I own the Ford Expedition and BMW X5 and most of my maintenance money is on the BMW X5 . Just replace the air ride shock absorbers and it feels like a brand new SUV again. There are 2 coils fail at different time , and the stabilizer bar link was broken and with 13 mpg , it hurts my wallet when gas was $5 , but overall , I feel very happy with the Ford Expedition and like most the reviewers here , will keep the car as long as I can.

This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned plus the most economical overall when you consider purchase price over 19 yr with no repairs other than maintenance. The only expense has been fuel, regular oil changes, tires, air filters, brake pads, battery, and replacement of one broken suspension arm. This SUV has gone in deep snow when my other truck ( GMC) wouldn't. I no longer need to transport heavy or bulky loads but I hate to sell this reliable friend so I plan to continue to see how many more years she'll go. I'll trade only if I can get a 20 yr. guarantee on a new SUV.

The car that doesn't die. If you want reliability, this car doesn't get the props it deserves. It keeps going. We bought the car in 2011. After purchasing it, we realized that it hadn't had regular maintenance. Had never even had a tuneup and had the original spark plugs. We were a little worried but it has never given us one problem. We even took it climbing a few times and it faired well. The one con is that it doesn't have the power I would like. We don't feel comfortable pulling our 25 foot trailer with it. We solved that by recently purchasing the Excursion. Hope the Excursion will be as reliable as the Expedition

I have a 1997 Ford Expedition that I purchase in 2000. The only maintenance that I have had done to the engine is the sprark blugs and coil paks. I am repainting it and putting it back on the road after seating for a year. I am trying to find out what is the record for miles on this 4.6 engine.

Bought this truck at 300,000 miles with a cracked radiator. Only real maintenance done to this truck is a new radiator, new alternator, one new coil pack, and some gaskets and seals. Before we started playing around with it it got about 17 city 20-25 highway. After putting a 2.5 inch suspension and 2.5 inch body lift its down to about 10 city and 15-17 highway. Mine is actually the 5.4L Triton V8. Soon the driver side A-frame will need replacing and the passenger side rotor needs to be replaced.

I bought her when my second son was born, traded in the 4 Runner. Towed the boat many miles and slept in the back camping many days. Snow, mud, rain did not slow her down. No major maintenance issues beyond a stuck shifter, compressor and alternator. Approaching 200,000, hot in winter, cold in summer. in a foot of snow and pulling a hill, nothing can stop her. I wanted to jump on the Obama $4,500 clunker deal but I couldn't bring myself to dumping her, they were going to seize her engine. It would be like putting my dog down, could not do it. I will drive her until she dies which will probably be around 280,000 to 300,000 miles.

We bought our 1997 Expedition XLT 4x4 in 2000 with about 100K miles already on it. I was leery because the first year Exped had already developed a notorious reliability reputation, but the price was so good I couldn't resist. At the time it was a good looking truck (and still isn't bad, after all these years) and gas was "cheap." Well, we've broken 250K miles and have only sunk about $2500 in 10 years into actual repairs, not including "consumables" of course. The small 4.6 L V8, which underpowered for such a large vehicle, still holds its own and still gets 14+ MPG in mixed driving -- and EVERYTHING still works (all electrical, power, transmission, 4WD, etc)! Color me impressed!

I have owned this truck for as long as I can remember, and it has only needed regular repair. The 5.4L could pull Chuck Norris in half if it had to. I tow snowmobiles every weekend for four months of every year in harsh MN winters, and I have done all of it in my 97. Nothing compares in power and comfort, and I would look to buy another one if this one dies

I've written a review before on our Expedition and I shared it was getting close to 200K.. Well she finally went over the 200K mark and she's still a very reliable vehicle. I just want to share that with everyone.. This Expedition has been the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned... Thanks Ford! We appreciate not having to buy a new vehicle every couple years. Sure Saves us allot of money.

Couldn't ask for more. Purchased in 1997 and felt like it helped raise the kids. The vehicle had heavy use. I used it plenty in 4 wheel drive in the snow in New Mexico. I pulled a boat for tens of thousands of miles in Texas and Oklahoma. I hauled kids daily and recently took to long distance weekly travel. It only failed to take me to my destination one time over 12.5 years and that was after it had 200,000 miles (the alternator failed.) At the risk of mixing metaphors, the truck ran "like a rock". Over 200k miles and major repairs were rare and related to "wear and tear" items - front-end, shocks, compressor. Going on 204,000 miles

Best "car" we ever owned!

