This FJ is very confident, it runs very smooth on the highway and has no problem cutting through snow (just need some good all weather tires). I have a brand new 4Runner limited, and prefer to drive the FJ usually. The 4 liter engine is so much fun, and taking it through the back trails of northern Virginia never gets old. Milage currently at 175k

the vehicle is me..simple-reliable-fixable. i travel a lot as pediatric nurse. i am also a firefighter both paid and volunteer. i needed reliability and got a 95 Cherokee cheap. i worked on it in spare time. then got rid of my regular pick up and bought a 96 Cherokee sport. now i had 2 Jeeps. 275,000 miles average and drive both regular. i do have some mechanic experinace before Jeeps came in the picture but its a dream to repair. i have never been late or missed a shift with a Jeep. there are times i get paged out for a structure fire at 0300. in 5 minutes i am on road with jeep. over the last 10 years i have owned bought and sold 12 Jeep Cherokee. i still own my 96 and 95. They dont have fancy electronics but i dont need that. i stop and help people on side of road every time i can and if its a Jeep which is rare i can get them up and going. My wife has a XYZ (wasn't sure about putting other vehicles in here). to change her thermostat takes about 1.5 hours. her vehicle is 2 years old and she loves it. it has everything known to man. i can change my thermostat in 15 minutes. our son took a jeep to college. few problems only. Jeeps are forgiving. i want go into same issues i hear all the time. i think there are 3 but learn about the why and you want have a problem! i am soon for retirement and guess i will work on Jeep Cherokees..i dont like Grand Cherokee but it isn't personal! There has been a surge in Cherokees lately in both interest and prices but i believe its because a lot of people are going back to the basics which work!

For a Simple Man Such As Me This 1996 2 Door Cherokee Jeep 4X4 5 Speed Manual Is Actually A Piece Of Equipment To Me. Why you may ask? Well I Bought this back in 2009 from a one owner he was in his late 60's, He ordered it new in 1996. He ordered it with the Sport Package: Power Windows, Power Door Locks, Roof Rack, Rear Window Defogger, as well as the wiper, Matching interior gray cargo cover, and Top of the line Aluminum Wheels with full size inside mounted matching spare tire. I Gave My Jeep a 2" Lift and instead of P225 R15 I raised it to P235 AT Wrangler tires. This Vehicle Looks Good can go anywhere on or off road incase of an emergency. The Jeep is just Smart enough that when it comes to smog or Diagnosis all it takes is a Plug In Less than 5min. Never has any Mechanical problems. The Jeep Has just Enough Electronics for proper engine and smog Operation which is all I ever wanted. No Electronics and solenoids to Fail it's all Manual ect : Pull Lever to activate 4X4 Not push buttons or solenoids or sensors to fail. Front and Rear Axials and not this independent suspension with CV Joints and boots to tear in dry sharp Brush or Rocks while exploring a place to make camp, Not to mention they are weaker than U Joints. Change the oil every 2,500 Miles, Coolant, and serpentine belt once a Year, Differential and Transmission as well as the Transfer case every 10,000 to be sure water contamination does not take hold to do any damage. K&N Air Filter (washable every 35,000 miles) saves money and gives some Xtra Power. Don't let your tank go below 1/4 tank and your Fuel pump in tank will stay cool and not fail. Simple and Cheap to perform Tune-Ups + Easy Access!!! Simple to perform all Maintenance (oil, trans, differ, transfer ect..... The advantages over others is Lights don't fade and oxidize and look bad, NO Parking Aids, as Far as Safety has Driver Air Bag, No Active Safety, No Navigation, No USB Ports, and No Entertainment. Just no nonsense piece of equipment down to earth vehicle Simple to Maintain and Operate AND No Nickel and Dime in you. This will be the Latest vehicle I will own. The New Autos across the Board are more computer and less control of your vehicle, than what once ruled our roadways and will continue on that trend. Complaints 1 It would have been nice to have the engineers to have more leg room up front my knees are up to bottom of dash and steering wheel. There is a question as to what happen to the Jeep Cherokee in 2002. This is what I found out in research is THE POWERS AT B IN CALIFORNIA told Chrysler Corp that the 4.0 liter has ran it's coarse and is out dated and that Chrysler needed to scrap the inline 6 for a V6 that will meet tighter emissions. So out with the Cherokee and in with Liberty. Anyway such as life I hope this helps to those who own or look to own a Jeep of that era.

