In your 2006 Ford Escape, the transmission has a filter that cleans contaminants from the lubricant, similar to how the engine uses an oil filter. However, this filter only needs to be changed every 30,000 miles when you also change the ATF. The process of changing the transmission filter is a bit more complex than changing the oil. First, you will need to drain the transmission by removing most of the pan bolts and loosening the remaining two to let the fluid drain. After that, remove the pan to access the filter and screen. Replace both components before reassembling, and be sure to clean the pan and replace the gasket. Once the pan is back on, refill the transmission.
The transmission filter for this car does not go inside the pan. The Carquest transmission filter kit 201140 is the correct kit with a gasket that fits the transmission. The transmission needs to be disassembled to install the filter.
First, loosen most of the bolts on the transmission pan, leaving only two. This will allow the oil to drain out. Next, take off the remaining two bolts and remove the pan. Replace the filter and screen, and clean the pan and gasket. Once everything is clean, put everything back together. Open the service fill plug and refill the transmission. Start the engine and shift through all gears before putting the car in park. Check the oil level using the service fill port, then put the plug back in place.
