This vehicle is 19 years old with over 200,000 miles on it and it still runs like a beast. I have never been broke down not once. Husband decided to get me a mini van and use the expedition for work and doesn't check fluid which drives me crazy considering I come from a mechanic background. Not two weeks ago he left for work and ended up back home twenty minutes later saying it wasn't acting right. I checked the oil and the water and both were ran dry...I was furious!!! Any other motor would have blown but not this one!!!! I filled up the water and oil just to see what was going on with it and found that after 200,000 plus miles the water pump had finally gone out and the PCV valve needed to be replaced. I should be replacing a motor but instead I am spending 50 bucks to replace pump and PCV valve and I might add this is a simple fix. The inside in very spacious which is why we bought it in the first place. The fact that it is so dependable and still runs strong is why we haven't replaced it. I love this SUV!!!! The fuel is not what you would expect from a SUV this size. Everyone who has ever road tripped with us couldn't believe how far we could actually get on a tank of gas. I highly recommend this vehicle if you are looking for something used.

Gas mileage is terrible but roominess and cargo carrying/towing capability make up for sucking down the petrol! I'm the 2nd owner, having purchased it preowned and having 35,000 miles on it. I have performed all of my maintenance and repair work for the last 15 years and My Expy has been very good to me. I am at about 160,000 miles and have been cross country about 8 times with it and it has never left me stranded with the exception of right after purchasing it, I ran it out of gas! My fault but always keep the tank half full and you'll do ok! Change oil every 3,000 miles and do the maintenance schedule and it will last a long time.

Poor gas mileage and does not hold up as well as a foreign made Japanese or European vehicle. Ford did not support vehicle for spare parts beyond 10 years.

I purchased this in 2005 with 134,000 miles on it. I now have 299,200 miles on it now. The usual things replaced on a 5.4 like COP's starter, alternator and shift activator. Body and interior in top condition. It hasn't spit any plugs out as I've heard on other cases. It's a 98 EB Pacific Green with tan interior. I put a satellite radio in it, custom grill and grill in the bumper. custom 17 inch wheels. I believe this is one vehicle that was built on a good day. No one believes it has that many miles on it. I own other vehicles, but this is one I drive the most.

I brought a 1998 5.4L Eddie with 102,000 miles in Nov 2004. It's now Jan 2013 with 190,00 and this dam thing runs like its on steriods. Just got back from a 1,000 mile round trip with ease. Only problem in 9 years of ownership was an altenator replaced because I helped try to start someone's bmw and it damaged the unit. I look forward to another 75,000 miles (knock on wood) before I even consider sending it to the local car sales lot for retirement.

We bought the truck in febraury with 125,000 miles on it. Got the brakes fixed and windows resealed. So far this truck is great. It communtes me to and from school everyday, and has always started in the morning, even with -10 to -30 temps. I baby her, she doesn't pull trailers, and nobody drives her but me. I don't let anyone else start her either. It's quite fun to intimidate GM Ethuthusiants at my school, and I think Expeditions look WAYY better than Suburbans. Overall, definitly get this vehicle, you will not regret it.

I bought my expedition in 2004 with 85k miles on the clock to pull my boat. It tows like a champ btw. I had never owned a domestic vehicle (past vehicles-Honda, Acura, Nissan, VW (crap), and back to Honda) so I wasn't expecting much of a vehicle. Oh boy has my perception changed with this SUV. It now has 110k on the clock and it still is extremely reliable. Only issues so far are normal wear and tear items. Heater core went bad around 100k, some corrosion, otherwise, it's been rock solid. I think I'll ride this thing into the ground hopefully at least another 150k miles later :)

I have been driving my Expedition for 11 years. It has 146,000 miles on it. I haul kids and my 3 dogs in it. It is the best vehicle Ihave ever owned. It is time to replace it and I am more than likely going to get another one! I recommend this vehicle highly. It has been in the shop very little. No major repairs... Was hit in the rear with 4 kids in my car not one scratch on anyone. The vehicle is like a Mack Truck. Very solid and sturdy. I feel very safe in this vehicle.

My husband bought it for me for mothers day this year (09) and we love it so very much..Over 200,000 miles on her and still runs like a champ..With the exeption to the number 4 spark plug fouling. And it not being owner friendly on replacing it yourself..And its hard to find someone to fix it who doesnt want your first born for the price..lol..But other then the cost od up keep and crappy gas and the third row seat , love it and will get another when this one dies.Hope not for a few more years atleast.

