I bought this car new in 1992 knowing almost nothing about Honda. I got it because it had 92 hp instead of the paltry 70 the CX and DX had. It also had cloth seats, aluminum wheels, and about 5 more mpg. I planned to sell it when my 1969 Mustang came out of restoration shop but fell in love with the car. I added the cargo cover, cruise control, intermittent wipers, body side moldings, floor mats, rear speakers from an SI, tinted windows, factory clock, the tall console with pad, which is essential for a comfortable driving position, and AMFM CD with Sirius. The car is easy to maintain, gets about 43 city and 50 hwy. On one trip to Iowa, I filled up the 10 gallon tank in Austin, TX and drove to El Dorado Kansas, where I put 9.6 gallons in. That averaged 57.7 mpg, driving at 65 mph. I have never gotten less than 42 mpg, and that was in summer, AC blasting, in city traffic. I just brought it in to have it rebuilt at 489k. I will never sell this car. I painted it once and the interior is still very good. I wonder how many people have a one owner VX? I just found out how many were made. 1992 219,228 Civics produced, 3889 VX 1.77% 1993 255,579 Civics produced, 2622 VX 1.02% 1994 267,023 Civics produced, 3359 VX 1.25% 1995 289,435 Civics produced, 2218 VX 0.76% Total 1,031,265 Civics produced, 12,088 VX 1.17% They are very rare, and unmolested original examples are almost impossible to find, but are worth the trouble.

Best built car ever in my opinion. Great built, reliability, design, fuel efficiency, repairability. I still have this car - 156,000 miles, body and frame are still holding up after a decade in salt country, parts are easy to find, inexpensive, easy to replace. By the way, this is the second one I have owned and real MPG is actually BETTER than the government-stats posted online - this one gets 38 MPG highway, my previous one got 44 MPG highway, both are in the 30's in the city - better than many older hybrids without all the batteries. I don't drive it any more but really cannot part with it because it is a rare gem of an auto - one designed with quality in mind rather than profit.

I purchased this car on its reputation. That was my first mistake, the second was keeping it. I have owned it for two and a half years and about 40,000 miles, but it seems like it has been in the shop more than on the road. Items fixed/replaced, head gaskets, water pump, timing belt, alternator, radiator and hoses. Plus I have to check the oil and radiator fluid every 100 miles to top them off. I put 5 quarts of oil in between each oil change, which I get every 3000 miles. It is going to be sold ,or driven off a cliff, this spring when I get a more reliable car.

I drove this car until it died. I got the car in 1998 and I got my 350 dollars out of it that I definitely owe Honda some money (Don't tell them that). The car currently has 298000 miles on it. They really don't make cars like that anymore. Sometimes it was really hard to start but always kept me safe. I drove this car from NY to PA, TN, IN, GA, SC, FL, CT, OH to name a few places. I loved my car rust and all. The thing is the engine is still alive and kicking .Thing is the car will fall apart but the engine is really built to last. Its just water is coming in now and the alternator has finally died. Bottom line if I could get a semi new 1992 Honda Civic. I would buy it yesterday.

I bought my car back in January 2009 and it has been almost 3 years. Its a 1992 Honda Civic Hatchback and it has been my life saver. I named her Lil Magic because she never lets me down. Its so funny because for it to be such a old car, almost 20 yrs old, she still keeps up with the best of them effortlessly. We are often doing 90 on the highway and joke around with my bf and I tell him that the car actually prefers to go fast. Im not kidding she is FAST!!. I dd not do any modifications yet but I plan to in the future. I sometimes wish I had power lock doors and windows but the cars loyalty to me means much more. Ppl see me on the street and always wanna buy here. I love my car.

