I just bought a 1996 Saab 900 S convertible. I am in love with her. There are a few mechanical issues which need attention. But because the previous owner cared so much for this vehicle, those pale in comparison to the sheer fun. Riding down I-95 is a whole new experience. I wish someone would revive the make. There is nothing quite as sexy as a Saab convertible. Nothing.

I've had the car for about a year. I love the turbo performance and tight handling. I had to replace a tonneau cover motor which was really a surprisingly easy to do.

This was my first car in High School and I absolutely loved it. I bought it from my parents and it was about 14 years old then. This car looks amazing, gets about 27 mpg while driving agressively, and is excellent in winter weather. I drove the manual transmission model which was great fun. The engine was zippy and the car handled like nothing I have ever driven. However, in the 2 years I owned it the tranny went out, it needed a new exhaust system, the ignition module went, the clutch went and what eventually killed it was the headgasket blew. I loved this car and still do, but I could not afford the repairs. They were too expensive and too frequent. I sold her with a broken heart.

This is my second Saab. I absolutely love my car. It's a 1996 and I have 92k miles on it. My top still works and the car is very dependable. Right now, however, I can't figure out why my dash lights have gone completely out (can't drive at night) and my horn honks non-stop; had to remove the fuse for now. Any great Saab mechanics out there? I also need a new hose for my turbo... Help!!

I bought my mothers 1996 Se with a turbo and what I can say in the beginning,I bought the car mostly because it was all i could afford. At first i didn't want to touch it.Right now its going through some problems.I recently had to by an alternator belt to bypass the a/c compressor.I'm having to deal with lagging power due to broken exhaust studs(sad but true). My mom bought it with one hundred,sixty-seven thousand miles on a turned odometer from Plotty"s Auto Sales. Some miraculous sign.I have never seen the check engine light once.I have put a lot of time and money into her and I must say I'm hitched on this company. The reviews put me on the spot to show my gratitude.Saab's are very reliable.

Have owned our 96 900S for about a year. It's a good reliable car. Has 143,000 mi on it. The only thing we had to do was rebuild the ditributor because the camshaft sensor went bad in it. The secondary air vacuum system keeps poping up a code in the computer of a partially blocked system, which I know its just water and I need to just take a shop vac and suck it out. I just clear the code from the computer every now and then. Other than that, I've had absolutly no problems. we take it on 200~300 mile trips about once a month without hessitation.

Great car, bought it in WI, and drove it 2500 miles back home with no problems at all, i bought it with 128k miles, this car will last forever as long as you maintain it, i do an oil change every other month, trans fluid change once a year, constantly check the fluids, coolant, oil level and brake fluid. I've also installed 18inch rims on it, and wow it looks great, i've installed a stereo system, with an amp and subs, i put a strait pipe, with a custom muffler in and got rid of all those stupid flex pipes, i recharged the ac, great car. the two bad things i've noticed are: the "check engine light is always on, and when i put it in reverse the front park lights come on.

This car is by far one of the safest cars to have out on the road. I was hit on the highway by an 18-wheeler three times, and I walked away from the accident with minor cuts from broken glass. This saab saved my life. Other than small problems (due to lack of maintenance on my end), no major problems at all. I owned it for 6 years, bought it with 101k mikes, and it will now RIP with 168k miles.

I purchased my 1996 conv. in Divide Colorado to travel home. This was our 4th Saab. We drove south threw New Mexico, Texas,Louisiana, Arkansas, Mo. Ky. Va. And Pa. to Delaware. At times I cruised at 95-100 mph in 100 degree weather. The stability and handling at speed is better then my 2004 9-5. we've owned since new. Total repairs on the trip was 1 instrument light reostat in Sante Fe. since returning home I've replaced 1 Coil pack and the top has quit working. This is a great car for 1 or 2 people doing long distance touring. My daughter hit a concrete barrier at 70 after being run off the road in our 99 9-5. I will only trust my daughter to a Saab. Great cars with personality.

I have purchased this car from a private seller in Feb of 2008 for 2400.00, had 150000 miles on it, all I can say is this was the best used car I ever bought, I fill the tank and get about 425 miles at about 15 gallons, do the math, great on gas. I drive to work 75 miles round trip and the only thing I need to replace is the tires. My friends always say the car is so quiet when I idle at a red light. I am on the market for another one for my son.

For being "different," it's too ordinary.

