Underneath the Lexus GX470, you'll find the O2 sensor mounted on the exhaust pipe. There are a total of four sensors, two upstream and two downstream. If one of these sensors goes bad, you might see signs like decreased fuel efficiency, increased emissions, black smoke or a sulfur smell from the exhaust, or even a catalytic converter failure. Catching the issue early on can prevent converter problems. Typically, an O2 sensor will last between 3 to 5 years or around 30,000 to 50,000 miles before needing replacement. These sensors can get clogged up with carbon deposits from the exhaust, as well as grease and oil build-up. To prolong their life, make sure to use the correct fuel octane level and follow the service schedule in your owner's manual, particularly for spark plugs and air filters.
The Lexus GX470 has oxygen sensors located in various places, either near the engine block's exhaust manifold or following the catalytic converter on the exhaust system.