I've been tempted to see the car, trade it in for anything because the car lasts so long. I am the original owner when it first came out it was the first rounded edge small luxury car. Sure somethings needed replacement: 2 radiators, 1 set cv boots 3 alternators, 2 ignition coils. Every thing else I could replace myself. I solved the problem of wind noise 14 years later with a rubber band stuffed in the door rubber grommets to press it against the window better and to place some noise insulation underneath the floor and inside the front doors. Get a k & n air filter and pickup from stop is good enough. On the freeway, given the light weight, at high speed it can match any car from 70+

I brought this car in June 2009 with 226K miles, I've added an additional 9K miles since then. Haven't had any problems whatso ever yet, knock on wood. The only thing with this Civic is that its FWD and kills the front two tires quickly. No complaints though, i plan on keeping this for a good while.

I gave this car all tens because it never let me down. I commute 35 miles 5 days a week to school, in Vermont, and it always took me there, no matter how bad the weather was, or how deep the snow got. Having a low clearance it's very stable while cornering. And mileage, only a hybrid would get a better mileage than this car. I will remain with Honda and drive this baby for as long as it can take me.

This car is a lot of fun to drive around Chicago. The light weight, the 5-speed manual, the 1.5 liter engine, and the tight handling make it feel sporty. Low maintenance. High MPG. The body is solid but starting to rust a bit around the rear wheel wells. After a wash and wax, I get offers from random people on the street to buy it. Just can't bring myself to replace it. Honda really did this one right.

We bought this car with 125,000, and it has been faithful to us for 7 years and 75,000 miles. We have done standard maintenance for a 17 year old car (new muffler, changed the belts, new clutch). Other than that, nothing but standard maintenance. The car has never broken down, all the electronics still work, and it still runs great.

I have had my 92 for 16 years and have no plans to get rid of it. The Little Red Car has 185K miles on it and has been extremely trustworthy. I am a Japanese car tech by trade and only use OEM Honda parts when possible. The axle shafts are the originals. I have, during it's life, installed the second set of boots after the originals. The rotors and drums have never been machined. I am now on the first set of OEM replacement shoes and second set of OEM pads. I am on the first timing belt, water pump and front engine seals, with new drive belts. I will be installing the second replacement belts, tensioner, valve adjust, plugs and misc within the next few days. Then, here I come 250K miles.

Brought the cute Civic for good gas mileage, reliability and low cost to operate and it delivers. I had a fast prelude, the Civic has little performance, but is fun to drive and light weight very good on the snow. The Civic look small, but very roomy and comfortable even for tall a person like myself. The Civic is the best bargain I can think of. Very happy to own a cute little Civic.

My dad purchased the car when it was new back in 1992 from a dealer in Southern California. It's my car now and I love it! Sure it has no pick-up and I'm making more frequent trips to the shop. All in all, it's a great car! Handling is fantastic!! I routinely get 36 MPG in the city, while using 87 octane gas!! The build quality is great! My car has never had any rust issues and it still has the engine it came with when new. It now has over 170k miles on it, but still works really well. The original clutch lasted 137k miles!! So yes, the car will never die. I routinely get offers from random people on the street to buy my car. Oh yes, and my A/C compressor is in need of replacement.

With fuel the way it is, I parked the F 150 crew cab and purchased this vehicle used, with 88,844 original miles on it. I have not owned it long, but I am already wondering what I ever did with out it. My first fuel cycle, resulted in a MPG of 40.8, mostly highway. That is a lot better than the 17.5 I was getting. Now, my wife, 2 daughters and myself are all driving Honda's, ranging from 92 Civic, 02 Accord, 04 Accord and 07 Civic. These have all been great vehicles and I can imagine owning any other make.

