Tighten them just enough, as overtightening can cause them to snap or strip, especially with old or rusted nuts. Stripping the lug nuts will make them spin in place, making removal difficult. If this occurs, a mechanical press may be needed, but this could harm the wheel. If a bolt snaps, you'll have to remove the rotor and undo it from behind. These issues can be easily prevented with proper caution.