Our Ford Expedition 1998 is still going strong with over 191,000 miles. We have taken it on many family road trip and in over ten years we have had few problems with it. We do regular oil changes and check ups but not through the dealer. We used a service station with a guy we trusted to do all repairs. Our interior is really starting to show its age but the exterior looks great with little rust. I would recommend anyone buying this truck especially one that doesn't have lots of miles on it. The only problem I had was a transmission station missing a crack in the drive shaft transmission collar due to the 1998 Expedition has the two piece not integral piece in the newer models. Mary

I bought our Expedition used in 03 with 70,000 miles. It has been a fantastic vehicle for us. The versatility of taking eight people or hauling things has been great. It has just the 4.6 engine and I have put it though the mill. We haul a 5,500 lbs camper around each summer and I have a piano service business and move pianos all over the midwest in a 3,000 lbs enclosed trailer. This old girl now has 190,000 miles with no major breakdowns. It was our main family vehicle for 5 years and we couldn't have been happier with it.

I could not be more thrilled with this vehicle. I bought it a year ago and it has never failed me yet. the interior room is amazing, and the luxury suspension provides a perfect ride. The 5.4L V-8 engine is extremely powerful, making the vehicle surprisingly fast. If you throw your foot into it, be prepared to be thrown back into your seat. I tend to drive it rather rough, but it never fails me when i need it. haven't had the chance to tow anything with it yet, but I'm confident it could handle most anything. The Shifting is also exceptionally smooth. The gas mileage is poor (average 12MPG) but keep in mind that this isn't meant to be an economy vehicle. My only regret is not getting the 4WD

As dependable as the come.

I bought my Expedition in 2003, when I had six kids at home, pulling an animal trailer, living in North East. It had 73,000 miles. Now, 4 kids in college, still have trailer, now has 176,000 miles. Safe, secure, dependable. Starting to rust out from underneath, but keep maintaining 'cause I think it will last until 200,000. Safe? I rolled it in 2005 when a Jeep ran a stop sign. 4 kids and I crawled out sunroof. No one at all hurt. Teens drive it slower than they would a small car, and respect the power more. People still comment on what a sharp looking truck it is. Looks as good as the day I got it. I love my truck.

We bought this vehicle (new) to replace a 91 Chevy Suburban (which started falling apart after 65K miles). Its primary mission was to pull a 4000# boat and haul kids and hockey gear. It has been a great vehicle. It has been an everyday driver for my wife and she likes the automatic all wheel and four wheel drive features in the winter. I love it when I have 2 adults, 5 big teenage boys on board, full fuel, bags and pulling a boat easily at 70mph. Of course I don't look at the fuel computer because it is really depressing. But it gets the job done easly.

I love my Expedition. It runs good, could have a little bit more power. It's a beautiful ride that I feel so safe in. It goes in the snow so great! It had high mileage when I bought it and at 148000 miles it is still going strong! I am the 2nd owner and the only thing I have had done to it is put new tires on it and a new alternator. But over all I would buy another Ford Expedition. My husband has been wanting me to trade my expedition in on another expedition or something else, and I say "No Way"! Buy a Ford Expedition you won't regret it, I promise.

I've owned several vehicles from fast, sporty cars such as a Firebird, a convertible Trans Am, and a convertible SS Camaro...down to an everyday grocery getter; you guessed it...the Ford Taurus. I've also owned a Ford F-350 Super Duty Diesel Lariat. I really loved that truck! I never thought I'd find another vehicle that I liked as well as our truck until I purchased my Expedition. I absolutely love it. It has that sporty look I love & all the room & comfort we could ask for. When we need the extra room in the back for hauling something large we just take out the third row seat. When our kids have friends over and we go somewhere we have plenty of room and seatbelts for everyone.

Bought my Expedition with 60k miles and it's been reliable as sin. The only work done was on struts at 90k. 17" tires aren't cheap, and neither is gas at 13 mpg, but (if you ever studied physics) it's nice knowing that you have 2 1/2 tons of metal traveling at the same velocity and direction you are. Three kids, three dogs, and a lot of help moving friends stuff was no problem for this great SUV.

Best ca I ever owned.

