To retrieve diagnostic trouble codes without an OBD scanner on the Ford Taurus, follow these steps: Begin by pressing and holding the reset button on the odometer. Continue to hold it down while turning the key to the accessory position. Watch the dash closely as the word "TEST" appears in green. Release the button, then press it again to cycle through the available options. Keep going until you find the DTC option, which will show you the trouble code on the screen. Note that the code itself won't explain the issue, so you'll need to look up its meaning elsewhere.
The ignition key can be used to access OBD2 codes.
