In a BMW E36, the power window relay is situated behind the plastic knee panel and metal knee bolster on the driver's side beneath the steering wheel. To access it, unplug an electrical connector from the back of the plastic panel. Once the panel and bolster are removed, locate the relay above the emergency brake. The bracket holding the relays can be unclipped and lowered for easy replacement. Grip the relay firmly and pull it out of its socket. A new relay is priced between $15 and $25 and can be replaced in under 15 minutes. If you opt to have a dealer or repair shop handle the replacement, expect labor costs of $50 to $70 per hour.
The power window relay for the BMW E36 can be found in the fuse panel on the side of the dashboard.