This suv is a great starter vehicle. This is the first vehicle I have ever purchased and being new to the driving world, being brought in with a 1998 Ford Expedition was the best way to enter. I have owned my Expo for a few months and it's been nothing but a joy. Even with the Triton 4.6 V-8 it still gets the job done and well I might add. I can haul all my friends around and not fret about their safety because this thing is so large. I have nothing but positive things to say about Ford and my truck. The only thing that doesn't work on my truck is the 6-disk CD changer due to a bad reader. Hmmm, this is a feature GM didn't offer back in '98; go figure, they're always behind on everything.

We bought this vehicle for long term ownership and it has not disappointed. In 2005 we had to put about $1200 into some repairs, but that is about it for major repairs (the scheduled service at 60k was pretty expensive at about $700). Lots of room for 5 adults, never missed the way back seat.

Pretty good vehicle until you get to about 75,000 miles, then it falls apart. Transmission, oil cooler hoses, axle seals, driver lock switch, rear driver's side door window assembly (fell apart inside door), windshield washer switch (sometimes it works, sometimes is doesn't), alternator.... (I wonder each day what will fail next). Gas mileage is terrible. I own a Suburban which is more powerful, refined, comfortable, and out tows the Ford hands down. Take my advice: If you want a domestic truck, buy a Chevy. If you want a reliable car, buy a Honda or Toyota. By the way, my Expedition is in the shop as I write this review!

Loved this vehicle until electrical problems started that dealership had trouble fixing. Then we found out the hard way that Ford Expedition and trucks in '98 and '99 have major engine defects involving the cylinder heads. Now needs new engine. Ford won't acknowledge but it is common knowledge.

I hesitated to write a review for fear of jinxing myself but my EXP has been a great truck. Bought new in late '97. Now has 112k on it. Other than routine maintenance and replacing a few seals here and there, nothing major has gone wrong. I love loading up the family in it, putting big dogs in the back and heading out on a road trip, confidently. The biggest improvement I made was to put Michelin LTXs on it. The stock Goodyears were junk. It's a totally different ride with the Michelins.

There's four in our family, and my husband sits in the driver's seat, I'm in the passenger, our son in the second row, and our daughter in the third row. It's a great car. I am in construction as is my Ford Expedition; we both handle it very well. It has all the power I need for towing yet a very smooth ride that my 6 month old daughter enjoys. It sticks to wet or even icy roads well and takes mud and rough terrain with ease. I change the oil and keep up on scheduled maintenance and it has never hinted at any mechanical problems to date. I realize it is not the funnest task to wrestle the third seat out if you need the extra space but other than the weight of the seat itself it unlatches nicely. I have 5 children who love riding in "daddy's big truck" and would never put them in anything that I was not sure about. I am SURE about my Expedition.

We purchased the vehicle new in April 1998. We now have roughly 108,000 miles on the vehicle and it drives the same as the day we bought it. The vehicle has required minimal maintenance, and is probably the finest and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I have rarely put on more than 60,000 miles on a vehicle, but anticipate driving this vehicle to at least 175,000 or 200,000 miles. It is tight and looks great! Although the original MSRP was roughly $43,000 and the mileage is not so good, this vehicle has lasted so long, and at such minimal expense that it will be the most economical vehicle I have ever owned.A great truck!

My first vehicle was a Ford Mustang purchased back in the 70's. I owned a Honda and then a Toyota that I put over 200,000 miles on and it's going strong for someone else now. I tried a Ford Ranger in 1994; purchased new with poor results. I dumped it before the warranty expired. The 1998 Expedition averaged one trip to the garage each month. I put countless thousands into it and traded a big loss for another Toyota. I would really like to buy Ford products but I'm not willing to dump money and worry when the vehicle will break down next. Ironically, my new Toyota is built in Indiana.

I bought this SUV with 55K on it. Currently have 91K on it with no major problems. Only repair thus far has been broken tie rod end which is scary because I drove it home 30 miles when the wheel started shimmeeing. After crawling under front end, the only thing holding the tie rod up was the rubber cover. $50 repair. Has decent power and is a bit heavy and rolly but I feel safe in it. It does suck gas like the tank has a hole in it. My friend has a Tahoe and he gets 16-18 mph, I only get 12-14 mph. I do think mine rides and drives better and is more stylish. All in all, a very good truck thus far, knock on wood. If they could only get 20 mph. :)

Overall it has been a good dependable vehicle to own and drive. It's major draw back is it's fuel economy, my truck gets about 13 to 14 miles to gallon city and 17 to 18 highway. Repair costs and general maintenance prices is above average.