See ya Cherokee

Took my Cherokee to the junkyard today. Bought it new in 1996. It's been in all environments, the coast, mountains, deserts and cities and performed like a champ. Replaced a water pump, brakes, tires and radio. The only thing that didn't work was the hydraulics on the rear hatch. Rescued stranded motorists, carried Christmas trees and was given to my son as his first car, after it had over 209K miles racked up on it. My inexperienced son ran into a F250 Ford dualie and tore the rear axle right off that truck. The Jeep suffered terrible front end damage. My son didn't have a scratch. I should be so lucky, as to go out as big a hero as that Jeep!

I purchased my Cherokee back in 2006 with 180k miles on it, and drove it everyday for a couple of years. Now it sees limited use (towing, going off road, and hauling stuff around... hard miles) with just under 220k miles. Burns no oil, always starts, and when something does go wrong, I've always been able to fix it myself. While it was my daily driver, I added a 2 inch lift, and a year later got a 3.5" lift and added larger tires. It's quicker accelerating than a Hummer H3, as tested by some guy and myself (on a closed course) a while back.

This is my first car, and I NEVER will get rid of it!

I own a two door 1996 jeep cherokee sport (I know it shows 4dr 5 speed) but this thing is AMAZING! My cherokee is so much fun to drive and even though it has street tires and no lift at the moment, it can go straight through mud. I am currently building it up right now. I have a k&n cold air intake in it, brand new tune up kit, and a redone exhaust system. It's rugid, reliable, and can take a beating. I love my Jeep.

i have owned my jeep for elven years and it has been lifted for about 7 years, and have over 300,000 miles and running strong. the 4wd drive system is indestructible, as well as the 4.0 straight six, it wont ever give out and has never left me stranded other then a dead battery in minus 20 degree weather.

Why did they quit maiking these?

Best car (reliability) I have ever owned. The cast iron inline 6 cylinder is amazing. This is the best snow car I have ever driven. I can do 55 mph on 4-6 inches of snow without even a wobble. It is a true snow car. I do all tune up, oil changes, and all maintenance on this vehicle. It is as simple as a 1960's car. Biggest mistake Chrysler made was to stop building these in 2001. The jeep liberty (successor) does not even hold a candle to it. All SUVs started with this design. It is a true on or off road SUV.

I Miss it!

Bought it used w/141k miles - all original parts! YIKES - replaced just about everything - clutch, brakes, muffler, starter, cylinders... you get the idea! However, they were ALL factory original! Loved it! Sitting at a stop light last fall got hit by 2 other cars - head on & drivers side - total loss - but I walked away. Looking for same car 5-speed 4WD. Wish they still made them - my mechanic said they were one of the best cars EVER made & easy to work on too! Even cheaper to repair!

This Jeep has been the most reliable auto I could imagine. I had to replace the water pump a couple times, the radiator, and have the intake cleaned once. Other than that, we are talking regular maintenance, and 219,000 miles later she still roars to life every morning. I have driven her on the beach, in the snow, out of holes (my fault), and every time, the Jeep has been up to the task. I say all of this and remind the reader that the Jeep 15 years ago is not the Jeep today. I think simplicity, quality mechanics and minimal electronics is the way to have an auto you can keep for many years.