First vehicle we ever purchased new. EXCELLENT performance; never had any problems except factory recalls for cruise control and torque on wheels - all taken care of at no cost. Comfortable, safe, and reliable. Even though gas mileage is approx. 14 mpg around town, get about 22 on the highway. Our old Toyota Camry got about 18 mpg around town - this truck beats it in storage, comfort, and safety! For a couple hundred dollars extra in fuel costs, it's cheap life insurance!! Will definitely purchase another Ford when this one wears out! But it's built so well - no squeaks or rattles - doubt it ever will. Oh, it's a 2WD with posi-traction and we pass 4WD's in the snow!

I love this thing Tons of torque, good offroad, will pull anything, and is comfy. Yeah, it does drink fuel like there's no tomorrow, but it's fun to drive, and it's by far one of the more macho SUV's on the road. I take it to an off road park almost every weekend and it can follow any of the "trail rated" jeeps that are half its size. I've also towed in excess of 10,000lbs, and other then the rear suspension being maxed the motor and trans didn't mind it one bit.

I have had my car for a about a week and love it. It is a little better than the base xlt because it has new shocks, suspension, new(upgraded) transmition, and towing package. Makes me feel important and safe while driving. The car has 166,000 miles but fells like it will run forever. The only issue i have had is getting the emitions checked, for some reason the car wont start if they have the OBD cord plugged in.

I fell in love with the cornering, power and braking right away. Since I have had it I have put over 60,000 miles on it in a short time and have only had to replace the Alternator. Not sure why but I have had bad vibrations in it on the highways even after alignments, balancing, rotations and new tires. Also seems like it will fish tail easily in the rain if your not overly carefull. but over all the vehicle is strong running, very powerfull, takes tight corners and stops easily (for a heavy vehicle).

I'm in the army so I drive long distances a lot along with living in a heavy snow state and pull several trailers. OK so it doesn't get the best gas mileage but how many of the people giving theirs a bad rating bought it for the mileage over the power and comfort you get out of it. I agree that the 3rd seat is bulky but it's great to have and it's easy enough to take out. I have the 5.4 triton and I've owned 2 GMC Jimmys, a Chevy 1500 350s, and a Dodge Ram and it outdoes them all by far. It has far more torque, towing power and I drive through fields a lot where I work pulling over twice its own weight and never been stuck yet. I would say it's the best vehicle in its class with out a doubt. Great!

Well, I've had this truck for just over 3 years now and have tickled pink since day one. Don't get me wrong, there have been a few issues such as having to replace 4 spark-pugs and their respective ignition coils (250 a pop really stinks for the coils!), 2 tires back in 06, and most recently had to replace the right head on the motor because the #5 plug blew out of the head damaging the head to the point that it could not be repaired - only replaced! Boy that was fun! Other than that, I couldn't ask for a better truck. Yes, fuel economy stinks. 11.6 m/g avg since I bought it, but I still love it. Just turned 150,000 and hope to get anothre 150,000 out of it, if not more!

We have loved this vehicle. We bought it with 108k, have 165k now. With three kids it has worn well, but showing signs of age. Ultimately it has met its death with me due to "electrolysis", which is not uncommon in this line of Fords I understand - there is a grounding fault that develops and the current causes the antifreeze to corrode the heater core, which we have replaced 4 times now. The frequency keeps increasing so we are parting ways for another expedition. It tows our camper wonderfully.

We've owned this truck for 8 years now, bought it used, 2 years old. Two major problems, transmission replaced at 100K miles, replaced injection system on 4 ofthe 8 cylinders (one at a time of course - this is a common problem with this engine). Has otherwise been a good reliable family and stuff hauler. It's become expensive (gas) to use as an everyday commuter, but we'll keep it as a part-time haul around vehicle.

Use as a small pickup sometimes when I need to haul something. Paint on roof though not visible from the ground has deteriorated but the rest of the paint is good especially for spending 4 years in Buffalo winters and the rest in WV.