This is a fun vehicle to drive, but watch out for the mechanical. The direct ignition system is prone to failure w/these coils running 100+ -- replacement of the eight could set you back 1200-1500

Just bought this for about $14,000. after 71k mi. the ride felt solid and the reviews checked out to be decent. I liked the security of a large vehicle, the 4x4 and the third row seating for my family of 4 and occasional guests. leather is largely intact, but you can see some rips on the drivers seat. electricals are a bit weird the 'door ajar' sign stays on for a couple of minuges someitmes, and it's tough to figure out if the whole thing is malfunctioning or if it's trying to be smart. abut 14 mi/gal. the 5.4L engine is plenty to jump the truck out of the road if you need to merge or merge ahead of the other car rather than behind it.

It has 130,000 miles on it and has been reasonable for repairs. Some quirkiness in the electronics such as lights and chimes that won't deactivate when they should. The tranny is groaning a bit even after service. 4wd system is excellent and the ride is comfortable. Just don't try an Indy car moves on the roadway or you will roll the beast. The brakes are expensive to replace. Seems that everytime it needs a brake job the rotors are toast. I am a very easy driver on the vehicle. I paid 28,000 for it in 98, used with 12,000 miles. They don't hold their value that well because according to Edmond's it's only worth about 8,000 for trade.

Had some transmission problems that would cost more than I want to spend but it is a pretty good and comfortable truck.

I am a avid upland bird hunter & I find it to be the perfect vehicle in the field. Dogs & passengers travel in total comfort. Ford definately did things right with this model, the new ones are just big cars

I bought the truck in winter but winter in Charlotte NC is usually 40-60 degrees. I purchased the expedition because I am a steel sculptor, I don't like putting rusted steel in my acura. Well I thought that was the expedition was good for...wrong. Later on that month we had one of the worst ice storms in Charlotte history. While all the cars and 2wheel drive trucks were sliding all over the road me and a couple of hummers were doing just fine. The size and the power of the Expedition is its selling point, and I can't see why any one who has to deal with snow on a constant basis would have one. It is a great buy and I am glad I have it around.

No Electrical problems ( knock on wood). Smooth transmission, brakes could be better. Above average in most respects. Pleasantly suprised for a Ford Product.

Being 6'4" tall, I was not able to find a midsize SUV that didn't lack headroom, legroom, width, or have the gear shift digging into the side of my right thigh. My '98 Expedition is the most comfortable, most rugged vehicle I have ever owned. Though huge, it is not overly "truck-like" in handling, it is powerful, roomy, unstoppable on the minimum maintenance roads I drive in Northern Minnesota. It rules.

Bought this one new in 1998. Excellent vehicle other than leveling system wore out and is expensive - compressor 695.00, front dealer only air shocks 1200.00 for both. Had two value coils go out at $400.00 each. When they start to go it is better to replace all eight of them for about $1200.00 which I did later. Seat leather and armrest are poor quality and cracked at 75,000 miles. Steering wheel leather is cheap and cannot be cleaned without rubbing off color. Great engine still runs like new. Four wheel drive and transmission are perfect and never a problem! Will buy another. Will drive this one till it dies. Trade in value is very low.

Purchased in 98, put 3000+ miles first week on vacation from Dallas to Phoenix. Experienced violent cross (60mph-blowing motor homes off road) and head winds. Ran perfect in all conditions. Only one issue with brakes, which were replaced by Ford in 2000. Turns better than many cars, and better than all large SUV's. Hope my future Expedition runs as well as this one. Uses lots of gas, but it's moving a large vehicle.

60,000 miles, very few problems. Bought it new. Brakes went at 40K, front differential seal at 50K. The Goodyear Wrangler RTS worn out at 55K. 17" Bridgestone Revo tires made a vast improvemnt in handling & ride. 4wd works like a dream; rode through 60 miles of TX South Padre Island beach sand like it was a throughway. As prevously stated, the air suspension componets (pump & frt shocks) wear out quickly and are expensive, but help to reduce excessive ride height. We hope to keep this one for 8-10 years. At 60 mph we can nurse 16mpg, but my wive's heavy digital driving style, around town we see just 11 MPG. Paint & leather is holding up well.

Never had any mechanical problems, only a few electrical problems which included replacing the rear wiper motor and the signal control unit on the steering column. Do not like lugging the heavy 3rd seat in and out. Wish there was a way to firmly secure the 3rd seatbelts down when 3rd seat not in use - they swing wildly if not secured - I use a mat in the back for cargo so locking them back in place is not an option. Would like the air vents to be a little more variable in their directional control. Otherwise, I love my Expedition and will buy another for sure.

