In the 2009 Chevy Silverado, there are two knock sensors located on the driver's side of the engine. One is positioned slightly above and to the left of the oil filter, while the other is situated under the third cylinder from the front. These sensors act like microphones, monitoring the engine for knocking sounds that may occur due to issues like incorrect timing, poor air-fuel mixture, faulty cylinders, worn spark plugs, or low oil levels. When a knock is detected, the sensor sends an electrical signal to the Engine Control Unit (ECU), which then adjusts the ignition timing accordingly. If a knock sensor malfunctions, it could cost around $150 to $180 to have a professional replace it at a repair shop. Alternatively, you can tackle the replacement yourself for roughly $20 to $30 per sensor.
