For the 2009 Toyota Matrix with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, the oil capacity is 4 quarts. The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine has a capacity of 4.4 quarts. The recommended oil viscosity is SAE 0W-20, but SAE 5W-20 can also be used. The capacity specified includes the spin-on canister type oil filter with a thread size of 3/4-16 inch. As per the owner's manual, it is advised to change the oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. It is recommended to use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil or an equivalent. If you are changing the oil yourself, you can access the filter housing under the vehicle. The oil drain plug should be torqued to 29 ft-lbs.
