To unlock the fuel door on a Subaru Forester, first locate the fuel door release lever on the driver's side floor. Pull up on the lever while the vehicle is unlocked to open the fuel door located at the rear of the car. After opening the door, remove the gas cap, fill up with gas, and then twist the cap back on until you hear it click a few times to secure it. Close the cap door and drive away once you're finished.

In the 2021 Forrester, you simply press on the door near the gas cap to open it, without needing a release lever.

The 2020 Forester does not have a pull lever on the driver's side; instead, you simply push the gas cover.

The conflicting information arises from a modification in design. In earlier models of the Forester, there was a driver-side floor lever, but in the fifth-generation and subsequent models (SK; 2018), this lever has been removed. In newer Foresters, you can open the fuel door by pushing it when the car is unlocked, and it will remain locked if the car is locked. If you have trouble opening the fuel door on your Forester made in 2018 or later, make sure to unlock the car before trying to press open the fuel door.
