles on it...no maintenance issues- transmission is fine, everyone seems to complain about that one on Fords- very reliable- great creature comforts on Eddie Bauer model. Ford replaced 4 tires and spare for free, even though my particular tires weren't involved in Firestone issues. Great customer service through the whole recall issue. Haven't even replaced brakes yet! Plan to purchase another Ford after this one.

This suv has been dependable and faithful. Whatever the need, it gets the job done. Pulls boats, loads furniture, toats Christmas trees, carries 5 people. Never a moan or groan. No breakdowns, no extra expenses, just loyal. Very satisfied with this EXPLORER. AWD has been maintenance free. Excellant safety during inclimate weather.

This SUV stinks! The LED lights on steering wheel, CD/stereo player crap out and will fade in and out on occasion. The auto door locks will not unlock, even when I try to unlock the doors with the key so must climb thru the back hatch to unlock the truck! Gas mileage sucks..Transmission is starting to go, too (have 55,000 miles on 1998). This SUV stinks, would never buy another one.

After owning my 1998 Explorer Sport for a year I am looking forward to trading it in. The vehicle handles poorly! Feeling as if you're going to tip at 40mph is not a good feeling. The V-6 engine has good pickup but the gas mileage is awful! As far as design goes, the Explorer Sport is pleasing to look at but lacks in interior design and comfort. It has good storage capacity. To sum it up, the Explorer Sport is nothing more then a Ford Ranger with a topper and I won't miss mine when it's gone.

My 1998 Ford Explorer has been one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. I've averaged 19.8 MPG consistently in combined city / highway driving. At 127,000 miles it still has the original spark plugs and wires,I changed the serpentine belt at 110,000 miles even though it didn't need it and the battery at 97000. I replaced the brakes one time. After over 5 years on the road it passed its first smog check! The clear coat paint is as good as new (garage kept and detailed every 6 mos.) Towed a car trailer and car one time at freeway speeds and over the grapevine here in California, total trip time 4.5 hours not a single problem. Tough truck!

I will never drive a regular car again!

My Eddie Bauer is sweet, great looks, great performance. I'm 18 so I do a little street racing, my 2 ton+ SUV can move from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds (K&N intake and Superchip of course with no spare tire). I beat a 5.2L Cherokee with my 4.0L Eddie and a V6 Camry w/ exhaust. Top speed is 115mph (scary as hell). I rolled my Eddie once when racing and honestly it saved my life (wearing a seatbelt) and it didn't cost too much to repair. So far no major problems mechanically, it has started everytime. The exterior is killer, two tone paint only avaliable on Eddie Bauers looks better than any other model. Overall I recommend this vehicle

Once heard that Ford stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. Now I believe it. I have just over 40,000 miles on my car, and have just been told that I need $2000 engine repair. With the innumerable recalls, the constantly broken power locks, the ride that feels like they left the shocks off, the horrible gas mileage, the noisy engine, company unresponsive to complaints/concerns...I could go on. You get the idea. I'll never patronize Ford again.

This is my third Explorer and we love it! I have owned a 1992 and 1996 XLT with the V6 and have only had a few minor problems in ten years. This is my first V8 and I really like the extra torque. Anyone who buys a V8 should know the gas mileage will not be spectacular, I am pleased with the mileage I have gotten. The Explorer has a feeling of quality and safety that I will come back to again and again.

Always wanted an SUV and loved the look of the 2-Door Ford Explorer Sport. I purchased a 1998 program vehicle in Jan, 2000. I've had the heating/AC "arm assembly" replaced. I've had 3 sets of brake pads (all around) replaced this year alone. The radio LED is beginning to fade in and out. I had to replace the EGER valve...woke up one morning and the darn thing wouldn't turn over! Fog lights simply will not work for very long before having to replace. Extremely rough ride, gas mileage is horrible. Would I buy another Explorer? I don't think so.

