Many drivers appreciate the GMC Terrain's Eco mode for its consistent performance without harming the transmission, but some have reported a loud "banging sound" that mimics shifting into multiple gears at once. Unfortunately, GMC Terrain vehicles have faced issues like excessive oil consumption and transmission failures, leading to class action lawsuits and engine replacements. The 2010-2013 models were most impacted, with a legal dispute attributing faulty piston rings to the problem. In particular, the 2010-2011 Terrains tend to burn through a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, eventually causing engine failure, while 2011 vehicles experience early transmission failures as well. Engaging Eco mode can worsen these problems, with repairs averaging over $4,000.
Typically, issues with the eco mode feature on the GMC Terrain stem from computer-related problems.
