The check engine light is a broad indicator that lets you know there are one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in your car that should be checked using an OBD-II scan tool. There are numerous reasons why the check engine light may come on, including issues with the 2018 Chevrolet Volt. Even though the Volt primarily runs on electricity, a loose gas cap is a common culprit for the light coming on. Another frequent issue is low engine coolant, possibly related to a depleted battery. The variety of potential causes and solutions is so vast that it's impossible to accurately guess without checking the DTCs. While some problems are more common than others, that doesn't necessarily mean they are the issue you are experiencing.
The primary reason for the check engine light turning on is often related to recent maintenance or the gas cap being improperly sealed.
