The problem of the key getting stuck in the ignition was initially thought to be solved by replacing the shifter for $700. However, the issue recurred because the mechanism around the steering wheel did not prompt the key to release. Ultimately, the problem was resolved for a much lower cost of $75.
I also had trouble with the key sticking in the ignition. A friend who is a mechanic suggested firmly pressing down on the brake while removing the key. It took a few tries as the key kept getting stuck, but after some persistence, the issue was resolved and the key no longer stuck.