I bought this car as my 21st birthday present. I moved on from a 9000 S to the proper turbo 900. Since I bought it, it has slowly fallen apart. Little things break, and it just adds up. The performance is nothing special (especially today), and the turbo takes FOREVER to build any meaningful boost. Also, the clutch is stiff and there aren't ANY cup holders! You need at least one, especially with a manual. The climate control irritates me. Why is it always on? Its default setting should be "off." I don't want it blowing hot air when I get in at noon in July! I think I'd be happier with an S70 T5 of similar vintage.

I bought my car new it was a demo model with 3490miles on it. As of 4/17/08 I have 148,000 on this car. The car has been garage kept and only driven from April to Early October. I get approx 24mpg city and as high of 31mpg highway. The best advice i can give people to maintian this car is oil changes every 3000miles, trans fluid chages every 7500.( The trans was not one of their best) I change plugs every year. Recently I have had to change the transmission module. ( Sent it out for rebuild $120 and reinstalled.

This car was a sheer to drive and handled like a dream. However once the car hit 90,000 miles it was pretty much all downhill from there. Repairs went through the roof, headgasket, clutch cable (3 times), reverse sychro gear which made a horrible grinding sound, the turbo went, the water pump and alternator went, the drivers side window frame broke on its own, the tires cost 500 dollars every year and not to mention electronic issues every now and again. The car was a complete disaster, the amount of repairs that i had could have paid for a new saab, every time the car went it it would be at least 400 - 700 dollars to fix. I would buy another if it was more reliable!

The 1996 Saab 900 S 2.3 convertible is one of the best cars on the market today in its category, Not only is it fast, great looking, reliable, and well built, it also gets an incredible 30 mph on the Hwy. and seats four comfortably. Awesome.

It being my first car I am very new to the whole car scene but for an entry level Saab it is nothing less than what I hoped for. The pickup and speed on the vehicle are tremendous. The sound system has been great. I just added subs to it and it made it even better. Overall it is a great vehicle. I was lucky that when I bought it had only 22,000 miles on it and it is a great car.

Bought my 1996 900S unbelievably cheap from original owner with 242,000 miles on the clock. Best investment I ever made! I have seen other reviews here, but believe me this car is made to last as long as you maintain it religiously! It is possible to install aftermarket audio in this car, but the install kit and wiring harness will set you back about $40.00. Total install and prep time is about 45 minutes, however, the factory audio system has features you won't find anywhere else. I like the weatherband tuning which will instantly pull in weather reports for your area. Plus, most people will assume that your car is expensive, especially if well cared for, no need to tell the truth!

My Saab is really the energizer bunny. I bought this car used at an auction for $1,000. It had 170K miles then. I now have over 210K miles and this car still runs strong. The only thing I have had to do is change the original clutch at 200k miles. I truly love this car and I have owned plenty of cars. I also have a 2000 BMW 3 series which is fun but my SAAB is my baby. It is my daily driver at about 35 miles to work each day. If you are concerned about a high mileage saab, dont be. Just make sure it wasnt dogged (carfax) and you will be fine. My car will go for another 100K miles easily. If you see a green saab on I95 doing 90mph in northern Virginia, just smile and envy me in it.

Our 1996 900 SE Turbo is the kind of car you’d want for your daughter if she was about to move away to college. It’s a completely stable drive in both city traffic and on the interstate and has a respectable safety rating. Very typically European, you and the machine are a single entity. It’s not about comfort or quiet… you won’t be napping in the driver’s seat. You have to actually drive this car but once you do, you’ll never feel the same about a Ford or Chevy. The 4-cylinder engine is topped with a turbo… and probably requires this as a means to produce the power that is definitely available. But the downside is that it is also very thirsty… expect to get a Thank You note from OPEC.

I paid $4,600 for a non-turbo S with low (68K) miles. It was 8 years old, but thought it should go well. Uh-huh. Fun driver, but it's stranded me 3(!) times in one year driving only 8K miles. First a serpentine belt pulley failure two weeks after buying it. No warning - belt almost fell out of engine bay. Second was the alternator ($600 repair). Third was the clutch cable. Other probs: E-brake cable squeals, rust, aftermarket CD impossible. For an old car, it cruises effortlessly at 75mph. Decent mileage. Smoothest 4-cyl. I've ever had, but nothing like the 200hp turbo of 9-3. Takes slow turns like a drunken sailor.

I needed a car that was safe, reliable, and fun. I am very pleased to say that the Saab SE Turbo fits all those catagories. It is quite reliable (and it has 75,000 miles). It always performs flawlessly. It is REALLY fun to drive (without busting your wallet in gas money)! Put the top down, find a nice back road, and prepare to have mucho fun! Luckily I haven't tested it's safety but I have no doubt that, due to how it's performance so far, it would keep me safe in the event of an accident. I highly recommend this car!

