The 2011 Mazda2 is outfitted with a timing chain for its 1.5 L 4-cylinder engine, as opposed to a timing belt. In previous years, the Mazda2 used a combination of both belt and chain, depending on the model year and engine size. By 2014, they had transitioned completely to using the timing chain. One major reason for this switch is likely due to the chain being easier to maintain compared to the belt. Unlike the timing belt which requires periodic replacement, the timing chain is designed to last the entire lifespan of the vehicle. This durability is attributed to the chain being located inside the engine, shielded from external elements unlike the belt. While there are instances where the chain may fail, it is generally expected to withstand the lifespan of the car.
The Mazda 2 from 2011 comes with a timing chain installed.