I bought this 96 Cherokee back in 2006 with 70k. I have replaced a couple of sensors-1 was causing the car to die intermittently. It took about 4 different trips to the mechanic before they figured out what was wrong. They thought it was the o2 sensor but it wasn't. It was the-hmmm...can't remember sorry. I have also replaced the water pump, radiator, starter, brakes and had a couple of flushes. It has been running great since. Great 4WD & good pickup. Bad gas mileage- about 14 mpg. Took it up to 100mph+ & got some intense shake. The doors and locks could have been designed better. Had problems w/the a/c-vents stopped blowing due to a broken lever inside. Very bumpy ride.

I have owned a Bronco, a Wrangler, a F- 250, and a Tacoma. This is by far the best overall. The straight 6 has almost as much power as the V8's in my 2 Fords. Before I put new tires on I often had trouble not spinning the tires in rain. For an SUV it is quick. The 4wd has never left me stuck. There is room for all I need. I have only had minor problems other than needing a new rear end. These are cheap and easy to find and well worth the money. You can find after market parts for it almost anywhere. It is easy to work on. It has classic styling and almost everything is practical. I recommend it to anyone. Great in snow, off road, and in traffic.

It has been a very reliable vehicle, and still runs great at 219,000 miles. I used to drive it daily until it was hit from behind. Now I use it mainly for hauling and plan to let kids drive it eventually. I would not hesitate to buy another Cherokee. They are a great value for the money.

I'm the third owner of my Jeep. I bought it at 191,000. Today, I'm proud to say it's at 298,000 and still running strong. Just know this, I recently entered my vin on carfax out of curiosity and found out the 96's have a recall for the catalytic converter. I had no idea. I actually paid a lot of money for a mechanic to fix this almost 2 years ago and it's acting up again. I'm bringing it into the dealer tomorrow. Know your car!

My '96 Jeep Cherokee Country was handed down to me with 280,000 miles on it and me being the 4th driver! It came from Texas and driven all over the eastern coast. Very reliable! The motor has been rebuilt, new transmission, but other than that, just typical wear and tear maintenance. It has been a great vehicle for our family and we plan on buying another Jeep soon.

We went from San Diego to the midwest back to San Diego to Alaska and over 500+ miles of continuous gravel road. Then Alaska to Boston to Illinois to the Keys. Plenty of 4WD times. All with our 18' sea kayaks on the roof. I just saw a post that somebody is closing in on 900,000 miles on theirs. I wanted 300,000 but now just set my new goal. There's something like home in that square box. Drives great and very reliable. Heading to the west coast from Indiana soon. Replaced radiator, water pump. Only other problem we've had is with the AC. We didn't know that for a solid couple years. We're windows people.

I bought my 96' Cherokee 2 Door Sport 10 years ago with 35,000 miles on it. The only work that I have had to do to it was replace the muffler and tailpipe, set of front brake pads and a starter. It now has 145,000 miles on it and uses no oil and gets around 22-23 mpg. It is the most efficient 4wd I have ever owned. I wish they still made them! My body is still in great shape despite the winters here in PA. The paint isn't the best but it has yet to rust out. The engine is a work horse and will take me anywhere I need to go!

Bought it with 154k miles on the odometer. Fifth Jeep I have owned (incl a 90 and 2001 Cherokee, and a 97 and 98 Grand Cherokee). I never hesitate to buy a high mileage Jeep if it has been cared for by the previous owners. Immediately switched it to synthetic fluids/lubes for everything but the transmission. Just passed 232k miles and still going strong. Needed to replace the radiator at about 190k miles. While I had things apart I also replaced the coolant hoses, heater hoses, trans and power steering lines just to be safe. The last thing you want to do is tear it all apart again in 30k miles. Lazily neglected to replace the water pump. That came back to bite me about 20k miles later.

I bought the car thinking I would have it about 5 years. I drove it for 12 and had only routine maintenance. It has pretty good get up and go for merging onto the interstate and the Part-Time Shift to put it into 4WD for icy/snowy conditions was nice to have. I recently checked and found I get about 17 to 18 MPG.

A true SUV icon.

