The 2003 Acura MDX has its knock sensor located beneath the lower intake manifold. This important sensor is responsible for detecting preignition and detonation, which are harmful types of abnormal combustion. Even though loud knocking and pinging can be heard by the human ear, the knock sensor is designed to pick up on more subtle levels of these issues. When a knock sensor is faulty, the engine may not feel right when driving at various speeds or when carrying different loads. It can also lead to improper acceleration on the highway and reduce fuel efficiency. To clean the sensor plug, you can use either alcohol or a specialized sensor cleaner, but this task should be done with care and attention to detail.
