This vehicle was given to me with 280k miles on the odometer. Even now, it is unstoppable. With only two wheel drive I've never gotten stuck, despite my best efforts. My Jeep has seen a lot of trails--and a lot of things that are not quite trails--and has pushed through all of them like a champ. The straight 6 gives not only impressive torque for a 4 liter, but an incredibly smooth drive, and has yet to fail to get me over any mound of dirt and rock I've thrown at it. I've owned it for six months and have had to replace both idler pulleys. When the second idler pulley quit, it chewed up the mounting bracket pretty good. Picked up a replacement bracket for ten bucks at a scrap yard, spent thirteen on a pulley at AutoZone, and did the repairs myself. Most expensive maintenance to date. There's a problem with the clutch (automatic), but manually starting in first circumvents such transmission problems. To hear it told, I wouldn't bother rebuilding the transmission- If it quits, you replace it. I'll happily drop the $1500 when that happens. When I fold down rear seats (quickly and easily), I can lay down and stretch out completely in the back. I never imagined I would be an SUV owner, but I _love_ this Jeep. For a point of reference, my dream car is a Chevy Spark. In that vein, gas mileage leaves a lot to be desired. Even still, I wouldn't trade it for a Prius (my BIG dream car). Okay, I'd trade it for a new-ish Prius C. Any takers?

Great vehicle!

I've had this vehicle for around a year now, it has 240k with nothing rebuilt. It has the 5.2l V8. (not sure why it's not listed in here) Very fun vehicle and I love opening it up and listening to the engine (got a glasspack on it so it's a little louder). Good for offroad although it could use a locker in the rear.

Great... not so much

I bought this car prior to winter two years ago. I live in Wisconsin and the winters here are just terrible. I bought it with about 160,000 miles on it. The 5.2 V8 was an absolute beast. Put a K&N Cold air unit on it, and Flowmaster 4 series exhaust and MAN did this jeep go! Started running into problems around 170,000 miles, Fuel pump ($400+ Just for parts), Crankshaft position sensor, Throttle sensor, security system. The problems ultimately led to the sale of this car. Sad day.

Never seen anything like it!!!

When I received this car as a gift, it had 140,000 miles on it. I immediately needed to replace the front and back brakes, which cost over 1,000.00. The transmission then went out around 155,000 miles, and the rebuild cost over 2,000.00. Barely over a year later the transmission went out again and had to be repaired, luckily it was still under warranty. I have spent more on this car than it is worth. It's sad because I LOVE the way this car drives, great acceleration with the V8, and it handles very well for a bulky SUV. Now the power steering needs to be replaced at 177,000 miles. We are good about regular service, but this car will nickle and dime you to death if it has high mileage

I bought this car from my grandmother with 160,000 miles. I've since done more than a few minor repairs (radiator, alternator, idler pulleys, etc.), but nothing I couldn't either do myself or a family friend couldn't do for cheap. The belt tensioner pulley is messed up, causing strain on the alternator, so I have had to replace it a few times, but it is under lifetime warranty with free replacements and I do the work myself. Now, it has 231,800 miles and counting, original block and transmission running stronger than ever. If you can live with doing relatively minor repairs, doing proper maintenance, and don't drive like a bat out of hell, this is one of the best vehicles made.

I Love my zj, got the 318 v8 in it and man that motor is solid and fast with the quadra trac transfer case. Gotten stuck once in it but easy to pull out. Has 175,263 miles on it and still running strong and tranny shifts smooth. Gas mileage is alright for a vehicle that is 15 years old. about 15 in city and 22 on highway give or take. Would drive it anywhere and Chrysler can build a great vehicle.

I bought my 95 zj in 2007 and I have never regretted it. I have had to replace the starter, water pump and alternator as well as front brakes and regular tune ups but that is to be expected. The inline six is amazing!! She is about to hit 200k and is still going strong. I live in Iowa so when winter comes other drivers cringe but I say bring it on. No matter what nature or myself throw at my jeep she takes it without missing a beat and keeps going. Including a deer and my tire coming off on the highway. I have never owned a better vehicle. I want to drive my jeep until the wheels fall off and then I will put them back on and keep going! I love my Jeep!

My parents bought it new in December 1994 and it just passed the 200k mark! It has been far more reliable than anything else we've ever owned. My mom drove it for nine years, then my dad for the next four years after that. They gave it to me over two years ago to use a second vehicle. Still runs and drives like a champ!