I bought my ‘98"Exploder" brand new. Every time I took my car into the dealer to be serviced they would inform me of 10+items that were recalled each time! Now,one thing after another wrong w/the car. New tranny, radio display shorted out, rear window washer doesn’t work in rain, the list goes on and on. Ford's quality, customer service and products have gone downhill big time. The resale/trade-in value is HORRIBLE! My romance w/this Explorer is in its twilight. Today, I am going to trade it in for a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER! I will miss her but, it is time to move on to the big leagues.

AWD, V8, 3.73 limited slip differential. Only 16 MPG, but it takes off like a sports car! Leak from the front differential had to be repaired twice (at no cost to me). I replaced a bad plug wire a couple weeks later. Front half-shaft seals squeal for the first couple miles in cold weather, and need to be replaced. Bent rear wiper arm. This sums all its troubles for the 2-1/2 years and 27,000 miles of my ownership. A recent ear-ended accident resulted in just a slightly dented and misadjusted bumper. Yes, it lost almost half of its trade- in value since I bought it, but who cares - it's not for sale anytime soon.

I bought this vehicle in thinking that this could be a reliable car that would last for years. I was wrong. There is always something wrong with my Explorer from the radio to the continouous motor noise and don't forget the Firestones. On top of that they have recalled six items in my year. Ford has been making this car for several years and still can't get it right. The resale value plummets quickly thus making my car almost worthless at this time. The only Ford I will buy in the future is a 1968 Mustang.

I have recently looked into trading this vehicle and I must say that the trade in value of this SUV is very depressing. I will lose thousands of dollars. But it will be well worth it for me to get out of this thing! The ride is terrible. Feels like you're driving a truck! A/C doesn't work very well in extreme heat either. My overall rating of this vehicle is VERY POOR. Oh, I also forgot to mention that the rear window, where you open the back is leaking also.

I have had the truck for about two years now and it has performed according to my expectations. It has ample power to tow a travel trailer weighing 4500 pound. Around the city, this Explorer is fun to drive. Other than the LED display disappearing on the combo cd/cassette player and the annoying engine light turning on for no reason, I have had no troubles with this truck. I am crossing my fingers hoping that I can avoid the problems that other owners have had.

Second Explorer we've owned. Love both of them. The Exporer Sport is very stable. I got it sliding completely sideways on ice on the interstate at about 65 mph, slid onto gravel shoulder and pulled right out of it. We have 4.10 gears for pulling a small camper so mileage isn't the best but I'm impressed with the V6 power. More room than a Cherokee or Blazer. No design problems and is well built. Will buy a third.

Right front bearing and trunion went out at 3 1/2 years, air conditioning control door went out a month later. And the last straw was replacing all of the spark plug wires one month after the a/c problem developed. The ride is very stiff. Sounds and rides like a truck (Ok its an SUV). I have about 39,000 miles on my Ford Explorer. Got it for around $22k brand new. I don't drive it often for the gas mileage reasons but when I first got it I was ecstatic. However, I wish I have the new 2002 version now. I haven't hit the mileage that most of the people are experiencing problems but I know it's inevitable. Supposely the "better" Explorers become Mercury Mountaineers while the crummy ones remain Ford Explorers.

Chronologically, we have had to repair/replace: -tranny (1 week after purchase) -transmission valve body -Throttle body -New keyless entry keypad -Air sensor (once it fails you are rewarded with an exhilirating 30 minute period during which the truck will not start) -Fuel Pump -Throttle body -New tires (the original firestones had a nasty tendency to kill you) -Ball Joints (No grease points. if they ever need grease, they need to be replaced. Top notch!) Currently, I am eagerly anticipating having to replace another throttle body, as the car stalls every so often now, and well, it has been 10,000 miles since I replaced it. My two biggest complaints is the fuel economy (typical of all SUV's, and some mechanical issues. I do allot of driving, however I wish there was a diesel model available! Regarding the maintenance. Absolutely get an extended service plan. It is worth every penny. My Explorer has 50,000 miles on it...and approximately $2,000 worth of mechanical issues have had to be contended with. Maintenance is to be expected from a used car. However, I am thankful that the repairs have been on 'their dime' and not mine. Buy this car if you can get all the maintnence records to ensure that the major stuff has been repaired or get an extended service plan.

driving my explorer down the road at 45 MPH we started spinning as soon as we hit the grass we fliped. My seat Belt did NOT lock up. It was great un till the end. we now have a lexus rx300 that is a lot less expensive from problems in the explorer. 35000 for the explorer 12000 in the shop toatal 42000. 37000 rx300 2500 in the shop

Will never buy another Ford.