Purchased in 1998 with 44,000 miles. Now approaching 230,000 virtually trouble-free miles. This solid vehicle has been a reliable constant in my life throughout several major life changes. Always starts easily, has great torque, strong 4WD, superb off- road capability, sure and confident handling. The I6 engine is the best Chrysler has made. Paint and body still looks new. Have needed to replace radiator, rotors, brake hardware, clutch, water pump, serp belt, and steering gear box but that's about it. Of course it has a bit of highway noise, interior and instrument materials are rather cheap, and it is a not as comfy as a new SUV. However, these are not what sets a Jeep apart from the rest.

Purchased our jeep in 1998 for my wife to drive. At first glance she didn't like it, until she hopped in and took it for a spin. Haven't been able to get her out of it since. Excellent vehicle. Some maintenance in past 10 years but nothing major. I hope to get her another vehicle and I will get the jeep. I bought my Jeep used. It had 80,000 miles on it. Was worried it would have problems but it has never broke down and only needed maintenance I have yet to have an issue with it. The gas mileage is fair, with gas prices I think every vehicle but hybrids are in the same boat. It's dependable and it's been a great Jeep. We've talked about upgrading to a newer one but this one is so wonderful I hate to give it up just yet. We do a lot of driving and I now have 159,000 miles on it and wouldn't hesitate to use it on our next cross country outing!

I bought this vehicle about five years ago and still enjoy driving it! The inline six is a tough and reliable engine (original AMC engine design with some Chrysler modern mortifications). The vehicle is truly a SUV, it’s nothing to brag about, it’s very thirsty, and it’s very versatile. What can I say, “It’s a Jeep!”

I got the Jeep in2001 with 120000 from my mom. I've had it for 6 years and it's been great. It was problem free until it got over 150,000 miles; it now has 207,000. In the last 50k miles I've replaced, 2 water pumps, starter, rotors, alternator and all the normal parts. The headlight switch has gone bad twice, the doors don't latch well and the inside handle has broken off along with the rubber stripping. It's got a 3"skyjacker lift, Rancho shocks, JKS links, Flowmaster muffler, throttle body spacer, cold air intake. front tube bumper rear hitch. I got this vehicle when i was 19 and I've driven it hard. Before it was mine I learned to drive on it, hard miles.

We have owned this Jeep for about 5 years and there have been no breakdowns and only regular maintenance. This Jeep is very fun to drive; the 4.0 litre straight 6 has a lot of torque. These Jeeps are very off road capable even in stock form. Because of the light weight and disc brakes, this Jeep stops almost on a dime. The 4 wheel drive is very easy to use (shift-on-the-fly). The interior is very roomy for a compact suv it can comfortably seat 4 adults or 2 adults and 3 children comfortably plus dogs or groceries or whatever in the back. Over all this is a great SUV.

Have owned the Jeep for 10 years and it's still fun to drive and knock down a Mustang or 2 with it's fantastic acceleration to 70MPH. (Speedo only goes up to 85MPH) Best engine that was ever put into a Jeep. Even my wife gets a kick out of it. Have only put in approx. $600 in repairs needed over the 10 years with the biggest expense being to replace the radiator with a new aluminum one with a lower pressure cap. This happened at 163,000 miles last month. Interior carrying room is also great and I remove the lower back seat and put the back down to get more room than that offered by the new SUV imitators. Wish they still made this one.

108,000 miles, Classic package, AC/AT/CC/4.0/4WD, (even push-up sunroof). Beautiful, practical, dependable, lovable car! Just big enough, classic lines, most indestructible drivetrain ever built, nimble, responsive, turns on a dime, excellent reliability & safety record, excellent parts availability, easy to work on. Still looks beautiful inside & out, even the cigar lighter still works, feels so secure on NE's winter roads with the fantastic on-the-fly 4WD, not a rattle or squeak. I've added a CD changer, a good double cupholder I bought on eBay, and a firm foam wedge cushion for more driver's seat support. Take good care of a Cherokee and it will take care of you for a long time

I cannot be happier with my fun 1996 Jeep Cherokee that I bought at 126,500 miles. It is a sleek, black Sport 4Dr 4WD with gray cloth interior, OEM aluminum wheels, and Goodyear Tracker tires. The car is in fantastic condition, in terms of the engine, transmission, suspension, electronics, interior and exterior. It simply looks cool and commanding. It's as if Jeep's new Commander design team went retro and modeled their design off of the original '84 Cherokee. I'd even venture to say that the new Mustang is to the original '65 Mustang as the new Commander is to the original '84 Cherokee. It's a lot of fun driving this car. The shift-on-the-fly 4WD gets me anywhere in brutal Chicago weather.