We had Hondas before, and glad to be owners and drivers of one again. This Honda had 150,000 miles (now about 155,1115 miles) when we bought it. It had been well-maintained, and runs great. After about six months, still no problems (other than a cracked windshield and headlight bezel). Just a few weeks after buying the car, we drove it 490 miles in one day when we relocated from Scranton, PA to Norfolk, VA. I'm now commuting 16 miles to work round trip daily, five days per week, in addition to a lot of running around when not working. We had Hondas in the past (1990 Civic DX, 1984 Civic), and very happy to be back into Hondas, where we will stay. Have several kids who also drive Hondas

MPG is low (because of my driving habits 3rd at 80 mph)..i don't like driving my second car (2003 accord).. i like most is its comfort. it feels solid.. wish if honda restart its production with 300+ HP, I am really gonna buy 1.. What can I say? We are a Honda family. We have found them to be very reliable, and this was no exception. Over the course of two years that I drove the car (inherited it from my wife) we spent an average of $62 per month, including all oil changes and servicing. Not bad when you consider what a normal car payment would be. The reliability of the engine is great, the starter on these is bad. They will often times not start on particularly hot and humid days. But give it five minutes and it will turn right over. A problem with the main relay on the starter. Also, I never liked the side mounted door handles, and the cup holders are a false sense of security - you'd be better off not using them.

On it goes!

I bought this car for $350.00 with 191,000 miles. It has hail damage, some rust, and, as the seller's ad said, is not much to look at. BUT. It runs very well, gets amazing gas mileage (42 highway), and has been totally reliable to date. Performance- wise it is nothing to write home about- -as Rolls used to say when asked how many horsepower their cars have, they would reply "Adequate." So it is with the Civic. The interior has aged fairly well, though the body less so. And everything still works! All in all, a solid little commuter car that is as close to free to drive as you can get.

The car is built very well and will last for a very long time if not driven like a race car and oil changed as scheduled. I have 177K on mine right now and can't imagine it not making it to 250-300K. It runs great and it's the most dependable car I've ever had.

Purchasing her was a nightmare, but owning her is a dream. This car has seen: 5 roundtrip treks from Chicago to L.A., plowed through 2 ft deep snow (clearing a path for a Blazer for 4 miles), ran into the side of a mountain (friend borrowed her), carried everything I owned as a bachelor, beats camaros through intersections (then loses a block later, lol), looks great, runs better, and is still ready for more. I realize no one will probably see this because of the year, but she is worth the effort to type a few words of praise. I will look back on the time i owned her, and smile. I will always compare future cars to her. My children will drive Civic HB's as their startup cars if I can convince them.

I owned my 1st VX for 10 years - see my 5/2002 review in this section. I was very sad when I sold it but I did because it started to rust badly in several areas. While looking at the bargain section of the car classifieds of the Detroit newspaper I found another 92 VX! for only $1500! What's great about this one? NO SERIOUS RUST!! Three years later????? Anyway the new one (14 years young next month) is really fantastic. It has only 128,000 miles, doesn't leak/burn/use oil, the engine runs like new and the interior is in better shape than my 1st VX - seats and carpeting are mint. Still has the same advantages and disadvantages as the old one but if I could find another 92 I'd buy it!!

I just purchase my Civic two months ago. I believe the previous owner didn't take good care of it but, despite it's abuse, it's still in great condition. I did have to replace the water pump, and the CV boots were split, but once those things were taken care of it felt like I was driving a new car. Gas mileage is still around 35 mpg, the cars acceleration is very responsive, and steering is great.

With gas prices so high only Hybrids can do better for mileage. This car has high interior noise, the seats are not that comfortable and rust is showing up in the rear quater panels but that is about the end of the bad stuff. Almost 283K miles, no major engine work and average mileage is around 40 MPG. It handles well and keeps up in city traffic no problem. I have seen several civics customized but this one won't see that kind of work until the engine goes.

When I picked this car up it hadn't been treated very well, but after doing some minor maintenance such as brakes, hoses, belts and tune-up, it was wonderful! This car took me on many a road trip and was my daily driver on the pot-holed streets of New York City. It was nice and peppy with the 5- speed and handled great. City mileage could have been a little better for a 1.5L, but then again I drove it pretty hard. Highway mileage was great. I Bought the car with 130k and sold it with 155k to get something bigger. This car was infinitely better than the Saturn I had from the same year, which developed scores of problems at just 60k!