I love my truck. It's a smooth ride, comfortable/roomy. I brought it in 2004 and it came without a CD changer, but I installed one in there. Could do better on gas. Considering I drive state to state, it's approching 135,000 miles and I never had a problem with it beside changing my oil and I did replace the alternator a year ago.

Bought the Expedition new in 1996, just after they came out; no major problems, but several recalls. The two problems I had included an engine oil leak, but Ford covered 75% of the repair; it seems there is a problem with the early 5.4L. There is a service bulletin on this. The other problem was the 4WD quit. A vacuum line had hit the manifold and melted, an easy fix once found. I have averaged 14.4 MPG so far, I record ever fill, so this is an accurate number. This includes a lot of trailer towing. Overall this has been a great vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle with 24K miles and have owned it for almost seven years. I currently have almost 140K miles and I have been very pleased. I originally purchased this car to tow a 5,000 lb. camper. I purchased the 5.4L engine with the tow package and lower rear end differential. The car tows well and also has a lot of space and comfort. It is great for family vacations as there is a lot of rear leg room for my teenage kids. I only have one knock and that is that the leather wore away on the steering wheel and drivers seat. I would recommend a steering wheel cover as well a seat covers to keep the interior looking fresh.

Bought new in 1996, approaching 200K. Overall reliable, engine leaks oil, 3 grand in repairs and dealer still can't figure it out. GREAT in snow, rain, sand. Lots of space for gear. Fuel economy poor, 12 /15 MPG. 5.4L is a must. Found it to be reasonably stable vehicle. Large tank means decent cruising range but filling up to the tune of $60.00 is not fun. Fortunately this is now a back up vehicle so miles and fuel are less. Overall this has been a good solid truck. As said in other reviews, it does take a licking and keep on ticking.

I bought mine in 1999 and have 105K miles. Traveled many times across the U.S. and total comfort. Only have replaced battery and brakes. I change the oil ever 3K miles. Steering is a little squirrely and feels like you could loose control at times. I will NOT let my 16 year old drive this vehicle. My friend rolled hers and it held up well. The electronic handpiece for turning signals and lights have been replaced twice. A little sluggish when passing or quick acceleration compared to my other GMC truck. Overall I can't get rid of it and hope to own it to at least 200K miles.

We just purchased our 97 EB and drove it from SD to Mississippi. It drove great but got about 14 mpg at 75 mph. Smooth ride with lots of room. Take the 3rd seat out if you don't have a big family. Just too bulky to leave in. Lacks torque of Chevy engines. Opt for the 5.4L.

I have owned this vehicle from 37000 miles till 112000 and this has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. The only issues that I have had was the window dropped inside the door right after I bought it, but the dealership fixed it. Recently I had to put on an alternator. Otherwise I have only changed the oil. No plug changes, or anything. It has 2 wheel drive, all wheel drive and of course high and low 4 wheel drive. The truck has held up wonderfully and is just about as tight as when I bought it. I now have a 5000lb camper and the truck is rated to pull it. It just has too hard a time getting up to speed, even with the 5.4 titan.

Great all around vehicle. Good power, excellent handling, good brakes, great comfort. The only down fall is less than great gas mileage, but it is not awful. Great traveling vehicle with excellent four wheel drive capablities.

The vehicle delivers what it promises - - loads of space, good handling, reasonable power and suprisingly good fuel economy (17 city, 20+ highway). Issues are easy to resolve, with spare parts readily available and the vehicle design maintence freindly.

We traded my beautifull black z71 pickup in for this Great big white Ex. At first we didnt know if we did the right thing, but soon realized that we couldnt have made a better choice.(I am a die hard ford man now.) It pulls anything and every thing you need to pull with no effort down the road. Sure the gas mileage could be better, but you have got to sacrafice a little for the power. The four wheel drive has never failed me. and I have never had to do anything besides the regular schudled tune ups. (125000 miles)

I love my Expedition! I have three kids and really appreciate the roomy interior. I have had to put 3 car seats across the second row seat. There was plenty of room! I also don't have any problems fitting my double stroller, diaper bags, sports equipment, etc. in the back. I will never go back to a sedan again!!