I purchased my 900SE turbo hatchback used, and it's been the best auto purchase I've ever made. This car is a great combination of performance (0-60 in less than 7 sec and great highway acceleration), economy (25-30 mpg) and utility. It's carried a LOT of stuff: kitchen set, diswasher, wall oven, kid's college stuff, & is a great performance car - I have to be careful to avoid speeding tickets. On a recent highway trip (NJ to western PA) it got 30.2 mpg. The only repairs have been typical maintenance (tires, brakes, etc.), DI casette at around 80k miles, and a power antenna that I broke. Mine has 110k miles and looks and runs like a much younger car - & still has the original clutch.

These little cars are tough as nails and get great gas mileage! Sure, the occasional engine light comes on but that is because the Swedes put too many sensors on the thing. The 4 cyl is not the smoothest motor at idle, but it runs strong and is very economical. All this and classy looks with a 4 dr hatch thousands less then Honda, and Toyota. Saab is a well kept secret.

I bought this car with 92,000 miles on it. I dont drive much (7k/yr), but the car finds a way to malfunction every 1.5-2 months. Don't get me wrong: the car is beautiful, comfortable, and performs well...but is expensive to keep up with all the problems the car has. My engine seized up just 1 month ago and I had to either ditch the car or buy a new engine. Saab need to work on reliability issues!

I have a 1996 2D SE Conv. We never had any major problems with it, it's great on gas, I commute 40 minutes to work (one way) per day and this car has never let me down. It requires the same attention as any other car would- nothing major in 7 years. I can only say that my husband took care of this car like it was his baby so maybe that makes a difference in the reliability of my vehicle compared to the other reviews.

This is a great car to drive but be ready for repairs...especially on the electical systems. I've had the power seats go out 4 times, SRS light on twice, check engine countless times, two motors for the top go out, motor for the wipper blades go out, CD changer connection go bad, communication cable to SID go bad and had the wires behind the dashboard short out and start a fire. Most of the problems occured between 30k and 80k miles...it's actually been pretty good since then, but I think that's because I stopped taking it to International Motors in Northern Virginia.

There were minor problems with the car after purchase. Major problems for the life of the car. I can rely on the fact that if the car is brought in for repair, that the car will not be repaired properly. I am aghast at the amount of repairs and high cost of repairs. In the final analysis, the car is heavy, safe, handles well. Unfortunately, the car did not live up to expectations as far as reliability and service.

Saabs are the best until you hit 100,000-115,000. I enjoyed driving the heck out of my Saab. My 1997-w/130,000- had an amazing engine- that will keep running long from now- the non-engine repairs were numerous. I had to replace the emergency brake cable, air conditioner door and motor, clutch cable, and the handle of the right passenger door. And that was just within the last few months! I write this review to say- that you'll not find too many other cars as fun as the 900 turbo to drive-but note that past 115,000 you'll be dropping $300-$400 every 2 months for minor repairs.

The car performed and handled well and was fun to drive up until we hit the 100,000 mile mark. Then everything started to die - brakes, AC, Heating, struts, you name it. So, I would say buy it, but don't hold on to it past the 80K mark. Ever since Ford? took over this company, the car is not as reliable as the Swede's manufacturing prowess.

I PURCHASED MY FIRST SAAB IN 1990, A 1984 900 SE, AND I HAVE NEVER REGRETTED THE SAAB CHOICE. THE REPAIR COSTS ARE INFLATED, BUT THE STYLE AND FUN TO DRIVE FACTORS ARE UNMATCHED. MY CURRENT 96 SAAB 900 SE TURBO HAS GREAT POWER, A COMFORTABLE CABIN, AND GREAT OPTIONS. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPROTANCE OF THE HEATED SEATS AND THE AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROLL OPTIONS. FOR THE MONEY NO OTHER CAR ON THE ROAD HAS THE UNIQUE STYLE AND CURB APPEAL AS THE LATER MODEL SAABS. I FEAR THAT GM WILL DESTROY THE SAAB MYSTIQUE BUT FIND COMFORT IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT OLDER SAABS WILL BE GRACING THE ROADWAYS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.

I purchased mine brand new and I have had almost no problems. The only one I had was an electrical glitch which was finally fixed and the car has run flawlessly otherwise. It is a great Gran Tourismo especially after I put aftermarket shocks and springs on it. It is comfortable, fun to drive, and has great cargo space.

This car has been great! fun to drive, easy to drop the top and let the wind blow. Plenty of speed and excellent mechanics. 80K miles and zero major engine, suspension or interior repairs.