This is a fine truck (when it runs & the "ck engine" lights aren't on.) Lots of problems (after warranty expired!) w/alleged water leakage & spark plug/coil paks going bad. All very pricey to repair. O.D. "off" switch broke. Manual lumbar adj. broke. Dealer service poor. Tends to "wander" on freeway despite alignment & tire change. Rear wiper works erratically. Beautiful truck; too bad it doesn't measure up to my old Suburban. Mileage w/4.6 better than expected- about 16-17 hwy.

This is my 4th SUV and I have finally found the truck that meets my criteria of what a SUV is all about. Room, comfort, performance (off/on road), power, reliability with a great look. I live in Colorado and spend every weekend in the mountains. This truck powers our group up the mountain with our snowmobiles or boat with out any hesitation. Pleanty of room for passanges and gear. I have driven this SUV hard and it has not missed a beat. My other SUV's (Cherokee, Explorer, Toyota) all had power issues and were falling apart at 60,000 miles. I have 100,000. on my Expedition and have only changed the tires, brakes, and shocks. Great truck!

I recently trade the first Ford vehicle I have owned in approximately 15 years. Sikeston Motor Co. in Sikeston, MO gave me a deal I couldn't refuse. I needed a full size sport utility and the only thing that fell into my price range was the Expedition. I checked with the owner and he had paperwork documenting the maintenance history. The only problem I've had was a single ignition coil and the vehicle has been all over the country. Including off road to various hunting and camping locations. I wouldn't consider buying anything else unless it was a diesel Excursion.

Due to the multiple electronic issues that this vehicle has caused us we are rushing to drop it before our extended warranty runs out. We know many others w/the SAME issues. The best 2 examples I can tell you from our experience was when it would continuously lock/unlock the doors while also having the radio on & the heater on full blast (no keys in the ignition) blamed on a 'faulty remote key'. A more frightful example is where it was starting itself in our garage (again w/out keys). This time it was blamed on water shorting a computer... which sounds like the closest reason yet all of these electrical nightmares have happened.

Its been 5 weeks and 2000 miles and overall I'd have to say that my wife and I are impressed. We enjoy this vehicle and it took us over a week to learn all of its neat little features. The engine feels strong and is much improved over my Nissan Xterra, nice low end torque. I didn't buy this vehicle for good gas mileage, but we were happy with the 16 mpg gallon on the trip up the east coast. One big concearn we have though is that the vehicle seems VERY loose in the rain, more so then my previous 2 SUV's. We are going to switch tires soon, hopefully giving us an improvement.

Bought 'Jumbo' w/30k as it came off of Ford Exec lease program. Nice looking EB version. Good thing I got the extended warantee program 6ys/75k as the car has had fairly continual electric and mechanical problems (starter, engine mgmt system, rear wiper motor, etc....) Wife won't drive it anymore as she's been towed to the dealer 2 times. 'Jumbo' currently is running rough and has the check engine light lit and the airbag failure light on, so into the shop we go manana. Might need to sell before winter. I like the Expi but in 12K miles I don't love it. In the 18 months we've owned it (lease turn-in), the switch that controls the turn signals and BRAKE LIGHTS has broken, the "brake" warning light and the "check engine" light have both come on. Plus one of the rear windows severely bends weather stripping when you roll it up. The shop couldn't tell me why the brake light came on and I'll have to go to the dealer ($$$) for the and the check engine light as it gave the local auto parts sensor reader conflicting messages. I have the 17" wheels and 4x4 options which may make the vehicle too tall for city folks with a baby like us.

I have the Black E.B 4x4 5.4L "Expy", and it is awesome!!! There is a alot of room inside, and my 5 children have plenty of room to sit. They love it! Everyday people spin their heads to catch a look at my Expy driving by. It has been an awesome vehicle. I may trade it in for the upgrade of the Lincoln Navigator, but I'm not sure because the Navigator looks too much like a suped-up XLT Expedition.

Have really enjoyed owning this car. Adequate storage and luggage space, able to take children and grandchildren with us, looks great and have been able to tweak a few things to enhance hauling capability. Put on a front class III hitch and modified the rack to haul bicycles and a canoe. Have easily hauled building materials and have moved furniture.

The above vehicle is a very roomy, comfortable, and reliable vehicle.