I've modified my rig a little removed the cat, bumper cover (clearance issue) k&n air, 20 mpg+. It has never left me stranded even after water pump goes distributor went for the last 6 mo. The fuel pump is on its last leg. But in -20 weather it still starts after some labored cranking it pops off every time and I only got it stuck once, 4 mile hike, chain, back on the road! Completely stock it has gone everywhere I've wanted it to go (except deep mud holes) without question, hesitation or procrastination. It is a machine women can handle also, but I'm so glad my wife hates it, more for me, for all I care me and my truck will take our business elsewhere. And that's why its the best auto 'ive ever owned.

I bought this ZJ at 106,000 miles. It had a hole in the radiator, the brakes and rotors were shot, and the engine compartment was completely orange from radiator no-leak crap. It made it all the way from Detroit to Toledo strictly on US24 on an 8th of a tank. I've even driven into a tree while doing some intense offroading and its still going strong. Just keep up on the maintanence and your GC will last forever!

We bought our Jeep Grand Cherokee, V6 2WD, when it had 70K miles and drove it to 205000 miles! We barely gave it regular maintenance and the only things we replaced were the AC blower(about $900) and part of the exhaust ($500). Overall very suburb reliability! We even got about 25mpg on the highway on road trips at about 75-80mph. Would definitely buy one again if I knew gas prices would not go back up!

Had to replace the drivers door, but its been a very good rig for me. I love it and plan to keep it for a long time.

I bought my Cherokee Sport only in 2009. It has been very reliable, and is a daily driver. I enjoy the V6, and get an est 18-21 mil pr gall. This jeep has been well maintained which is a huge plus. The stereo is upgraded to a pioneer cd player (nice), and off road tire package makes it look very sporty! Besides that everything is factory. I have driven it for a few weeks now and it has done well. Hasn't used any oil, and has 129,000 miles! I use it to deliver pizzas 4 days a week, and it's great on gas for an SUV. I plan on keeping it for a long time.

We bought this Jeep from my husband's employer after he had driven it for about 6 years. He loved it and only missed 1 day of work in all those years (because of ice) because of the weather and we live 45 minutes away. I've been driving it ever since and I love it. It's so fun. The paint looks like new still (when it's clean--we live on a gravel road). I know it's going to go on the snow, and stop too. It has 283000 miles on it and did have the transmission rebuilt at 225000. I like the computer. A drunk driver hit it yesterday so I'm not sure whether we'll fix it back up--it's not worth too much to anyone else at this point, especially the insurance company.

I recently purchased a 244,000 mile 1995 Jeep GC. I have owned 7 jeeps prior to this one. It is a great running jeep even with the mileage. I purchased it as a back up vehicle but find myself driving it instead of my Nissan even with gas mileage as bad as it is. I had to replace the transfer case recently but was able to find one at a junkyard for 120 dollars. The Jeep is extremely easy to work on. I definitely recommend the GC experience.

I bought this Jeep with 70k on it. It now has 200k and I've never been happier with a vehicle. It's sturdy, reliable, and does its job. The fuel economy is average in today's world but I can still get 18 -22 mpg if I drive carefully. Its real colors show when it's driven off road - it's impressive. I have driven this car across the USA six times and its never let me down. Had the transmission replaced at 150k - but only because the mechanic that serviced it didn't add transmission fluid and ruined the original. The driver's seat is getting soft but other than that the paint job, interior, and everything else has held up well. I live in New Mexico - rough terrain. I wouldn't be without my Jeep!

The 95 is my 3rd Grand Cherokee Ltd, white, pillow leather, moonroof that has over 100K mi and still going strong. The interior is beautiful. I know my Jeeps and have purchased a new 94 and new 03. The older generation were better build with less reliabiltiy issues. The 95 Jeep only weigh 3800 lbs without me! That's 2000 lbs less than many other SUV's and 1500 lbs less than the new jeeps. The Outland package has 3" lift, Bilstein gas shocks, skidpads up front, transmission, around gas tank and with a comfortable ride! The tow package adds big radiator, high amp alternator, transmission cooler and stronger gears for higher reliability! Quadra-trac 4x4 goes anywhere!