I like this Jeep; it's got the advantages of the smaller suvs such as ground clearance, storage, passenger room, roof racks, rear wheel drive and just being up higher than small cars (plus it looks like the 4wd). Plus the advantages of a compact car -- good ride, fuel economy no extra drivetrain to weigh it down or maintain, transmission/clutch repairs are a breeze compared to its 4wd cousin (no transfer case to deal with). Overall good little suv for the budget minded person. Also the 2.5 4 cylinder is surprisingly spunky. It's not a slouch as you would think; it's no 4.0 liter but more power means less fuel economy. This day and age I'd rather have the torquey 4 banger! it does the job quite well.

I LOVE my 1996 Jeep SE Cherokee! I bought it new in 1996, been driving it ever since. Just today (10 years and 87,000 miles later) had to bring it to the dealer with a problem (no heat, but overheating). It's a nice compact 4-wheel drive that has given me no real problems for the past 10 years. Good for snow and good for city driving and parking. Pulled a boat 2,000 miles to and from Florida, hauled dogs and dry cleaning. I love it! I even love its '96 boxy design. Downside: back seat is small & the cup holders worthless, occasionally overheats a bit in the summer if I'm sitting in rush hour traffic.

Purchased vehicle in '98, used, from private seller who didn't even know it had 4 wheel drive. Used for everything from daily work commute to locating trail heads of mountain bike trails. Capability is superb and so compromises ride quality. Mechanically very sound, only replacing AC electronic switch ($20). Not looking forward to being able to purchase another when the time comes.

I bought my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport new. It is still running great. I have only had general maintenance and no major repairs. It is perfect for me to haul around my 5 dogs. The only complaints I have are 1. the cup holder was poorly placed when designed. It broke off twice and I replaced it once. At $12 a pop I decided to do without. 2.The radio died after 5 years and the replacement I got is nowhere near as simple to use. 3. I wish they had allowed for a little more leg room. Overall, this Jeep has been very good and reliable transportation and I will probably drive it another 10-12 years.

Had vehicle over 7 years. Hauls everything from hay to infants. Have driven through swamps, & snow covered roads other vehicles couldn't. Plenty of room to haul tools, supplies, and kids gear. Rear seat does not have a lot of legroom for adults so not recommended for long trips with 4 adults, but fine with kids. Get 20 MPG. Low maintenance bills. No major problems. A little noisy/bumpy on the highway compared to new vehicles, but it really drives well in the bad weather. This Jeep has driven: dates in college, buddies, friends going fishing, dogs, tools, clients, building materials, canoes, the bride and groom, babies, toddlers, and gear in all types of weather. A good all-purpose vehicle.

Thank God for my Jeep! I bought it with 77000 miles; it now has 91000, and I only got it 8 months ago. It's been very reliable; the only thing I've had to replace so far is a power steering pump which is nothing. My Cherokee is great in the snow. It is very comfortable for a driver that's 6'3" and it's fast. The gas mileage isn't the best, but what is these days.

I really can't say enough about my 1996 Cherokee Sport. It has been an amazing vehicle, and I've had my share. No doubt about it, this is a JEEP, not a luxury car - and it looks and feels that way... rugged and utilitarian. However, they are great for a varity of scenarios, including the urban jungle. If I had to pick a bad spot, I'd have to say gas mileage and comfort on longer trips. This classic model is a bit aged these days, but they're a wonderful value for the price.

