The Ford Explorer used to have a construction based on a truck frame until the 2016 models. However, since then, they have transitioned to a unibody platform. With longitudinally-mounted engines and standard rear-wheel drive, they are now more akin to typical luxury SUVs.

The Ford Explorer had a full frame construction until 2010. In 2011, it introduced a unibody front-wheel drive chassis for the first time. This continued until 2020 when a new unibody rear-wheel drive based chassis was introduced.