Put 20,000 before selling it. Only experienced rust induced troubles (brakes rusted, suspension bushings...) Peppy little car Mine did a 1/4 mile in 17.2 and 0-60 in about 9.9 seconds, not bad for 4 door with 102 hp.

Only have 2 complaints. The rear window latch does not latch in cold weather. (They fixed this on later models) Because it is small and black, I have been bumped into a couple of times.

Just with very minimum maintenence (oil changes), this car has lasted me 12 years and going strong at 160K miles. I have a Mercedes, BMW, and Hyndai. But Honda Civic is the best value Period.

The only problem I have encountered is that I cannot always see my blind spot when I look over my shoulder because th seat is too tall. Other than that, this is the perfect car for a college student or young married couple because of it's good gas-mileage and smaller size.

I have owned over 30 cars in 36 years and this is the best car quality wise I have owned. It is still going strong after 146,000 miles. It has survived by daughter and two teenage sons. The only thing I don't like about it is that it does not have enough power.

We bought the civic new in 1992, Since then it has given us 134,000 miles of trouble-free service. We took the car in once for a defective distributor which was take care of by Honda. We have done all the regular maint.,and service and it has given us back dependability and saved money in our pockets at the fuel pump(35 to 44 mpg).We our so pleased with this car that in 2002 we bought our second Honda, a 2002 Civic LX.I know that our 1992 Civic will go another 130,000 miles with regular maintenance and care.

I bought this car after wrecking a late model luxury car. Though it has been a great downgrade, the Cvic is a good, reliable car. It's driver friendly, well-built and fun to drive. Performance is the one negative remark. Expect to be the last pulling off a light. On the plus side, Honda performance parts are widely available, if you are looking to increase horsepower. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. 120K and going strong.

I love it. It has great handling, acceleration for a car w/ a 102hp, lots of cargo room, cool looks, and GREAT mpg. The car looks great for a 92 w/ a simple yet sporty design. The acceleration is great especially w/ the 5-spd. The seats are great. They have lots of side bolstering for hips, ribs, and a little for shoulders. They have great lumbar support too. The handling is great. You don't have to worry about hitting anyone in parking lots. I would suggest getting one without PS, because you get a better feel of the road. Don't forget the 35/40 mpg you get with the car. If you want a cool little car but on a budget, this is the car for you.

The car has great handling and great gas efficiency, but man where's the accelerating?? This car chokes on hills, and when you need power the Civic won't give it. I've floored it once and the engine started making a loud noise but my car still didn't go fast. Overall it's a good car if you drive like a grandma (if you don't accelerate much) so it'll save you a lot of money on gas. But on the other side, it can be very frustrating driving with barely any acceleration. Of course you could always do stuff to it to make it faster, but then I would rather just buy a more expensive car with more horsepower and torque.

Purchased as my first car, my Civic may have to be retired pretty soon. Purchased at 92k miles, currently 150k , it seems pretty young, esp. for a Honda. I've had radiator flushed, and checked (along with hoses) for leaks, had the thermostat replaced three times in two months, no coolant leakage, overheats regularly. Due to nearly non-existent residual value I'm going to buy a replacement and tear it down to attempt a ressurection. It HADn't given me many problems the entire time I owned the car even with sometimes inconsistent maintenance. I would recommend the model to a potential buyer but beware overheating issues.

I am original owner. Have just turned 157,000 miles and car still strong. Have just done required maintance. Still a great car, consistently gets 30 - 32 MPG in daily city driving. Performance better than any car in it's class. The perfect communter car. The design is still fresh after 14 years, a sharp looking car. Weak areas: 1.Front brakes; discs only last about 20,000 miles. 2. CV boots weak(?); have to replace them between 30,000 - 40,000 miles. I plan to keep it for another 100,000 miles!!!

