In a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, the engine control module (ECM), known as the onboard computer, is situated next to the steering box and the battery on the driver's side of the engine compartment. If the ECM malfunctions, you may notice the check engine light (CEL) illuminating, engine stalling or misfiring, and other performance issues. To reset the ECM and potentially correct firmware errors, disconnect the negative battery cable and turn on the headlight switch to drain any leftover power from the ECM. Wait at least ten minutes before reconnecting the battery cable, which should reset the ECM.