We bought this vehicle new and have been very satisfied. We travel quite a bit (with 2 kids) and it is very comfortable on long trips. We've used it to tow trailers and several occasions and had no problems. Only complaint is that the power door locks would quit working periodically. After trying to get Ford to fix them several times, I gave up and just started buying boxfuls of fuses and replace the fuse when the locks go out. No big deal. Only work done was brakes, tires and regular maintenace for > 100,000 miles

We bought our Ford Expedition in April of 1997 from dealership "Bill Collis" in Louisville Ky. We have used our Expedition numberous times for vacations. The large interior has been not only comfortable but also invaluable in allowing large numbers of people, luggage and equipment to be hauled comfortably.

The Ford Expedition defined the full-size SUV as we know it today. It was the first to offer a ride and handling more akin to a car than a tank (of course, such a large vehicle cannot be expected to handle like a Miata). My Expedition has never given me a bit of trouble. It still drives and rides like the day I bought it. Unlike previous GM products I have owned, there are no interior rattles, and the only things I have ever replaced are the tires (65K), and the fluids and filters. It tows trailers like they're not even there, and it can't be stopped off road. I hope ever vehicle I own hereafter performs this well. Kudos to Ford.

This car is soo much fun....I am a 16 year old who just loves my Expedition...I have the 5.4 L....that car can really take off...The only bummer is when you have 4x4 like my car the gas mileage isnt very good. Especially if you like to drive you car hard and fast. Well leather is crucial for important and it just adds that much the the comfort of the ride.

Never a problem except the check engine light came on and the dealership kept saying it was a fuel pressure problem. Upon getting an emmissions test, the tester said the gas tank cap wasn't providing a complete seal (required by GA emmissions tests). The replaced cap solved the fuel pressure problem and the 'check engine' light turned off....

I have a 97 Eddie Bauer Edition. Its never failed to start...unless it gets wet. The 5.4 pulls strong. I have had MORE than enough problems out of this SUV. Leaky sunroof, leaky windshield, the rack and pinion squeaks when turing, the "premium" stereo isnt premium, the amp for the rear sub no longer works, the AWD system engauges hard, the steering absolutely SUCKS, I have replaced the shocks, A arms on the front, brake rotors, window regulator, and my keyless entry/alarm doent work anymore, and a new rear wiper motor, my power mirros no longer work either. All these problems and ONLY 75K Ive always owned Honda products and never had any of these problems.

I bought my Expedition when it was nearly 4 years old and had 60K miles on it. I tow an 8,000lb trailer that's really a little too much for the truck, but I take it easy and the truck does fine. I got the hitch replaced as part of a recall and have regular maintenance done. The truck is a gem and I'll be disapointed to part with it when I finally do trade it in.

My Ford Expedition, bought new in 1997, has been an overall excellent car. The only negative is the somewhat squirrely steering and the fact that it once scared me silly when I thought it was going to roll over when I had to make a sudden sideways move at night on the highway.

My '97 Eddie Bauer has been on many an expedition. With 60k miles, it has had dealer tune-ups and oil changes - and never needed a part. With Michelin LTX M/S on the rig the chains have stayed in the bag. We ski no matter what the weather, and the Expedition has gotten us there safely every time. The big 5.4 liter V-8 will "haul" up the hill, or easily haul a boat in the summer. If you want to do it all with a SUV, winter or summer, this is the rig for you.

This car has been several thousand miles into Mexico's highways and back roads and has never given me a problem. If you can stomach the gas mileage and you need a 4WD and/or big car, I highly recommend it. Another word of caution. It can be intimidating in tight corners and parking in major cities. But once you know your truck you'll be fine almost anywhere.

I like how roomy it is with lost of head room and extra space for friends or cargo I also like how versitile it is when you want to make changes to the exterior all I can say is this is a one of a kind suv.

I have not had one problem with my Expedition. I have had all the recalls done. After changing the tires it feels alot better on the road. I am selling it to a woman today and it is like leaving an old friend. I never thought I would get attached to a vehicle. Never had in the past. I'm glad she is going to another woman... Only complaint is they need to consider the size of some women when they design the vehicle like this.