I bought my Honda LX 4 door with 55,000 miles on it.I now have over 340,000 miles on it. I maintain car as recommended. It does not consume/burn any oil. The last two sets of tires averaged 75,000 miles due to me not rotating them regularly. I have not yet had to replace the clutch or shock absorbers. I have had to replace the front brake rotors on two different occasions due to warpage and have had to replace the distributor and the alternator. This has been a phenomenally reliable and inexpensive car to own. I am wondering how many miles I can get on this engine. Has anyone heard of a Civic engine with more than 340,000 miles on it?

In 11 years of ownership, only four items have broken, two under warranty. A heat shield loosened and rattled, interior locking latches broke on both doors, the distributor cap cracked. Total repair bills: $353 (including 1 tow). All other items have been scheduled maintenance and expected replacements (e.g. battery, tires, CV boots, exhaust system) Overall average efficiency is 46 mpg in my mix of city and suburban freeway driving.

i had a civic 1992 cx , so far its the first and best car i have had. for a first car i was really killing it. didnt do an oil change in 6 or 9 months, i was driving without oil sometimes , even brought it to 190kmph WITHOUT OIL... i was young :) and freaking nuts. :( ... after all i did to it , it rarly died on me. and when it did it was an old part that did its time (clutch at 180k, radiator at 177k brakes,) thats it the only reason i sold it is cuz it was rusted like hell. and clutch died cuz i was teaching my friends to drive standard and they were killing it) VERY RELIABLE CAR ! and the body holds together more than the new cardboard civics.

Great fuel efficient and reliable car, am buying a 91 crx now. Car usually got around 36-38mpg and stick shift makes it fun to drive. Very easy to work on and easy to find parts for even for an import. Usual tune up parts was all that needed fixing. I would definitely recommed.

I was rather disappointed with the reliability of this Honda and probably spent more in repairs than would normally be expected. It started burning/leaking oil around 150K and I finally had to let it go at 174k with barely any residual value. Electrical fixes cost me quite a bit over the years too. The brakes seemed to have nice longevity as did the A/C unit and never any problems with the transmission/clutch.

This car is just great. I thought it was getting old so I bought a newer Dodge to replace it. The latter had half the mileage, twice the engine size and all the extra features you can think of... I ended up selling it and keeping my Honda instead. Even at 100k miles, it is a very reliable car and its engine starts promptly at -20F, only done minor repairs. Overall, excellent car. Great looking too.

Had this car since new in 1992. 160,000 miles later, I still can't part with it. Trade in/resale is about 500 bucks but worth so much more! Husband threatening to haul it away - says it is time. I've had to replace the cheap exhaust 2x and rust above rear wheels is a problem. People still love the hatchback folding down and I fit a large dresser in there one time - plus can fit 5 bales of straw in there at a time! Handling around corners is superb!

I bought my car with almost 140,000 miles and was thusly planning some sort of engine swap. However, the little SOHC VTEC powerplant still pulls strongly to the redline without any complaints. Transmission shifts smoothly with semi-short throws, the interior is very comfortable, and all the fun power features still work blissfully. I definitely suggest this car to anyone, high-mileage or not.

I bought this car new when I was in college. Now, 10 years later and with a good job I still love it. Everyone I work with drives new SUVs, luxury sedans, or sport cars, but I enjoy driving my Civic. It has a solid feel, responsive handling, acceptable accelleration, and I like the styling (much less cheap looking than the new Civics). Plus, I don't feel nervous parking in D.C. or driving over potholes.

Best car I've ever owned. Only replaced the typical (tires, battery, brakes, tuneup, timing belt, etc) Needed new CV boots at 140,000. Replaced driveshafts (about $330.00). Used Mobil 1 since 500 miles. Maintains 42 MPG city/highway. Rust is starting to become a concern. Wonder how much longer it will still look acceptable.

Handles like a dream and still looks new. Finish and interior wore exceptionally well. I wish they hadn't stopped putting the V- tech engine in the Civic - this was one awesome car.
