The 2003 Ford Focus does not come equipped with a dedicated temperature sensor; instead, it utilizes the cylinder head temperature as an engine coolant temperature (ECT) reading. This type of ECT is situated behind the alternator, requiring its removal for a better view of the cylinder head temp sensor. A malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor can provide incorrect data to the computer, leading to inaccuracies in fuel and timing adjustments. Although rare, if this sensor fails, it can result in decreased fuel efficiency and potential engine performance issues. One noticeable sign of a faulty coolant sensor is the emission of black smoke from the engine due to an excessive fuel-to-air ratio adjustment by the computer.
In the 2003 Ford Focus 2.3, the coolant temperature sensor can be found in the coolant hose that connects to the radiator.