Bought our 4WD Sport new 9 years ago. At 99,000 miles, it has been mechanically perfect - not a single breakdown. Only repairs have been normal maintenance items. Ample power for pulling a 2,000 lb trailer over high passes. It's noisy and rides like, well, a Jeep. But on lousy mining roads, it never gets stuck, and is absolutely unbendable. Not stylish, not particulary comfortable, gas mileage is nothing to brag about; it is the ultimate utility vehicle.

Only thing I have little complain with is its fuel economy. However, this vehicle has 4.0 L engine meaning that naturally fuel economy can't be good as one expects. Moreover, this vehicle has fast acceleration.~ good good good. I don't see any bad things.

The original Isuzu Trooper was my other choice but MAN THIS WAGON IS FAST! You look at her and you can't imagine that a big powerfull engine is under there. The size is great (although a little cramped inside) and the looks are timeless. More than a few have asked me if I sell it and the awnser is NO. My only complain is with the ride quality, wich is awfull... somethimes irritating. I think Chrysler could have keep bulding the basic model, just like Chevy its building the Astro. Bought the Jeep in 96. Have had very little problems with it other than the standard battery etc. Would recommend this vehicle for anyone with a family or pets. Great for moving furniture and household items, transporting passengers. I have kept it for 8 years because of the low maintenance, and the many possibilies of its usuage. Have gone one vacation with it and have more than ample room to stretch out and keep the luggage in the back. It rides smooth. I would definately think positive about trading it in, in a few more years and buying a new one.

The only problems I've had were an old worn radiator hose that had to be replaced ($8 big whoop), and a tire that fell apart. Not the Cherokee's fault. It will be a sad day if i ever have to part with my XJ. it's fun to drive, very quick for an SUV, and it's awesome off-road. rides nice, the engine is very torquey, also the 4.0L I6 engine lasts forever. the back seat is small, not really ment for large adults on long trips. cargo area is decent. my spirited driving style nets around 18mpg, mixed driving. as high as 22mpg on the hwy. very reliable. doesn't have problems w/the little stuff breaking like in other cars. there are noises, but that's the Jeep trade mark. so far the noises haven't caused any problems in almost 100K miles, so i'm not worried.

My jeep is used for pulling heavy loads, hunting, fishing, scuba diving, trapping, and fun. My friends always comment on how jeep should use me in their commercials. I find that it is extremely nimble off road, and has great power and handling on the highway (even when pulling a load). Bottom line is that it`s reliable and practical. It carries a large canoe well with it`s sqaure racks and it`s size is just right. I went on a 10,000 km trip across canada and it was loaded to the max. It drove like a charm, both on and off the road. From anyone I know with a jeep, mine has many years left. Hopefully the jeep will be brought back by the time I need to replace this one.

The Cherokee is what an SUV should be; power to tow, excellent off-road capability, reliable, versatile, tough, and still comfortable and fun to drive. I have not had any problems with the vehicle. It tows a trailer very easily, is confident off road in some very rough country, and still works great for hauling groceries or clients. I admit to being a little critical of SUV's that were never meant to work. It seems like a bit of a waste.

I don't understand the decision to put this vehicle out to pasture. For the price and versatility, this has, by far, been the best vehicle I've owned. At 6 1/2 years old with 102,000 miles, mine is still going strong. All I've had to do is keep up with the basic maintenance. The worst mechanical problem I've had is the water pump went bad at around 100,000 miles. The model that took it's place will never match up to this awesome vehicle. I'll drive this til the wheels and engine fall off and then I'll replace them and keep on going. This will probably end up being the vehicle my kids inherit when they get their driver's licenses. I agree with the other review - BRING IT BACK!

the jeep I have is a great one. yes I have made several changes such as a chevy small block v-8 and a few fun off road things. but just as a jeep as it was it was great to go out and play around in the back country. I only find one problem with the jeep, the electrical wiring, I found, is a little out of the loop. wires often come loose and can cause you to kick and yell at the jeep. but other than that bot the 2.8L and the 4.0L motors are great.