Nice!

This car handles wonderfully. We purcased the non-turbo 900s to hopefully provide increased reliability. So far have been very pleased. The car has a few annoying rattles coming from the dash but that is the only complaint as far as build quality. Love the fact that it is a safe car, with excellent hauling capabilities. The car is stable and quiet at 85 mph, but the ride is a bit rough at around-town speeds. Overall we are extremely pleased with this cars blend of fun, comfort, and practicality.

This car is fast, confortable, fun to drive, can haul a lot, gets decent mileage, excellent on long trips. Excellent car in cold climates (heated seats) but make sure you put on winter tires. If you have to own one car that will do everything well this is it. This car will hit you with some high repair bills if you're not careful. Getting an extended waranty paid off on this car as the power seat and climate control both failed and were covered. If poperly maintained it is an excellent car, but don't expect the operating costs of a Honda.

I bought my Saab 900SE used and have had an incredible experience with this vehicle. I These make great values on used cars - I bought a 1988 and drove it over 250,000 miles with normal maintainance. The 900SE is fun to drive has power when you need it, great in the inclement weather, great view from drivers position and great cargo room. I have never done anything but change the oil, and regular maintainance on tires breaks etc. I would definitely recomend this car to anyone who wants a great used value.

Love it

I bought a '96 Saab 900 SE 6 cylinder off-lease and could not have asked for a better running, more fun car. Not only does it handle well, but it's fun to drive and still gets compliments and comments from other drivers. Love the heated seats in the winter and also that the car, even though it is a convertible in not very noisy. Would do it all over again.

Don't buy one!

Just wanted to put this out there for anyone thinking of getting a 96 900S. I've had SO many problems with mine. I bought it used less than 2 years ago, with about 96k miles. Since then, I have poured money into keeping it running. This car averages breaking about every month, more recently every 2 weeks. There are so many mysterious warning lights that illuminate all the time. My first car was an 85 900 Turbo, and I didn't have half the problems I had with the 96. They were obviously MUCH better made before the GM buyout. Buyer BEWARE!!

It's O.K.

Owned since 1998, I've had the LCD display and the radio head replaced once. Also, the heated seats have quit working. The biggest expense so far has been replacing the spark plug wires(about $300, yes $300) and another $450 for labor and the valve gasket that allowed oil to seep and damage the wires. Also, parts are OUTRAGEOUSLY priced, up there with BMW and Mercedes. The ride and handling are good and the car is generally fun to drive, and overall I like the car. However, if you are contemplating buying one of these, remember this is not a low-maintenance vehicle. Fortunately, as a used car they're generally (initially) cheap.

Love my convertible beauty!! It's fun to drive. Auto tranny slows a bit but very good for city drive. Encounted many quirk minor failures: A/C, outdoor temperature sensor, oil pressure sensor, SID(SAAB Info Display) lost pixels, check engine light on and off... Major disapointment is dealer, SAAB OF TROY in Troy, Michigan. Was charged $500 to replace my driver side seatbelt system, just because it was deadlocked. Maybe replacing whole system is the only solution, but I was even refused to give a 12 point courtesy check after the service. It's free in most garages! And worse, my car wouldn't start when I picked it up... I will never go there again.

I have a boxster and saab conv turbo...the saab is a great car, I have had no problems with it, like any car it needs to be properly maintained and driven responsibly, If you do that this car will last. I will probably trade both cars in on a new 911 next year.

I wanted only a Saab. Nothing else. I finally found a 900SE, 1996, 2 doors coupé, red, 5 speeds full, full equiped. No option missing. My dream! In Québec province, our french automobile buyers guide does not encourage peoples to buy Saab. They prefer BMW. They say that this car is dangerous because it is a performance car with front wheel drive. They say that it has to be rear wheel drive. I agree a little bit but with the winters we have in Québec I prefer a front wheel drive on snow and ice.

I have a 900SE turbo, black on black, beautiful and incredibly fun to drive. It was a great car for the first 4 yrs or so, but has absolutely fallen apart in the last 1.5 yrs. Furthermore, the Saab dealerships to which I have taken it for service in Atlanta (Jim Ellis, and Kelley before that) have been difficult to deal with, and have not actually fixed the car. I am about to trade the car, and unfortunately, due to my recent experiences with the dealerships, I won't consider the 9-5 as a replacement, even though recent reliability reports suggest a significant improvement since my model year. I am buying a BMW.

After 135,000 miles I'm still on my original shocks & struts, brake discs, drivetrain and engine. The only complaints I've had from a repair stand point has been weird electrical problems and constant oil leaks.