My Ford Explorer is the biggest piece of crap on the road. I baby the thing too but it just has problems go wrong with it left and right. The Ford service is even worse than the Ford vehicle itself. For that I'd rather walk than ever buy another Ford.

Good performance, comfortable to ride, very stable but corners slopy, interior noisy at freeway speed. Have had some problems under fixed under warrenty, rear wiper (x2), Transmission, gas tank sensor. It performed well but not sure I would buy another.

At 100,000 the transmission in this vehicle was ruined requiring a remanufactured one at 2,900.00 (including the towing). This vehicle has had all maintenance performed at the designated intervals. Immediately after purchase the transmission dumped its fluid requiring repair by the dealer. After the repair the following day it dumped its transmission fluid again. I have contacted Ford customer relations regarding the failure of the transmission and the fact that the early problems caused the later failure. I have found no one at Ford concerned enough to research my claim. Apparently it is normal for the transmission to go out at 100,000miles.

I bought my Eddie Bauer new back in 1998 over an XLT Explorer. The body styling on the Eddie Bauer is 10 times better than the XLT. I rarely see another Eddie Bauer on the road. I used to have concerns about reliability of American cars but my Explorer has never given me any problems whatsoever. There were some annoying recalls but nothing critical. Its super cheap to maintain and I love the acceleration. Sure it won't beat a Ferrari, but it's fast for a car its size. I absolutly love this car except for a few things such as the gas mileage, handling on corners, and seating capacity. But overall, its a great car.

Within three months of ownership, I had a lot of engine problems! I wasted a lot of my time, as well as money sending my truck to the repair shop for expensive mechanical problems. The customer service complaint line was a waste of time. The trade value for this vehicle is another sad issue. If I want to trade my vehicle , I will lose 3,000 from the blue book value! I will never buy another FORD!

After having many problems with a 97 Explorer, we decided to trade it in and try again. We have had a host of problems from rear wiper motor malfunction (2x), rattle that the dealership still can't find, and a host of electrical problems from dash board lights that go on and off, check engine light that stays on, O/D off light that comes on at any time and the radio/cd lights that have not worked for almost 2 yrs. Dealership and service has been horrible and useless and drove me off the road when they did not fix my brakes properly and they did not work on Interstate 85 in Norht Atlanta, not the place to not have brakes. My Dad was a Chevy man and now I know why.

I Love this SUV!!!

If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would still keep this SUV. It is wonderful, very reliable, very sporty, and able to haul whatever I need. Fuel economy is a little less than average, but the Explorer makes up for that in several other positives. Someone that is very tall or has a family, would probably not be comfortable in the 2 dr. sport model.

All in all has been good vehicle. Early rash of irritating recall items. Ride is stiff and truck like. Engine is plenty powerful (V-6) with good acceleration and passing. Good choice but not if your looking for smooth ride.

This is our third Explorer. I just love them. This one has 130,000 miles on it but it run and looks great. I wish I had gotten the V8 this time but only because I tow a trailer. I have put a air bag module on it and a Clutch fan. Other than that and some new tires it always goes.

My wife loved this vehicle for 3 years until she got a Nissan Pathfinder. The Explorer's ride is bonejarring and it drifts a lot on the highway. It seems like you are always fighting it instead of having a nice relaxing cruise (yes, the alignment is ok). I have had a few problems out of it, but overall it has been fairly reliable. Did I mention a very poor resale value? We have lost thousands of dollars when compared to other import SUVs.
