The 2014 Ram 1500 features electric power steering, eliminating concerns about power steering fluid leaks, pump failure, or air in the system. However, it does introduce a new set of potential problems, which could arise abruptly and with severe consequences, especially at higher speeds. Despite these risks, these issues appear to occur less frequently, making it a reasonable trade-off for many people. Typically, if a problem arises, it is likely related to the EPS module, potentially resulting in intermittent or sudden complete power steering loss, which can be hazardous when driving on the highway. While some drivers experience these failures at high mileage, quite a few have reported them even at 50,000 miles or fewer.
In 2014, a few issues with the power steering in Dodge Ram 1500 trucks included the steering wheel getting stuck during driving and problems with the power steering rack failing.
My vehicle broke down at 41,323 miles on June 21, 2022. Thankfully, it happened when the car wasn't in use. The repair cost was $3,295.00, and it took two weeks to get the necessary part. What a headache!
I purchased my truck brand new with 50 miles on it. In 2014, as of today, 7/8/2023, it has only accumulated 26,226 miles. The power steering failed suddenly when I started it and put it in reverse that day. Fayetteville Dodge in North Carolina is asking for $4900 before taxes for the replacement part, which will also take 7 to 10+ days to arrive. I urge everyone to contact the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 to report this issue and demand a recall. Why should we have to pay if it's a problem that Dodge should have addressed from the beginning?
My power steering became harder to turn. Usually, after making a sharp turn, my truck would naturally straighten out if I released the wheel. I used Deep Creep spray on the universal joint located just above the steering box, and this fixed the issue. Now, I plan to go ahead and replace the universal joint.
If someone is wise, they will install grease fittings in all U-joints and keep them properly lubricated to ensure longevity and prevent potential failures. Factory-sealed components are unreliable, so it's better to take precautionary measures by conducting regular maintenance to extend their lifespan and enhance reliability.
I'm experiencing a similar problem where my truck only has issues in cold weather. Once the truck warms up, I can fix the problem by turning it off and on again. Sometimes, I need to restart it several times before I get power steering back. I suspect it might be a problem with the relay!
My 2014 Ram truck hit 50,000 miles just now. Yesterday, everything was running smoothly as I drove home at 80 mph on the highway. However, this morning I tried starting the truck and saw a flashing steering wheel symbol with an exclamation point - and suddenly, no power steering at all! Did the module malfunction while the truck was not in use? This issue should be addressed promptly with a recall!
Lacking flexibility when driving slowly and making turns.
