The Mazda6 now uses an electric power steering system instead of the older hydraulic system. Unfortunately, the new system has electronic components that are more prone to failure compared to the tried-and-tested hydraulic systems. One problematic component is the torque sensor located in the steering rack. A faulty torque sensor can lead to a dangerous situation where steering feels weak in one direction but overly strong in the other. The torque sensor helps the electronic power steering motor determine the necessary force for steering. As a result, the system may incorrectly interpret your steering inputs, making it seem like you are steering lightly in one direction and forcefully in the opposite direction. This fault is particularly hazardous, especially when driving at high speeds.

While driving on a busy California freeway at high speed, my Mazda6's steering suddenly became unresponsive just as I was about to enter a large traffic circle. I was absolutely terrified, as I had never experienced anything like it before.

The situation is very concerning. A new Mazda sedan experienced a complete system failure, making it impossible to control or steer the car. As a result, the car veered off the road, crashed into a fence, narrowly avoided a sign and parked truck, crossed a highway, hit a guide wire, and collided with a shed. Surprisingly, the damage was minor, and no one was injured. The car's electric steering system was the cause of the failure. I have decided to avoid owning a Mazda in the future due to this incident.

The steering issues in the 2020 Mazda 6 can lead to wobbly steering, vibrations in the steering wheel, and a clunking sound.
