The 2003 Volkswagen Beetle requires a group size 48 battery that measures 12 1/16 inches in length, 6 7/8 inches in width, and 7 9/16 inches in height. This battery features top-mounted battery posts for the car's terminals to connect to. Typically, this battery will last between three to five years before it needs to be replaced. You'll know it's time to replace the battery when you encounter difficulties starting the engine. The battery is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side, near the fender. To replace it, first remove the battery cover lid, then unclip the distribution box from the top of the secondary battery cover and set it aside. Next, remove the secondary cover and use a 10-millimeter socket to disconnect the battery terminals.