I am actually sad as I move towards replacing my first Jeep (Grand Cherokee) after our 12 years together! I purchased this vehicle for a move to Northern Minnesota and it has proved to be a fabulous investment. It has performed wonderfully on my many trips and adventures, on-road and off, and is as beloved to my friends and child as it is to me. It saved my life when I spun off an icy highway and landed on a mound of snow unscathed. My Jeep braved a record cold winter (dipping to 60 degrees below zero) without missing a beat and has never failed to get me to my destination. In the past, I was in and out of the shop with a fussy luxury import. Now, I am a "Jeep" girl!

I think the Grand Cherokee is great. I can do maintenance on it easy. I don't do all that off roading type stuff. But I did put a hitch and a roof rack on my Jeep. I also drove it across the country many times. The spare tire is a real tire with the same rim. The only draw back from this ride is that the miles per gallon is a little low. But what do you expect from a SUV. To be able to change it for trips as far as seating and loading items is also a plus. Buy Jeep always!

Purchased used with 60K+. Mileage now is 106k. It seemed after the 100k. it was one thing after another. However most was minor. The one major problem that I had was violent shaking and bouncing and the worst part was when I took it in, the problem could not be replicated. Finally a local mechanic put an off road steering dampener on! Problem solved. Before this the dealership replaced; stock steering dampener, front shocks and a motor mount. So if your having that shimmy SHAKE SHAKE... off road steering dampener.

Had this car for 11 years, 160,000 miles. Rebuilt the transmission at 90,000 and made a few non-critical repairs (electric windows, back hatch) over the years, but, to my surprise, it's still running strong. I certainly do NOT regret buying it. It has withstood California commuter traffic, Wyoming fishing trails and Texas heat with a minimum of trouble. Mileage is bad (14-16 mpg), cornering is ridiculous, steering requires constant adjustment, but it has been reliable beyond my reasonable expectations. For an American car this old, it done good.

It is a love/hate experience. I love to look at and drive my JGC. I hate to fix it. It will roll over 200k miles next week, and has the same problems as everybody else. So do I recommend you buy an older JGC? If you drive few miles (me - 6000k per year), love to love a car, can pick one up cheap ($3000), and have AAA ... then go for it. Otherwise, buy a Toyota. With the exception of the new 4Runner, they don't drive as well, but knowing you can take a long trip without worrying about it breaking down is an enjoyable experience too. My wife's Subaru fits that bill. Also, I have a Toyota van with 325k miles as a back up. I trust it way more than the Jeep. But I LOVE to drive my JGC!

Power plus, and go in the snow.

Bought mine private party back in 2002 with 99,600 miles on it. I just hit 136k. With the exception of things I consider basic maintenance (fluid changes, new tires, new shocks), I've had next to nothing go wrong with my Jeep. It's fun to drive in bad weather, and has yet to let me down. For a 10 year old Jeep, she does what is expected, gets me where I need to go no matter what the weather. As for fuel economy, it's an SUV that is 10+ years old, I accept that.

It's mostly been good!

I've had the Jeep for 4 years and replaced the radiator and fixed the venting. The lenses on the fog lights pop off very easily. Next time you're out and about, look to see how many Jeeps are missing at least one lens. The most frustrating problem has been that the security light keeps coming on and sometimes prevents me from starting the vehicle and we can't seem to get it fixed. All in all it has been a great vehicle for us and the only one that could make it out of our neighborhood during the last big snowstorm, without even having to go into Low. I'm now trying to sell it but having a hard time because of the low MPG and high gas prices.

This thing has been a problem from day 1. Seems like every week something needs to be replaced. I had to put in a new engine at 88K and now it won't shift into overdrive and no one has any answers as to why. I've put almost 15 grand into fixing this thing, I'm ready to push it off a cliff!

Mine has 120,000 miles on it so it's probably time to dump it. I've had all the problems listed by other owners, but they seem to be in line with most cars of this age. I have found my cloth seats to be very uncomfortable. The gas mileage is very weak. The radio is weak. The pitching and yawing is weak. The drive quality goes down from there if you go faster that 80 mph (which is probably a good thing -- like a speed governor). The car is boring at all times except when you stomp on the V8 at a green light.

I bought my v8 5.2 liter engine Grand Cherokee in '03 with 116,000 miles on it and I have had it for two years now with 127k miles. The performance, comfort, and looks are just excellent. However, the fuel economy is extremely poor. Driving in the hot summer days with A/C on I get around 12 mpg. As for reliability, I haven't had any major problems so far. Just one time the A/C broke down but my friend is a mechanic and fixed it at no charge.

