Many modern vehicles, like the 2005 Ford Freestyle, use a "Mass Airflow Sensor" (MAF) instead of a "Manifold Pressure Sensor" (MAP). In the Freestyle, the MAP is typically found on the air-intake tube after the air-filter housing. The MAF sensor's main task is monitoring the air entering the engine to ensure proper timing and spark. In the Ford Freestyle, it employs a hot wire element to measure the airflow. When air flows over the wire, it causes it to cool down. If the MAF malfunctions, you may experience issues such as difficulty starting, frequent stalling, jerky movements or hesitation during acceleration, and an irregular idling speed. The average cost to replace the MAF sensor is around $170-$320 for parts and labor.
In the 2005 Ford Freestyle, you'll find the map sensor situated within the intake manifold.
