No matter what type of engine the 2004 Chevrolet Impala has, it will be equipped with either a 4-speed 4T65-E or 4-speed 4T65-E-HD transmission, both with the same fluid capacity. Initially, you'll need to fill it with 7.4 quarts, with a total capacity of 13.4 quarts. When changing the fluid, you'll notice you're replacing a little over half of the total amount. It's crucial to change the transmission fluid every 30,000 to 40,000 miles, checking levels in between. Low fluid levels or degraded fluid are the main reasons for an overheated transmission, which could result in a total transmission failure. Since replacing a transmission is one of the most costly repairs, it often exceeds the value of a vehicle that's almost 20 years old.