Purchased vehicle from relative who loved it. The Jeep has great pickup when you need to merge with traffic. It's fun to drive and the interior is luxurious. The electronic climate control keeps the cabin perfectly comfortable and the Infinity stereo system is great. I like the look of this Jeep over the newer more rounded styles. The only modification I have made is installing hand controls to drive it because I am in a wheelchair. I recommend this as a used vehicle for anyone.

This has been a fantastic vehicle for us. No major problems in the almost 8 years we owned it. Only one minor transmission leak along the way and we were told that, at 183,000 miles, it had many, many miles left. Can't rave enough about this rig.

I bought my Jeep two years ago with 174k miles on it (yep, you read that right). In those two years, i've done routine maintance, and replaced the driver side wheel bearings (about a grand at a Jeep delear). NOTHING else ever went wrong with it, but i suspect the other owner's might have repaired the brunt of it. I'm just now starting to have issues- but the Jeep is about to hit 200K! Beware, they were made to last, and made to be run into the ground, but when they get old - their repairs are NOT cheap! My problem is viscous coupler - OUCH - and sway bars. Will be sad to see her go, but can't sink money into her.

I purchased this JGC V-8 with 110,000 on it, and have had pretty good luck. Motor is strong and with a class 4 hitch, pulls my ~6000 lb boat/trailer with no problems! Uni-Body construction doesn't look too happy when I hitch on the boat, but the motor/trans doesn't complain. 4WD system has given me no problems either and is very capable, IT IS A JEEP. Only minor problems so far.

I bought the vehicle used in 1996 with 30,000 miles. Loved the way it looked and the way the seats felt. I now have 118,000 miles. Very fun to drive but has reliability problems. It never left me stranded but has been a pain in the neck none the less. Here is the list of problems I've had over the past 8 years: Transmission rebuilt twice (35k & 95k), A/C problems twice, rear wiper unit failed, left front boot, both fog lamp lens fell off, power antenna broke, radio failed, leak in radiator, power steering pump, mounting bracket for the alternator broke, passenger side mirror mount broke. Had many poor experiences at the dealer repairs centers...too many to list.

This is more of a tribute than a review. Just rolled my Jeep twice at 55-60 mph with nothing more than some glass cuts on my hands and whip lash. I am very impressed with the construction of the passenger area, all door posts were still vertical and the roof caved up away from me. I must say goodbye to a vehicle that I put over 70k miles on after the original owners put the first 100k on. It was mainly a highway driver that plowed thru the snow with ease. I would have liked to have had the V-8 but the 6 got me around just fine. I had about 20-21 mpg with a K&N air filter till my last fill up. I spent about 1k in maintenance other than fluid changes

We were very happy when we bought the car. It was 3 years old and had only 43,000 miles. It now has 90,000 miles and sitting in our driveway because we don't want to spend the money to fix the myriad of problems with it. We have had the air conditioner fixed multiple times and it isn't working again. The front end is shot, it has a cracked manifold and has a leaking head gasket. It would cost more to fix than its "blue book" value. There's just too much wrong for a car with only 90,000 miles on it.

Bought in Dec 01 with 73K. Limited all bell's and whistles. Car looks great as if rolled off dealership, cause very well taken cared off. Fun to drive and go for a ride, however the maintenance cost will also take u for a ride. I now have 117K and get nervous, cause I have already experienced some of the problems other users have posted. I had to rebuilt transmission, broken motor mounts, and now a cracked exhaust manifold. Spent over $3000!!! on this car, like throwing money in to a black hole. If you have money to burn, buy this car for fun. Definitely not a reliable car. Get a Toyota.

Despite Consumer Reports calling this AN unreliable car, this is the BEST vehicle I have ever owned, incl. Porsche, BMW,Mercedes. The only problems I had were a waterpump that blew after a dealer "powerflushed" the system (their fault), and a noisy differential AFTER the dealer replaced a $5 seal and screwed up the repair. Otherwise, this has been as reliable as a stone. W/ 127,000 miles, I've had NO other problems throughout the vehicle. Also, AVERAGES 20.4 MPG w/combined city an freeway driving!!!!! Original tires went 95,000 miles and I've never had an alignment!

Bought this Jeep last year. Has everything. Paint is great. Engine has 107000 miles now Transfer case is gear driven so it has the typical whine to it. I pull a 2500 lb boat with is and a family of 5 goes as well to the lake...This jeep has no trouble doing its job. You will however pay for the power with fuel economy. 15.9 avg over the last 17000 miles. This includes trips to Vegas from Ca during the summer daytime. Climbs well The Jeep only requires oil changes, tire rotation, and 8 or so grease fittings every 5000 miles or so. As I said no problems mechanically or electrically except for the radio!

