In order to top up the transmission of a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500, you will need around 4 quarts of ATF 4, also known as Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid. You can easily find this fluid in one-quart bottles at many large retailers or from automotive parts stores or online sellers you trust. The price per bottle can range from $2 to $24, and you should ideally get at least three bottles. If you opt to have a professional mechanic handle the fluid change, expect to pay an extra $50 to $150 for labor.
The amount of transmission fluid needed for a 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 is between 12 and 16 quarts.
I added 10 quarts of fluid to my 2012 Ram 1500 ST 4.7 after changing the filter. I allowed the transmission to drain overnight. Because some fluid spilled when I removed the pan, I couldn't accurately measure the amount that was drained.
