There have been no reported issues with the timing chain on the 2013 Chevrolet Captiva, and there are no current or past recalls for it. Typically, timing chains should last for the life of the car with minimal maintenance needed, unlike belts. However, they can still fail occasionally in any vehicle. Warning signs that the timing chain might be failing include hearing engine rattling when idling, experiencing misfires, finding metal shavings in the oil, or seeing the check engine light come on with a relevant code.
If the timing chain malfunctions, the engine will stop running right away. This happens because the engine loses its ability to operate in sync. Without valve reliefs in the pistons, the engine may suffer internal damage. If the issue escalates, the check engine light will illuminate on the dashboard, and diagnostic trouble codes will be saved for errors like misfires and issues with the crankshaft and camshaft positions. Sometimes there may be unusual sounds when starting the engine. In the worst-case scenario, there could be audible metallic clattering noises indicating severe mechanical damage.
I've had to replace the timing chains twice in the past three years, and it looks like it might need another replacement soon. I wouldn't suggest this engine to anyone, not even my worst enemy.