Bought used w/83K miles on Oct '01. Now has 117K and getting more expensive by the day. I've racked up over $3000 in maintenance costs just in the last five months. Transfer case work, rebuilt transmission, broken motor mounts, wheel bearings, power steering pump, various steering component replacements, etc. AC has leaks. Very powerful low end torque, Quick! Smokes all other MPV's they can't keep up. Went to the rock quarry where I work and climbed our bulldozer trail with it! As good as my '72 Scout 2 on the climb with all the gadgets! Kids love it, Girlfriend loves it! 18 mpg city/ 24 hwy! 91000 miles, clean. I have only had two problems so far with my Jeep. The multi-function switch for the headlights, and the lens for the foglights came off. No problems with air conditioning this summer. Love the handling and the comfort of this vehicle. Don't know the history of it, but it has 110,000 miles on it and doesn't show signs of any tranny problems. It is much more easy to drive than an Explorer, but if the suspected problems show up like everyone says, I may wind up buying something else. Great family car, tows like a dream, good gas mileage for a V8, room for kids and stuff, adults are comfy in the back seat. I really like it.

This is a fun and powerful car. Had it for 6 years, and the main reason I wouldn't by a Jeep again is that it has had lots of problems over the years, and their service really sucks. everytime I take it for service, it's at least 400-500 bucks. The transmission had to be re-built after 60k miles at $2.000. Airconditioning broken several times, and $400 to fix. I would much rather get one of the newer SUV's, such as the Highlander or the new Honda Pilot. Be careful if considering a Jeep, you are getting a fun, but not reliable car, and set some money aside for repairs.

Good vehicle, a few problems.

Bought mine for a price that couldn't be refused. Paint seems to be excellent by American car standards or anyone else's. Wasn't garaged for the past six years, but it looks like new for the most part. Exhaust manifold and bumpers were cracked, but replacement wasn't costly or difficult. (Bought replacements online.) Excellent stereo speakers. (factory high-end option) A minor oil leak that I can live with. Hood release wouldn't. All minor stuff. Anybody who complains about the cost associated with the GC's typical problems (radiator, manifold, AC evaporator, transfer case) never owned a Mercedes.

Shoddy resale can benefit you!

Considering that my 95' Grand Cherokee stickered at 27 grand when new, I got a great deal at only 11 grand. The build quality is very solid, I have no rattles no shakes and handling is great. I used the 4wd quite extensively last winter and it functions without any problems. The ride can be a bit rough off the pavement but the ground clearance is great. The gas mileage has been between 18-20 mixed and the 4 liter has more than enough power for me. On the freeway, passing is not a problem but crosswinds can be a problem. Great vehicle overall.

This has been a good vehicle for me. Lots of fun. Great for towing our 17 foot boat. Comfortable on our 15 hour fishing trip drives to Canada. Great sound system. Love the all-wheel drive in wet/snowy weather. Only major problem over the years has been a lot of headaches with the air conditioning -- it is a problem every year.

This is by far the best SUV of the early to mid 90's. Anyone who has any knowledge of driving excellence would agree. Comparing it's performance with the Explorer ( it's biggest competitor ) is like comparing a Corvette with a Thunderbird ..... there is no comparison. The Grand Cherokee is a thrill to drive, from it's firm suspension ( allowing unbelievable handling for an SUV ) to it's very strong V8 ( a highly recommended option ) and to top it off, it's sporty looks, this is the SUV to buy. Before I decided on the Jeep, I test drove the Explorer only to find that it handled like a 1976 Country Squire ...... not too impressive.

I truly hate to get rid of our Jeep, but it is getting up in miles and we needed more room due to amount of traveling we do w/our 3 dogs. It has a great secure feeling on the road, is "easy" to drive and has great pick-up, which I'm really missing in my new vechicle! I've always thought it is a super-sharp truck, performs great in snow and ice/off-road. Gas mileage was quite respectable for its class.

Solid on and off road

Purchased from dealer with 49,000 miles. Command-trac works very well off-road. This thing will traverse logging camp paths that look impossible. Very little mechanical problems - cat converter and exhaust manifold. An honest vehicle - does just what it was designed to do very well. I have 87,000 miles and plan to keep it for at least 3-4 more years.
