In a BMW E36, you can find the coolant temperature sensor positioned on the front side of the engine, located towards the left side next to the oil filter. To access it, start by propping open the hood by pulling the release lever below the steering wheel. Once outside the vehicle, place your hand in between the hood and the top of the grille, and move the hood latch to the left to unlock and raise the hood. Look above the fan shroud and to the left of the oil filter to locate the sensor. Remove the bracket above the sensor to reach it. Disconnect the electrical connector connected to the sensor and then loosen the bolt on the bracket to take out the sensor.
