Does the Chevy Equinox use a timing belt or timing chain?

It could vary based on the year your car was made and the type of engine it has, but I think that all Equinox models from 2010 to 2017 with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine come equipped with a timing chain. This should be a positive for you since you won't need to concern yourself with a rubber belt deteriorating and needing replacement at specific intervals. The chain is a sturdier metal component, designed to be long-lasting as long as you maintain regular oil changes to ensure proper lubrication.

My 2015 Equinox LTZ with the 6-cylinder engine has three chains: one main chain and two additional chains. These chains will naturally wear and elongate over time, causing the tensioners and guides to also wear out. General Motors states that these chains are designed to last the lifetime of the car, but I recommend replacing them, along with the guides, tensioners, and oil pump, between 75,000 and 80,000 miles. The primary timing chain drives the oil pump, which features a built-in chain guide that also deteriorates. Expect the cost to be approximately $1500 for this maintenance work.

If it's over $1500, the cost will likely be between $2000 and $2200, but fortunately, it didn't damage the rest of the engine!

I own a 2015 EquinoxLT, and the mechanic just phoned me to say that my timing belt has snapped. He clarified that it is a belt and not a chain. It looks like my engine might not be the original or that some 2015 models have rubber belts. It's been quite bothersome because it was supposed to have a chain. When I called back to confirm, they indeed verified that it has a rubber belt. I guess that's somewhat good news. Ugh!
